Layer style affected on all layers

Hello Everybody,
I have 5 layers with similar and different layer styles applied in my psd file (PS CS5).  The problem is when I make changes to the styles on one layer, the affect is applied to all the layers simultaneuosly. Why is this happening? Is there any option to turn this off? I need to apply style changes to only a particular layer without affecting other layers. Please HELP.
Thanks
Shiva

Is it the angle of the light that's changing on all the layers?  If so, then it's likely you've got the [ ] Use Global Light setting checked.  That setting is supposed to tie the light angle together on all the layers so that changes will be coordinated.
If this is not the issue, you may want to do some screen grabs and post them here to show what you're seeing, your layers panel, and the specific layer effects you're seeing the changes in.  That will give the folks here more information with which to answer your question accurately.

  • One layer style changing all the other layer styles? Turn this off?

I'm sure there is an easy answer to this but I cannot seem to find it. When I am applying a style to one layer in CS2, and lets say I give it a drop shadow that is different (say it's at 110degrees rather than 90degrees) compared with the other drop shadows in my other layers, the curent layer style will change all the other layer styles across the board. I've looked all over for some setting to change so each individual layer keeps its own style but I can't seem to find this. I want each layer to have its own style attribute and not change the rest, how do I correct this?
    Thanks for your help!

You need to uncheck the global light option in the layer styles dialog.

  • BUG: Saving Text with Layer Styles to PDF

I was just able to take the CS6 beta for another test run, and it seems the following ancient, but high-priority bug (at least for me) hasn't been addressed:
When saving large Photoshop documents (composites in resolutions like, say 7000x10000 pixels) to Photoshop PDF, certain layer styles are often not exported correctly when applied to text layers. The layer styles that are affected are those that render pixels that are then clipped inside the text, such as Gradient Overlay, Bevel & Emboss etc.
When output, they usually don't span the entire text in the PDF, but are cut off with a straight line at some point (I can't supply an example image right now, my apologies). Inside of Photoshop, they render correctly at all zoom levels. My guess is that this is somehow related to the raster data being written as individual tiles and for some reason, some of these are then omitted for layer styles.
The problem isn't new to the CS6 Beta, but has existed for many versions. I have run into it in both Mac and Windows versions. The current workaround is to always expand layer styles on the text layers that are affected into layers before exporting, which is tedious and error-prone since there is inevitably something that gets missed (EDIT: I was wrong there, that workaraound doesn't work, the problem persists even if the layer style is expanded into a layer that is then applied as a clipping group).

Two possibilities: Pre-compose everything and fade the comp or use a second layer that has the layer styles, but in its Blending Options for the layer styles has set Fill opacity to zero, so only the styles are rendered, but not the source. Whjat you are seeing is normal behavior based on how styles are supposed to work. Whenever there is a non-zero (non-transparent) pixel, the get applied, where the pixels opacity acts as amultiplier for the style's intensity. Looks good for some, but often causes this popping appearance...

  • Extreme lag on mixer and smudge tools with "all layers" checked

Running Photoshop CC 64, Win7 x64 on an i7-3820 based machine with 32GB of ram, 256GB SSD, several 2TB drives and a GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB 16X video card.
Running the latest non-beta WHQL drivers for the video card,
    i have photoshop set to:
    use graphics acceleration,
    drawing mode advanced,
    opencl.
When I'm using the mixer brush and with the brush set to sample all layers, depending on brush size, I experience a large lag in rendering. When doing this, my CPU usage is around 10% and disk usage is also low so I'm assuming the graphics card is the bottleneck here.
Images are from a 21MP canon 5dMK II, 8 bit files. I can replicate the problem with a single background layer and mixing/smudging on a 2nd transparent layer set to use all layers.
    Any thoughts?

