Layering question

I have, unfortunatly, made the mistake of putting all the objects in my
drawing on one layer; there are about 60 items. I'd like to have them all
on seperate layers. Is there a way to put them all on individual layers in
one shot instead of doing it one by one?

Each object on it's own layer is little better than all on one layer. Effectively, that's what you have. Expand a layer by clicking on the east-pointing arrow to the left of the layer name. This will allow you to see each object on that layer. Double-click on a name to change the name in the Layers palette.

i have a question about autoblend question
i have to say that autoblend in cs5 , cs6 work very well
but may i know which is the component that handles about blend many layers?
there is a script but there are few lines of code
is there a plugin ? in a components? in hardcoded in the program?
because it gives great results but i have not a lot of conrol in this process
i don't like hdr , i like blend many exposure
i know only photomatix that gives me some control and enfuse
but in photoshop i can 't find a way to control the blending process

I don't have a definitive answer, but I have a feeling that a student teacher version is not eligible for an upgrade discount. You own the CS5 perpetual license, and can install it on two computers at the same time as CS6, CC etc. That will be the case in perpetuity. (not sure why I didn't just type 'forever' back there, or alert the cliche police 'Going forward')

If you got the Photoshop / Lightroom Photography plan at a mere $10 a month, the price of CS6 would keep you subscribed for > three years. Photoshop CC has a lot of wonderful features CS6 does not have, and will never have, and CC will be be constantly updated 'in perpetuity'. ;-) $10 a month! Heck, what's not to like about that?!!!

Picture locked, but need to arrange clips in layers question

Hey guys,
I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to lock all the clips in time but still be able to arrange them in layer order. In other words I'm arranging the sound clips to specific layers (all narration on one layer, fx on another, etc) but I can't allow any clips to change their time on the timeline.
Is there a cheat for this or do I just have to be really careful.

Well I'd not turn on snapping, because I may not want to snap at all. If you hold down that shift key, you'll see you can do this quickly... zooming in to see say 3 minutes at a time aught to be close enough I'd think. It's easier than you think...
You have to work pretty hard at NOT keeping the audio clips in the same place if you keep the shift key down during the drag up or down.

PSE 4 Layering Questions

I am new to PSE and am having a hard time getting the layering right, I need some "laymans" terms and easy first steps to work with, any help is greatly appreciated. For example I wanted to change an image to B&W (no problem doing that) then colorize the flowers the girl is holding, but I just couldn't get it to work. I'm lost, please help!! Thanks so much,

To add to what Charles said..
If you paint too far and reveal excess color, simply switch to white and paint to "erase" the excess. That's the benefit of using an adjustment layer.
You might also want to use a soft brush if you want a soft transition between the B&W and color portions.

CS6 Layers question

I thought I had this down pat but do not. I have text on a page and simply want to add a colored background to just that page. So I select the rectangle tool and create a square about half the page size then fill it with a color. I see that the text i had goes to the bottom of the page where the box ends as its on the same layer.
I tried various stacking methods and and send to back but still the text does not appear on top of the rect background like I want.
Any help?

Create a new layer on the bottom of the stack.
Lock all the other layers (tip: you can alt/opt click the lock area for
the layer you want to remain unlocked)
With the bottom layer being the only available layer you can easily draw
your frame and fill it with the color you want.
Alt/Opt click the lock for the background layer and all the other will
be unlocked and background will be locked.

Layers Question

Elements 10
Load photograph.
Create duplicate layer to work on.
Create adjustment layer (but also tried this with just "Layer").
Move adjustment layer to top layer and make sure I am working on that layer.
Select brush.
Brush color to black, opaique to 100%.
Move back onto top layer to paint... nothing.
Try switching from forground to background... nothing.
Try every switch and button I can think of...nothing -- brush doesn't do anything at all.
If I move back to the duplicate background layer, brush works... but not on any layer above.
Seems like i am doing everything the tutorials on Youtube do... but the brush doesn't leave any trace anywhere on the top layers. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
this normally appears to happen when we have added an adjustment layer and not made any change to the settings. Hence, as there is not change done, hence there is no change visible when you paint with the brush on the mask.
when you arepainting on the image(mask) to hide the selected areas, notice the mask added to the adjustment layer,( adjacent to the adjustment layer icon)
If you can find some areas black and some white, this means brush is working fine but you need to make some changes to the adjustment settings of that layer from the "Adjustment panel"( you will get this by double clicking on the left icon of the adjustment layer, a panel will show up, either floating in the application or tabbed below/above the layers panel)
You move some sliders of the settings to see the difference on the image.

