Layers in CS4 - PDF?

Hi All,
Weird thing... When we used Illustartor CS3, we could save a file as a PDF file, and retain all of the layers. Now, with CS4, when we save it as a PDF file, the layers are flattened. This is not good for us as we use an Onyx RIP that seems more comfortable with PDF files than AI files, so we save all of our files as PDF files, but we need them to retain their layers! This worked fine in CS3... We save 10-20 files a day and are forced to keep using CS3 on one computer until this is fixed.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,
Evan

Hi Wade,
Sorry, was off of this project for a while but am now back to it.
I think I may hav egiven the wrong impression. I'm not worried about opening the PDF file in Acrobat. What we do is save the file as a PDF so that our RIP (Onyx ProductionHouse) can utilize it, but then we need to be able to open it back up in Illustrator and edit it. When I do that, the layers are combined into one layer, whether or not "Create Acrobat Layers from Top-Level Layers" is checked or not.
In CS3, this worked fine... we could save a file with four layers as a PDF file, then open the PDF file back up in Illustrator and all of the layers were still intact. It's just in CS4 that this has stopped working.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks again,
Evan

  • MULTIPLE place image import...& "save as.." multiple layers to multipage PDF

    Hello,
just some suggestions I`d like to see to speed up my set up and output..
i`d like to import multiple placed images into illustrator CS4. So open dialogue box place, and multiple select images for placing.
    regards output save as...
Can we output multiple layers  into a single PDF in illustrator?  Or multiple layers into single JPEGS  from illustrator with one command instead of individually saving out  each layer... would be a huge time saver for me.I create different artworks on different layers..
Currently  I output each completed layer individually and then right click those  outputted jpegs in their output folder and choose "combine supported  files into acrobat..." to make a single acrobat file..i`d like to do this right in the illustrator "save for PDF" dialogue box. Adding  something in the Save for PDF output dialogue box to save layers to one PDF as multiple pages would be a helpful time saver..
I`d  also like to be able to CTRL click multiple layers and go " save as..."  only those layers get saved out...

, bridge -FILE/PLACE into ai, goes to separate layers in AI as placed.
in PS, bridge/tools/ps/load files into ps layers.. CS4.
just using right click in explorer on individual PDF docs from layers saved from PS to combine to PDF. but cannot output multiple pds from layers in AI in CS4.

Why Does Premiere Pro CS4 Import Only 10 Seconds Of Layered Photoshop CS4 .psd??
I have a 24 second clip I layered in Ps and when I import the psd into Pr THE SEQUENCE IS ALWAYS ONLY 10 SECONDS!
How can I change this?  Why does this happen?  I really need to know as soon as possible.  I have a video project due this Wednesday (granted it's for an AV class where I'm just learning Pr.  But I can learn VERY FAST!)
    Thanks for your help.

Just in case I wasn't clear in my last line "just Click-drag on the Tail of your .PSD to set the desired Duration," once you have Imported your .PSD (as Footage), just drag it to the Timeline, Click-drag on the right-hand margin (the Tail) and stretch out its Duration, as is required.
Now, if you Imported as a Sequence, open that Sequence's Timeline, and do the same.
I normally will set my Edit>Preferences>Still Duration to about what I think will be applicable, do my Import, and then with the Info Panel handy, just alter the Duration to suit.
    Good luck,

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Why can't I see the layers of cs4 .psd files passed to me in photoshop elements 11?

why can't I see the layers from cs4 .psd files passed to me in photoshop elements 11?

You should be able to see normal layers, but PSE doesn't understand layer groups/sets or comp layers. The inexpensive add-on elements+ from simplephotoshop.com will let you expand layer groups. (If you also have Premiere Elements installed you should be able to see layer groups in PSE without adding anything.)

  • Layers in my PDF which are switched to visible are not showing - how do I solve this?

I am creating MXD files in Arc GIS, and then exporting them to Adobe Professional 8. I am merging layers within Adobe Pro, and then switching the initial view so that only 4 out of the ~10 layers are visible when the PDF is first opened. However, on opening the PDF, layers which are set to be visible (the eye symbol is appearing next to them) are not visible. This is only happening for some layers, in some of the PDFs. Also, as I switch on more layers in the PDF then the layer which should have been visible but was not does eventually appear. I would be very grateful for any suggestions on why this is happening / how to solve it. Thanks.

