Layer Thumbnail Preview Problems CS4

I recently started having an issue with the layer thumbnails.  In the past, when I would create a new shape (with the rectangle tool for instance) the layer thumbnail preview would look like the first image I've inserted.  Now when I create a new shape with the same tool (in a new file) I get a layer thumbnail preview like the second image.  All the panel options are the same, so it isn't the thumbnail size setting under panel options.  I prefer the thumbnail preview from image 1.  I am creating documents that many people will be using (most have basic photoshop skills) so the preview from image 1 is much easier to use and understand.  Any help with this situation would be much appreciated, as I cannot figure out what back end setting has changed?

Thanks!  They are exactly the same in every way.  I think I've figured it out.  It seems the layer preview is based on the size of the file or document.  For instance, the problem started when I created a business card file sized at 3.75" wide by 2.25" high.  Don't know what the magic number is, but when I created a file sized at 5" by 5" square, the layer thumbnail preview looks the way I want it to (image 1).  It's strange, but it looks like I'm going to have to live with it when creating file sizes like this...

Hi jackstick,
Try a library rebuild;
Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
Close iPhoto
Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.

• Thumbnail Preview Problem in LR3

I'm having a problem with some of the thumbnails of tif images edited externally in PS CS3. The images are edited with a silver FX smartfilter but back in LR they do not appear black and white. I've done this hundreds of times and never had this problem. Recently when I return to LR the images show in colour (identical to the RAW files) and not with the black and white adjustments. Opening the files in the finder shows that they are black and white. No module in LR shows them accurately though.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Omar

If you double click on the file, does it open and play?
If you right click, or control- click, on the .MOV file and select "Open with QuickTime Player.app", does it work there? I have hundreds of videos I've made, downloaded, converted, exported, etc., and I've had no problems with any of them in QuickTime. I have only watched an handful in the QuickLook preview mode, but have not had any problems there.
Did you create the file? Do you still have the source files that you could make it again and see if it works.
I hope one of these might be helpful.
Ciao. Joel.

• CS4- No thumbnail preview, hard to look my file.

I wonder why there's no thumbnail preview in CS4?
I'm using Vista and when I switch to view as thumbnails, the psd file seems showing [ps] icons.
These gives problem when I want to search any older psd files I did last month or beyond. I must open all those files one by one just for looking a file. It wastin my time...
When saving the file; there's a 'thumbnail' check box, but what it means?
Is there any solution so I will have the thumbnails preview for psd files? I like the item pictures appear automatically without any procedure when saving any psd.

Try this:
http://www.ardfry.com/psd-codec/
worked in CS4 and is working fine in CS5.

I've recently done a system update & this hasn't cured the problem! Would really appreciate any advise if anybody knows a fix to this.

How to show rating dots and file name underneath thumbnail in Bridge CS4 preview workspace?

Thank you! That was it. The option to change it is not available in preferences (though I believe it was in early CS versions). It's hidden in a dropdown menu associated with an icon at the top. It sure wasn't easy to find, and I probably would not have done so without your lead. Thanks again!

• CS4 Premiere Pro General file format & preview problems

I was redirected here after posting my complaint on Twitter, so please excuse my forum manner.
I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro (CS4) for about a year now, and I've been editing videos along with other packages with no problem. (Only problem being my slow processor). Up until last week Premiere Pro has been completely fine. But seeing I have a project deadline next month, I thought I would spend a day trying to kick-start the video editing.
My source videos were originally photograph-frames animated in Flash CS4 into .MOV, decided to use the H.264 output codec. As I have finished exporting my needed videos, I imported them into Premiere Pro as usual, as I have in the past. But then I encountered the common problem that I have seen quite a few have also encountered with .MOV, or jsut general "no-preview" problem when the source video is fine.
I then took a day to research online about Premiere Pro's compatability with .MOV, among other container and formats. Upon using softwares such as MediaInfo and GSpot, I found that there might have been a problem with missing Codecs within my Adobe package. I then tried to convert the .MOV into .MPG (mpeg2), hoping such standard codec would work with Premiere Pro as they they in the past. No result avail.
I then turned to the uninstall route (retaining user info) and re-installing. The problem has NOT been fixed, what's more is that it crashes almost instantly after I try rendering the workplace. (Even post-rendering does not show the preview, but the files in the Adobe folder, does). Here's a screencap to my latest workplace, if it helps:

