Layers locked or compressed?

I saved a document as a PSD doc and JPEG. I went to reopen it to make an edit but the layers are compressed or locked so I can't change anything. Can I fix this before redoing the entire thing?

The PSD layer should have the layer structure preserved, unless you flattened the layers.
The JPEG is flattened.
PSE is not primarily a text editor and has very limited functionality in this regard.

Background Layers Locked on all Images

All of my images are coming up with background layers locked. This was not a conscious setting on my part. How do I unlock them?

You should be able to use the Clone Stamp Tool even on a locked background layer.
You're either doing something wrong you're not telling us, or you need to trash your Photoshop preferences.
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Next time, please give details on your version of Photoshop and the OS. Also "use of the clone stamp tool will not change anything" is not nearly descriptive enough for us to figure out what you're doing or what is happening.

Layers Locked Inadvertantly

Hello Everyone
I am making a montage for my son's 40th birthday showing small pictures of him and our family over the years fro very early-age to the present time.
I had about 30 pictures already arranged when I must have done something quite stupid, as ALL the layers disappeared and the Background Locked layer is the only one left!
Must I begin again, or is there a way of getting my layers back please?

Thank you again Ed. My mouse has a double-click button which I obviously pressed, but what the mouse-pointer was resting on at the time, who knows? It was something at the bottom of the Layers-Palette because from having all my layers labelled with picture-descriptions, I simply wound up with the 'locked' background layer,and no way back, at least not what I could think of. Very frustrating!
Also I very rarely use keyboard shortcuts.

I'm still using ID CS5.5 on Mac OS, and my cursor is a pencil with a line through it on locked layers, so I'm not sure if they changed the interface or if you are seeing something different. Either way, have you tried opening the layers pallet (Window>Layers) and unlocking the layer (click the lock icon beside the layer you want to unlock)?

Layers & locking CS6 (?)

the locking system of layers in CS6 is a bit different. But here's the problem. I created a folder, dropped a layer in there w/ a graphic. Duplicated the layer, and then began using the arrow keys to make the separation so I can move it around to a different location. - Both layers are moving together. Why is this? They are not linked. So I tried locking one, but the 'freed' layer won't move at all now: Could not use the move tool because linked layers are locked.
The application is automatically linking layers that are within the same folder. But how do I keep them separated?
There is no option to unlink...another flaw w/ CS6. Linked layers is grayed out.
How do I get around this?

You've already discovered the effect of auto-select group. Clicking on the image with the Move Tool will result in the uppermost visible layer group under the cursor being targeted - see it being highlighted in Layers panel.
If auto-select mode is layer then the same idea except it applies to layers.
However, if a layer or group is positionally/fully locked it will be ignored.
Auto-select disabled will prevent all layers/groups from being targeted by clicking with Move Tool.

Unlocking groups keep layers locked

HI,
I'm running into this issue several times and it's really breaking my workflow.
When I lock a group and then unlock it, the layers within it remain locked.
I have this issue running Photoshop CS6 and CC on Mac OS X 10.9.1
It doesn't always happen.
Any suggestion?

I'm talking about all the layers within a group.
I think I just figured out what's the exact sequence that triggers the issue:
1. select two or more groups containing layers (everything is unlocked and the groups are collapsed)
2. lock the two or more groups
3. select one group and unlock it
4. the layers within this group stay locked.
If locking 3 groups at the same time and then unlocking 2 out of 3, the first is fully unlocked (also the layers inside are unlocked), while the second has the issue.

PSE 11 all layers locked-always

I have PSE 11 and no matter how I save what I am working on, even as a PSD with layers, I am unable to edit the project after it is saved. This started happening all of a sudden and it is difficult to work with being unable to simply edit as needed. Any help would be appreciated!

When PSE gets weird, the first thing is to reset the prefs. Go to the editor>preferences>general and click this button, then restart the editor:

I created a Muse site, saved it, and when I reopened it all of the elements were locked and uneditable.

I can't edit/use any tools of my images b/c it says the layer is locked.

This usually occurs when opening an image as it is placed on the background layer which is a locked layer. If this is the case you can just drag the lock icon on that layer to the trash can. Then all kind of possiblities are available.

