Layers in dreamweaver

I've recently had some training in Dreamweaver MX (OCN level
1) on a PC, but I have a Mac and the CS3 version of Dreamweaver at
home. The tutor taught concerning "Layers" (sited in the Common tab
of the Insert toolbar), however, I can't find "Layers" any where in
the CS3 version. Can anyone advise please? Does this function now
have another name? I've stated to design my website using layers in
the old college version and now I'm not sure how to continue with
it on the Mac!

Hello,
"Layers" was an older DW term for AP Divs. In CS3, they are
called AP Divs.
Before building a layout using AP Divs, please read the links
below.
It will save you a lot of frustration.
Search this forum for "Layers" to see many posts from people
who ended up
rebuilding their pages after running into the problems AP
Divs cause. A very
common piece if advice here is "don't use layers to design a
site":
Short and sweet:

  • How to remove or change layers in Dreamweaver CS5 made in 2004

Can somebody please explain to me how we can change the layers and remove the pictures from a website that was made with Dreamweaver 2004.
Now we have CS5 and we don't know where we can find the tools to do this. I cannot find the layer ID.
    Please help!

We had an old version of Dreamweaver (DW-MX) in which I have found the layer. It apears to be an image made in Photoshop.
The way I solved the problem now is that I deleted the layer in DW-MX and made a new background image. I am no pro, just an amateur
Anyway, thank you very much for your fast reply and the offer to help me out this problem.

  • How to add layers in Dreamweaver CS5

I am using Dreamweaver CS5 for the first time and cannot find a way to insert layers. One comment I ran across on the internet suggested that layers are a thing of the past. If this is so, can someone please suggest another way to achieve the same result? I need to add resizable, movable text boxes on top of a full-page background image. How do I do this without layers? Thanks!

Layers produced such horrible code, Adobe saw fit to remove them from CS3.  Good riddance to layers!
For best results, find a pre-built CSS layout that has been tested to perform well in all browsers.  Depending on your needs, you could begin with a basic 1, 2 or 3-column layout.   Then it's a fairly simple matter of inserting elements where needed.

  • Menu and layers in dreamweaver

I am using dream weaver and updating my website. I am a
designer and my programing skills are limited. I mainly use layers.
I have a menu of vertically stacked links. When you click on one of
these links I want small thumbnails to appear under it. Therefore,
the other links below the one clicked on need to be pushed down
when the small thumbnails appear. Is there a way to make it so that
when my layer of thumbnails becomes visible it pushes the other
links down. I know I have seen other menus like this I just have no
idea how to go about it. I know I could just have the other links
become invisible and have new links that appear the same become
visible with the hide show layers, but there must be a simpler way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    > I mainly use layers
This is a bad thing. Using absolute positioning as a primary
    layout tool
can get you into all kinds of trouble. Here's an example -
    http://www.great-web-sights.com/g_layer-overlap.asp
The alternative would be to use tables, or spend some time to
    learn more
    contemporary techniques -

One way would be to use DW's Spry Accordion Panels. But there

When I insert my Fireworks HTML it is creating a separate

With CSS absolute positioning.  Also be sure to apply position:relative to your parent container or #wrapper div.
    #wrapper {
    width: 90%;
    position:relative;
    #Layer1,
    #Layer2,
    #Layer3,
    #Layer4 {
    width: xxpx; /*your widest image*/
    height:xxpx; /your tallest image*/

  • HTML Slice causes jumble on page in dreamweaver

So in fireworks I have a header on top, and navbar on the
left. The whole center of the page is white with a large HTML
Slice. As soon as I enter text on the html slice in dreamweaver
everything gets all distorted. I am using 1 pixel transparent
spacer in my html setup in fireworks. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Also if I am not clear I can put up some screenshots.
    Thanks!

OK what I really need is your FW PNG file, not screen shots.
    The grabs
are helpful but there is no way to experiment or play with
    the file. If
you prefer not to post it live to your site, then please
    email me off
    list with it.
As for the increase font size, as you make the text bigger in
    the
browser, it's going to spill out of your faux container
    borders,
    noticeable at the bottom.
I would also add that this is a REALLY long page. Nice use of
    named
    anchors but still pretty long.
Fireworks is "not sufficient" because it is not a web page
    creation
tool; it's a graphics editor and comping tool. Make your
    graphics in FW
and create your final page layouts in DW or another suitable
    program.

  • Working in layers

Can you work in layers in Dreamweaver? And if you can can you
make an element or slice at the top of the page remain always at
the top of the page with other content appearing to slide up behind
    it using a nav bar?
What I want to achieve is a web shop with very simple
commands - a single slector bar, plus an up and down Nav bar. The
sliding (rear) page contains up to 20 pictures and text of products
    linked to Paypal.
This way the shop's branding always appears on screen while
the products slide up and down behind it!

