Layers not casting shadows.  How strange.

I've set up a comp with a light behind a large number of grey solids aranged in a grid. The light shines through the grid and onto a perpendicular solid ground-plane.
The thing is, the grid solids aren't casting any shadows. Now, they're in a precomp which is set as a 3D layer, but all the materials options are set correctly. All of the solids AND the precomp are set to cast shadows, and the ground-plane is set to accept shadows. The light casts shadows (and it works with other objects in the scene), but no joy on the solids grid.
Here's an image showing two views of the scene along with the corresponding overhead view to show the camera and light placement. The horizontal line in the overhead view is the solids grid. Also, Trapcode Lux is on to visualize the light cone, but it's not to blame, since there are still no shadows with it off and removed from the comp.

Let me know if you can figure this out.
Thanks!

I realise this original post is 4 years old, I've only just come across it.
I had exactly the same problem it was driving me mad, the problem was caused by a 3D Null object between two other 3D objects. By moving the Null to the top of the composition's layer stack weirdly meant the shadows were visible again.

  • Lights not casting shadows on objects in scene...

I'm having a problem where my light source is not casting shadows on the objects in the scene.
    http://i.imgur.com/GUtMD.png
The light is set to cast shadows and the objects are set to receive them. I have not been able to get the light to affect the objects in the scene at all. Is there some other type of setting to make them recognize each other?
This is After Effects CS6, all up to date.

You have Draft 3D enabled, which does not render any shadows at all.

  • Shadow not casting in my project

Im trying to cast a shadow to an object using lights and for some reason when using a point light shadow is not showing. This shadow problem is with point light only. when using spot light and parallel light shadow is shows. But i like the point light in a specific situation. Im wondering is there a setting im missing why my point light is not casting shadow. Thanks.

Did you copy the video file to the publish folder location?  If not, the video might still be sitting in whatever folder on your hard drive that you linked to and therefore be inaccessible to anyone but yourself. Previewing the content on your own machine will be fine, but as soon as you upload everything to another location, the link to your video is broken.
It's a common misunderstanding that if you tell Captivate about a video file you want to have play in your project that Captivate will kindly copy it into your publish folder for you.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  You need to manually copy the file to the publish folder and make sure the link you specify to it is a relative link.  If you copy it to the same folder location as the published SWF, then you can just use the video filename as your relative link.

  • Pre-composed layers not consistantly casting shadows?

So. I've been trowling through th interwebs for an answer and it appears a lot of people have come accross similar issues yet I am still to solve my little hiccup.
I have a bunch of 3D layers sitting on a 3D plane. Everything was going swimmingly until I animated these layers in individual pre-compositions, when all the shadows disappeared. All shadow settings are set correctly, lights are in the right places, layers are separeted on Z axis and there are no effects on anything.
I'll include some images so you get the gist:
For some reason, 1 shadow is working. i've checked all the settings and nothing seems to be different between them.
Here's a shot of the stats on the working comp:
And one of a non-working comp:
Now the pre-comps are no longer interacting with the ground at all. You can see the working one in the background is hanging out half way through the floor where as the front characters should be doing the same but aren't.
And finally, for some reason, at the 7second mark, it suddenly works again!?
Now, nothing changes at the 7 second mark, the camera and lights are in exactly he same place. None of the figures have moved, no comps have ended. what on earth is happening??
    Can anyone help me?

what do you mean by toggling the visibility?
They all have masks on them that fade them in however the originals had masks when they were just straight illustrator layers and the shadows worked fine then too.
Heres an in-comp image of the timeline. there's not a whole lot going on and again, nothing at 7seconds.
Also, here is a picture of the only comp within this comp that gets close to that 7 second mark. Again, nothing happens.
All the character comps are set up the same so problems should be consistant across the board but again, one in the background of the first image i posted works yet none of the others. i've even duplicated this layer and the duplicates don't work.