Is there a way to combine layers into precomp AND trim them

Hi. I have a bunch of image sequences that I bring in from a 3D program. Each sequence may have a separate set of images for Shadow, Specular color, Ambient Color, Glow etc - so clip A could have several layers, each with identical length. The same would hold for each other clip.
Ideally, I would like to put all the Shadow, specular, ambient, and glow images of clip A into a precomp, and the same for clips B,C, D, and so on.
When I do this, however, the precomp suddenly occupies the whole timeline, and if I manually trim comp back to correct size, the precomp goes to beginning of the timeline and I have to mannually reposition it. This can quickly get tedious.
Is there a way to automate this process? Or something to use other than precomps that would essentially group the layers/lock them together so all the A clips function as one unit, and all the B clips as another?
Andrew Kramer (at Video Copilot.net) has a script to automatically trim compositions, but I can't figure out if there's a way to use it in this instance where I need to combine multiple layers first.

I'm not where I can look but there is a script that takes the in and out point of a bunch of layers in your Pre-comp, trims the pre-comp, then trims the pre-comp and keeps it in the right place.
I usually don't take the time to do this. Instead I set timeline markers for the in and out points of the pre-comp, then, if the comp starts getting really confusing, I'll just set an in and out point for the pre-comp rather than change the length of the pre-comp. This makes my ELAT (edit this look at that) workflow easier if I have to dive into the pre-comp to make changes.
Let me make another observation. From your description it sounds like you are trying to make too long a movie in AE. AE shines at making shots, and occasionally, making sequences. Even Pixar renders out shots and then moves those shots into a NLE to turn them into a sequence, then a scene, then a movie. When I do the kind of compositing you're doing I treat each rendered 3D shot with all of the render passes as a single composition. I render the result, and then edit the sequence in a NLE. Only on rare occasions will I do the editing of the sequence using a bunch of pre-comps as layers in AE.

Copying between layers.

When I try to copy and paste an image from one layer to another layer in the same document, I receive the following error:
"Cannot paste or place onto locked or hidden layers. Do you want to unlock and show all affected layers in order to paste?"
Now, I do not have any layers locked.
What I do have is the original layer hidden. For whatever reason, I don't seem to be able to paste into any layer other than the one I've copied from. I don't believe I have had this problem in the past.
Any ideas?

I believe I am.
The new layer is selected. But no matter what I do it keeps trying to paste to the old layer (the layer from which the copied material derived).
In fact, I've even selected items in the new layer and hit paste inside... but again, no luck.

Unlock all layers

Hi everybody.
i recieved a illustrator file with thousands of layers/sublayers, one of them is locked, and illustrator don't let me replace a font because says that "layer is locked".
there is a command to unlock all layers?
or to force a replace font without unlocking?

When I had no top layers locked it looked like yours.

Set effectsActive on a locked layer

I have a script I wrote that toggles the fx on/off for the layers in my comp. It's really handy and speeds up my workflow quite a bit. The only problem is when I have my layers locked, it won't let me set the effectsActive attribute. I can toggle the fx switch on/off in the UI when the layer is locked with no problems. Why can't I do this via a script. Is there a workaround to accomplish the desired goal?

That works for me! Temporarily unlock then re-lock the layer when done.
I'm curious why I'm able to toggle the fx switch in the UI with the layer locked but can't do it via script. That's what gave me the idea for the script to begin with; I had no problems doing it via the UI. Any idea why that is?

Unlocking items on layers and Unlocking layers

I have files that come to me that have parts of layers locked with the Command+2 function and that also have layers locked.
I have an AppleScript that will unlock layers but it doesn't unlock the other locked items.
Can anyone supply an AppleScript that will do both?

All fonts are missing in indesign

I closed my file last night with master pages items and text layers locked in the layers pallette.
The file is to the point that I have master pages set with columns, and guides, and pages, and footer with text. It is all layed out with images, ready to start typography. I used Myriad pro, and I think Bell ( this may have been brought in from dafont, not sure).
When I opened the file this morning it said that the fonts were missing. I tried to find the missing fonts, but ALL the fonts are missing in the font selection window.
This was when I realized that the layers were locked. I dont know if this had anything to do with it, but Ive never used layers before, so assume it is a connection.
I tried opening a new document and there are no fonts available there either. It says times, but you cant change it. It is showing pink backgound like when fonts are missing, and just Os'.
I opened illustrator to see if the fonts are available there, and they are, no problem. It is just indesign that is affected.
Can anyone help?
