Layers in Lightroom

I'm a professional photographer and am wondering why selective edting with a brush is only available with exposure,  brightness, contrast, saturation, clarity, and sharpness corrections? Why can't I selectively edit with all the editing tools? Do you know how much more useful Lightroom would be if I could selectively edit with a recovery brush, fill light brush, black point brush, vibrance brush, color temp brush, tint brush, color channels brush, sharpening brush, etc? If all these extra tools are useful, and they are, wouldn't they be even more usefull if I could apply them only to the parts of my image that need them instead of the whole darn thing? Bibble Pro 5 can do it. Aperture 3 can do it. Heck, Capture One Pro 6 can do it and it can even apply those effects to layers that can been named. Adobe invented layers and masks. Why cant I have them in Lightroom? Imagine non-destructive editing with no boundaries. Don't rely one your Monopoly with Photoshop's abilities to guaranty professional photographers loyalty. There are some nice options out there catered to photographers. Pretty soon we won't even need Photoshop. You will wan't to make sure that we still purchase Adobe by making Lightroom the best of the best. Its about time Lightroom steps it up. Adobe has the capability to make a truly amazing program to meet photographers needs.
Thank you.
PS Im not dogging Lightroom. I love lightroom. I'm just making suggestions base on a professional photographers needs.

I also would like to be able to apply highlight recovery selectively, but know not how to do it.  Any tricks (other than applying negative exposure selectively, which does not work for the reason stated)?
I do not expect an answer to these questions, but you never know.
I know exactly what you mean.  I frequently want to recover details and the highlight recovery does the job, but "flattens" the rest of the image, making it a little duller.  One thing you can try is to reduce the overall exposure until the area you want to recover looks okay, and then set a brush with an offsetting positive exposure to paint back in the underexposure.  Unfortunately the local brush exposure algorithm seems to work differently from the overall exposure, so you will have different contrast and you will need a different offset exposure, but it sometimes works.  This is pretty clunky, which just emphasizes the need for localized recovery.  Unfortunately, this really applies to every adjustment you can make in lightroom, hence all the requests for a true layers type implementation.
Here is an example where I ended up creating two files to send to photoshop from lightroom, one unchanged and one with the recovery for a white highlight on the bluebird's "hip" area.  I blended them in photoshop.  The file with the recovery made the rest of the bluebird significantly duller.  I could improve it with increased saturation but I could not reproduce the original colour in the rest of the bluebird.

  • Problems opening multiple images as layers from Lightroom 4 to Photoshop CS6

I'm having trouble bringing multiple photos from Lightroom 4 into Photoshop CS6 as layers. In LR4, I select the multiple photos I want to bring in, right click and from the pop-up menu select "Edit In", then "Open as Layers In Photoshop...". Photoshop CS6 then opens but the photos do not load in. I then get an error in LR4 about a minute later that says "The files could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CS6 could not be launched." However Photoshop just opened before I got the error. How do I fix this?

Maybe a keyboard issue - shortcut key toggling multiple times. But, if you're sure your keyboard is fine, then try this:
Reset LR preferences:Windows 7/ Vista: The preference setting file is Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs, in C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences\. Rename/ move this file to a different location. LR will recreate preferences during next launch. See if this fixes the issue. The reason we're renaming or moving it is so that if it doesn't fix the error, you can move it back there so you don't have to recreate your in-application preferences again
Reset Photoshop preferences: Follow instructions here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
See if either or one of the above suggestions works.

  • Editing in Photoshop and Keeping Layers in Lightroom

I just switched to Lightroom and my workflow has slowed to a crawl, but in a week or two I hope to be moving along again.
From Lightroom I exported a file to be edited in Photoshop.  I saved it as a PSD with layers.  Later I sent it back to Photoshop, but it was flattened.  I did this regularly in Aperture and all the layers were retained so I'm sure Lightroom can do it.  What did I miss here?

Thanks Jim, it is a more of a challenge than I expected trying to get my head around all of this and still keep the workflow going.  My question was based on one experience so perhaps there were some things I overlooked.  Essentially you answered my question though and I'm glad to know it is possible so, back to work.

  • There are two layers in Lightroom - just not the way you expect.

Layers of a sort are possible, but it is more a use of files to frame images in the Print and Slideshow Modules.
Transparent PNG Items are what they are called.
    What are Transparent PNG Items?
Transparent PNG Items (TPIs) are images that may be used as a layer over, or sometimes under an image to enhance the appearance of the image.
?The TPI image is a PNG file that has transparency.
This type of file can be made inside of Photoshop.
What can I use TPIs for?
Framing images on output or in the slideshow, but not in all places an Identity plate can be used.
See how you can do this at LightroomExtra.com

    You're welcome.
It's not that cold here right now. About 0°C. And not much snow either. The most have melted away. We only have the remnants of a 5x6x1,5 meter snow airplane that me and my four year old son Max built a couple of weeks ago.
The best part were then we spray painted the whole thing with blue food dye!
You should have seen the looks on the neighbors faces when they passed by ;-)
But the nights are dark and are a perfect time to run LR through it's paces