Before the re-install, I believe I was running Premiere Pro CS4's latest update (4.2.x) something, now it is back to 4.0.0. But I don't think that is where the main problem is? I recently changed my locale from a certain language to Japanese to run a certain program. Would that be causing the problem(s)?
Does anyone know a way that I can FIX this? Any help is appreciated and I thank you all in advance.
I am using a Sony Vaio NS series laptop,
a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core processor
3GB RAM,
intergrated graphics Intel Chipset Family Series 4( I think).
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I tried moving the Scratch disks from an external portable hard drive to the local hard drive, to no result.
Again, any help is appreciated. I would appreciate direct advice rather than links. Thanks again.
Neo.

I have updated my CS4, Ppro to 4.2.1. The problem still remains. Would it have anything to do with my project setting? I don't have much knowledge to setting one up. The difference between the AVC projects and etc?
EDIT : I took the problem to my lecturer, and he didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but his "magic touch" click on the preview panel (Main composition) has made the video show up! But even after render, it won't play. But scrubbing along frames is now fixed. Any idea what's causing the no-preview-playback?

• Vista x64 SP1 PDF Thumbnail Previews Missing

I recently loaded Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on my PC. After installing Adobe Reader 8.1.1, I don't see the thumbnail previews for PDFs in Windows Explorer - only the Adobe icons. How can I get the thumbnail previews?

Since you people are no help, I will log my own attempts to resolve this issue, in case I need to do it again in the future.
I use Foxit Reader for PDF viewing, because it's much better. I installed Adobe Reader 8.1.1 to get my PDF thumbnails in Windows Explorer back. I also have Photoshop CS4 installed. Here are my steps so far:
1. Ensure that my folders are in "Large Icons" view, make sure "Always show icons..." option is disabled.
2. Uninstall Foxit Reader & Adobe Reader.
3. Remove Adobe Reader & PDF file type entries from registry.
4. Ran Unassoc to remove the PDF file type from Windows.
5. Ran Disk Cleanup to remove Thumbnail files.
6. Installed Adobe Reader 8.1.2.
* At this point, I effectively had a clean install of Adobe Reader. However, my PDF file thumbnails still show up as the stupid Adobe icon.
7. Ran xplorer2 32-bit in Thumbnail view. My PDF thumbnails show up both in the file explorer view and in the preview pane (Draft and Native).
8. Ran Adobe Bridge CS4. PDF thumbnails show up there, too. So, at least I now have 2 effective workarounds to Adobe Reader's ridiculous shortcoming.
9. Ran the 32-bit Windows Explorer. No problem with PDF thumbnails. Hot damn!
10. Closed 32-bit Windows Explorer. Opened regular Windows Explorer and browsed to the same directory. PDF thumbnails still working.
11. Browsed to another folder with Windows Explorer. No PDF thumbnails.
12. Reinstalled Foxit Reader 3.0 so I don't have to suffer through actually using Adobe Reader. Made sure not to set it as the default PDF reader.
13. Verified thumbnails in 32-bit Explorer still work. They do. *******.
There you have it. 3 separate workarounds. Maybe Adobe will fix this problem in their next release. Maybe they'll also create a PDF reader that isn't 100mb. Don't hold your breath. Thank me and follow my instructions instead.

• Strange thumbnail/preview generation

Today Bridge ( cs4 ) decided on his own to recreate the thumbnail and preview cache . Now some pictures have
blown highlights and look horrible - nothing to do with the previews I had before this improvised cache renewal .
I tried to purge it again but it still creates the same washed previews . If I open a file in preview , quicklook or photoshop everything is ok , it's only
the bridge thumbnail/preview that looks wrong . PSD files aren't concerned by the problem , only .jpgs

Hi Ann,
Thanks for your reply. Do you know if there is somewhere this can be logged as a feature request?
It does seem styrange as other NLE's I have used in the past, always retain thumbnail previews between the restarts of the NLE application.

