Layers, or what?

Very frustrated. Using CS4 on Win7 32 bit. I'm creating a newsletter. When I try to put a text frame (on it's own layer) over a colored frame (on it's own layer), the text disappears. Something is going on with the document. I can create a new doc and perform this in a flash. Create a text frame on top of the color area...piece of cake. I have a lot ot time on the newsletter so far. Would rather not start over. Someone must have an answer.
Thanks,
Jack

Thanks a lot!
It wasn't the text wrap, but you idea made me do something that worked, but wasn't paying attention as to what exactly it was. But one of the frames was the wrong type. It was graphic or text and should have been the other. When I changed that I could see the text and it's frame on top of the color layer. I'm new at InDesign, but know how layers work and the difference between a text and graphic frame. Funny how you can look at something for so long and now see it. Even after you think you've checked all menus and right clicks!
That's a load off. Thanks again!!

    16bit? Pixels extending beyond the canvas? (from a crop with delete unused pixels turn off).  Have you previously been saving PSD files?
    IME you sometimes have to tell Photoshop that the first save of a session is JPG, and it remembers from there on.  The way to 'tell' Photoshop that JPG, or PDF, or PNG etc are now your preferred format is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on that format in the Save As drop down list.  So long as the file does not have parameters that your chosen format does not support, then this should work for you.
    [EDIT]  Just noticed that you did include 'Crop' in the subject line.  Do you have 'Delete cropped pixels' checked?

  • I am tryin to convert AI files to PSDs and am getting them as one layer in the end. I think the problem is all of my sub layers. What is a quick solution?

    I keep getting a flat psd.

    Select File > Export and select Photoshop as the file type. In the menu that appears set your color mode and resolution preferences per the file you have, but make sure you select Write Layers and don't have Flat Image selected.
    if you're still getting a single flat image in Photoshop you haven't separated each object to it's own layer in Illustrator. The first image shows a file which has multiple objects but they're all contained in a single layer.
    Clicking on the layer and selecting "Release to Layers (sequence)" will then move all the shapes to their own layer.

    not that I would know, but what you can do instead is group those 5 layers (CTRL+G), add the adjustment layer as the topmost layer in the group and set the group's blending mode to "normal". The adustment layer is then only applied to the layers within the same group.

  • Batch: Open Bridge 'Stacks' as layers in PS CS5 + run action. Is this possible with script??

    I posted this topic a couple of days ago - I didn't know about this forum/group so the thread appears in Photoshop Scripting and Bridge Windows. I haven't found a solution on those forums - can any one here help?
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/880777?tstart=0
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/880779?tstart=0
    I would like to automate part of my workflow that involves opening stacked images (in Bridge CS5) as layers in Ps CS5 and running an PS action that composites the layers and processes the image. Something similar to 'Process Collection' in Bridge CS5 only with my own action instead of merge to HDR/Panorama.
    Apparently this is possible with Mac 'Automator' - is there anything I can do in Windows? I don't have any experience with writing scripts, but have friends that can help. Can someone tell me if its possible and point me in the right direction please?
    This needs to be a batch process. I know how to open images as layers from Bridge so that I can manually run the PS action - I would like to automatically process lots of images in this same way.
    To clarify, the script if possible will need to
    1) find first stack (in Bridge [in selected folder])
    2) open as layers in PS
    3) run PS action
    4) save and close (as psd preserving layers)
    5) find next stack in Bridge (selected folder) and repeat.
    By 'stack' I mean a set of similar files (for instance same scene -2EV, 0EV, +2EV)
    Bridge's 'Process Collection' feature is great because it very cleverly recognises similar images (I think you have to stack them first) opens them and either processes them into a hdr or panoramic image. Instead or hdr or pano, wouldn't it be great if you could run your own action.
    Bridge's Image Processor is fantastic at opening a batch of individual files and running your own processing action, but it won't open groups of images ('Stacks' or sets) as layers.
    What I need is basically a hybrid of the two.

