Layering sounds

Im trying to get all my questions out today. I am trying to figure out a way to layer different sounds into one. Like on EXS 24 is there a way that you can combine several sounds into one, using the given sounds?

Easiest way is to just create a new track, referencing a new Instrument. Otherwise it is usually a waste of time and loss of control.

  • Layering sounds = volume clips. A simple way to normalize the sounds?

I am wondering if there is some way to "normalize" the sounds automatically if I am layering a sound. For example:
    Patch 1: a single piano (0db)
Patch 2: a single piano layered with strings(+3db)
Patch 3: a single piano layered with strings and pad(+6db)
The problem is that the second or third patch is way louder than the first. I'm playing live in a band and it is very annoying to correct the main-output volume every time we play the second or third patch.
If I layer more sounds to it it obviously gets even more saturated and finally the audio even clips. Do you have to change the volumes(gain?) every time on each channel strip (by fader) if you layer (add) more channelstrips to it or do you change the output of the AU-instrument itself on the second or third channelstrip?

    Jilles wrote:
Thanks! Yes indeed the sounds that I add or layer with the first sound each has its own channel-strip.
Q1: So is it the best to leave each fader of each channelstrip at 0db? (Is this the gain?)
Each fader is a volume, or gain, control. Adjust these faders to get the correct balance between the channel strips. Once this has been done, you should not need to adjust this again.
Q2: Do you ever change the volume settings of the AU-instruments itself?
It depends on the type of music I am performing. If I am playing electronic music, I make adjustments all the time. I use my MIDI controller or the MIDI volume control from my guitar to change volumes. Also, I use my MIDI controller to change various settings on my synths; anything from wave shape to resonance, cut-off, ASDR etc.
Q3: The main volume of the mac, do you put it at 100%?
I start with the output volume set to silence and raise the volume to suit the venue. This could be anything between -18dB & +3dB. Usually, my out volume is set between -10dB & 0dB.
Remember, if you add extra instruments to your initial keyboard sound, you will increase the overall volume of that patch. If you wish to maintain the same output level for all the patches, you will have to lower the volumes of all the instruments in the patch by a small amount, probably 1.5 - 2.0 dB on each channel strip.
Once this has been done, you should not need to change any volumes when you change patches. You will have to spend some time getting the balance right. It will help the sound if each channel strip is panned to one side or the other. e.g. keyboard 0; strings -10; pad +10. The audience will hear each instrument more clearly that way, thus making them sound louder in the mix.
There are many solutions to your problem. I have given you a few that I have used successfully in the past.
    Good luck.

  • Vienna Multi Layered Sound Fonts

Some of the more sophisticated keyboards have weighted action that uses a different sampled sound for each range of velocity. That way you get the sound of a piano played softly as opposed to the sound of a piano played normally with the volumn turned down.
Is Vienna 2.4 capable of creating sound fonts which are organized in this way and respond to velocity by switching samples? If so, are there instructions some where as to how to build such a font?
Also are there any piano fonts out there for download that use this technique?

    Hi Joseph,
Not at this time, although if other layered libraries offer VST support, there is a method for inclusion in Soundbooth.  Generally, all of these custom, dynamic sound libraries are pretty segregated.
While Adobe's own offerings are limited to the 4 or 5 dozens scores, there is an SDK available that enables anyone to create their own Scores or Score libraries.  It's our hope that more third party score libraries start to become available, and our long-term goal is to make it simpler for our users to create their own dynamics scores from their own compositions or other pieces of music.  Ideally, I'd love to offer a tool where someone could import any piece of music, we could analyze it and split it into various compositional components, then allow a user to shuffle, extend, loop, or skip those pieces as they saw fit.  Right now, we're probably a bit away from that

  • My Animation stops for 1-2 frames when sound is used.

Hello, I'm making an animation on Macromedia Flash Professional 8.
I have 3 layers, Sound, BackGround, and Main.
When I play the animation, and it reaches the sound that is supposed to play, the animation
first freezes, then the sound plays and it happens again when it reaches the next sound, tho nothing gets out of sync.
Is there a way for me to send you guys the animation so you can find the problem?

You may want to ask in the Flash Pro forum.
This is likely caused by something in your Actionscript.

