Layers Palette problem

I'm new to Photoshop and I'm having trouble with layers. When I create a document I see it show up in the Layers Palette. No problem. However when I crear a second document to be added to the first layer, it shows up in a new Palette and I loose the first Palette. I must be missing a setting somewhere. Help!... I'm snowed.

I think you misunderstand how this works. Documents are documents and layers are layers. Creating a new document does not create a new layer in another document. That would only be the case if you created a smart object using Layer --> New --> Smart Object from File or similar commands. In that case the smart object would be a nested/ linked document that is used as a layer in the parent document. If you want to create new layers, use the respective functions within the document itself.

  • Photoshop CS4 layers palette too wide problem!

    http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6828/swatchesld2.jpg
The Photoshop CS4 layers palette is too wide and distorts the layout of the default color swatches palette when docked on the same column. And I don't want to have to put the color swatches palette anywhere else but the same column. Can the layers palette be fixed so that it can be as narrow as the other palettes, so it won't cause a conflict with the swatches layout?

As for the rescalability of panels I think this is more of a Windows issue, but even on mac these are nowhere near as well designed as they were.
Panel and UI design issues are now unfortunately more complex than just to do with Photoshop. The whole Creative Suite is now unified to some extent in the way it handles panels. Part of these problems stem from the fact that Indesign and Illustrator's concerns are quite different to those of Photoshop. Partly because the designers of these two applications have introduced a great swaithe of additional panels, which now need to be accomodated. Hence the panel buttons, and poorly docking panels.
The design of The Creative Suite interface now seems much more influenced by Flash Web design, and Windows OS. Unfortunately with flashing buttons, icons, and distracting transparency whenever you move anything, Photoshop appears on the surface much more complex than it needs to. This surface complexity will lead to further misguided accusations of "bloat".
Photoshop CS and CS2 in my humble opinion, had much more "solid" and well designed panel (or palette) interfaces. Although here and there there have been one or two useful additions to the overall UI, including more readily accessible workspaces, tiling, and obvious clickable icons for people who can't deal with keyboard shortcuts.

  • Layers palette disappears when I click on my project

I looked but can't find a help reference that addresses this problem.
The layers palette disappears everytime I click on my project. I want it to stay visible, without having to click F7, or go to Windows...Layers every time! How do I tell it to stay visible? It used to, and now it doesn't.
    Thank you!
    Rebecca

I just figured it out (several hours later).
I had to drag the tab off the palette and onto the desktop and there it is!!
Sorry for the bother. Thanks for the ideas, though.

  • Mask layer not visible in layers palete

I have a strange problem, when I apply any kind of mask to a layer in motion 3, the mask icon shows up on the layer to which it was applied in the layers palette, but the mask layer does not show up underneath the layer to which it was applied, thus i can't select the mask to adjust the controls of the mask, I can only toggle it on and off,
I would assume this is a simple user error, but for the life of me I can't find a "show mask layer" setting anywhere,
any insight on this problem would be hugely appreciated.

the disclosure triangle for the entire group is twiddled, showing my layers and any added effects, but for some reason the only thing that shows the presence of a mask is the small square icon on the video layer, but as there is not layer beneath the video layer to click on to adjust mask controls... i have been watching m3 tutorials and the mask always creates a layer in the palette when activated, but for some reason it's not with mine...

  • Layers palette disappears in photoshop cs5

My layers palette disappears in photoshop cs5 (64 bit and 32) any time I click on another tab such as histogram or info. It also disappears after PS opens and CS live starts. The layers tab is still there but the layers themselves go away. I can get them back by clicking on the tab. A minor problem but is starting to get real aggravating as it disrupts workflow. I tried Ctrl+alt to reset. Doesn't help. Uninstalled Creative Suite Production Premium CS5 with the remove preference box checked at least 8 times as well as using the Adobe Creative Suite cleaner tool. I have gone as far as removing EVERYTHING Adobe on my machine and deleting every adobe reference in the registry, every file with the Adobe name on it. If it had Adobe on it it was deleted.Cleaned and defraged the drives and registry. My Premiere Pro also has problems with the start up screen. I just cannot get a clean install of CS5 no matter what I have done, short of wiping my hard drive. Any ideas?

  • 8800GT palette problems?

