Layering Problem:Assigning multiple objects to a layer removes previous layering

HI!
I have a massive problem.
Let's say I have 5 objects, object "1" to object "5".
If I assign object "1" to layer "a", object "2" to layer "b", and so on until object "5"
to layer "e", and then assign all 5 objects to layer named "all", here's what happens:
1) objects "2" till "5" are removed from layers "b" till "e"
2) All 5 objects are placed in layers "a" and "all"
What I want is for them to stay in their respective layers AS WELL as their newly appointed layer(s). This problem does not occur if I assign
objects 1-5 one by one into layer "all".
I'm doing something more complicated with 100 shapes and a few hundred connectors and assigning them one by one is just not acceptable.
Is there a way I can fix this? I couldn't find anything online...

Problem with Multiple Objects

Greetings,
I've been experiencing a strange issue when I have multiple objects in a single document.
From time to time, Pages deletes an image and then replaces it with a duplicate of another image in the document. The first image disappears, and I end up with two instances of the second image.
The event seems to occur when I close and save. The problem is intermittent. However, I have been able to reproduce it while scrutinizing my design process to make sure that I'm not responsible for the error. I am very sure that this is a software issue.
I usually work in Word Processing mode, with tiff images inserted as floating objects in a two column format.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas about how to fix it?

The immediate problem I can see is that several of your images have exactly the same name:
image1.png
How have you distinguished these on import and kept them apart in Finder?
I think this is a case of User Error, where you have mixed up identically named files.
To correct this, gather up all your images and rename them to, preferably, what they are.
There is however a problem in OSX. It tenaciously hangs onto the original file's name to track it even after you move it.
So open each file in turn in Preview, make a very slight edit like a small crop and rename it.
I suggest using 2 naming conventions:
Example: 01.03 xxxxx.png
Where that is page 01 image 03 and xxxxxx = the psalm name.
This way you can easily differentiate the images and place them in order in the file.

Select multiple objects faster, on layer panel?

Hi everyone. I've asked my designers friends, but nobody knews the answer - so I need to post here.
Question : Is it possible to select a few objects by "sliding a mouse", on layer panel?
For example, you can hold down the mouse, slide to lock multiple objects. It's fast and easy!
But if I need to select, say, only red, blue, yellow stars... I need to click the ◎ icons to select each sublayer.
This drives me nuts, especially when I have so many objects to be selected on layer panel.
I use CS6 on Mac.
Is there any secret shortcut key to select objects on layer panel by "sliding a mouse"?

Globally change values of multiple objects under same layer?

It appears there is no way to do this but I'm going to ask any how in case I'm wrong.
I have some 200 objects (individual dots for city names, all the same width and height) on a map, and all under one layer. I would like to change the size of these dots globally without selecting and editing each individual object. Using the selection or direct selection tool and selecting two or more dots treats them as a group rather than allowing me to change the all objects together. I have tried with each dot grouped and ungrouped, but each time two or more are selected the width and height of the size of the entire selected area surrounding the dots appears rather than the actual width and height size of the dots. Transform and Transform Each allows percentages, but I want to put in a specific width and height number for all the objects. I believe I once select all such objects in the past and then deselected one object which (as I recall) allowed me to enter specific the common width and height numbers for the objects, but this does not now work (if it ever did in the past). Any ideas? (Working in CS3)

Hey, don't blame FreeHand! It has symbols, too!
Be glad you were working with dots and not shield-shaped highway signs.
FreeHand’s Find & Replace path shape, swap object with symbol (Library Panel), and set fixed dimensions (Object Panel) give the user several ways to do what you want to do. It’s not so easy in AI.
James Talmage has written a useful ‘replace with symbol’ script. You can find it here:

Is there a way to shift select multiple objects in layer palette, not just highlight multiple objects?
I would want to do this when I have a bunch of objects hidden under some other objects on the artboard. This feature is available in PSD, so I assume Illustrator should have it.