  • Photo Layers won't open in element 12, from Lightroom 5

I have tried exporting photos into elements as layers (From Lightroom) , once elements opens, nothing is showing. Curious if I am doing something wrong. If I just open the photos in elements and put them as layeres  manually, it works fine. I was just under the assumption I could do it from light room as well.(the option is given hence the assumption) just as a sidenote I did change output from 16-8 bit in preferences, that didn't fix anything, just read that on another site

Ok, what is your operating system and the exact Lightroom version...
Also what does it show in Preferences under External Editing:

  • Help with "edit in" most items grayed out

I am not able to use anything but Edit in Photoshop and open as a smart object under "photo" in the drop down dialog. Please help me so that I am able to edit in Camera Raw, merge to Panorama, HDR, another application and open as layers from Lightroom.
I currently have Lightroom 2.0, Camera Raw 4.5 and I just installed the upgrade patch of Photoshop CS3 so I am using 10.01. I thought that maybe this patch would work....but to no avail. I am using XP Pro for Windows. I re-loaded my entire system and decided to only install 2.0.... rather then 1.4 and then 2.0 as I was having problems with Lightroom this way as well. Thanks so much I really appreciate any assistance with this issue.
    Ruth

Thanks so much. Actually that is a good point about selecting multiple photos. I had not done that as I didn't think that the program was working so I was editing through Bridge. Also Ian I will try the upgrade and see if that fixes the problem. I use Camera Raw all the time so I was really discouraged when it didn't show up after the CS3 patch. I will keep you posted as to whether your suggestions worked or not....thanks for your quick replies Rob and Ian!!!

  • Image/File overlay mask

I am a commerical photographer and the one feature that CaptureOne has, that Lightroom does not, is an image overlay. A TIFF, jpeg or pdf file can be placed on top of your image and the transparent parts will allow your image to show through. The overlay is like a layer. You are able to drag it around, resize and adjust it's transparency.
Almost every photoshoot now relies on being able to see masks that the Art Director has created in InDesign to be overlayed on the screen so we can make sure the shot is working in their layout. This is more than just getting the dimensions right, there are design elements and blocks of copy to work around. CaptureOne has had this feature for a long time and during a tethered session it has become absolutely vital. OnOne software promises layers in Lightroom soon, but no one really knows how this will work. As new images appear, they should come up with the image overlay automatically visible.
There a LOT of commerical shooters looking to use Lightroom instead of CaptureOne now that tethering has become much more mature, but the overlay really is THAT important. I plan to shoot into Lightroom, but had CaptureOne watch the folder so when i need to see the overlay it is available, but this is definitely a hassle.
    Thank you,
    greg

There is a poor mans trick to test your photo within a page layout without leaving lightroom. in the print module add a custom watermark to your page and there use a full page png file with transparency to add your layout over your photo. Works just like a real layer would and there is even some cool thing about this trick. When printing contact sheets the overlay stays and you'll get a page showing you a nice overview of which of your photos works best with the layout.  But I add my vote to the feature request. Real overlays in tethering and maybe as a adjustable overlay in Develop would be really helpfull.

  • Be able to combine multiple images within LR

Just like having layers inside Lightroom. The less I have to go to Photoshop the better.

    Hi timtimtimtim12345,
You can use Adobe PDF Pack to combine PDF files (12 at a a time using that service). When you use PDF Pack, you can determine what order the files are combined in, but it doesn't offer more granularity than that. If you wanted more control over how the pages are combined, you would want to use Acrobat, which is also offered as a monthly subscription (and as an annual one).
I am happy to swap your subscription for you. Please let me know if you'd like me to take care of that for you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Missing priority rules for local adjustments

It would be nice -- in the absence of layers for Lightroom -- to have a feature that lets me sort the various local adjustments in a picture (i.e. the gray points) so that some have priority over others. Currently, I found no way to achieve that: If regions which I painted with the adjustment brush slightly overlap and either has different settings, the result is not really predictible. I for my part use Photoshop to make precise adjustments, but I'd prefer to stay in Lightroom. Is there something I missed or would that be an idea for future development?
    Andreas

If you have to do various local adjustments, Photoshop is your program of choice.
Lr does not so well with local adjustments, not to speak of various local adjustments.
Try to avoid overlapping areas of different Adjustment Brushes.
You most probably know that you can erase areas of an Adj. Brush where you painted by mistake by holding down the Alt/Opt key.
And, no, you can't prioritize the various Adj. Brushes.

