Layers lost after saving as psd

I am having trouble with losing all my layers after saving.  I have read many posts hoping to find some direction with no success.  I tried rebuilding the entire project and only saving as a psd, still no success.  I have made sure to check the layers box.  And every time I open it on my Mac, the layers are still intact.  However, my programmer and everyone else I send it to- end up with one merged background layer.  Does anyone happen to know what may be the reason for this?  I appreciate any help/ discussion.

I believe I have solved it.  And the above mentioned was partially correct.  I was sending it through email, and it was being compressed to 'medium size' rather than actual size.  This was rendering the file uneditable w/in Ps.  I probably should have figured this out sooner, but I guess it happens.  Nevertheless, thanks for the help.
Attached is a thread to a similar problem/ solution.

  • Lines are appearing after saving a psd in cc 2014

    Hello,
I've been having some issues when saving psd's in CC 2014. After saving an image lines tend to appear, and in one case actually added to a mask I was creating. I have image examples below of what has been happening. One last note is that it seems that this issue happens sporadically. If it was on every psd I saved I would have a bit more of a solid thought as to what was wrong, but it just kinda does it whenever it feels like it. I have since restarted my computer, but the issue still is there.
This image shows when not only did the lines appear, but also they added to my mask I was creating.
This image is to show that the lines appear randomly sometimes now when viewing images and actually get saved into the document.
Until I can figure out what is happening I'm switching back to CC for awhile. Any help would be great.

Ok, I had a bit of time to further test this today -- and it looks like the "Cache Tile Size" settings is the culprit for me. The default 128k setup is creating the lines artefact while working on larger files (something around 1500x1500 pix files and up). Setting a tile size of 132k or higher, I was able to re-open files and the artefacts are gone. Putting back the 128k, opening an offending file and I have the bug. I'm able to reproduce it.
So the Cache Tile Size fixes it. One note : if I happen to export a file (ex: jpeg), the lines artefacts are "baked" into the artwork. However saving a PSD file with the artefact, and open it after changing the tile size makes the artefacts go away.
What's weird is that I get this bug now only if the "Use Graphics Processor" is unchecked. But the first time around, it was checked as it looks like it's the default upon Photoshop installed. Now I can switch it back, put the 128K tile size, and I'm ok. Again, it's not an extensive test since I did 20 minutes of fiddling with various files. I'll update later on if the bug's back since I'll use CC 2014 from now on.
Also note that the first time around, I was able to get the artefacts on much smaller files, but these we're smart objects pasted from Illustrator. This looks fixed now. It might be the way PS handles caching for vector objects.
So play with these settings, don't forget to close PS on each Performance settings change. Let us know if it fixes it.

  • Window Focus Lost After Saving Page - Any Way To Get It Back With Keyboard?

I've recently begun using Safari for Windows after having used Opera for years, and have run into a problem with window focus that I didn't have with Opera. Specifically, if you save a web page in Safari, you then find that the following functions are no longer available from the keyboard:
    1. Going back to a web page previous to the one that you just saved. Ctrl+[ does not function.
    2. Performing a search. Ctrl+F does not function.
    3. Scrolling to the bottom or top of the page. Ctrl+End and Ctrl+Home do not function. (For some reason, however, the PageUp and PageDown keys do still work in this situation.)
Why is this, and more importantly, is there a quick and easy way that you can, using only the keyboard, regain the window focus so that these functions will work again? I'm currently having to click somewhere on the page I've just saved in order to regain the focus. This is a nuisance.
    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks very much. Hitting 'Alt' button after saving the page does resolve the first (and most important) two of the three issues I listed above. FWIW, the Ctrl+End and Ctrl+Home functions only work in this post-save scenario (as I discovered by experimenting a few minutes ago) if you hit the 'Alt' button twice (or if you do something else, like perform a search and then use Ctrl+End/Home).
By the way, before posting a few days ago, I had tried using the Alt+Tab method when I had two or more applications' windows open, and it didn't help. But, after reading your last post, I've found that if you use Alt+Tab when Safari is the only window open, then it does resolve the issue, although of course, as you've indicated, it's not actually necessary to hit the 'Tab' key.
    Thanks again!

  • Changes lost after saving InDesign CS3 (WIN)

Part of our work is to make amendments to books we've typeset in InDesign. As is normal practice, we save and check our work as we go along, and subsequently close the indd file. On a few occasions now, when we have re-opened a file, we have found some of the changes we've made have not been kept. These seem to happen at random through a book, and it has happened rarely enough to prevent us getting to the bottom of it (are we doing something wrong in haste, etc?). For instance, we thought it could be our inadvertently causing Undo to do more than one edit, but our investigations on the latest occurrence of this have convincingly ruled this out. The working files are stored on the computer's hard drive (before being backed up to our server), so it's not a qestion of problems saving directly to a server, either. (So far we haven't experienced this problem on our Mac.)
We are now wondering if InDesign's ability to keep track of every save (version) of a document, which I understand is accessible through Version Cue (which we don't have installed) is at the heart of the problem. Could InDesign be retrieving earlier save-versions of a file each time we save?
Anybody any idea what could be going on? More to the point: how can we prevent this happening without our having to check again (and possibly repeatedly) through what can sometimes be more than a hundred author's amendments?
    Ideas would be gratefully received.