Illustrator - After Effects Layers Question

Having problems importing Illustrator layers into After Effects. I've tried all the recommendations from "release to layers" to "setting colors to rgb". When I import into After Effects and select "composition - retain layer size". AI layers are sub layers too.
I don't see the individual layers to animate.

Photoshop merging layers question.

hey guys. So i have a complicated photoshop document that I am going to use for silk screening. Aka i have layers that have adjustments of threshold, with different blending options, etc. I want to merge it down to a flat image so I can select each color on the document (the process for silkscreening), but when i flatten image, merge visible, or even save as a tiff or jpg, the threshold layers dont merge for some reason. Any ideas?

I think it might be because they're not actually layers, but avatars of alpha channels. But really, don't accept that as the last word on the subject.

Photoshop video layers question..

hi all i just wondered can you ",say import an avi video into photoshop and draw on each inividual frame with the drawing tools" and then make it back into a movie which includes all the changes you have made??

Yes. That's exactly what the feature is for. Note that Video Layers are only supported in Photoshop Extended.

Layers Question CS3

I am confused by how to get the layers to not show work on another layer ex:
1. My healing brush or clone-stamp work will become visable (the acctual brush moves I did) when I switch to a different layer.
OR
2. My brush, dodging burning etc will not work where I have used for example the healing brush or clone-stamp on the same or another layer.
OR
3. If I switch the layer order around either the brush work appears but most likely the healing brush and clone-stamp work
I know its most likely a silly littel thing to do to prevent all of the above from happening, just haven't been able to figure it out yet.

I think you are going to need to describe the problem more clearly. I doubt that anyone can figure out what you are talking about. I certainly can't.

Camera and/or null layers question

Hi - I am having a heck of a time understanding camera null layers. I have 3 separate photos on different layers and a solid background on the bottom layer. i simply want to fly a camera in between the separation of the photos so all three look like they're flying toward or past the camera.
every video tutorial i find seems to have an assumption that i know or understand this but i really don't - i need to start from the very beginning. does anyone know of a nice simple step by step video online that can help me?

Start here to learn After Effects.
You don't need to use null layers to control cameras. It's just a way to make certain things easier. But it makes things easier at the expense of a somewhat complex setup. If you're a beginner, you don't need to be messing with that.

Basic swf & layers question

If i make a swf of a dot at center stage and publish it, then
add it to a layer in DW, it shows up as a grayed out box blocking
whats underneath making it difficult to work on whats underneath,
also much larger than the actual movie needs to be.
1. Can I Do anything about the grey to view whats underneath?
2. Can I crop the movie so that the layer is smaller only
showing the area of interest?

What "gray box"? is it a rectangular graphic in your flash
doc or the stage color? Or are you
looking at it in the DW authoring tool?
You can't "crop" flash movies - but rather you can edit the
width and height in the html (or DW)
after it has been embedded into the page.
If you must "crop" - go back to source FLA and edit the width
and height of your movie - but flash
only "crops" from right and bottom edges of the stage - so if
your circle needs to be center - then
you will need to use the align panel to center it again.

Stoopid layers question

Is the number of layers stored as part of the PSD file or do you have to run a function to count them?

The newer versions of Photoshop do have a document descriptor key for number of layers. But that number may not match the DOM number of layers because the number in the descriptor counts each layerSet twice. Below is code that will get the number of DOM layers/layerSets. It can be modified to just count layers or layerSets if needed.

Editing layers question

I need to be able to add layers on top of a photo like the right hand corner of the image. I can do this with squared or circled layers but need to be able to curve the line and mask off (which it looks like to me) the white, red and the photo. Isn't this a form of layer editing?

Ok, I have been practicing gettting the curves to look the way I want, I know how to move the lines closer together and to add curves where I need. In the attached is a mock of the paths which I saved to a jpg for now. I noticed that the paths cannot be on separate layers, at least from what I see as I tried to put each path on a separate layer and could not. So now that I have this part done I need to make the layers separate colors like the second pic in the attached. Any help?

Import video frames to layers question..

When importing a rather large file, it is taking the space up on my C: drive which is an SSD and doesn't have a ton of room. By chance, is there a way to change it, so that photoshop will use the space on my secondary drive instead?
