Layer thumbnails

I was watching a J. Kost flash turorial and she selected the option to change the size of layer thumbnails and the options showed samples next to the size selection circles. When I went to change the size of my layer thumbnails all I saw were selection circles and no size sample pictures next to them. Is that a PC vs Mac thing or is something missing from my version of CS4? I believe I saw thumbnail sample sizes in CS3.
Don

Hi Don,
You are hitting a known Win only issue with certain types of plug-ins. We are working with 3rd party plug-in developers to try and resolve the non-displaying icons.
The workaround at present is to select Help> About Plug-in> NIK (3rd party vendor plug-in). [If you have multiple plug-ins installed you may have to go thru all of them]. Just bringing the About box and dismissing it clears things up for the session. Unfortunately, it only works for that session and must be repeated for each launch of Ps.

  • Wrong Layer Thumbnail Aspect Ratio

    In Photoshop CS5
'Clip Thumbnails to Layer Bounds' is checked
I have an Illustrator CS5 Smart Object, with a simple square shape,
but, the layer thumbnail in Photoshop layers panel may show a rectangle instead of the square shape.
This behavior is inconsistent so I'm assuming it's a bug.
Can the thumbnail cache be flushed somehow so it's regenerated correctly?
Is there something to avoid doing to prevent this?

I would post that one on the PowerBook forum, but I suspect that you may have reached a limit of a 5 year old software that predates HD tv.

  • Layer transform lag solved by turning off layer thumbnails

I was looking into why layer transforms was lagging this morning and found some results in the pshop cs6 beta threads, one user suggested hiding the layers panel / swapping with channels. I did that and it was faster, then I thought maybe it was the layer thumbnails that was causing the problem, so I turned off the thumbnails and there was a noticable speedup in dragging grouped layers.
Before I did this thumbnails were set to crop to layer bounds, so I THINK something is not quite right there.
    -ryder

Turning off thumbnails works to a point, but if you are moving massive amounts of layers photoshop cs6 will take a long pause. I am guessing the layer stack i'm moving around 60 layers nested (user interface elements)
The system is a dell M6600 / quadro 4000 / win7 (64-bit) / 32gb of ram, I just updated to the latest nvidia drivers today, made sure of it. (296.70)
The issue is similar/same as the one discussed in:

  • Background layer thumbnail not appearing

When I open an image in photoshop (from camera raw), the image appears in the center screen, but in the "Layers" panel, the thumbnail in the background layer does not show the image. Instead, it shows an icon that appears to be the "brush tool" inside a square. I cannot change it to the opened image, very frustrating and, probably, very simple, but I cannot find the solution. Please help. Thank you, HONDO1717

Thanks for the screenshots, now I'm think I see what's going on.
So if I understand correctly, you open an raw image from Adobe Camera Raw and you expect to see a thumbnail in the Layers panel. Normally that's how it works for me.
The brush icon that you see in the Layers panel means that layer thumbnails are turned off. Here's how to turn them on in your Mac:
In the Layers Panel Control-click the blank space under the first layer and choose Small, Medium, or Large thumbnails from the context menu that appears.
You should then have a thumbnail of your opened file.

  • Cs6 photoshop layer thumbnail missing

The cs6 photoshop layer thumbnail is missing when I work with layers. The background layer shows, but when I use duplicate or new adjustment layer it's a white blank. This just started. Help?

This feature will available to you on June 17th when Photoshop CC launches along with the rest of the new CC apps.
Sorry to get you all excited about these new features, only to leave you hanging with a month-long wait.

  • Layer Thumbnail Preview Problems CS4

I recently started having an issue with the layer thumbnails.  In the past, when I would create a new shape (with the rectangle tool for instance) the layer thumbnail preview would look like the first image I've inserted.  Now when I create a new shape with the same tool (in a new file) I get a layer thumbnail preview like the second image.  All the panel options are the same, so it isn't the thumbnail size setting under panel options.  I prefer the thumbnail preview from image 1.  I am creating documents that many people will be using (most have basic photoshop skills) so the preview from image 1 is much easier to use and understand.  Any help with this situation would be much appreciated, as I cannot figure out what back end setting has changed?