Many thanks for this. As a result we have adjusted our way of working in
InDesign to use Save As and overwrite rather than use Save.

  • Alpha Channel Lost After Saved

I created an alpha channel for a selection and saved the tiff file. When I reopened the file the next day, I couldn't find the saved alpha channel and the load saving option was greyout. I tried the same process a few times and without any success. Did i miss something?

Do you have Alpha Channels checked in Save As dialog?

  • Database - information lost after saving and closing.

I have a very simple database. Two text fields and a date field. There are 146 records.
Each text field occasionally contains a lot of characters (isn't 255 the max.?)
If a create another record, put in a date and some text in each text field, then save, close, and reopen the file, the new text is missing from the first text field but the date and other text is intact.
I had this problem two weeks ago. As a work-around, I created another matching database from scratch, exported the records from the corrupt file, and then imported to the new file. The new file functioned well until today.
    Any ideas?

No, it's 1004 characters per field.

No idea about this behaviour which I never saw.

  • Photoshop CS3 shuts down after opening a PSD file with layers

Hello, I have met a problem with Photoshop CS3 (Windows XP SP2, no network printer) - after opening a PSD file with layers (saved with CS2) Photoshop shuts down. No error message.
Can some of you help me? (The only software that I have installed after Creative Suite CS3 is Corel X4. I have installed no upgrades of CS3.)

    You should!
Even if it doesn't help here you should.

  • Lost audio files after saving.

I lost my audio files after saving in Logic X and now my project file has the extension .logicx on it and my audio files are nowhere to be seen. I made some changes to the project, moved the file to another folder, then they asked if I wanted to replace the other file with the new and I said yes not thinking that it would matter. Is there any way that my audio files are still out there somewhere? And no I don't have time machine hooked up.
    Thanks.

if you replaced that file.. then you have lost it's contents as they have all been replaced with the one you copied over... and as you have no backups you cannot, as they say.. un-scramble the egg...
Finally start making backups as soon as possible...
    As the old saying goes...

  • XMP metadata lost from PNG files after saveing

    Hello,
i am using Photosop CS3 SDK. through my plug-in I put some metadata in the file using XMP SDK 4.4.2.
For PNG files, if the file is modified and saved, all the XMP metadata is lost from the file.
The following steps are being done.
    1. Put some metadata in PNG file using SXMPMeta::SetProperty and SXMPMeta::AppendArrayItem
    2. modify the file (changed brightness, contrast, flattened the image).
    3. Save this file.
After saving all the xmp metadata is lost from the PNG file. This works for all other formats.
What can be wrong that I am doing?
Is there any other way to put XMP metadata in file?
    Thanks,
    Hitesh

That's probably because PNG doesn't save or read XMP metadata.
There really aren't standards for metadata in PNG. (though a few products have tried adding it in ad-hoc ways, without documenting their efforts)

  • Help!!! accidently saved my psd file and lost all my design

    hello forumers
i  accidently saved my psd file and lost all my design is there a way to get it back?!??!?!pls helppppp...
ps:i didnt delete it,i just clicked on save as wihtt he same name, but i dindt notice the design was missing, until i opened up the psd file again.
    thank you.

This is a Mac Photoshop forum, so it was a reasonable assumption. If you closed the file you are hooped unless you can access a backup.
Too late for this job, but you might want to install Dropbox. You get 2 GB of space for free on Dropbox’s servers, and any files saved in your My Dropbox (I think that’s what it’s called on Windows) folder are copied to Dropbox’s servers. The big deal is that you can share any files or folders with other users or other computers, so you could have the same folder on your work and home PCs and files saved on one are automatically updated and available on the other. The other big deal is that Dropbox keep old versions of files. I keep all working jobs in Dropbox and remove them only when complete and ready for archive. It is a huge bacon saver.
    Self serving link: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTUwMDUyOTI5
If you sign up using the above link I get a tiny increase in my allotted storage.

  • Can't open PSD files after saving them

I haven't ever had this issue before and now have had it twice in the last week or so. I scrap all the time and now after saving the file as a PSE, when I go to reopen from inside Photoshop Elements 7, it's telling me it can't be opened because it's not the right type of file. Any suggestions. I am using Vista but of course have been using the same computer with no problem up until now.

I figured it out myself. Both files I could not reopen were named for teachers. So they were Mrs. so & so. The period in the file name was causing it not to be saved correctly I suppose. When I restarted the Layout again and saved it, I saved it without the period and then no problem at all. Just wanted to let those reading know...