I just received my 8800GT upgrade for my "original" Mac Pro. I had seen a couple of instances of the palette getting "screwed up" after a long period of time, which I thought might be a problem with heating (my 1900XT had all sorts of problems). Looking over the posts here, I saw a number of people with the exact same problem, a green-cyan color showing up in lines around the screen.
However, the problem seemed to go away and I hadn't seen it again. Until just now. My screen saver kicked in and when I shook the mouse to wake it up again, the palette problem was back.
Can anyone else with an 8800 confirm or deny this problem? I'm on a 1 GB dual 266 Mac Pro.

    Icon page view:
Not that I want the image of the icon to actually change/scale in size....I visually see no page icons in my palette. The only way I can see the page icon is if I drag the bottom right corner all the way across my screen. Then they appear on the right hand side of the palette. If I only have the palette open half an inch or so it looks like I have no pages in my document.
    Snapping closed:
This only seems to happen to my top dock. My other palettes in lower docks (stokes, color, swatches, etc...) do not snap closed.
I'll try to discribe the best I can since I don't know what is going on with my image. I have my palettes icon view only in 1 long skinny palette menu bar. Inside the long palette it is divided up. The top section is pages, links, layers. The next section is stoke, color, swatches, gradient. The next section is text, paragraph, chara styles, text wrap, glyphs.
I'm working in the icon only view of my palettes, but I've also tried icon and text view of the palettes. When I work with all palettes expanded they do not snap closed
    Preferences:
Tried deleteing preferences to fix problems with no aveil. Just have to wait for an update I guess. Just weird because I work with 4 other designers who have not have as much problems as mine recently. Should I consider reintalling?

  • Preview Tabe in layers palette in Apple Motion

I am new to Apple Motion. I bought a book to learn how to use it. In my layers Palette there is supposed be thumbnails of what is on my canvas right below something that says "Preview." I do not have "Preview" on my layers palette nor do I have thumbnails on it. How can I see them? Is there a setting I need to know about?
Thanks in advance for your help

  • Layers palette thumbnail sizes

Using PSE version 2. Works great! Love it! Except... I cannot change the size of the thumbnails in the Layers palette. They remains small no matter what I do. Mysteriously, when I open a file from Jan Kabili's PSE2 Course, all the thumbnails sizes work fine. I can make them small, medium, large. Now, what could be going on here? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!
    Jim Franck

    Greetings -
Thanks for your response (below) which caused me to do some
experiments with Photoshop Elements 2. This is what I discovered:
    • Opening a new file in any normal rectangular preset format, print
or Web-oriented, creates a Layers palette that functions as
advertised - that is, using the palette's contextual menu or the
"Palette Options" under the "More" button at the top of the palette
allows you to change the thumbnail size in the palette - small,
medium, etc. No problems. Eureka! and all that.
    • However, opening a new file as a preset "468 x 60 web
banner" (which is what I was doing when I encountered the "problem")
constrains the thumbnail in the Layers palette to small - no other
size options available. After a moment's thought, I realized that,
because the thumbnail for a banner is disproportionately wider than
it is high, allowing for a medium or large thumbnail while
maintaining the thumbnail's proportionality would necessitate a
palette that would be impractically large.
So, it's not a program flaw, it's a feature - how often this seems to
    happen.
Thanks for your note which prompted my investigation. I guess the
"take away" from this is that, if you ever get another similar
question, you might ask the inquirer if, by chance, they were working
on a web banner preset size when they encountered the difficulty.
Maybe they're as dense as I am and never made the connection.

  • Layers & Symbols problem

In CS4 I used to be able to drag a symbol from the symbol pallete, break the link, and with a tiff placed behind, easily make a clipping mask.
Now in CS5 it seems like whenever I use a new symbol and break the link it places it on a different layer (it doesn't say that it's a different layer but it uses a different color to show the guides as if it were on a different layer & when I go into the symbols palete the color to the left of the groups or layers within a layer is a different color). When I try to create a clipping mask with something on a different "layer", it doesn't work. The only way I can seem to get it to clip what I want is to go into the Layer's options & go to Flatten Artwork & then ungroup it. This is very time consuming. I know that I can now use the draw inside option to place the tiff into the former symbol, but this is a lot slower then how I used to do this.
So I guess my question is this: Is there any way when I break the link to a symbol to keep it from being put on a new "layer"? Or is there any way in general to keep there from being seperate "layers" within a layer?

