Layers feature and a layer mask pen tool

Could we see a simple Layers feature and a layer mask pen tool - so that we don't have to go to photoshop for simple cutout etc.

Theres some basic stuff you are not understanding…
1. In Photoshop there is the pen tool for creating abstract vector edges, and selection tools (lasso, magic wand etc). You need to turn the results of the pen tool into a selection. Best way is using the the Command/return shortcut, or command clicking on the path in the paths panel.
2 layers need to be , not - If you want to delete areas (make them transparent). To do this either go to Layer/New/Layer from background - or hold Option and double click the Background layer.
3 See answer 2, and use Free Transform (command T)

  • How copy a layer and its layer mask to another image?

Using PSE9, how can a copy a layer and its layer mask to another image?
The on-line help contains a topic on how to copy a layer but trying the different methods in the help topic results in either nothing being copied or just the layer without its layer mask being copied.  Thanks.

How are you copying?  If you float your images, so they are both partially visible in the work area, make the one with the to be copied layer active.  Then drag the layer from the layers palette onto the other image.  Now you should have both the layer and the mask on the second image.

How do I turn off the alt scroll zoom?
When I'm in Adobe photoshop and illustrator using the pen tool, alt is utilized for another short cut.  I would like to use the alt command for the pen tool instead of zooming into the screen.

I tend to select things from left to right and every time I am moving in a downward right diagonal motion during lasso selection I am missing a clear view and I am tending to have a more sloppy selection.  All this does is slow me down since I need to go back and hit those areas again.  The big arrowhead just get's in the way.  The original lasso tool with the thin line and small active point at it's lower left was far better for me.
I don't like turning the cursors to precise because I like to see the active tool icon where my cursor is and as the icon changes as I hold modifier keys down.  If I am forced to get comfortable with using pricise cursors I guess I will, but man, I've never had to do this in my 15 years of photoshop use...
I would absolutely LOVE to find a way to get the old lasso icon -- without the arrowhead above it.
Is there any chance this option could be inlcuded in cursor preferences?  I'd give much thanks, Adobe.

  • Copy and paste layer mask into another layer mask

I know there is a way to do this.
How can I copy and paste on layer mask into another.
I need to use the same mask for multiple layers and images.
    Thanks

In the same document, click on the layer mask, option drag to a new layer
To copy mask to a different document with both documents open, select the layer, Duplicate Layer to the other document (destination). Then in the other document, option drag the mask to whatever layer you want, delete the layer you duplicated (you don't need it anymore, you just needed the mask)
Or to copy mask to a different document with both documents open, load mask as a selection. Save selection to the other document (destination). Then in the other document load the new alpha channel and apply as a layer mask. Delete the alpha, you don't need it anymore.
Edit: J always beats me to it

  • Cut and pasting object with pen tool

I have a photo in which I outlined something with the pen tool and have selected it, but when I paste it to a new background, it is still surrounded by a white square, how can I paste just the shape? Sorry kind of new :/

Could you post a screenshot of the Layers Panel of the receiving document after pasting (with the camera-icon)?
Because I’m not sure about your »new background«.
By the way Command-clicking would save you one menu-selection.

  • Layer palette issue. I choose a layer and when I use move tool on that layer PSCC jumps to another layer

I am Using Photoshop CC 14.2.1x32. When I choose a layer in the layers palette and then use the move tool to re-position an element on that layer, PS forces a jump to another layer. The only way I can re-position is by using free transform on the layer I want to work on. What is happening with PS CC? Please help. About to dump CC and go back to CS 6

You might have been able to change the Auto Select option from the default Group to the usually more user friendly Layer.  It's one heck of a useful feature, so get used to using it if you can.  For instance, if you have a lot of layers, it can make it a lot easier just to find a particular layer in the layers panel.

  • Problem with pen tool, lines and blend tool

    I draw line 1.
Then I break (click the arrow key and then click the pen tool again) and draw line 2
When I finish there is a puzzling gap on line 1 after where line 2 intersects:
Then when I use the blend too the resulting abstract looks like - non-continguous with broken lines:
instead of something of a continuous wave and unbroken lines like:
To me, the problem is clearly the gap show up but I don't understand why it is appearing, when as picture 2 shows, I clearly I'm drawing complete lines.