    In case you miss my late append in the other thread you may want to look at the auto collection script that ships with the Bridge and use it as a base for what you want to do. You may also be able to automat the creation of your stacks if their time stamps are close. The Auto Collection Script night now does two types of stacks  HDR and Panoramas.  You may be able to modify it to do a third stack type. You stack type and use your stack processing process instead of mearge to HDR or PhotoMerge.
    From Bridge help:
    The Auto Collection CS5 script in Adobe Bridge assembles sets of images into stacks for processing as high dynamic range (HDR) or panoramic composites in Photoshop CS5. The script collects images into stacks based on capture time, exposure settings, and image alignment. Timestamps must be within 18 seconds for the Auto Collection script to process the photos. If exposure settings vary across the photos and content overlaps by more than 80%, the script interprets the photos as an HDR set. If exposure is constant and content overlaps by less than 80%, the script interprets the photos as being part of a panorama.
    Note: You must have Adobe Bridge with Photoshop CS5 for Auto Collection CS5 to be available.
    To enable the Auto Collection CS5 script, choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Adobe Bridge CS5.1 > Preferences (Mac OS).
    In the Startup Scripts panel, select Auto Collection CS5, and then click OK.
    Select a folder with the HDR or panoramic shots, and choose Stacks > Auto-Stack Panorama/HDR.
    Choose Tools > Photoshop > Process Collections In Photoshop to automatically merge them and see the result in Adobe Bridge.

  • Help,Layers changing position when grouped.

    I imported a layered JPEG image from Photoshop into Motion 3 (each layer together made up a single image)
    When trying to group some of the layers in motion, the grouped layers alter their position (i.e appear dislodged from the single image.)
    Is there a way i can group layers together without changing their position?
    I've tried holding the Cmd key when grouping (as suggested in the release notes) but that did not work.

    Hi Andy
    Sorry for the late reply.
    What I’m trying to do is to import an image that I cut up into layers Photoshop (like a jigsaw puzzle) and then import that layered Photoshop file into motion.
    The goal is to hopefully create a smashed pane of glass effect, with the image. (you know.. “smash” the image into the created pieces (layers) and have them fly towards the viewer, then reverse animated media so that it forms one image again)
    I got as far as importing the picture as a whole into motion with all the layers creating what looks like a single image. But as soon as I group a number of the layers that form the image together, those grouped layers become dislodged from the whole picture.
    I’m going to try playing with the anchor points as you suggested, and hopeful it may fix it.

  • Wont import with layers from AI

    Hi, I am a newbie at this, but I didnt think it would be this hard, I need to get all the layers to import from AI to AE, this seems simple even to me so I dont understand why I am here about to kick my computer over this,I've done some research and found out that not all my layers are top layers but instead sublayers, but the problem is that they are text layers so I cant just open a new layer and a text box on each layer since i want the letters to keep their position .Someone please help SOS. Also any tips for a newbie in both AI and AE are appreciated the only experience I have is with photoshop but AI text functions are much better. Thank you.

    As I understand your problem you have some text areas in Illustrator and you want to break up the text into layers and not disturb the position. Probably the easiest way to do this would be to convert your text layers to outlines, then release to layers, then drag the released layers to the top so they are all first tier layers, then import as a composition.
    If it's not individual letters you want to put on a separate layer, but words, then you can keep the text layers, just type and position each word on a separate layer. There is no handy way to break apart individual words in Illustrator and distribute them on separate layers without converting the text to outlines.
    Another option would be to move your illustrator text to Photoshop and maintain the text layers, then import the Photoshop file as a composition and then convert the text to editable layers and use text animators to break up the words.
    Unfortunately, I don't have any idea what you are trying to do with these text layers or what they look like so I can't give you specifics. Show us the illustrator file and explain what you are trying to do in detail and maybe we can be of more help.