    > Can you work in layers in Dreamweaver?
Well, depending on what you mean by "work", yes.

Not easily, and not reliably without using javascript to whip
    older (i.e.,
    IE6 and earlier) into shape.

It's not an effect I would cherish, but if you must, just use
    frames.

  • Creating css for image layers

I need to ensure that my image & text box layers work. So
far I have found that layers can be created in Fireworks, but I
have already made the page and layers in Dreamweaver. I need to
check the ordering of the images because I want them to change when
a link is hit to cover a 10 step procedure. What should I look for
in my CSS sheet? can someone go over this with me?

A FW layer and a DW layer have no similarity. Furthermore,

  • Nesting Layers

I'm not having any luck nesting layers in Dreamweaver. I have
drawn two separate layers, and unclicked the 'Prevent Overlaps'
button, then tried to move one layer within the other - I get the
barred circle symbol, and the moved layer snaps back the instant I
unclick. Plus, the 'prevent overlaps' button re-checks itself. Is
there a option or preference somewhere that I need to set that I
    haven't found?

  • How Do I Move A Table in DW8?

In DW8 I want to be able to move tables around. Currently I'm
drawing them on layers, then moving the layers around, but a layer
position in DW is different when you preview in browser whereas
tables seem to be the same. This makes designing a lot of guess
work, and I'm concerned about the variance showing up in other
browsers making my design look weird. I've been on Lynda.com on the
DW8 Essentials course which is fantastic, but nothing on how to do
this. Anyone have any tips for me on this?

    > When I tried, the layers would move around
    > unexpectedly when resizing the browser window.
Layers don't move. What you saw was the rest of the page
    moving away from
    the absolutely positioned elements.
    > Plus I've visited websites
    > that use layers, even high-profile, well-known sites,

This is indeed the hallmark of a poorly informed webmaster.
    Using layers
for layout is a typical mistake made by the inexperienced.
    > In the old days, I think layers were supposed to
    > be merged within Dreamweaver to create some kind of

I have no idea where you got that idea. It's not one I have
    ever seen
    promoted.

This is just nonsense. Layers are not a DW invention -
    absolute positioning
is a legitimate part of CSS. When used properly, it can be
    exceptionally
    valuable.

Yes, but given your question, I'm thinking you are already

absolute positioning is one of the most common ways to get

  • Placing an image on matching Questions

Using Captivate 3, I would like to use the matching question
to match images, such as icons, with their usage. Is it possible to
insert small images in one of the column and how. Any suggestions
    will be much appreciated.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
But, placing one image on top of another in a web page must be a task that happens all the time.. I just have not found a straight forward way to do it yet.
    It's really not common.
It can be done via layering (what Dreamweaver calls APDivs) but you may still get layout issues with browser resizing.

Two weeks later I tried to implement an interaction in my
page... and got an error message after I had clicked on the action
    manager tab:
"Action manager data was invalid. “ The next message
was about a JavaScript-error in onLoad (coursebuilder
    interaction.htm).
It was not possible any more to edit the interaction in any
site (also not in the tutorial test site...).
I already have de-/re-installed all extension (and only try
CourseBuilder alone), de-/re-installed dreamweaver, deleted all
support files, build a new test site...
I'm confused about it - but I need to deliver the test pretty
    soon.
Maybe I did a basic mistake?
Your help would be appreciated very much
    Kind Regards

It's still very strange. I really have tried quiet a lot of
options but I still can't start the action manager in
CourseBuilder. In the last weeks I googled a lot. There are some
mistery reports that CourseBuilder stoped to work suddenly. But
eighter is was solved by a new installation or there was no answer.
Finally I made it with forms and layers in dreamweaver
    directly.
Even though you have to do more editing...
at least you are not sitting in front of a black box without
    knowing what's going on.

  • Placing an image on top of existing image

I seem to have a lot of trouble with placing an image on top of an existing image and then wanting it to stay relative to the original. As in... I want to put a button on an image of a map. Then later.. will make a hotspot on that area to open another window.
My trouble is with placing the button and then having it stay relative to the map no matter how the browser window moves or is sized.  What is the prefered method using DW CS4?  Can you point to a tutorial on how to do this...
    Thanks for your time
    Ralph

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
But, placing one image on top of another in a web page must be a task that happens all the time.. I just have not found a straight forward way to do it yet.
    It's really not common.
It can be done via layering (what Dreamweaver calls APDivs) but you may still get layout issues with browser resizing.