Thanks. That fixed it. I was able to select no fill in the pen tool bar (when pen tool is active), but could not select no fill when I clicked on the fill box in the regular tool bar (unless there is a trick) - all that comes up are color gradients to select.

  • What are Layers? And why do I need them?

WHAT ARE LAYERS? AND WHY DO I NEED THEM?
Layers are an essential part of Photoshop. With Layers you can separate pictures or design elements from each other, as if they are stacked on pieces of glass. With all elements separate, you can move or change them independent of each other.
Layers are used for many tasks, including improving your images' color or tone; merging two or more images in one Photoshop file; and creating Web designs and animations.

After creating the mask and applying adjustment, you can also adjust and change layer mask using selection tools or, the most common way, using brush tools.
To have a more accurate preview of what are you doing, Alt + click on the layer mask thumbnail to show the mask in the image area.
At this point, you will have a layer mask on your screen in large view, so it is easy to fine tune it, but you wont see how that affects your image.
To seean  instant preview how changes on layer mask affects the adjustments, use New Window for (name of your image) from Window > Arrange.

  • How to draw 2 seperate lines w/Pen tool?

Hello:                                                                                     Level: New Newbie  OS: Windows 7 64bit
    It's me again w/the same tut at: http://designinstruct.com/drawing-illustration/how-to-make-a-golden-compass-in-illustrator /
Thank you everyone for all your help thus far!!
Please refer to step #8 and the picture below
Where I am confused is that once the line is drawn from top to bottom and I go to draw the line across the upper area the anchors stay connected.
I tried the Alt key + click to cut the path but (as you advanced folk probably already know) it didn't work.
So, I searched the manual, forums and other places for a way to make the bottom Anchor an end Anchor ... ?? Does that even exist?
I don't know if I am explaining this correctly or well enough but I sure would appreciate your guidence
Honestly I am not even sure what I ought to be looking for in the manual etc.
I tried just drawing the shape for the Glossy effect and then filling it with the required gradient but frankly it just looks odd ... it looks flat and basically UGLY
Below is a picture of what I need help accomplishing. The blue line that goes across is the problem for me.
I should also mention, if you go to the tutorial ... it says that I am suppose to Duplicate the Inner Circle but I made too many goofs and somehow all my layers ended up on one layer so rather than doing what the tut instructs I just made a New Layer and then drew a new circle with the Ellipse tool.
Even so, I actually couldn't grasp why or how I was suppose to go about intergrating the new circle with using the Pen Tool to draw the Glossy effect object. So, I skipped that part and just used the Pen tool to draw the needed shape as shown above in pink.
    Thank you again!!
    wow ...

    Kara,
Or just press the P key.
This will reselect the Pen Tool, implying a deselection.
Edit: And now I realized: In the other thread I never looked at anything but the actual question, so I was unaware that it was all about a compass.
There are a few things in the tutorial that could create inaccuracies, and some might be done in easier ways, but differeent users prefer different ways. That is one of the reasons for the pleasant great variation in suggestions here.

  • I can't get Layer Masks to work with PScc but works fine with CS6

When I create a layer mask it shows up properly but doesn't work at all.  I have the correct layer selected and I'm painting in black (and nothing happens in white either) and there is no problem when doing exactly the same thing with CS6 so I thought there might be a difference in my settings but I can't see any.  My masks are NOT disabled in properties.  Nothing shows up on the image nor on the mask.  I can however, use the eraser tool as normal.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!

PLease could you help me too.  I have been onto support through several emails and online helps and they do not understand the problem correctly and have not resolved it.  I have photoshopcc 2014.  If I click on add layer mask icon I get a white thumbnail.  That seems ok.  I then select a brush - set to normal etc.  all ok.  Then I attempt to either brush in or out on my photo to reveal or hide bits of layer below and it no longer works.
Weirdly, I noticed it was not selected in channels.  So I checked the layer mask in channels and then back in layers it works except now it works by painting on a rubylith (which it did not do before 2014 version) then when I am done if I click apply mask everything works ok and it is done.  It just does not work unless I select in channels.
This also happens if I apply an adjustment layer.  The adjustment comes into the thumbnails with a mask and the mask is unselected in channels, I have to select and it paints a ruby lith.
If I go to layers in the menu however and select layer mask hide all or reveal all then select my brush it works fine and as it normally did before.
I have tried re installing etc. and every bit of normal advice but nothing works.  Can you help or do you know anyone who can.  As I am desperate here is my email: [email protected]
    thank you

  • Using the Pen Tool As a Guide?