I'm using CS4 & below.
Highlighting object - click on object in layers palette & it turns blue
Select object - click on object in layers palette to the right of the circle, which creates a square, and selects the object on the artboard
How do I shift-select multiple objects in the layers palette...select 50 objects with a click, then a shift-click? Shift-select works for highlighting, but not selecting. On most programs shift-select is used to grab a bunch of stuff...:0)
In the past I have inadvertently selected multiple objects in the layers palette, by somehow alt?-dragging over the layers...or something...I can't re-create it.

Delete multiple Layers by selecting multiple object?

Hi Designers,
I'm going to connect my AI file to After effect.
So I had to create lots of layers in order to edit them seperatly in After effects.
But it seems like my amount of layers are too large because AE always crashes (not responding -> Force quit)
So I wanna break some stuff down in multiple AI files, but I don't wanna go and select every layer and delete it.
That would take too much time.
Is there a way to select the multiple objects in Illustrator and delete that but also its layer its in?

You could do that via a script, here is a quick example:

Selecting Multiple Objects with Output Preview Causing Problems

I'm trying to edit a PDF and need to select multiple objects. Without Output Preview open, I can easily select all the items I need using the shift key. With Output Preview open, whenever I try to select the second object, Output Preview creates a sticky note, instead of selecting the second object.
I am also using the PitStop Pro plug-in.
Any idea how to correct this problem? Thanks!

Unfortunately it seems that the new sticky note feature with the output preview in Acrobat XI uses the same keyboard shortcut as multiple selection tool in Pitstop (shift).
Closing the output preview is the easiest way to get around this issue.
We could consider changing the key for multiple selection in PitStop, but 'shift' is pretty much a default, so what could we change it too?

Problem about financial reporting studio(assign multiple db connection)

I need to assign multiple database connections to a grid in Oracle Hyperion Financial Reporting Studio
To do this, I performed the following steps:
- Open a report.
- In a grid, select one column for which I want to change the database connection.
- In the Column Properties sheet, click the Select Database Connection button, .
- In the Select a Database Connection dialog box, select a database connection from the Database Connection drop-down list, then Click OK.
- In the Map Dimensions Between... dialog box, map dimensions between the default database connection and the selected database connection. I do this by selecting a dimension from the pull-down list in the right column for each dimension in the left column.
- Optional: Select an alias table for the new database connection.
- Click OK.
But after last step I have received next error:

java.lang.NullPointerException
Can someone explain the source of this error?
And help me please solve this problem because I didn’t receive figures in that column where I changed database connection.

I'm sure that both DB connections has the same dimension hierarchy. I can open the repot, but in it I don't see figures in that column where I've changed database connection...

Updation problem while creating multiple objects from enterprise portal

Hi All,
From enterprise portal i am calling an RFC 'BAPI_PROJECT_MAINTAIN' to create objects .
While trying to create multiple objects simultaneously it gives error "sapuser is currently using, can't be created".
It seems like as i am creating multiple objects by calling RFC repeatedly , while the first one is not updated fully i am sending the second value to be processed.
Pl. tell me how to overcome this. Do I need to add any sleep time in EP or any other method is there in SAP to overcome this situation.

However, the project role type does not allow several staffings to be edited at the same time in the project role.

The system does not allow this constellation of data when saving.
Procedure
Check and correct the start and finish dates of the staffings affected.

For multiple staffings in the same time frame, check the option of 'Edit in Parallel' in the Role Type settings in SPRO.

CS6: Select multiple objects - Hide border?

Hi!
Lots of our layouters are bothered because of the same thing: If you select multiple objects in CS6, you'll get a border which surrounds all of the selected objects. That way it's quite difficult to see, which items are already selected and which aren't, especially if they are all aligned.
I hope, you understand what I'm talking about. I displayed it in the following screenshot.
The text frame and the yellow frame are selected. The red one isn't but you have to look closely to see that, because there is this thin border spanning over all of the objects, covering the red object, too.
Is it somehow possible to hide / disable this "extra" border? If you have a lot of objects on the page (with backgrounds and everything), the layouters have some problems with seeing what they already selected and what they didn't select yet.