  • No sound after patch change

Hi, I was just about to programming patches for my live setup. I use a master keyboard with three foot switches - one for step forward through the patches - one for step backward - one for different functions. Until now I have programmed 14 patches - in most cases I use one patch for one song. But one song need two patches - one for different sounds and one patch for the solo. These both patches are organized in a set. The second patch have two layered sounds and a third sound wich is layered if I press and hold the third foot switch.
These switch controls the mute function of the third channel. If I press the foot switch, the channel is on and muted if I released these switch.
Now the situation: After I have ready the two patches I checked out this. I played the first patch released the keys - changed to the second patch - played the solo part - there is a little pause so I can press the foot switch to unmuted the third channel (it is muted in the base setting).
All is ok - the solo is over I released the switch and the keys and then I pressed the second foot switch to change to the previous patch and suddenly there was no sound.
And now these failure is at all times if I change from one patch to an other. And very curious - this problem concerns the exs sampler only. After I press the panic button all is ok. If I change the patch by the foot switch or the other possibilities again - no sound from exs sampler until I press the panic button again.
Have anyone an idea what is the reason for this failure?
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip... good to know. The weird part is that the only MIDI I'm using is the footswitch to change patches. As much as I love the interface of MS and the flexibility to use some Logic effects along with Guitar Rig, I can't see using MS live at this point. At best my guitar will drop out a few times as I switch patches, and then I can recover it with a footswitch pedal that I will have to dedicate to PANIC instead of triggering an effect or something else useful.
I really hope the stability of this app improves, it's so much nicer than using Guitar Rig's standalone app, but at least the GR standalone doesn't drop out randomly when switching patches.
I wonder if this is just a MIDI issue or something bigger within MS. I read a post on Logic Pro Help that said to try the following to deal with MIDI problems...
"My issue was Completely solved by tossing an EmaginUSBmidi driver.
    HD>Library>Audio>Midi Drivers."
I might give it a shot before I shelve MS until the next update.

  • Cycle / Loop Drops Notes when reaching end of loop

    Hi there!
Very annoying situation seems that when I first create a song, put a cycle/loop on four bars (cycle range) it goes round and round fine, no drop outs.
I picked up a song I did three days ago, changed nothing and it seems when it gets to end of 4th bar and goes back to first bar I get drops/pauses sending midi notes to my synth. As I have jam pack layeers in the song, if I mute the midi, I realise that the jam pack layers sound as they should do - it's just the midi that skips/drops.
If I take off the cycle range and loop the layers then there are no drops. Any ideas would be much ly appreciate, this is rather pain!!
    Many thanks,
    Philippe

I have had this happen sometimes. It depends on what "voice" your MIDI notes are playing. Some of them have things like reverb and echo on them that require the playhead to move beyond the region to output the sound. Sometimes you will only get the sound cut off too quickly.
If you move the cycle region beyond the end of the segment you should be able to hear the notes.

  • YouTube and "Matched third party content".

I have known for a few years that YouTube employs software that can detect videos containing audio from commercial CDs etc. but I didn't know how incredibly efficient it is.
I filmed a large theatrical event ten days ago and yesterday uploaded almost 2 hours of edited video in 9 parts.
Within seconds of the upload finishing, the  "Matched third party content"  message was appearing on 4 of the 9 videos.
It appears that the people organising the performance had used commercial music in those parts but in the others they were playing their own instruments.
Whether or not they have a licence to use the recordings I have yet to discover.
Generally speaking, YouTube allows you to use professional music in non-profit making videos but sticks adverts on them.
Regardless of whether YouTube permits it, the use of music from CDs etc. is illegal and if they wish, the copyright owners can sue you for large sums of money.
Frequently on the FCP X forum (and others) editors claim that because they have bought the recording they can use it in any way they wish.
This is totally incorrect and the purchase of a record usually only permits you to play it in your own home or in an iPod/car audio system type device when away from home.
The use in public halls and in videos (even for personal use) is forbidden.
Anyway, getting back to YouTube's copyright detection equipment, I am absolutely amazed at how it monitors every uploaded video and instantly flags up a violation even though the original recording may be somewhat distorted by having passed through a PA system and been picked up by a dodgy camcorder mic.

  • Imovie 09 stalling out while editing

Hi guys, My imovie is stalling for up to 15 seconds while I'm editing. Usually at an edit point, it will freeze frame and skip a section, and pick up many seconds later. I do not have it over loaded with projects or layers, sound effects, etc, it will just stall out and trip me up. Seems random. help.