I'm not sure if this setting exists in version 8, but check to see if Allow Layer State To Be Set By User Information is selected in the Documents Preferences. If it is not selected, Layer Properties dialog box settings, other than Layer Name and Default State, are ignored.

  • Script - Export Layers to Individual PDF's?

Is there a script to export each InDesign layer to its own PDF? I posted about this in the general InDesign forum, and was referred here. Someone found a Mac version, but I need something for Windows XP, CS3. Thank you!

    Hi,
    telling a story:
hide all layers, start loop in all of them, show one by one, export doc
    writing a script:
    myDoc = app.documents[0];
    myFolder = myDoc.filePath + "/";                              // assuming doc isn't untitled
    myDoc.layers.everyItem().visible = false;
    for (k=0; k<myDoc.layers.length; k++) {
         file = new File(myFolder + myDoc.name + "_" + myDoc.layers[k].name + ",pdf");
         myDoc.layers[k].visible = true;
doc.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, file, false, app.pdfExportPresets[0]);         // choose preset id
         myDoc.layers[k].visible = false;
    myDoc.layers.everyItem().visible = true;
pdfs should be in doc folder,
    hope...

  • Problems with Layers in CS4

I have Dreamweaver CS4 setup on a new Win XP Pro computer
    with 1gb of memory.
I was setting up a webpage that would act like a manual
photogallery. The user by clicking on one image could change to the
    next image.
Everything was done using AP Div and hiding all the layers
except the first one. This all went well until I tried do two
    things.
The first was to Create a Class for the layers called "Hand",
so that when the user moved the cursor over the layer(or image),it
would turn into the hand icon.
Normally I would done this by:
Open the page with the layers, then in code view, put the
cursor on any layer name. In the Property Selector, in the Class
Box choose "Manage Styles". From here I could create a Class named
Hand and apply it to all the layers.
In CS4 this is NOT an option and I need to know how to get to
the option called "Manage Styles". Another option (general) is how
to create a New Class for layers in CS4.
The second problem, was with Behaviors. To change images, I
used "Show-Hide Elements" with trigger being "onClick". That did
    NOT work.
That not working, I switched to the trigger "onDblClick".
This did work. Is this a glich in CS4 or something I can fix? I see
this as a minor thing and was just wondering.
BTW Adobe did a nice job grouping the CSS Styles, AP Elements
and Tag Inspector Panels. Saves space and is very nice way to set
    it up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If needed sample pages can be put on the web to see the
    code.

Out of the block this means that you are improperly applying
    the behavior
directly to the <img> tag rather than to an anchor tag
    - <a> - surrounding
an image. All behaviors should be applied to anchor tags
    (usually). To fix
this, select the image, and in the BEHAVIORS panel, change
    the onclick event
to <A> onclick. That will have the effect of wrapping
    the image with an
anchor, and at the same time, moving the behavior call to
    that anchor. Do
this for each such image. To change the event, click on the
    onclick event
in the event column, and then select the dark arrow to drop a
    list of
choices. Now you will not need the custom CSS class, as links
    on an anchor
always get the correct pointer by default.

    images, I used

    work.
It should. If you select each individual image's anchor (or
    apply the
behavior first, and use the event change I described above)
    you should be
    fine.

  • Saving non-layered file as PDF

Why is it that when I save a file that has many, many layers to a PDF without layers as a copy that the file size is larger than flattening the layers and then saving the file as a copy to PDF? 19Mb vs. 5Mb?? Wouldn't saving a file without layers be the same as flattening the layers and then saving the file?? Can anyone explain this?

Wouldn't saving a file without layers be the same as flattening the layers and then saving the file??
No. that's simply not how it works. PDFs are "object"-centric, meaning even without layers there can be separate entities in a document and PS will try to obey that if and when possible based on what PDF settings you use - vector smart objects may come in separate, text may be editable, layers that have vector masks may come in at full size and so on...

  • Photoshop CS4 - Layers Missing in PDF Export

    Hi there,
I'm working on a leaflet design for a client in Photoshop CS4 and am having a real issue with the PDF export. There are three layer groups all containing the same graphics, but when I export these to PDF - whether compressed or uncompressed and I've tried Reader 5 - 8 compatibility and with varying settings the layers do not appear in the PDF.
They are visible as plain as day in Photoshop, but don't appear at all in the PDF.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated,
    Many thanks,

Thanks for your answer :-) I will try the gradually merging option first. I did flatten it but lost a LOT of quality in the PDF, which is not great when this has to go to the printer's.
My image doesn't have clipping paths (probably hard to believe) but does have an epic number of layers. Here are the offending layers - nothing complex at all. The layers that don't appear, simply are the three squares which are in the 'Logo Squares' layer group.
If this enlightens you at all please let me know and I'll get back to you again. Thanks for posting!

