Layers in Pages ?

Hello,
    I have used Adobe Photoshop CS2 on my G4 in the past, but I was hoping to use Pages, manly to create flyers. I like using layers in Photoshop and I was wondering if there is such a feature in Pages. Pages may call it something different, but how it works is lets say I want to use a photo for my background and then write text over that photo. I would create two layers one of the photo and one of the text. I would also increase the transparency of the photo so it would not be so noticeable. I have uploaded a simple flyer, notice how the logo is in the background.
    If you have any other suggestions I would be more then happy to give it a shot, maybe there is another app. that would do this, other then Photoshop.

Sure, Pages works with layers very nicely, although it doesn't call them that. Here's a quick example showing some of the techniques you can use:
Pages gives you a lot of control over opacity of all objects and text (the original logo used here in the background was 100% black when I put it in).
EDIT However, Pages doesn't provide the kind of options for outputting for commercial printing that PS does, if that's a consideration for you.

I have a Illustrator file with 38 layers (pages). I wanted to create a 38 page PDF. I'm not well versed in Illustrator and dealing with tiling, artbroads and document set-up with throwing me.
Long story short, I was able to create a one page PDF with 38 layers. Can I convert those layers to pages in Acrobat (CS5)?

Shared layers between pages problem!

Hi guys
In Fireworks Cs5 every time i create an element on a new page it appears on all the other pages, which is very annoying.
I've not set any page as a master page, so i don't know why this is happening. Can anyone tell me how to turn of whatever setting that's making this happen.

How can I change get a 2xportrait page layout in iPhoto 11?

I am laying out a new wedding photo album in iPhoto 11 (version 9.2.3) using the Formal hardcover theme. A new album appears with a number of pre-set layouts: one of which has two portrait photos side by side.
There are two pre-set pages with this layout but I want more like this as I have a lot of full length photos from the shoot. However, this layout does not appear in the 2-photo layouts that are offered when I try to change the layout of a particular page. The closest is two landscape photos.
If I drag a portrait photo into one of these, it gets cropped.
Is there a way that I get a two-portrait side by side layout? If not, then can somebody recommend an alternaive to iPhoto for producing high quality printed photo albums?

That theme will only offer landscape for 2 photos per page layouts.
1 - click on the Layout button at the bottom while viewing the page you want to change:
In the Layout tray at the right you can select any number of photos per page and layouts for those photos:
If I drag a portrait photo into one of these, it gets cropped.
Some themes allow you to Control-click on the photo and select "Fit Photo to Frame Size":
but the Formal theme is not one of them.
The Modern Lines theme gives you two portrait per page with a variety of frames under Options and Fit to Frame Size:
With a gray backgroud you get this:

Slow Loading On iWeb Pages - Really in Need of Help! (Thanks!!) :o)

Hi Everyone!
I have been a lurker here, learning from reading other's posts. I am in serious need of help, as I have been struggling with this issue for over a week and I can't move forward to other things until I get it resolved...
Here's what's up: I am creating a single-page website as a landing page for a product I offer. (These are very common now in product marketing). The page is here: http://www.howtogetamazingrelationships.com.
The page that is there is about the 4th iteration of the page in the quest for a faster-loading page. Everytime I test it - no matter what I do - it ends up being about a 24 second load time. Here are the things I have done to try to speed this baby up:
1. Took my youtube video off auto-play.
2. Optimized the site using Web Site Maestro. 27% decrease in size; no load time difference.
3. Took out shapes and graphics.
4. Rebuilt the site on a blank template - now it is actually a little worse!
5. Took out the website.js file - totally messed things up.
6. Eliminated the navigation.
Nothing is even showing the least bit of difference in speed...and it is driving me crazy.
Here's the thing - I have also contacted Web Site Maestro's support for help, and they said that the problem was the size of the site and the length of the page. Okay, more info -
I checked my site on a different web analyzer, and it does seem to be loading quickly - 15.66 seconds for a 56 k, but only 3.6 for T1. So that is good -
One thing I noticed in the recommendations is that there are 6 scripts that are running, that can slow things down. I don't really know how to change that (I am pretty web-savvy, but far from a developer) Here's what they recommended on the page -