  • Splitting layer into RGB layers in a group - newbie

    I'm a newbie trying to split a selected layer into multiple layers, each with only one channel enabled. What I mean into the script below, I’d like to do that same thing I do manually by going into Layer Style, in Advanced blending where it has the Channels R checkbox, G checkbox, B checkbox, for my R layer uncheck the G & B.
    I've got a start on grouping, copying the layers, renaming them as I'd like, but I don't know how to do the equivalent of what I described above.
    What I have so far...
    var doc = app.activeDocument,
          currentLayer = doc.activeLayer;
    var group = doc.layerSets.add();
          group.name = currentLayer.name;
    var bLayer = currentLayer.duplicate(); // duplicate layer in target doc
          bLayer.name = 'Blue:' + currentLayer.name;
             currentLayer.visible =false;
    //somehow here  I’d like to do that same thing I do manually in
    //Layer Style, in Advanced blending it has
    //Channels R checkbox, G checkbox, B checkbox
    //for my R layer uncheck the G & B
          bLayer.move( group, ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND ); // move it
          doc.activeLayer = bLayer;
    var gLayer = bLayer.duplicate();
          gLayer.name = 'Green:' + currentLayer.name;
          gLayer.blendMode = BlendMode.NORMAL;
    //somehow here  I’d like to do that same thing I do manually in
    //Layer Style, in Advanced blending it has
    //Channels R checkbox, G checkbox, B checkbox
    //for my G layer uncheck the R & B
          gLayer.opacity = 100.0;
          doc.activeLayer = gLayer;
    var rLayer = gLayer.duplicate();
          rLayer.name = 'Red:' + currentLayer.name;
          rLayer.blendMode = BlendMode.NORMAL;
    //somehow here  I’d like to do that same thing I do manually in
    //Layer Style, in Advanced blending it has
    //Channels R checkbox, G checkbox, B checkbox
    //for my R layer uncheck the G & B
          rLayer.opacity = 100.0;
          doc.activeLayer = rLayer;

    I looked around and finally did this by creating actions and then calling the actions.  I then added a loop that loops around all selected layers, using what I found at:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1536677
    So with more research I answered my question.  Below is my script if others find it useful...
    #target photoshop
    alert("copying each layer in group with R, G, B layers");
    runMulti();
    // run();
    function runMulti(){
        var selLay = getSelectedLayersIdx();
        if( selLay.constructor != Array ) selLay = [ selLay ];
        for( var i=0; i<selLay.length; i++){
            multiSelectByIDx(selLay[i]);
            run();
    function run (){
    var doc = app.activeDocument,
            currentLayer = doc.activeLayer;
    // test script: what I really want loop around all of the layers in the doc, not just the active one
    // so I want to create a group for each of the original layers
    var group = doc.layerSets.add();
            group.name = currentLayer.name;
    var bLayer = currentLayer.duplicate(); // duplicate layer in target doc
            bLayer.name = 'Blue:' + currentLayer.name;
             currentLayer.visible =false;
            bLayer.move( group, ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND ); // move it
            doc.activeLayer = bLayer;
    //what the action "blue" does is in
    //Layer Style, in Advanced blending it has
    //Channels R checkbox, G checkbox, B checkbox
    //for my B layer uncheck the R & G
              app.doAction("blue", "Default Actions");
    var gLayer = bLayer.duplicate();
            gLayer.name = 'Green:' + currentLayer.name;
            gLayer.blendMode = BlendMode.NORMAL;
            gLayer.opacity = 100.0;
            doc.activeLayer = gLayer;

    Not really. CSS layout is certainly the right way to go but
    that needn't
    involve <div> tags, and almost certainly doesn't
    involve 'layers'. Read

    Try again without using layers. What's likely your problem is
    some
    absolutely positioned element is masking the link in IE.

  • Problem importing PSD (with multiple groups and layers) into After Effects. Help!

