Layer Palette Behavior When Opening AI Docs
Whenever I open a multi-layered AI file, all of the layers and sublayers are automatically unzipped (i.e., the disclosure triangles are all downturned by default to expose every layer -- ugh).
Upon opening an AI document, I would like for the layer disclosure state to match the layer disclosure state of the document at the time the document was last saved and closed.
Is there a way to change the default behavior of Illustrator here?

Nope, It's been this way for multiple versions now. It somehow relates to having Groups of Groups. I have a couple of maps that do this and I have to change it every time I open them.

Why does CS6 quit when opening CS4 docs in InDesign?
We just downloaded InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and Photoshop in Creative Cloud. But when opening InDesign docs made in CS4 the CS6 version immediately crashes. But when reopening the document is there, but nonamed and not with all links remained. Common problem?
Do you have a crash report? If so, please post it on pastebin.com and put a link here.
Do you have a font manager? If so, which one and what version? I think I remember similar reports tied to auto-activation plugins, but I'm not certain, and the crash report, if you have one, will be a lot more useful than speculation to start. -
Strange problem when opening word doc situated in WLS virtual dir
Hi all,
we have a strange problem when opening word doc
situated in C:\Oracle\Middleware\as_1\forms\webutil
we put some word docs there and tried to open from forms using for example web.show_document('http://wp0606:9001/forms/webutil/mug00103.doc', '_blank');
no problem using FF, however in IE8 the word doc is shown in its binary format, this also happens when we try to open the doc in IE8
however when we google and search for instance for a test.doc and then click on this url a file save dialog is shown
that's why we believe that this might be due to a configuration issue of WLS
any help would be greatly appreciated

MartinI think you have 2 ways to go here. Figure out what html is from wherever weblogic gets it, meaning you have to delve into the docs, snoop
around in directories and find what it must be sending (This is going to be unavoidable if you are going to change what weblogic is doing.
Sooner or later you have to try to figure out where it gets this stuff from)
or
you can experimentally snoop on your url with a tool like wget or curl. These are fundamental web tools.
The latter is always a useful thing to be able to do. (you need to formulate a query to get the content-type).
Whoever managed to get weblogic to serve any files in the first place probably can figure this out. -
Error Message when opening attached doc with Mac for Word 2008
When I try to open attached docs of any any sorts (mainly word/pdf) I get an error message that wont allow me to open the attachments, please help!!

When opening a word doc in pages 08 I get a pop-up saying "couldn't contact spell checker" The only option is to click "ok", but when I do the message immediately reappears! The only way out of the loop is to force quit. Has anyone else had this problem? For what it's worth, pages (when creating a new file) and my other programs seem to perform spell check functions just fine.
I found if I keep hitting clicking the "OK" button on the error message, eventually the file opens and the message goes away, temporarily (granted this has been for relatively short documents). As you start manuvering through the document, the message periodically appears. I can't tell why or when it appears; it seems random.
I've tried running Onyx and fixing program links but to no avail.
I also noticed that the document doesn't open up as an untitled document (re: Pages 2.0) but opens up with the original filename with a ".pages" extension. -
Modal dialog or alert is active when opening a doc.
lately whenever I open an indesign CS4 existing document a tiny alert window pops up that is too small to read what it says. when trying to reopen the doc the message appears "Cannot handle the request because a modal dialog or alert is active"
I am not doing anything besides opening a document. and the only way to get rid of the tiny alert window and open the doc is to hit return. any idea whats happening and how to stop this?There are no startup scripts, just the out of the box program.

Warning when opening a .doc file (with Pages) ruins my applescript convert process
I have 2000 plus documents (some Pages, most .doc) that I need to convert to PDF. I've got a working applescript droplet that converts both doc and pages files very nicely... but on some of the .doc files I get this dialog: "Some warnings occured. Would you like to review them now." This of course, ruins my script run.
Is there a way to suppress this warning when Pages opens a .doc file?Only if there is a script for dialog boxes in your AppleScript which you would have to tailor for the responses.
You can record snippets of mouse activity using the Script Editor and include those in your script if there are no AppleScript library items.

Strange behavior when opening ESS iview in new window
Hi all,
I have a problem that i find very strange. In ESS, when opening a iView in a new window, for some users the link to the ITS service gets corrupt..
An example:

If you look at this link you can see that the & sign between iview_mode and NavPathUpdate is missing and makes the launch of the iview will fail.
If I use the same link for opening the page in a new window this error does not appear.
I have tried to change the parameters that are passed on but this does not help..

When opening Adobe documents in my browser everything is fine for about 4 documents, then when I try to open again, the screen goes black and I get a popup stating an internal error has occurred. I try to refresh, but that does not clear the problem. I have to close Firefox and then reopen. Very frustrating!!