TOTAL_OBJECTS - Caution. You have 18 total objects on this page. From 12 to 20 objects per page, the latency due to object overhead makes up from 75% to 80% of the delay of the average web page. Consider reducing, eliminating, and combining external objects (graphics, CSS, JavaScript, iFrames and XHTML) to reduce the total number of objects, and thus separate HTTP requests. Need help placing images on separate layers

I'm a novice to Javascript but I've been trying to learn. I have a project where i need to place muliple images from a folder onto separate layers (same page) in a template. I tried to modify "ImageCatalogue" script within InDesign to disastrous results. On another thread someone was kind enough to give me a short script "Objects to Layers" written by Kasyan Servetsky. This was very helpful but not exact to my needs so now I'm starting from scratch. I've been playing with the following code trying to get it to work. It doesn't and I'm getting frustrated. I keep changing this line but it keeps coming back as "undefined":
myImage.place(newLayer);
Can someone please point me in the right direction? Is my coding too simple? The end comments are my wish list of add-ons should I ever get these layers working.

Layers disappear when inserting HTML

I hope there is a simple solution to this. I am trying to use
layers for a simple webpage and when I insert Fireworks HTML into a
layer, all of my layers disappear and become layout cells on my
page. Has anyone seen this before?

how do I center layers in a webpage so no matter what size

Resolution or monitor size is not the critical issue. Browser
viewport
width is.

Layers in IDCS2

I have a question about the use of layers in InDesignCS2.
Is it possible to open or close layers per page. I have a document with several layers in each layer there is a different lay-out object. In my document I want to show the different lay-out objects but every page is different.
Is it possible that for different pages, different layers are opened or is this false hope on my part.

Layers are document-wide in InDesign.
Open one on one spread and it's open on all the others.

Layers deleted when saving in CS5

Greetings,
I´ve saved a PNG with layers, frames, pages...etc and close it. When i resumed work next day and open the file again some elements and layers were gone. In every frame.
This is most annoying and it had happened a couple of times so i´m thinking of switching back to CS3 again where this odd behaviour didn´t happen.
Does anybody else experienced this kind of bug? Is Adobe aware of this?

Hard to tell the specific conditions, if it happens again i´ll inform you.
Once it was with a PNG file with several pages and frames but yesterday it was a fresh new document with barely a dozen frames and just one layer.
In either case Fireworks have been running for hours and had already started to perform badly (that well know memory bug). I suspect it had something to do with that...

HT204364 How do I make different greeting cards and send them to the same address in a bulk - not having to pay $3.99 shipping for each card

In Iphoto, I would like to produce a bunch of greeting cards with different pics for different people and I would like all these cards to be sent to my home address in one shipment.
The way I understand it, I can only prodce one card and order multiple copies of the same card.
I am looking for a way not to spend $0.99 + $3.99 (shipping)....
Can this be done?
Or is there an app that allows that?
Or how can I save each card and have them printed somewhere else?

Not really because the format is an odd size and when you save it as a pdf file there's a white border around the card.
There are 2 tutorials on how to print them yourself if you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers or Pages from iWork: iP06 - Printing a iPhoto Greeting Card and iP07 - Printing a iPhoto Greeting Card to Standard Stock Sizes. Apple has made it difficult to print them borderless unless the card color is the same as the card stock.

Feature Request: Photo Borders and Copying in Books

These are a few related feature requests. If anyone knows of a better way to do this with the current software, then I would love to hear it.
When making books I like to have borders around the pictures of various colors (usually black or white) and various widths. In Apeture this is a pain to do. I fiqured out that I could fake it by making a picture box and inserting a solid black picture into it and then creating a smaller picture box in front of it for my real photo. This might be tolerable if I could at least then select both picture boxes and their contents to copy and then onto other pages as a template that I can resize as needed.
Ideally I would love to be able to copy and paste multiple elements on a book page and I would like to be able to define photo borders. Any chance of seeing this in the near future?