  • InDesign CS4 PDF Export Issue

    Hello everyone,
I'm new to Adobe and this forum so if I screw something up, please let me know.
    My System:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93GHz, 3GB Ram, 7200rmp 320GB HDD, XP Pro SP3
Adobe Master Collection CS4 full installation.
    My Issue:
Intermittenly, as I export an InDesign document to PDF my font gets rendered improperly.  I have included screen shots of both exports below:
Above is the correct way the font I use should look when it's exported (Grotesque MT Std Light).
Below is the other way the font looks when I export it.
You can clearly see that the bottom block of text is darker and more jagged, almost as if there are two layers of the same text.
The problem is I only have one layer of text!
I imagine there must be some checkbox somewhere that I either accidentally check/uncheck with a mistype (I type fast and irratically, so sometimes I hit keys I didn't mean to) or accidental combination of CTRL+.
Has anyone else experienced font-weight issues like I have?
I would appreciate any insight regarding this matter.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Transparency on the page? Looks like the type was perhaps rasterized during transparency flattening.
Rule #1 is to put type at the top of the stack when there is transparency, and it's a good idea not to flatten (export to Acrobat 5 or higher compatibility if possible) if it isn't absolutely necessary. Even if you move the type to the top you are likely to see an "emboldening" effect on screen and low res printing when there is transparency on the page.

  • Missing layers in CS5 pdf export :((

    Hello,
trying to export a document with 20 pages with 2 page  templates ("Mustervorlage") and 2 layers as PDF (interactive and not  interactive).
In some pages the objects of the  background layer are missing. Exporting only one of these pages the  background objects are exported, too.
But why? In InDesign CS4 (both windows) I did not have this frustrating behaviour.
    Carlos

That makes sense. I had a colorist that works with one of our vendor pre
-press houses set us up. We calibrated to our vendors machines so that we could share files when necessary. Their recommendation was the distiller workflow. Even setting the profile in the export to pdf option in ID caused it to be a bit different than doing it the long way. That may have changed since this was a couple of years ago, but I've just continued to do it that way.

  • Illustrator CS4 .pdf files - two issues

Issue 1: In Bridge I cannot open an .ai or .pdf file in Illustrator by clicking a thumbnail. Is 'drag and drop' into Illustator from Bridge the sole method? (apart from not using Bridge).
Issue 2: After exporting an .ai file to .pdf (Acrobat Pro CS4) a 'File Association' alert is shown. In previous versions of Illustrator the newly created .pdf file would open up in Acrobat for review/email forwarding etc when the 'preview in Acrobat' was selected... I am confused about the correct settings in the File Associations Panel in Bridge (Edit/Preferences/File Handling) under Illustrator it shows Illustrator and in the drop down InDesign and two other programmes I do not use. If someone can advise me how to add Acrobat to that drop-down I would be most grateful.
    Peter Ward

Don't think it could be corrupt preferences. I've tried trashing the prefs as well as reinstalling CS4.
I've noticed that it has something to do with an object that has a stroke. If I create a new box without a stroke then then my initial measurements are correct. However if I add a stroke my measures change according to the stroke weight. I've looked for ways to turn this off, but can not seem to find anything. I think this problem has something to do with the over all appearance of things.
Which lead me to another issues I'm having.... What happened to the "Filter" menu? When I try to round corners on a rectangle it applies the round corners as an effect "appearance". I have to expand the appearance in order to the corners to actually be rounded. Why did this change? I want to change the actual object the first time I create it and not take extra steps. This can waste a lot of time. I think this same issue is what is going on with the stroke weight. I don't want my object size to increase when I increase my stroke weight. If I did want this, I would create outlines. Can this be turned off? If not, I will have to continue using CS3 until Adobe fixes this problem.