Several customers running different versions of Office 2011 (14.4.1-14.4.5) on OSX varying from 10.7.5 to 10.9.5, running on various kinds of hardware (iMac/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air) of various ages are having issues opening *.doc files if the Word is already open. The error message that gets displayed is, "XXXX.doc uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version"
When the customer tries to open the same file via File-Open, she gets "The file is locked for editing. you can open the file as read-only".
When trying to do so, she gets "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters".
If Word gets Force-quit, the same document opens without any problems.
1. Repairing Disk permissions was ran several times. and the volume was found to be OK.
2. I have noticed that in this scenario either deleting the normal.dotm or com.microsoft.word.plist (~/Library/Preferences) sometimes resolves the issue, sometimes it doesn’t. There is no pattern to follow. All versions of Office are affected, the fully updated and the non-updated ones.
3. I have tried completely removing the suite using Office 2011 Uninstall.app and/or Remove Office 2011 Uninstaller.pkg, then going through customer's library and manually removing all the Office references.
4. None of these systems had Office 2008 in the past.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.Reboot both the Mac and the server. Word opens .DOC files and Excel opens .XLS files. As you have found out by copying the files to the computer. It is the connection between the 2 computer that is causing the error.

"Cannot recover" Error when opening InDesign doc
We are a Server 2008 w/ XP/SP3 client environment. I have a user that opens an InDesign doc located on a shared network drive, does some work on it, and closes it. When the next person opens it, they get this error: "Cannot recover <<filename>>.indd. Please try to open it using the File menu. The file <<filename>>.indd has been changed since Adobe InDesign last quit (Error code: 11). They can click "OK" to this. The next window that pops up has an error: This document contains links to missing or modified files. Click Fix Links Automatically to have InDesign update this document with the modified files and help you locate missing files..." there's more about using the links panel, etc. They click "don't fix" and the document opens. To the best of my knowledge it is happening on just one file.
I'm pretty sure the second error is because we recently took a server off-line that some of the links had been pointing to; I've informed my users they need to update the links in the files. It's the first error I'm wondering about. The first user I mention at the beginning has been having *tons* of trouble with InDesign the last week or so. It locks up, freezes panes, and needs to be ended through task manager. It's been unbearable for both her and myself trying to figure out what's wrong. My hurdle is that I don't use the software at all but I'm in IT support so so I'm in charge of troubleshooting but not sure where to begin.
Can someone please help with the error we are receiving and also, provide some suggestions on how I can troubleshoot the performance issues?

XP2002/SP3
3GB RAM
P4 2.8GHz proc.
Not sure on the graphics card but can retrieve it will be helpful. User does use dual monitors.
TIA!Reinstalling won't necessarily fix the kinds of problems you are having since they may have nothing to do with the application itself. I woud uninstall first, whenever possible, and immediately run any updates. Changing the preferences would be more productive as a first step though. Prefs are not automatically replaced on a new installation, either -- it depends on what option you chose during the uninstall.
For your questions:
1) When a file is opened, ID write a file with the extension .idlk in the same directory. This file tells any instance of ID that the file is already open and in use and prevents multiple users form having simultaneous access. It may or may not be deleted (usually not) during a crash scenario.
2) Generally speaking it is not possible for mere mortals to recover a corrupt ID file. Tommy Donovan at Adobe is collecting them for study, but makes no promise of recovery. The folks at Markzware say they have some luck using their ID2Q plugin for Quark Xpress to open and save as a Quark file, then going back the other way using Q2ID to convert back. They might do a on-off for a small fee.
3) Go to the link in the previous response, and scroll down to the part about repalcing preferences. Editing the prefs in the edit menu is not the same as replcing them with a new set. The files that need to be replaced are InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData.
4) If there is something wrong on User 1's system that is corrupting the file, it would show up when User 2 opens it. Export the file to Interchange format (.inx), then open that file and save as a new .indd file. That can often clean up minor problems (i.e. those not serious enough to keep the file from opening at all). -

I have a problem with my PSD files: I create a documents with multiple layers. When saving the files look OK, then when I close and re-open them, some part of each layer simply aren't here anymore. Squares of approximately 350px by 350px are erased from each layer! I have no idea where that can come from. I'm lost there.
I work with Adobe CS5 on an iMac 27 2.66Ghz i5 with 8Gb, OSX 10.6.4

Formatting is off when opening Word docs in Pages and vice versa
I recently decided to switch from Windows to Mac and bought a MacBook. I used to use Word on my Windows computer and now when I open .doc or .docx files in Pages, the formatting is off, i.e. bullets, tabs, spacing, etc. This formatting problem also happens when other people use Word to open my files that I created in Pages and saved as a .doc. Is there some fix for this so that I don't have to reformat each document that was created in Word but that I now open in Pages?
For maximum compatibility I think you need to use Word for Mac or OpenOffice.

How to bring back status bar when opening Excel doc mail attachment?
I have an iPad updated to 6.1.3. When I open up an Excel document from mail it opens the attachment fine and the status bar across the top with the 'Done' option to close the doc appears then disappears altogether after a few seconds giving you full screen access to the file. No problem there, but bringing it back to be able to close the document is tricky. Tapping along the top works only sometimes....I haven't been able to find a consistent way to bring it back to close the document. I can slide down across the top to bring up the notification center but tapping across the top to bring the bar back to close the file will only work after playing around with it for about 20 touches or so. Is there a trick to this or a way to keep the status bar there? Thanks in advance!!
Then quit the mail app completely and reboot your iPad, then try again. What we are describing is the way that it is done. Your mail app might be just acting a little hinky now.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