I am surprised that no one else on the web seems to be complaining about this problem. All of the other 3 artists in my art department hate these new changes to the Layers palette. Perhaps we unlink symbols more then other people. Another issue I have found with the new "layers" is that if I have a symbol that I've broken the link for and it is part of a design, if I select the whole thing and try to copy it, it's copy stacks things in a different order. Again, the only way I've found to fix this is to go into the layer's pallete and select flatten artwork. It's frustrating especially because in the layer's pallete it says that everything is on the same layer, it just acts like it's on a different layer.

  • How do I keep layers from auto-expanding in the Layers Palette?

Hello all. I'm working on a rather complex piece of artwork in Illustrator CC with the latest Mac OS, with several objects on each layer.
Whenever I click an object, its layer in the Layers palette auto-expands, pushing all of the main layers off of the edge of the palette. I then have to click the little arrow to collapse the layer so I can see all of the other layers and (quickly?) get to the one I need.
I am using a Magic Trackpad (don't ask) so this task is particularly arduous, as the cursor is often somewhat difficult to maneuver when attempting to target small UI elements. My display height is only 1050 px, so naturally I would rather not make the layer thumbnails any smaller (25 px.)
Is it possible to disable or defeat the auto-expanding behavior? Any help would be kindly appreciated. Thanks!
    Edit placed in bold

Checking the Layers>Top Level Only boxes in the Layers Panel Options palette did not work to stop the triangles/arrows in the Layers palette from turning themselves down when an object is selected that is part of a sublayer.
(This is on Mavericks 9.1 using CS6.)
These two checkboxes are in the Thumbnails section of Layers Panel Options and does not affect the arrow animation on my Mac. I haven't been able to find any combination that stops this behavior, including changing the "Show Layers Only" checkbox.
FEATURE REQUEST:  Adobe, an OPTION for this please? We don't all work by targeting sublayers in the layers palette, especially those of us who spend most of our time pawing through someone else's work/setup.

  • How re-size layers palette when bottom not visible?

The bottom of my layers palette is below the visible part of my computer screen...becasue I am now working away from home on my laptop (and the layers palette is showing up the same size as it was when I last used Illustrator on my large monitor screen).  How do I re-size it, so I can use the items at the bottom of the palette?

Nope...tried that!  It does not seem to allow you to re-size it from the top.  You can make it more narrow from the sides and shorter via the bottom, but it doesn't seem to allow you to drag and re-size from the top.  But your other option DID work...thank you SOOOOO much!

  • Layers Palette help please

I've tried google and searching the forums here to no success. If there is an easy answer to this please link.
I have received a few rare documents that have a layer which does not behave or display like my experience says it should. The layer is a very complex object, like a brand logo, but no sub layers or objects display for it. I can select individual pieces of the layer and move them about like independent objects, but the selection is still on the layer. I've tried using both "Release to Layers" commands but have had no success.

What do you see if you go to the layers palette flyout menu>Palette options? Does it have Show Layers Only toggled on? Or are there other settings that make individual objects invisible? If so, change them.

  • "Blank" thumbnails in Layers Palette with white objects.

When working with completely "white" objects, the thumbnail in the layers palette is effectively "blank" (see attached sample).   Is there any kind of option or mode that will make those thumbnails a little more practical?  I often have to find a specific white letter behind a non-white letter--and sometimes they're nowhere near each other in the layer.  (Most often these are 'old' files that someone else created.)

While I can’t help make the Layers panel more informative for you, you might find the Transparency Grid helpful. Turn it on in the View menu, andchange the colours for the grid in Document Setup.

  • What is the button on the right in the layers palette?

Can someone tell me what the small round black dot/ button is in the layers palette? (next to Hayes Mansion Hotel) Nothing is selected in my file and I cannot figure out what this is indicating!!  Thank you! Jennie

To further what Steve said; just select the object and then look in the Appearance panel to see what Effect has been applied to the object.

  • Open my photos in CS6 and they don't show up (but show in layers palette)

When I open a photo in Photoshop CS6 I can see the photo in the layers palette but it doesn't show up on my screen to work on. The only way I can get it to show up is if I act like I'm going to close Photoshop. Then when it asks if I want to close I say "No". Then my photo shows up so I can work on it. Please help!

    Please read post #5 again:
You can disable that in Photoshop's preferences, under the Performance tab.
But you need to update your video card driver, preferably from the GPU maker's website (not Microsoft, and not the system builder).