  • Mainstage 2.2 Glitching without mem/cpu spikes

With my set up: iMac2008/4GB/3.06ghz/1TB/Lion + Edirol FA66, I'm getting a clicky-abrupt finish to notes with 3-4 note polyphony (about 50% of the time), making it largely useless (okay for mono synth I guess). Increasing latency doesn't help. Same instruments in Logic 9 are fine, as they were in the buggy Mainstage 1.  Problem persists using the internal soundcard, though I haven't tested an alternative midi interface yet.  CPU/Memory usage are all low.
    Any Ideas?

When you said D-50, that jogged my memory. See:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2223643?start=0&tstart=0
There's a workaround which is also described in that thread that you should be able to apply.
I have a Prophet 08 myself and I was able to create some external instrument channel strips to send midi clock back to the Prophet. Then I made some Prophet patches with the LFO synced to the tempo, and I was able to make some pretty cool layered sounds, along with UltraBeat playing in sync at the same time.

  • Is it possible to save separate bus settings for each patch?

Is it possible to save separate bus settings for each patch
From reading the manual I don’t think this is possible – but would be grateful for any help around this.
    2 examples:
    1. I play around with the delay settings on a bus and I then change patch for the next tune and e.g the feedback on the delay is wrong for the new track.
    2. Most of my patches are 2 layered sounds – which I have sent to a bus to put effects on – But I can’t save those effects settings on that bus on a patch by patch basis – If I change the settings on the effects on the bus all the patches are effected.
Hopefully Mainstage 3 when it emerges will address this issue – so you have the choice. Unless there is something I am missing.
    Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

  • IMovie Music on YouTube: "Matched third party content"

"Matched third party content"  keeps showing up on my uploaded videos. I thought the music/sounds on iMovie are Royalty Free?

  • How to save newly created patch?

As a follow up to an earlier question:
I was looking for a real specific sound that is on the Motif XS. I created a project with 4 tracks. I opened the environment window and highlighted all 4 tracks. I created a new layer. With the 4 tracks highlighted, I option clicked into my new layer which 'jumped' the 4 tracks into my new layer.
I created a new instrument object on the layer and cabled all 4 tracks to the instrument. I turned port off. Then I drug my instrument object to the arrange window on track 1. I deleted the other 3 tracks from the arrange window. This left me with a VERY close sounding patch to what I was originally after.
Now my question... how do I save the patch so that I can use it later in different projects?
    Hope I've made this clear.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Not as settings, patches or channel strips - they are only saving the status of one instrument/channel at a time. There is no way in Logic to save one patch or setting that encompasses multiple instruments.
Imagine you create a layered sound with a hardware DX7, D50 and Jupiter 8 in your studio - how do you save that? You have to save the patches you used individually on each instrument, then to recreate it, load each of the three patches up and layer the synths again - and it's the same way in Logic. You can save the layer configuration (ie the environment routings), and you can save the individual patches, but you can't easily save the whole state of those three instruments in one "patch".
If the instruments support program changes, as mentioned, then you can program in the program numbers into your instruments in the environment layer to recall a particular patch on each, but this depends on the instruments you are using.
Basically, the way I would do it would be to save the patches used to a Logic setting or channel strip preset, then when I wanted to use that layer, I'd call up each channel strip in turn "My Layer Patch - Layer #1", "My Layer Patch - Layer #2", "My Layer Patch - Layer #3", then shift-click the record enable buttons to get the layer.
It's not as immediate as having a more flexible, multi-instrument settings system, but that's the best we have in Logic for now, I'm afraid...

  • Mute single frame of audio

    Hi all,
I'm a novice Flash user so bare with me, i'm trying to mute a single layer of Audio when a button is clicked.
The idea being that some of the audio will continue to play throughout the Animation but when the button is clicked the main audio (backing music) will be muted/disabled.
So does anyone know some script to Disable a specific layer or mute a layers sound?
I'm working in a AIR for IOS document, using ActionScript 3 in Flash Pro CC.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

you cannot differentially control the sound on one layer vs the sound on another layer.  you could control the sounds in different movieclips, but it's easier to use the sound class to control your sounds and attach no sounds to timelines..