I think is has more to do with the process then compute power.  Its not something that lens itself to parallel processing that can use multiple processors and GPUs.  Brush size does increase the amount of data the need to be sampled and mixed in a repetitive sequential process. You will find the same thing happens with other tools that don't use your Video GPU like the smudge tool.  Its lag may even be greater then large mixer brush tool. Each recursion take some time. You make quick strokes with large tips brushes with these types of tools your going to have lag.   It not a simple process of laying down a single color over a path. In the real world its a physical process that happens in real time.  It take time to simulate that physical process digitally. Burn, Dodge, Blur and Sharpen brush tools I would think will also lag.

  • Downloaded Layer Styles

Hey, so I just installed PSE 8 and I have downloaded some fantastic layer styles. Well, I made metadata files for them and tried to put 4 of them into the correct folder and everything. I deleted the thumbnail and everything, but after all that, only one of the four layer styles show up on the layer styles MENU. All of them show up in the show all file, but only the one on the menu. Normally that would be fine, but I have more I want to add and I'd really REALLY like them to be organized so I don't have to look through a million different layer styles every time. Plus, I'd like to learn how to make my own....
    Anybody know how to help?

You might also reset the photoshop cs6 preferences and see if that clears things up.
(preferences are not reset when reinstalling the software)
Restore all preferences to default settings
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings.
New Preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.

  • Layer Style/Blending options applying to all layers ie.. drop shadow angles

I am having a problem in CS6 Photoshop where I never experienced this in CS3-5.
I am designing a website and when I apply a drop shadow or inner shadow to a layer through layer style/blending options in the layers tab. It applys the same angle etc.. to all the other layers I have done styles too...
I will have 5 + layers done with styles and I will make a new layer and give it a shape, open up blending options and when I do a drop shadow and change the angle I literally can see everything on my layout change angles also when I move it around for just ONE layers style... What on earth is going on? This makes it impossible to make unique designs unless I keep flattening my PSD and transfering stuff over which destroys workflow.

Thank you for the reply's. I actually was able to figure it out shortly after making this thread.
@Noel Carboni: I needed to change the direction of the light for an inner shadow on a set of arrows for a slider. If they were the same angle it would look horrific.

  • 3d light to affect all layers

    Hi,
I've just recently started to use the 3d function on photoshop cs5 with text. But is there a way so the light on one layer affects other layers instead of having to redo the light for all layers?
    Thanks

Nope. Unfortunately that 3D stuff is pretty much locked in its own world per layer. You do get the coordinates in the toolbar with the transform tools, though, so you could write them down or save them as a preset and apply them on the other layers...

  • Layers problem in PS cs5 extended, all layers change at once, including background layer.

layers problem in PS cs5 extended, when working in a layer, all layers changes at once i.e size, cropping, smart object etc. even the background layer changes...it is really annoying, please help, My system windows 7 64 bit  4gb ram.  It is not grouped, deleted preferences, usually work in rgb/ 8 bit channel - have same problem with all new projects.

    Hi
Problem with layers is when I use the crop tool in a layer out of 20, all of them get croped at once including a locked backgound layer.
When I use smart object in a layer to size down image with transform tool, guess what happens to all the layers in project? all behave odd, changes same as the layer being sized down. If I work images or layers in separate files, once I bring them over to my workspace, all get affected without maintaining their own individuality. This happens with every new project. I think colors are not affecting layers. Layers are not grouped, I do not know anything about linking layers. This problem is stopping me from using photoshop. Please help!!!
I had previously a problem with a photoshop bug (GPU sniffer), which I was able to resolve it with reintalling the graphics video card with the help of HP technical support, I am able now to work with repousse however with same video card.
Let me know if you need me to give you more details.
    thanks,

  • Issues with merging layers with layer styles

Just downloaded CS6 Photoshop off the creative cloud and the merge layer command does not work. What is happening is there is one layer with a layer style then a shape layer and when I hit Cmd E it merges the layers but the layer style will not merge with it. I was chatting it up and everything they recommended did not work. It works on all my other co-workers computers and we are all on the cloud. I tried renaming pref. folder, settings folder, re-installing, holding down shft+option+cmd on start up. I also created a test account but that turned out to be a major inconvenience. Once logged into the account there is nothing there. The suggestions just started getting more ridiculous as chat proceeded. Nothing.
    Has anyone experienced this issue?
Does anyone have a solution where I don't have to create a whole new admin account just to see if CS6 Photoshop works correctly?
    P.S.
Adobe customer portal is about worthless.