    I created a "comic strip" in photoshop (multiple rectangle shape layers, then various shapes within each box for each frame of the comic strip) that I want to import into AE. When I import it as a composition (to keep my layers), however, what appears is an simply a black image with white lines where the lines of the comic strip used to be. I checked the color modes, but they are both in RGB so I don't think that's the problem. Also, when I double click the cartoon strip composition, I can choose certain groups from the mini flow-chart at the top left and view those individual frames. However, I can't view the entire comic strip as a whole, which is necessary for my animation. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as I'm on a tight time constraint. Thanks!

    When I asked what version down to the last decimal, I meant it. After Effects version should start with 11, but we need the numbers after that too.
    And I understand that you want to pan between them, so just put all the different PSD's you import into the same comp and pan between them.

  • Can the stroke on type knock out specific layers but not others?

    I'm mainly an Id and Photshop person but I've been asked to do some maps for a publication we're putting together.
    I'm probably being fussy but I've come up against a question that I'm just unable to resolve with the knowledge I have. Searching on forums hasn't helped either.
    Anyway, this is what I've got:
    The grey background, type, stroke on type and the islands are all on different layers.
    What I want to end up with is the stroke on the type knocking out the black outline stroke on the islands but being invisible over the grey background, like so:
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    You can get that if you're willing to work with a duplicate of the country shapes.
    See:
    http://www.m-server.de/m_g/Knockout-cs5.ai
    All relevant appearances are applied at layer level. Target the layer in the layer panel and see appearance panel for the options.

  • Moving layers into Group

    I am a web designer and have created a script that puts a browser UI around a Photoshop document. The action places several images and creates several text layers. What I want to do is place all the images then add them into a group called "BROWSER". I can do this and it works fine in CS3, but it fails to select all the layers in CS4 and CS5.
    I have tried several methods which all work in CS3, but not 4 and 5. I have selected the top layer, held shift and selected the bottom layer "Add Continuous", I have selected them individually with the "Add" modification (holding down the command). After I create the selection, I try and "Make Group from layers", however, in CS4 and 5 it only places the last layer in the folder.
    I have also tried creating the Group folder, naming it and moving the individual layers into the folder. The problem here is that when moving, PS uses the layer number instead of the layer name! For instance, I have a layer call "Page Title", when using the move command it uses it's raw layer number "layer 16" or whatever.
    So sorry for the wall of text. Can anyone offer any insight? I am downloading the trial of CS5 to see if that makes a difference.

    Are all the layers visible?? I just tried recording an action in CS5 and had no problem.  I create a new document white background layer and added 6 layers. I targeted the middle layer and then recorded this action
    Alt+,   (Target bottom visible layer in this case the background)
    Alt+]   (Target next visible layer up in the stack in this Layer 1)
    Shift+Alt+. (Select continuously up the stack to the upper most  visible layer 6 layers with there visibility off between will also be selected)
    menu Layers>New>Group From Layers (Create new group named it test  and the layers were collapsed into the new group named test)
    stopped recording
    I then went back into the history palette to before the group was created where I had the 7 layers.  I played the action and it worked. Went back in time again and added layers till I had 100 layers on top of the background layers. I turned the visibility of some layers off. As long as the background layer and the layer above it as well as the Top layer visibility was on the action worked.  All bets are off it the visibility of any or those three layers are off.  The Action will fail.

  • Photoshop Question Layered File

    Hey, I have a question. I have never had a client ask me this but he told me if he paid me for a ad can I give him the layered file after? He need to make banners and large format printing...I have google up what is layered file, and it doesn't seem to give me the answer. I am wondering if he meant like editing the photo with tranparents background that is by itself and not paste on the ad? or if he mean when I finished the ad and save as it is and not flatten the layers?

    What you client wants is the file not flattened, so he can avoid paying you to do the banners. If you give him the unflattened file, but sure to charge more than you would for the flattened one, because you are giving him not just a finished ad, but all the pieces to create new works from it.
    And, of course you can't legally give him any fonts you used, so rasterize any text layers before handing it over.