  • Seeking some environment help

Sorry to bother you all, and be so dumb about this, but I'm in over my head. I don't quite get the environment and how it relates to what I want to do. I'm reading that whole section in the manual, but I could sure use some guidance to get me further along the way.
Up to now, I've had one Midi keyboard that has shown up as a GM instrument (even tho it's a QS8...I guess I've never added it as an instrument). And, I have a motu Micro lite 5 in 5 out midi interface. I haven't had to do anything with the environment, since I could easily record tracks and discreetly assign them to each midi channel in the QS8's mix patch. I've never even looked at the environment window, since everything has been working fine...however, now.....
I have just now acquired another midi keyboard that I want to be the master. It does not have the multi midi channel capabilities of the QS8, only one midi channel in for it's piano samples, although you can set that to be 1 thru 16. (it's an Nord piano).
What I'd like to do is have the Nord trigger a patch in the QS8, as well as have it trigger it's own patch, thus achieving a layered sound that has piano and a pad behind it. That same basic configuration would continue to serve as a having the Nord trigger other sounds in a QS8 mix patch, responding to their own midi channel, as I continue to add track layers to the song.
So far, I can only get the Nord to, either, play it's own sound, or play a sound on the QS8, as I try all the optional port and channel settings. Oddly enough, I can get the QS8 to trigger it's sounds and the Nord, but that's definitely not how I need this to happen.
Under the Port setting I see off, all, QS8, micro lite port 2 thru 5. I have no idea how I got the micro lite's port 1 titled QS8, but there it is.
Anyway....would greatly appreciate some direction with this...I want to avoid messing up the set up I've been using for all my tunes so far, and not be able to return it to working........thanks

The Layered sound is easy, all you have to do is "record enable" the tracks you want layered. Logic will record on both tracks and play back the layered sounds.
    To add the Nord.
Go to the MIDI portion of the Environment, the same place that your GM Multi-instrument is located. Use the "NEW" drop down menu and select New Instrument. Since Nord is a basically a single channel instrument you don't need to create a Multi-instrument. You also don't need to worry about changing output channels on the Nord as Logic will re-channel incoming data.
Use the text tool to rename the new instrument..  Nord Piano or whatever.
In the instrument inspector on the left select the MIDI Port you're going to be using and also the channel you have the Nord set to receive on.
Back in the Arrange Window, select Create New Track/External MIDI, check "Open Library" when the library window open Select Nord.
At this point, to record the Nord Piano without doubling the notes you can either set "Local Off" on the Nord OR... go to Settings/MIDI and select the NORD under "Instrument Without MIDI Thru Function".
Settings are on a Per Song basis.

  • Captivate 4 can't publish or preview files/sound layers appear black

After re-installing Captivate 4, I was unable to preview or publish files.  Additionally, my sound layers appeared as black, empty layers.
I had a difficult time finding a solution, so I wanted to post it here in case somebody else has the same problem.
I was indicating in my searches that I was unable to publish or preview files in C4 and could not find a solution, then I switched the focus of my searches to the audio layers and that's when I found a solution at: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/03/adobe_captivate_4_installation.html
Now, I have to say this for anyone who may not be aware.  You should always back up your registry anytime you make changes to it and that changes to the registry can cause problems.  Having said that, here is the fix I used:.
Adobe Captivate 4 Installation Issues on Microsoft Windows XP
You can use SubInAcl tool from Microsoft to try fixing the permission issues in the Windows Registry.
Close all instances of Adobe Captivate and do the following steps -
    1) Download the SubInAcl tool from Microsoft Download Center and install it.
    2) Download this zip file
    3) Extract the zip file in a temporary folder. You will get two files - restoreRegPermCP4.bat, restoreCP4regentries.bat
    4) Copy the restoreRegPermCP4.bat to the folder which has SubInAcl.exe installed. Typically this would be at C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\.
    5) Double click to run the restoreRegPermCP4.bat file.
    6) Copy the restoreCP4regentries.bat to the folder in which Captivate 4 is installed. Typically it is at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4
    7) Open command prompt and navigate to that folder.
    8) Type restoreCP4regentries.bat and press enter.
    9) Make sure that all the messages that popup say "DllRegisterServer in 'some dll name' Succeeded"
This should have fixed the registry issues and things should work fine.
I hope this saves someone hours of searching for a solution.

So glad it helped you!  I know what you mean about Adobe.