There are two merge layers type commands  one is merge down involves only two layers and another that is merge visible layers.  In my opinion there is a problem with the way merge down is implemented. When you use merge down if the bottom layer in the merge down has a layer style the merged layer also has this layer style attached.  This means that pixels from the layer merged into it will be effected by this layer style.  The result may well not look like the composite looked before the merge. The will also happen in CS5. Merge visibile layer works the correct way in my view as the merge progresses the top two layers are merge by applying any layer masks and layer styles first and merging the two layers the resulting layer has no layer masks and no layer style. This result is then merged with the next lower layer with its masks and style applied first. The result is a single layer without mask and style that looks like the original composite view.  If your having the problem with CMD|CTRL+E and the result has a layer style try turning  the layer style visibility off see if that helps.  If it helps some  backup to before the merge down  use merge visible or first rasterzise the bottom layer to be merged.

  • Filter Effect and Layer Style in the same layer vs separate layers

I'm adjusting a photographic image and am using both a filter effect and a layer style in the same layer on a Smart Object.  I want to separate the two effects into two layers, so one layer has the filter effect (Nik) and one layer has the layer style (Color Overlay) (with the goal of merging/rasterizing the Nik filter effect with the Smart Object but keeping the layer style unmerged).  I can make two layers and move one effect without problem, but the visual result of each effect on a separate layer is quite different from having both effects in the same layer.   The Blend Mode for all my layers is Normal.  Within the Color Overlay panel, the blend mode is Linear Burn.
I don't understand why the visual result is different.  I'm not an advanced user of Photoshop, so maybe I'm missing something.  This is a trial of CS6 that I'm using.
Layer 1: a layer style and a filter effect, stacked
    looks very different from....
    Layer 2:  a layer style
    Layer 1:  a filter effect

If you want two separate layers, then on the duplicate layer with the Color Overlay layer style you might try different layer blending modes.
For example, below looks the same having the Color Overlay with linear burn on the second layer and changing the layers blend mode to Hue.
You could also put the layer in a group and apply the layer style to the group.

  • Apply adjustment to affect all layers when xport layers to files

    Hi.
Have a set of sequence images opened with Bridge and placed in photoshop as individual layers. I´ve croped the image and
applyed som adjusments eg. curves etc. Now i want to save the layers as files from the file-scripts having the layer adjustments affecting

    /Tedski

Well, you don’t need it anymore, but I still gave a Script that saves the pixel-layers as separate files with the Adjustment Layers flattened in a try; only for psd, though, so no format-selection.
If you want to give it a try …
    // create psd-copies of  all pixel-layers with adjustment layers applied to them;
    // thanks to xbytor for the regexp;

  • PSE7 Newbie - Cropping in layers affecting all layers.

    OK,
I am going to have several questions regarding this project, which is to select several photos in the Organizer, move them to the editor, crop and resize the photos and arrange them on a page, then add some text to create a page in a photo album.  I don't want to use the Photo Album offered by Adobe, I want to learn by doing it myself.  (Actually this is my wife's project and I am trying to show her how to do it -- and as usual, she asks me more questions than I have answers for).
I haven't gotten any responses from my earlier post asking for advice on Moving Photos from Organizer to the Editor, and a I was hoping that someone would clue me in on what I was doing -- like whether what I was doing was right or wrong -- and maybe that would have an effect on my next question.
Which is, when setting up layers for my photo album page, when I crop a photo on one of the layers, it reduces all of the layers to the size of the cropped image -- and I lose everything so to speak.
Am I doing something wrong or is it not possible to crop on a layer without affecting the whole image.  Should I be handling this another way, like doing all of my cropping before I create the layer or is there some secret I haven't discovered yet.
    Ron in Round Rock