Thanks for the reply. You are right, the cut and paste works fine, it just didn't work the way I expected it to. Maybe that is a GUI design thing to consider. I was actually trying to click and drag a selection box like you might do in iPhoto to select multiple images that are right beside each other. This doesn't work at all in Aperture, but your method does work just fine.
I agree with the other poster that some additional features like:
Photo Borders
Export to PSD (with layers)
Custom page sizes and Custom themes
would be very nice and start to make that tool truley useful.

Accounting for varying values in Data merging

Hi everyone,
I've been asked to create a template for a degree certificate. So far I've created an InDesign document and used data merge to import the data from a .csv file. I've also used GREP styles to resize the name of the degree when it's longer than a certain number of characters. So far so good.
My question has to do with how to account for different categories of certificates. Let me explain. In my spreadsheet I have thre types of certificates A, B, and C. Each category triggers two specific bits of text. So for example:
When Cat = A
the following blurb appears at the top of the certificate:
WHEREAS THE UNIVERSITY OF NOWHERE HAS BEEN EMPOWERED BY ACTS OF THE LEGISLATURE OF MARS TO CONFER DEGREES AND AWARD DIPLOMAS OF THE UNIVERSITY
and the following text appears just before the name of the degree:
HAS BEEN ADMITTED BY THE UNIVERSITY TO THE DEGREE OF
When Cat = B
the following blurb appears at the top of the certificate:

I first thought of creating IF formulas in Excel but it doesn't work because I don't want the result to appear in the data, I want it to only appear once merged in the InDesign template.
SO THE QUESTION IS:
Is there any way to specify IF THEN values directly in the InDesign document? If not, does anyone have any idea if what I'm being asked to do here is even possible?
Any help or nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated,

I'll need to work through the example, but it would be that the blurbs are on thier own separate layers of page 1. And the data fields are simply on their own layer, still on that page.
That's as far as I got in a quick perusal of his example. I plan on recreating the example tonight when I have a bit of my own time to spend. I suspect it will be a lot more clear following the example, bit for bit. If it does work out as it seems it should, I can think of a. coupon job I merged that would have (maybe) been easier than the 5 merge files I ended up with.
I do want to mention, pointing back to my earlier comments, if there is anyway you can work with the IT people to produce a clean file ready for you, I would do so. Colin mentioned XML, and that is what I would strive for in this situation. But XML is a bit like being thrown into the deep end of the pool and learning to swim at the same time.

Problem with the 3d part of photoshop CS5

Dear everybody,
im trying to follow a PS tutorial on the web, which is quite good i think (http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/3d/create-a-shiny-earth-with-photoshop-3d-layers/comment -page-1/#comments) , but i run upon a problem which is next:
At part 11, he tells me to: 'The weather seems to be too cloudy, because we can see the clouds that are on the other side through the transparent areas. Making the material one sided will fix that problem. Uncheck Two Sided.
As you can see, he can uncheck that, because he is in CS4 i think. But in CS5 you can not uncheck that, although, i can't.
Can someone please tell me/explain to me where i can uncheck that? Because i really can't find it.

Hi Jordi,
The option to light both sides of a material was removed in CS5. Having said that there are a few other ways to achieve the effect presented in the tutorial. The quickest way is to go to 3D> Render Settings... and check 'Remove Backfaces' in the Face Style options. What is happeing is the inside and outside surfaces are getting rendered, and since the cloud 3D layer is effectively 'in front' of the earth 3D layer you are seeing more than wanted. By removing the backface, you no longer render the inside surface.
Another method is too merge the 3D layers so the clouds become a shell that covers the earth. Doing it this way you can also light and shade the earth with the clouds and not need to use the Layer Styles drop shadow method.
Hopefully that makes sense.