• InDesign thumbnails in Bridge CS4

I've noticed that some InDesign CS2 and CS4 files do not show thumbnails in Bridge CS4. I tried the Build and Export Cache function in the Tools menu and nothing changed. Any suggestions?
Also, I would be interested in a Bridge extension for harvesting thumbnails for old PageMaker 6.5 and 7 files.

• PDF Thumnbnail preview PROBLEM (Windows 7 x32)

I have problems now with my adobe reader thumbnail preview.
This started when I had unistall my Adobe Photoshop cs5 white rabbit to replace with Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. When I uninstalled it with Revounistaller, the thumbnail preview for my pdf files was gone. I tried to do some troubleshootings like:
1. downloading the Adobe thumbnail 64-bit windows 7 provided by programmers but it wont work since i am a 32-bits user.
2. uninstalling and reinstalling adobe reader x
3. reinstalling a previous version of adobe reader
4. uninstalling and reinstalling adobe photoshop cs5 extended
5. downloading and installing Foxit reader; it had resolved the problem but when I reboot the PC, the problem just came back
6.  Downloaded a program that enable thumbnail preview for images like Nikon, PSD files and PDF files
7. Cleaning the registry with tune up 2012 and manually
and none of these had work and restored back my pdf thumbnail preview.
I have also noticed on my registry
AcroExch.Document cannot be solved by my tuneup. Manually, it cannot be deleted.
Oh, I am so desperate in looking ways on how to solve this. I hope experts of Adobe can help me solve my problem/frustration.
By the way, I am Adobe reader is one of my very useful programs.

• Thumbnail Preview for RAW Files Not Appearing in Bridge

Hello,
I'm running Adobe Bridge 5.1 on a Mac OS 10.9.2 (recently upgraded to Maverick) and I can no longer see thumbnail previews for my RAW files (which include .NEF, .CR2 and .RAF) though as of a few days ago this wasn't a problem. Not sure if it's related to the Maverick upgrade... but FYI, I do see thumbnail previews for .TIFF and .JPEG files.
I've already purged my cache generally and have also as a test chosen a local file to purge - that didn't work.
I've restarted Bridge at least 2x by pressing and holding the Option key.
I've also checked for Bridge updates - everything is up to date.
My Cache Options (within Preferences) are set to "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" - both checked.
Also downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.3, installed it but that didn't work.
I can't seem to find my Bridge cache folder or at least what's in the Library's "Caches" folder doesn't include anything for Bridge - see screenshot below.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

To me it seems related to your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) converter. Clue inhere is you only miss the Raw files and have no problems in seeing other formats like jpeg and tiff.
The screenshot you delivered is from the wrong library, however, this same library (the one on system level) also is the location where you should be able to view the correct version of your ACR plugin. The path: library (same as per your screenshot)/Application support/ Adobe/ Plug ins/ CS6/ File Formats. inhere should be only one version of Camera Raw (called: "Camera Raw.plugin") and this should show version 8.3 (141).
I'm not sure about your bridge version number, Bridge 5 comes with PSCS6 but my most recent version of Bridge is 5.0.2.4.
Anyway, if you have only one ACR (8.3) installed in the above mentioned path then you might want to try to delete the Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manually.
For this you have to Quit Bridge and find the user library (by default hidden, use menu Go in Finder and press option key to reveal).
Inhere find the plist file (user(your user name) / library / Preferences  and inhere find and manually delete the file called: "com.adobe.bridge5.plist"
The in same user library find Bridge Cache. User/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files, the adobe Bridge plug in cache and the folder called Cache. delete (or move outside libray) both items.
The restart Bridge (If needed also again hold option key to reset preferences) and this will create fresh files for the previous deleted items, leaving you with an almost out of the box factory set version of Bridge.