  • How can I print  the figures (text) in a chart WITHOUT a cast shadow?

    hi all,
in charts (line, column, etc.) i want display the figures (plott points) without cast shadows. Although the cast shadow option in the format bar isn´t aktiv, there is always a lighlty cast shadow when i´m printig the document and in my opinion it looks bad.
isn´s it possible to print the figures (text) of a column chart without a cast shadow? btw: the same effect in pages.
    thx a lot

    Hi rudiRocket,
    Welcome to Numbers discussions.
Yes I see what you're talking about, never noticed it. To remove the shadow I tried numerous fonts but, still the shadow. Let's hope someone else has a better answer. Be aware folks on these Discussion boards are, as yourself end users not Apple employees.
In the mean time please read the below instructions:
Send feedback directly to the Numbers team for enhancement requests: at the top of your screen to the right of the blue Apple please click "Numbers" > "Provide Numbers Feedback". Explain in detailed what you've found. This makes your request known to the Numbers team directly; don't expect to hear back from them. I've sent many as well.
Let's hope the next version of iWork incorporates many of the requested enhancements.
Thank you in advance for doing that.
Again, welcome to Numbers Discussions, have fun here.
    Sincerely,

  • Why do I get a lined pattern when casting shadows with a Point light?

    Hello,
For some reason I am getting a weird lined pattern on my composition. It only happens when using a Point light with Cast Shadows on (see image below.) It's almost a wood effect and not one I particularly want. I have found that altering the shadow map resolution only seems to change the pattern of the lines, but apart from that I have no idea how to get rid of it!
    Cheers
    Kristian

    Hi Coconutzor1,
It only has a Position and Orientation effect on it, with material options (cast shadows: on, light transmition: 50%, accepts shadows: on, accept lights: off). It is also a 3d layer, if that matters. It sits in a Composition that has collapse transformation on, with a camera, a null object to control the camera and a point light with cast shadows on... I only ever see the weird lines when the cast shadows on... so I guess it must be something to do with that?

  • Mirror, Cast Shadow,(Motion) Blur, Extrude Layer Styles

Layer styles are useful because of their parametric and their non-destructive natures.
I'd like to suggest new layer styles, of commonly used effects, that would help to automate lenghty tasks.
Mirror would create a reflection of the layer that fades with distance, it is commonly used in the products pictures of a famous computer /music player/phone manufacturer, and is even available as a word art in Powerpoint! Another common name for that effect is "wet floor".
Proposed settings would be to be able to select the direction (bottom by default), the angle of the reflection, the starting point of the reflection (so that the object/layer can appear to be floating in the air above the reflecting surface), the distance/curve of the fade, maybe an option to desaturate, lighten/darken, and/or blur with distance) There could also be an option to increase/decrease the width of the reflection. An additional eye candy would be to be able to distort the shadow with a map, for effects like waves, but we are way over in the cliché mode...
Cast Shadow would be very similar to the mirror effect, and would simulate the shadow casted by a light placed behind the object/layer. It would use most of the controls found on the Mirror layer style, or it would be available when one desaturates the mirror effect.
Motion Blur would create the effect of a displacement of the layer. It should be able to create the lenght of the blur, a start fade (so that the whole object/layer is not blurred, but only part of it). The fade could have two settings: flat or parametric. Flat would blur based on a gradient, while parametric would fade the blur according to a fixed distance to the edges of the layer. It would be very useful to be able to create a path that the blur would follow, but I'm not sure about the best interface: on image, or in a dedicated widget.
Blur would be a simple blurring routine, that would alleviate the need to create smart objects, and use smart filters.
Extrude could be the equivalent of creating step and repeat copies of a layer/object. It would create nudged copies of the layer simulating a third axis.
Controls would be: angle, distance, fade, where the copies become desaturated, blurred, and/or would have lower opacities.
I hope that other users will chime in with proposed refinements, or additional (useful and feasible) layer styles they'd like to see.

    I like these Pierre.
    Also
Noise - at the moment its possible to use Pattern Overlay and generate patterns to put grain texture and noise into layers. But a layer style with the correct parameters, grain size, blur, intensity, saturation (Saturation applies to the saturation of the noise not the image), would be useful.
This brings me back to  feature request made about a year or so ago, that it woud be possible to sample overall image 'noise'or 'grain' and to apply this to areas. It would use image analysis tecniques, although Im not sure yet what these would be -   to create an 'average' grain structure for the existing image (probably the base layer but this could be redefined). This would mean that any bad retouching (blurring or image softening) could be more easily salvaged, and would also mean that its easy to do much more destructive editing, more freely on an image than before, without the worry of banding on output.
If I think of any others I'll post them

  • LIGHT DOESN'T CAST SHADOWS.

hi i have a few layers, a camera, and an ambient light. i turn cast shadows on in every layer but it doesn't do anything. i did the same thing a long time ago on another video and it worked, but that was the one and only time it did, what am i doing wrong?