Thanks!  They are exactly the same in every way.  I think I've figured it out.  It seems the layer preview is based on the size of the file or document.  For instance, the problem started when I created a business card file sized at 3.75" wide by 2.25" high.  Don't know what the magic number is, but when I created a file sized at 5" by 5" square, the layer thumbnail preview looks the way I want it to (image 1).  It's strange, but it looks like I'm going to have to live with it when creating file sizes like this...

  • Layer Thumbnail Icon

    Hi All,
I would appreciate if anyone can help me to figure out why my Layer Thumbnail Icon is different from 2 various psd files. Attached are the screen shot. Ist sreen shot layer thumbnail has represented icon to the adjustment whereas the 2nd screen shot doesnt have the icon. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Masters.
You guys are right. The specific graphical icon is determined by its image size and canvas size. Thanks for all the effort and time spent.

  • How to change 'half-moon' Layer Thumbnail to a graph

I've noticed that in some of my images, the Layers Thumbnail -- the black & white circle between the Layer Visibility and the Layer Mask -- is not a circle but a graph. How do I change from one to the other?
I can understand the graph, but what is the circle supposed to represent?

Thanks Zeno, for the suggestion. I had already checked out the section in PS Help that you provided the link for, but I couldn't work out why, when the setting for Layer Thumbnails were all set to small, that some of the images had graphs and other had the circles. You confirmed the solution and now I know where the problem was:
    * the images that had the graph were vertical format and there was enough vertical space to fit in the graph;
    * the images that had the circle were horizontal format. The vertical dimension must have been just under the size limit for the graph.
A bit confusing. I assumed the thumbnails would be scaled so that on a certain thumbnail size setting, the vertical dimension of the thumbnails was the same so that the spacing of the various layers remained constant. Not so. The longest dimension appears to remain constant.
    Anyway, problem fixed. Thanks.

  • Ilustrator CC: can't turn off layer thumbnails?

Has anyone else noticed that you can no longer turn off layer thumbnails completely by choosing Panel Options from the Layers palette options menu and choosing "Small" for Row Size?
Even if you choose "Medium" for Row Size so that the Thumbnails checkboxes below become ungrayed and choosable, if you UNcheck the box for Layers, the thumbnails remain stubbornly ON.
Very annoying. It has long been known that constantly refreshing layer thumbnails reduces performance in Illustrator, especially in highly layered illustrations....which seems to be all I'm working on lately.

Experienced same issue. Tech support had me revert from CC 2014 back to CC.
You can turn off thumbnails in CC.
    Tech support:
We have checked for this issue and it is reproducible on our end too.
We have checked in CC 2014, CC version and CS6 versions for this issue and found this issue with CC 2014 version.
Thank you for bringing this into our notice. We are logging a ticket for the same and our engineering team will have a look into it.
In the meanwhile, I would suggest you that you can use this option in CC version as it is working in CC version.

  • Layer Thumbnail Size In Illustrator CS-6

This is probably an FAQ but for the life of me, I can't find it in your database(s).  Simple:  in my Layers tabs, how do I control the size of those thumbnails?  By default those thumbnails are tiny and I want to make them larger.
So in the enclosed image example, I want to make the thumbnail of Title stuff larger.
    Thank you!

It is indeed possible.  From the Layer Flyout Menu:
    But thank you anyway...

  • Layer thumbnails in Layers palette empty

One of our users sometimes can't see the contents of the thumbnails for each layer in the layer palette.

Any ideas on why and how to fix it?

  • Useless layer thumbnails in CS4

In previous versions of Photoshop it was possible to recognize adjustment layers by their thumbnails, in CS4 that has been removed except for gradients, patterns and solid color.
I find that a wrong move. Thumbnails are handy, they allow you to quickly see where you've used your different adj. layers (useful if you've a big fan of non-destructive editign like me). The only thing that is left is the names, but
    a) names don't view as fast as icons
    b) it basically limits you of using names, because once you do, you have no clue what the layer is unless you click on it
Why oh why remove the different icons and turn it one and the same??
Don't tell me that there is no setting that can fix this....sigh

    M.
I just checked on my version of CS4 (Windows XP) and the icons on the adjustment layers are all different. In fact, they are the same icons as shown on the new adjustments panel (Histogram for levels, V for Vibrance, etc.).
There have been some weird panel/icon things reported lately that appear to be related to plug-ins (Nik products, for example). You might want to look through some of those threads.