• (SOLVED) Taskbar thumbnail preview disappears quickly

I have windows 7 RC on my laptop, Dell 1501.
When I start one or more programs from the taskbar and hover my mouse pointer on them I can see thumbnail previews.
The problem is that thumbnail previews disappear too quickly even though my mouse pointer is still on the opened program in taskbar.
I have to move my mouse so I can get another quick preview.
I notice that if I click on an empty space on the taskbar with the left mouse button, and then point to an opened program the thumbnail preview stays for as long as my mouse pointer is on the program.
Does anybody have that problem?
EDIT:
I notice something else,
if I open regedit or computer management and one of them is active, all other opened programs on the taskbar have long thumbnail preview.
But if for example windows explorer is the active window on taskbar, thumbnail previews stay for a short time.
SOLUTION: dell 1501 specific and may be bios version
1. shut down the laptop
2. remove the power supply and the battery
3. press and hold the power button (I pressed it 2-3 times and kept it pressed for about 1 second) --- obviously the laptop will not start.
4. plug in the battery and the power supply, start the laptop and check if the problem is gone.

teeqeela: "I can't believe it! Same dell, same problem, same solution. Thanks man!"
If that was for me, my pleasure.
Noel Carboni: "I'd be curious to know whether you've found the reason it was happening"
I'm curious about the reason, but not prepared to spend the time to find it; I don't think we'd learn enough from it to justify the time. Back pre-Windows pre-Internet I spent weeks painfully debugging. It's
hugely more complicated now, the Internet finds most things quickly anyway, and the tedious tracing doesn't bring many useful insights. I can't give answers, I'll just repeat the facts - any proposed answer must address them. Some details in the numbered points
I made a few messages back. The problem first manifested (for me, and I believe for others) some months after installing Win7 on Inspiron 1501 (specifically that machine). It's cleared by removing all power, and by a couple of software tricks (disable gadgets,
registry hack). Once cleared by power removal, it stays clear for weeks (not months) then recurs (don't yet know how permanent other fixes will turn out to be). One thinks of things such as some bit in system memory that gets set somehow, and never reset until
power is removed (it might be a memory location always alive and watching for a wake-on-lan or other wakeup event), which Win8 expects to find reset. But why the month's delay? Win7 (32- and 64-bit) works fine on Inspiron 1501, but is not officially supported,
and some non-Dell drivers must be used; they work fine. I could go on till the cows come home, but I've got myself a usable machine, and told others about it, so that's it.

• Thumbnails & Preview filenames do not match Master filename

Hi - can't find any threads regarding this...
Basic problem is that Aperture is not renaming the Preview & Thumbnail filenames when it renames images on import - anyone else experiencing this problem?
I have a managed Aperture Library (2.1.3). I rename my image files on import using the Import dialogue set to Custom Name & Counter and Apply to Master filename checked. However the Preview file, the Thumbnail file and the Finder folder holding the images do not get renamed.
Since the Media Browser uses the Preview files rather than the Master files when importing images into other apps (eg. Pages or uploading to a blog) the files used all have the wrong names.
For Instance:
I have a canon image file named IMG1234.JPG.
I import this file to Aperture and use the import dialogue to rename to Custom Name SUNSETNEVADA.JPG (with apply to Master Filename checked).
In Aperture what I see in my project is SUNSETNEVADA.JPG as the Version Name and the Master filename - as expected.
However the Thumbnail & Preview files are still called IMG1234.JPG - you can't see this directly from within Aperture you need to open Finder and drill down thru the Library package where you find that your Master file is called SUNSETNEVADA.JPG but it lives in a folder called IMG1234.JPG with a Thumbnail file called IMG1234.JPG and a Preview file called IMG1234.JPG.
I then open Pages and open the Media Browser.
I select Photos, and then my Aperture library, find my project and select SUNSETNEVADA.JPG.
The file that gets imported into Pages is the preview file called IMG1234.JPG.
The same happens in any situation where I use the Media Browser to browse the Apertuer library and import images, because the Media Browser always uses the Preview file.
The only work around I have is to export images directly from Aperture and then browse the Finder to import them to other apps - avoiding the Media Browser and Preview files altogether.
I have notified Apple Pro Support who claimed to be unaware of this error.
If you have seen the same problem please notify Apple Support.
Any thoughts or solutions welcome. Thanks

I am seeing the same thing, as I have lost all my masters and can only get my pics by copying preview files, which all have the old names.