    Terri, thanks for the response.
Yes, I do know that I can get pictures directly from the Editor.
But no, actually my question was that I was trying to understand the Organizer / Editor interaction.  I have read that if you pass pictures to the Editor via the Organizer, they are automatically backed up or copied (somehow) -- so if you mess up in the Editor, you won't be accidentally destroying the original.  This sounded like a pretty safe thing to do.
I am just trying to figure out how that works.  When I get to the Editor via the Organizer, the bunch of pictures I selected in the Organizer appeaqr in the Pictures from Organizer Bin.  I think I understand that -- and these are the pictures I want to use in different layers in my Editor session.
However, all of the pictures I selected in the Organizer are also Opened as separate edit sessions in the Editor (I am still trying to figure out what these Editor sessions are called; i.e. how do I refer to them).  I am unsure if this is a good deal because it is not what I wanted to happen (at least I wish I was given an option on this).
So if I want a 2nd photo on a layer, do I drag the photo up to the in-process Editor session from the Pictures from Organizer Bin or from the Open Files Bin.  Both seem to work, but I am sure one or the other is the more correct way to do this.  I would like to understand the differences between the two actions.

I tried to delete the layer attempt again. I am in a Photoshop class, but the work is all online, so all my teacher is going to do is send me to this site. I am trying to edit a photo for this class, and without this working, i go to filter>render>light effects. the bar and panel will pop up for about 2 seconds, then disappear. How do i get the options bar and properties panel to display?

I was about to suggest resetting LE from the Workspace drop-down top right corner, but if you can't see the Options Bar, I guess that is not going to happen.  The normal Tool reset is grey out for LE, so it might be a case of resetting Preferences.

  • How can I merge layers with multiple layer styles added to them?

So I have this issue where I have to merge lots of layers in order to finish the job. Thing is that two of them have layer styles added to them. Each one has two different layers styles added to it. If I try to merge the layers, the effect won't stay the same and only one layer style will apply (and not even this one works correctly). Is there any cure for this? Thank you!

Here is how it looks before I merge the layers.
And here is how it looks after I merge the layers.
Why won't it stay the same?

  • All Layer styles missing from CS5 Photoshop.

This is the fourth time I have gone through this. i open my photoshop to see all my layer styles are gone. Since I have 1000s and most custom made i don't remember all the creations. I have searched all over and the only place that had anything close was a discussion in Elements, but that solution did not work for me. I know I can't be the only person that has gone through this?? Is there anyone that knows how to retrieve all the styles i had just hours ago?

this has happened before when I left my computer on and MS did an auto update that restarted my computer...
This points me to the additional potential for a video driver issue. Simple OS updates and even some hot-fixes, have been known to render the video driver obsolete. That is one reason that nVidia and ATI/AMD issue updates about once per month.
I have Windows set (on all computers) to ONLY notify me of the availability of an update. That way, I manually download and install it/them, and know to keep an eye on the video driver, should an issue arise. I have all nVidia cards, but do not religiously update drivers (there have been some from both nVidia and ATI/AMD, that have been problematic), as so long as my Adobe programs function perfectly, I will wait until something goes awry. I also have all programs set to NOT auto-update, as I have had two auto-updates really mess things up, and once very badly - one was a simple Logitec Set-Point mouse driver update, and it totally killed my computer, requiring a complete rebuild and low-level reformatting of my system HDD. The other was a Java update, that killed a large PSD file, that was Saving, when it started - that one only cost me a redo from an earlier, previous version of the PSD, and the only time that I have had my Preferences corrupted. I had forgotten to turn those auto-updates OFF - my bad.
Let us know more about your display sub-system with make/model and driver info. That would be my "prime suspect" right now.
As for the Elements material, I recall similar in Premiere Elements Styles going missing, but that was many versions ago, and doubt that anything in the solution to that problem would apply to Photoshop, but will go searching for that thread, just in case.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