  • Preserving layer thumbnail size (CS4)?

I prefer to enlarge the thumbnails in the layers panel and would like to keep the size I choose whenever I open a new file.  It seems that saving the workspace with enlarged thumbnails does not accomplish this, and I have to resize them every time I open a file.  Is there a way to preserve my thumbnail size preference without having to reset it every time?

Cool, that worked. On a Windows PC, the folder is located here:
    C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_US\New Document Profiles
Ok so that works for when you start with a blank file and are creating from scratch, but what about if you want to open existing AI files and retain the larger thumbnail size setting? Hmmmm...
At this point, I've probably spent more time on this than I ever would have by just manually changing the setting, but still...

  • Layer thumbnail , vector mask thumbnail problem

    How do I make it?

I'm having this problem as well: I can't edit vector masks when they're disabled. This is majorly annoying, because I relied on this feature before to be able to shape vector masks accurately against a photo. I can't think why they would eliminate this feature, since it is so useful. Please restore it!

  • Please bring color back to vector shapes in Layer Palette with no-thumbnails.

Please bring the color box back to vector shapes!
I am one not to use images in my layer palette, and in CS5 this was a breeze, but now the icons are different, there is no white box on the icons anymore (which really helps when scanning, and differentiating from folders), and I can't preview the color of the vector shape that I created in Photoshop. Vector shapes are a big part of my work. Before it would show a box with the color, now it shows nothing. The linking vector box is not neccesarily important as long as when I click it, the points become live.
Also the dividing lines for layers is not strong enough, doesn't have to be white, but at least gray. Black is definately not helping to divide the layers. And for nested layers, having the dividing line go half way to the edge really helps alot.
I noticed that a lot is different about the "no-thumbnails" version of the layer palette, and some I can live with, some changes I cannot. But being able to preview the color of a vector shapes is important for me, and seeing the white box behind the icon really helps when scaning a lot of layers. I've attached a comparison, also I have attached an image of how my layer palette looks on a daily basis from CS5 and CS6, I also opened the folder, and matched the palettes so you can see what I mean. Those little things really make a difference when scanning up and down 50-100 layers.
Even though setting the layer palette to no images may be a rarity among photoshop users, it's something that I value in photoshop, especially since my documents have hundreds of layers.

I think it was a fair assessment given the circumastances of the answer you provided, Jeanne. Also, another thing is that posting under an "employee" account, you are speaking for the company. You are representing the company whether it is your intention or not. Even if you explictly state that what you say is your personal opinion, people might have mixed feelings about what you say and mistake it for a belief that the whole company shares. So be careful with that, just as a note for the future.
But anyway, as for the issue at hand... That still doesn't give us anything other than "we won't do it." And again, I advise you to look through the post I referenced to. There are some very easy solutions there that help make the layers palette much easier to scan and work with. It's not too difficult to fix this and as already said above, you're already working on a fix for the thumbnails themselves anyway.
The solution to this problem could be as easy as this (I can provide another graphic for the darker UI settings, if you want):
    What you do is:
Display a bigger thumbnail of the layer icon (yes, that will use up more space in the no-thumbnail view, but that's not a huge problem compared to what you have now)
Clearly display the content of the layer (in this case, both layers are gradients, but it could also just have a solid color fill)
Lighten the color of unselected layer's names (to make the properties of the layer itself stand out better),
Make the layer thumbnail itself (if it's a vector layer) toggle the path outline on and off and
Bring back the separation line from CS5, which indicated the layer's position in the grouping hierarchy.
If you do that, you've already solved quite a lot of the scannability and readability problems. In the future, you could improve the iconography to be better optimized for quick scanning, to make them stand out better (give them more depth) and so on, but for now, this should be enough to make things better for most people. And also, this will not take up too much development time. You've already got the logic of the separation lines from CS5, for example. Shouldn't be too much of a problem to implement in CS6. I'm not going to speak for the other things, because I don't know too much of the internal workings of the program, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Trust me, this change will make a world of difference. People will love this even if they don't understand that it's there or why they love it.
Would you like me to provide detailed wireframes and documentation, so your designers don't have to worry their heads about this one? Just asking, because this is a change that should really be pushed through, no matter what.
    Cheers,
    Riho Kroll