Is there a way to use the Freedom Pen Tool as a guide? I used the 'Auto Blend Layers' and there a few misalignments. So I am using the Freedom Pen Tool to outline where the blend was made. After I correct the misalignments, I want to get rid of the Pen Tool outline. I tried putting the pen tool on its own layer but when I deleted the layer, the pen tool marking was still there. Is there any way to get rid of the pen marking after fixing the misalignments?
    Thanks,
    Lou

Delete it from the Paths panel.

  • Non-destructive layer mask editing?

I just finished sweetening a mult-layered texture I was creating and suddenly had a thought - I create my texture in overlaid layers so that I can endlessly tweak, and my process is non destructive, but when I create layer masks for each layer, those have to be edited destructively... so I dupe layers in case I decide I want to go back. This makes for lots of extra backup layers.
So - is there some clever way of non-destructively editing a layer mask? It sounds kinda crazy, but would be super cool if there was a feature to have nested layers just for my layer mask.

Well, you could save as alphas, but then you are still doing destructive edits and archiving them. Only now, they are removed from the layers palette, and it would be easier to forget what goes where. If I leave the copies in the layers palette and turn them off, at least I can group in folders or something - I have a clearer picture of what goes with what.

  • Photoshop CS6 Pen tool ( Clipping Path )

Hello all  what is new feature adding photoshop CS6 for Pen tool anybody know ?

There are many ways to mask and many ways to create mask.  When something you want to mask has a well defined shape it edges are made of straight and curved line segments then the pen tool is the best tool for selecting that object.  Masking is all about making good selections.  You would not use the pen tool to select/isolate a person with hair that is flowing in the wind.  I do not know if anything new was added to the pen tool in CS6. You can look up what was added to photoshop in each release on the web adobe and other sites have that information available.

  • MAGNETIC PEN TOOL, AUTO DELETE ANCHOR POINT.

MAGNETIC PEN TOOL, AUTO DELETE ANCHOR POINT.
How would you like the feature to work?
like pen tool in AI, when clicking out around shape and creating anchor points, ability to hover over previous anchors and click on them to delete them,
also right click to automatically delete most recent path created , and ability for consecutive right clicks to keep deleting previous segments of anchor and path.
Why is this feature important to you?
easier editability on the fly with the magnetic pen tool..

Many people seem to confuse joining with averaging. Like Ray says, only endpoints can be joined. In your case you don't need to join the points. Select the points you want to have in the same position and Cmd-alt-J, Both, and all the points will hop to the average position.
Alternatively you can snap an endpoint to an anchor point. Put your cursor on the selected endpoint that you want to move and drag it till it snaps onto the anchor point you're aiming at.

  • Pen tool - turn off SNAP-TO points

Hello -- I'm running Illustrator CS3 on a Mac Powerbook. Somehow I've got some sort of "snap-to" feature turned on for the PEN TOOL, and I can't figure out where to tun it OFF.
It's the constraint aspect that is unwanted (the symptoms are: the cursor constantly displays "tool tip" info about all sorts of existing nearby anchor points, various constraint angles, etc -- which is OK as info, but it also keeps snapping to these points in the image when I create a new anchor point, rather than letting me just click wherever I want).
I want to reset to the DEFAULT behavior for creating arbitrary anchor points. This forced "snap-to" business is driving me nuts -- and I can't find where to turn this feature OFF. Someone point me in the right direction please.
    Thanks -- Robin

Thanks -- good info from both Kurt and Wade -- I appreciate the help. I suspected that there was some menu item for this (probably "hidden in plain sight"), but I just couldn't find it.
Adobe HELP didn't seem to have this topic for the keyword "pen tool", which also surprised me.
I bet the SMART GUIDES are very helpful under certain circumstances -- but they were creating huge problems for what I was doing.
    Thanks again -- Robin