@Bob: quite hard, if you have about 50 elements on one layer (the layouts are done with only two major layers .... don't ask me -.-)
@pixxel schubser: nope, I mean the overall border, that covers all of them in one big frame...
@Sandee: I know. But tell that to 20+ layouters, who want their program to work the same way as it did before (CS3...)... They are really confused by this extra border.
@Ellis: Wow, I didn't try that! Great, no border!!! Only that seems to be a bit buggy. If you have a lot of objects, after time it seems to "lose" some of them you selected at the beginning. Still, I'll tell the layouters, maybe this will make them a little happier Thanks a lot!

Actions- move object to another layer

Is it possible in Illustrator CS4 to record an action that selects a particular object in a layer called base & move the selected object into another layer called blue & lock the layer that the object was moved? Any suggestions are welcome

An Action can record the assignment of a Note to a selected object.
An Action can select an object by its Note.
An Action can record the locking of a Layer if it is done in the Layer Options dialog, not by just clicking the Lock icon.
The problem is recording a step that will switch you to another Layer. However, selecting an object makes its Layer the current Layer. So, you can, for example:
Assume you have two Layers: Base and Blue.
Assume there is an object on Layer Blue with a Note: "OnBlue".
Assume there is a selected object on Layer Base that you want to move to Layer Blue.
The Action would:
1. Cut the selected object to the Clipboard.
2. Lock the current Layer Base. (Toggle Dialog Off.)
3. Select the object that is noted “OnBlue”. (Thus, LayerBlue becomes the current Layer.)
4. Paste (or PasteInFront or PasteInBack to cause it to paste in the same location).

Multiple objects to have the same rollover state at the same time (but link to different pages)

I have a mac
I would like to know how i can have multiple images with the same rollover states - but which show up at the same time on more than one image, (but each item to have its own linking property applied to it)?
see image below: i want both box 'A' to pop with the same rollover state even if I'm hovering on just one of the boxes. But i want each of the boxes to link to different pages in my website.
Ive tried grouping the images and moving them to their own layer, but the rollovers aren't 'linking' together on multiple objects

It's not, but you don't need that to achieve the behavior you've described. A1, a trigger, will have the states and hyperlink you desire. On rollover it will show its rollover state and will show its target container which will be directly on top of A2. It will look like a rollover state for A2. Repeat this for A2, B1 and B2 and I believe you achieve the behavior you've described. It's just a different way of approaching the problem (that happens to fit the tools available in Muse).

"Object has visibility layer override" .. how do i stop this?

using CS3...I understand what makes this come up but dont understand how to make things update...
Here is one example where this comes up. I have a bunch of business cards with each being its own file, each with a 2nd layer to it that is just the cut area border around it. When I print each card, i want the cut border to show for the customer. When i go to actually print, i will put them all on the same sheet and print at one time. I do this by dragging the ID files into the document that will have all the cards. Of course any changes made to the individual files will automatically (sometimes manually) update on the sheet with all the cards. The only problem I run into is if after I add these cards to the sheet and they still have those borders on it, I then have to go into the individual files and turn off the layers that have that border but this will never update in the linked file on the document using it. Instead with layers, I get this yellow and red eyeball that seems to say "Object has visibility layer override". The borders will still show on the document its linked to but the individual file, the borders are not there.
How do I get the files using the linked ID files to read just as the individual files are without showing those layers? The only way around this I can find is to remove each card, turn off the layers in the individual files, and put the cards back on...which doesnt always do the trick, but still. Thanks!

Select the link on the page, then go to the layer visibility options dialog. There's a filed there to keep or update the layer visibility when updating the link. Perhaps you need to change that.

Need to shift multiple objects across many frames

I don't know if this is even possible, but what I'd like to
do is shift multiple objects, in multiple layers, across multiple
frames. The problem is that I built a complex animation as a movie
symbol within the root movie. It got so complex, however, that I'd
like to just go ahead and make it the main timeline for the root
movie. But when I copy and paste the frames from the symbol back
out into the root timeline, the location is wrong. Everything is in
the correct location relative to each other element, but wrong
relative to the stage. Is there any way to grab everything up in
all of those layers and frames and just shift it all over to where
it's supposed to be? Or can I somehow shift the stage under it?