  • Photoshop saved a PSD file with security permissions, and now I can't access it.  Please help!

Using Photoshop CC, I saved a PSD file after several hours of editing.  I also exported a TIF file from the PSD.  After closing Photoshop, I cannot access either file in any way.  I cannot even copy them.
going to properties --> security, I get a message that reads, "You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object."  Click Advanced to continue.
When I click Advanced, it says "Unable to display current owner", and in none of the three tabs available (Permissions, Auditing, or Effective Access) can I click "Continue" and get any further than the message, "You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings".
Please help me.  This is highly frustrating, and a bug that is costing me over an hour of my time troubleshooting.
    Thank you.
    UPDATE:
I rebooted, and the files are... gone. Photoshop CC has no record of the file under "Open Recent".
What just happened? I lost a good 2 hours of work and a unique photograph
    UPDATE2
I restarted the project, saved a PSD with Maximize Compatibility selected.  Verified this file has appropriate permissions.
When I then go to File --> Save (not "Save as", but "Save"), after progressing to 90% or so, an error message comes up, "Could not save 'O:\[path]\file.PSD' because the file name was not valid."
I click "OK", and then go to the original file and check its permissions.  They are now changed to "You must have read permissions".

I have this exact problem too. Windows 8.1 CC 2014 and all of a sudden I get the problems AIJ23 has. Say I have 8 files open, I save the first 3 or four, just with Control-S (saving in PSD format) no problem, then all of a sudden on the next save I get a message saying I don't have permission to save over the file followed by the same problems as above. I use Save As so I don't loose my work but I cannot delete/rename/change permissions of the original file. This only started happening about 2-3 days ago and only happens in Photoshop. I haven't managed to find much about this issue anywhere.

  • Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?

I was under the impression that original raw files were the biggest possible. I appear to be very wrong. Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?
I'm beginning to think that saving them as psd is a bad idea.
Yes, though I've heard all the arguments of keepng the original raw files (For ex. Did you throw away the negatives when you were using film) I se eno purpose in keeping them. Once I've made the initial adjustments--cropping, color correction etc. I don't feel a need to ever go back and never do. Most of my work is done in Photoshop and I like it that way--but suddenly finding myself with such huge files doesn't appeal to me at all--and other formats like tif...well never mind for now.

Good point made c.pfaffenbichler however, my thinking is this--there is time spent on the raw file and then there is much more time spent on (usually a psd) the file once in Photoshop. For me to then go back to the orignal raw file, after having worked on it on PS would mean getting rid of all the work (larger amount of work, time wise and artistic wise) done on PS which seems pointless. Although the psd file does show your layers and stuff it only shows the end results of that layer. It does not show from where to where you pointed your brush, from what point to what point you changed the color or part of an image etc. etc.Anyhow I understand why most people keep their raw files, but this is the main reason why I do not. It would mean hours of work on an image you already worked on (and usually were satisfied with) to perhaps make some minor alteration. Also please note that though I was noce a pro photog, no I do it mostly for fun. Getting the exact red in my Coca Cola can has never been of importance. On the other hand, if there were a way of working on a raw file within Photoshop and keep it (save it as) a raw file equivalent, then I would absolutely do so.

  • Saved panorama psd is too large

I just created a panorama from 9 jpg images, each under 3MB.
But, after stitching, when I saved the .psd with layers, the resulting was 411 MB.
    Too big.
Is there a way to save in psd with layers using less space?

No. Why? When you build a panorama, you effectively make the image as many times as wide or high as a single image multiplied by the number of images, give or take overlap. This means you create a huge picture - 9 times 3000 pixels wide is 27000 pixels and those need to go somewhere. Even the smartest compression algorithm can't defeat soem simple math. The only way to reduce file size significantly would be to reduce resolution, but otherwise flattening the image/ merging the layers or saving it again to a lossy compressed format like JPG are your only option.

Having problems with Bridge shutting down after saving photo in PS Cs5,,,,,,,,,  Also when i attempt to update either PS or bridge get an error message in Adobe application manger "Error loading updater workflow"

Sorry for the late reply. My email firewall has become a little over zealous & sent a lot of my emails straight to my junk email folder, so I have only just now discovered your reply in my junk mail folder.
The only "don't open files exceeding xxx megabytes" instruction I can find in my Prefs, is in the Bridge Prefs for Thumbnails, & mine is set at 1000mb. The biggest files I handle are bigger than 200mb so I should be able to open a few, not just one.
However, this doesn't explain why I can open a psd format file of 180mb, close it, but then can't open a RAW format file of only 26mb immediately after.
I can open the RAW file only if I restart my computer - very annoying!
However, thanks for the advice about the video card & memory.
So, I'm still stuck as to what the issue is.