    > i turn cast shadows on in every layer but it doesn't do anything.
the light must also be set to cast shadows but Ko is correct, ambient lights do not have that option.
the online help system will explain it all to you.
Double-click a light layer in the Timeline panel or select the layer and choose Layer > Light Settings.Casts Shadows Specifies whether the light source causes a layer to cast a shadow. The Accepts Shadows material option must be On for a layer to receive a shadow; this is the default. The Casts Shadows material option must be On for a layer to cast shadows; this is not the default.Light Type Parallel emits directional, unconstrained light from an infinitely distant source. Spot emits light from a source that is constrained by a cone, like the spotlight used in stage productions. Point emits unconstrained omnidirectional light, like the rays from a bare light bulb. Ambient creates light that has no source but rather contributes to the overall brightness of a scene and casts no shadows.

  • Motion 3's lights cast shadows?

Can Motion 3's lights casts shadows? It doesn't appear that they can. This seems like such a basic function. I can't believe they would go to all the trouble to put in some great new technology and leave out the basics of that new technology. It would be nice if the cameras had a DOF function as well but understandable that it's not there.
    Thanks
    Brandon

You're right. My apologies. "Basic" wasn't the correct word.I guess "typical" might be more along the lines I was implying. I just seemed odd that Apple ( who I couldn't have more respect and admiration for ) would spend so much time creating this incredible 3d functionality ( and add lights ) and leave out "cast shadows." I hope that shadows along with depth of field will be considered in newer upgrades. I would gladly shelve my After Effects.
    Thank you,
    Brandon

Good gracious.  It sounds like you were able to rotate the canvas a more or less exact multiple of 90° or you'd have spotted that it was skewed.  I just tried it using the r shortcut, and while it is doable, it is not particularly easy to rotate the canvas to a point where it could fool you.  What does surprise me, is that while the Options bar shows the degree of rotation while the r key is depressed, I could see nothing on the UI to tell me that the canvas was rotated.  That's something that you might want to start a thread on the Photoshop Feedback page.

Anyway, Escape is the usual way to cancel rotate canvas.

  • Adjustment layers not opening mask anymore

On my laptop I choose an adjustment option and it creates a new layer and layer mask.  On the imac it only creates the layer with the adjustment.   I have to manually add the mask.
I can't find a preference or setting or anything to get the two to behave the same way.
    Regards,
    Kelly

Inconsistent from Photoshop UI as well as from Actions.  And becase I know what will cause them to fail. I can create actions and scripts that I know will work no matter how they are set. The step will work the same way no matter which way the options are set.
For example disable add layer mask you wrote you have no problem doing that.  Do a Ctrl+A (select all) then add an levels adjustment layer to the current layer. You will find that the levels adjustment layer is added with a layer mask.  Photoshop will work that way in actions and from its UI.   So I can record and add adjustment layer and know for sure  a layer mask will be added no matter how a user set the fly-out option.     I can also use Photoshop menu Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Type.  And in its dialog I can Check  use previous layer to create clipping mask.  The Adjustment layer will be clipped no matter which way the fly-out option is set.
These options breakes  Photoshop original design they are bad options and their implementation is poor. Actions and scripts can not set these options. Scripts can not find out how they are set either. You write Plug-ins do you add adjustment layers in any of them?
Without using these bugs automating adjustment layers is hit and miss. You would not know the state of the adjustment layer you would not know if you had to add a layer mask or modify or replace the existing mask.  You would not know if the adjustment layer applied to all lower layer or just the previous layer.
Its a good thing you don't use such action for they could  have problems....

  • AE CS5 crash when cast shadows turned on?

    System.
    i7 @2.8ghz
    9gb ddr3
    2x 1tb HDD

    Adobe Master Collection CS5
I was finishing up a 3d product box in AE and once I turned on "cast shadows" under material options, AE crashes. Then when I open the project, if I try to do anything with the layers or timeline, it crashes. The error makes no sense to me, unless the 2nd part is irrelevant.
    first I get
After effects error: crash occurred while invoking rendering plug-in "AE_OpenGL"
    Then
after effects error: Crash in progress. last logged message was <8852) <ASL.ResourceUtils.GetLanguageIDFromRegistry> <0> Unable to obtain the User 'Language' registry key at: Software\Adobe\AfterEffects\ defaulting to 'en_US'.
If I delete the layers or turn off "cast shadows" everything works fine.
Any ideas? This is the ONLY time I have had AE crash on my system.

Have you installed the most recent updates?
Do you have OpenGL rendering enabled for previews? If so, turn it off. (See this page for information about troubleshooting OpenGL issues.)