  • Photoshop/Bridge CS4 PDF Presentation Update or Plug-in

Full Parameter PDF Presentation is essential for me.
PDF Presentation (as in Photoshop - Bridge CS2 and CS3) with panels for selection of presentation prameters and saving with various levels of jpeg compression and image quality, presets and output color conversion, etc. . This was not only a very useful feature, but has become a required component of my workflow over the past three years. This to shoot all imaages in RAW, upload files to Bridge, develop a wide range of selected images with Camera RAW and then produce a PDF slide show of 20-25 'proofs' while still in Bridge with a size of 10-15MB that can be emailed to various recipients for review and final selection. Final selections are then fine truned in Photoshop for printing. While some of the improvements in CS4 are useful, CS3 at present is more satisfactory and remains more useful than the CS4 upgrade. Addition of this feature as an update or legacy plug-in (the basic componets exist in CS4) would be more than acceoptable and allow me to complete the upgrade to CS4. Your attention and help will be very much appreciaated!

    APOLOGIES!!!
    I just found it......
Using the Adobe Output Module script, you can create Adobe PDF contact sheets and presentations in Adobe Bridge. Contact sheets let you easily preview and catalog groups of images by displaying a series of thumbnails on a single page. PDF presentations let you use a variety of images to create a multipage document for slide show presentation. You can set options for image quality in the PDF, specify security settings, and set the document to open automatically in full-screen mode in Adobe Acrobat. You can also add the filename as a text overlay below each image in the PDF.
    1. Select the files or the collection or folder that contains the images you want to include in the contact sheet or presentation.
    2. Choose Window > Workspace > Output.
If the Output workspace is not listed, select Adobe Output Module in Startup Scripts preferences.
Adobe Bridge displays the Output panel at the right side of the window and the Folders panel at the left. The Content panel with your selected photos appears at the bottom of the window, and the Preview panel appears in the middle.
    3. In the Output panel, select PDF.
    4. Choose a layout option from the Template menu.
    5. With your photos selected in the Content panel, click Refresh Preview to view the contact sheet in the Output Preview panel.
Note: The Output Preview panel displays only one PDF page.
    6. Customize the appearance of the contact sheet by specifying options in the Document, Layout, Overlays, and Watermark areas of the Output panel.
    7. (Optional) Change the images in the PDF by navigating to them in the Folders or Favorites panel, and then selecting them in the Content panel. You can also use the Preview panel to preview the images and refine your selection. Drag thumbnails in the Content panel to rearrange the order of the images on the page.
    8. Click Refresh Preview at any time to update the PDF and see the changes in the Output Preview panel.
    9. For presentations, specify the following options in the Playback panel:
    Open In Full Screen Mode
Opens the PDF in full-screen mode in Adobe Acrobat.
    Advance Every [x] Seconds
Specifies how long each image is displayed before the presentation advances to the next image. The default duration is 5 seconds.
    Loop After Last Page
Specifies that the presentation automatically starts over after reaching the end. Deselect this option to stop the presentation after the final image is displayed.
    Transition
Specifies the transition when moving from one image to the next. Choose a transition from the Transition menu. Depending on the transition, you can also specify a Direction and a Speed.
    10. If youd like to automatically open the PDF in Acrobat after you save it, select View PDF After Save at the bottom of the Output panel. Otherwise, just click Save.
    11. In the Save (Windows) or Save As (Mac OS) dialog box, enter a name for the PDF, select a destination for the saved file, and then click Save.

  • Bridge CS4 - pdf scrambled previews on pages after page 1

I have a set of pdf files from InDesign that have multiple pages. On these files, the first page displays fine, but on subsequent pages the preview is scrambled and I detect some overall display glitchiness while Bridge is showing me a scrambled preview.
I understand Adobe's hooking into OpenGL hardware acceleration, so I checked preferences in Bridge CS4 for acceleration settings. I checked the "use software rendering" option in the Advanced settings, restarted Bridge and the problem disappears.
I'm running an ATI FireGL 3400 card with the latest driver on an XP Pro machine. Not all multiple page pdfs show the problem. The files with the scrambled previews are banner layouts and several letter size page layouts display multiple page previews normally. I'd be happy to provide Adobe support with a file (under 2MB) for testing. So far Photoshop appears to be happy with OpenGL acceleration enabled - except that I get messages that I don't have enough ram to run more than two image windows accelerated with my hardware.

I don't have CS4 but in CS3 I could get the same results as "use software rendering" as when I clicked on "restore down" (middle symbol in upper rt corner of windows screen) even though I enlarged the window to full screen.
In maximize window mode I had several problems with the preview without software rendering, and knew my video card was weak point. I know this is not the same issue but does not cost anything to try it. Don't know why it worked either.