  • Can photoshop cc stack and align photos produced from lenses with barrel distortion

I have a series of astrophotos that include terrestrial foreground and the milky way in the background.  The images were taken with a wide angle lens at f/2.8.  To increase the signal to noise ratio I would like to stack the images; however, due to the rotation of the earth the position of ht milky way relative to the foreground changes in each shot.  To correct for this I have imported the raw images as layers from lightroom and made a copy of all the images and transformed one copy of all the images into a smart object for stacking the foreground.  On the background (sky) copy, I made a layer mask that masked out the foreground for each photo.  Next I used the edit > auto-align-auto feature to align the images.  Next I deleted the layer masks and stacked the images using layers > smart-object > stack mode > median and photoshop did stack the images.  While the center and center top of the images did stack with a good image and an increase in the SNR, the rest of the photo came out blurred/smeared.  I have tried this many times and I keep getting the same thing.  Is barrel distortion causing this and if so is there anything I can do to correct for it?  I am attaching a before and after photo here, so hopefully you can see what I am talking about.  It is only aligning part of the sky and is just smearing the rest.

That would be my guess - that the movement of the stars between shots was enough to bring lens distortion into the equation.  Which lens are you using?  If it's just a simple barrel/pincushion distortion then you might be able to fix it before stacking.  But anything more complicated like mustache (in case you're using the Samyang/Rokinon 14 mm) would probably lead to issues.
Even with simple barrel distortion you might run into problems.  The fixes are only approximate, intended to remove visible distortion in an image when viewed as a whole.  But this use is a particularly extreme test of how perfect the correction can be, I wouldn't be fully surprised if there are still sections that are out of alignment.  It's an interesting problem, I'm curious to hear how it plays out.  That said, I'm sure you're far from the first to do this, so perhaps visiting an astro-photographer forum would be helpful.
Personally, I'd have Lightroom apply the lens profile correction, then export all the images to Photoshop, using the same post processing.  If you're using the Samyang there's a profile you can download, but it only gets it close.  You may have to do a bit of manual masking on specific areas to make sure everything is as sharp as you want it.
Edit: I could see it just being a PS alignment issue.  There's a lot of stars there.  I'm not sure how the algorithm works, but I'd assume it just lines up a few points.  If it messed up one of the points by just a tiny bit it'd probably throw off the entire image. I haven't used that function in a long time, but I remember trying to use the stacking feature back with CS5 and it did an absolutely terrible job.  I've heard it has gotten better, but everyone I talked to that did focus stacking all used third party software for that stuff.  Maybe there's a better program that people are using for this kind of work.

  • Problems doing roundtrip from LR to PS

When I edit a picture in LR5 and then edit in PS2014 and save the picture, when I go back to LR5 the PS edits are not there. Any ideas why not? Thanks!

Did you flatten the Photoshop document before you saved it as a tiff you can save  it as a jpeg for jpeg has no layers like lightroom.  Lightroom is not an image editor with layer support it can do flat tiff and jpeg .

  • Aperture to LR4

    Hello All,
Amature/hobbyiest here who shoots with a Cannon 60D mostly in RAW. I have been an Aperture user for about two years, and I have had quite a bit of success with it. But one thing that I feel limitied by is the inability to create layers, edit individual layers, combine those layers into one photo (I believe this is called "flattening"), and create HDR phots. I know that this is not what Aperture is designed to do, so I'm looking to make the switch to one of the Adobe products. I have been told by the Adobe rep on line that both layers and HDR is contained within LR4, but then I have read elsewhere that neither of these features are in LR4. So here I am posing the question. I know that this isn't the specific forum for this second question but considering I'm looking for the flexibilty of layers and HDR, would I be better suited to explore Elements 11? CS6 is going to be out of my budget, so it's between these two products.
Thanks, in advance, for your responses.
    Marc

I have been told by the Adobe rep on line that both layers and HDR is contained within LR4
    Neither is true.
    Lightroom does not do layers.
Lightroom can indeed work with HDR 32 bit images, but it cannot create such images; you need other software to create an HDR image.
If you want both in one program, you should probably look at Photoshop CS6. I believe the most recent version of Elements has layers (but with fewer features than Photoshop), but it doesn't create HDR photos.

  • Can PSD files saved back to Lightroom retain their layers?

When a file is edited in Photoshop. you can choose a TIFF or PSD. It would seem the advantage to PSD would be the ability to retain layers when saved back to Lightroom especially in a file which remains a work in progress. I have not been able to achieve this result. If this is currently not possible, what is the advantage, if any, to use the PSD format?

Not and be exported as such from LR. LR adjustments will be done to the flattened composite image. PSDs must be saved with 'Maximum Compatibility' to be used at all in LR.

  • Lightroom & Layers...what are the chances ?

My current workflow is Lightroom mainly > Photoshop CC for Layers, Actions etc. I also use Nik [Google] plugins. This set-up is absolutely spot-on and covers just about any image scenario likely to crop up [for me]. The problem is that PS CC is complete overkill for my purposes and is likely to get very expensive, when considering the accumulating CC Membership contributions.
If Lightroom had Layers I'd be in heaven. Anyone any insider knowledge as to if/when this could happen?
I appreciate that Adobe needs to restrict competition from its siblings but hey, PSE has Layers, just doesn't have 16bit or ProPhoto RGB functionality.
    Kindest,
    Lyndon

No one here works for Adobe, so we don't really know.
Nevertheless, if I had to guess, I would say that Layers will not be coming to Lightroom any time soon.
