Layers Smart Objects Stack Modes (CS3/4 Extended)

Are any of the Stack Modes besides Median and Mean (Noise reduction) good for anything? Have any of you found a use for them?
Thanks!

If you don't recognize the statistical names on them - then they probably won't be of much use to you.
If you are doing statistical work on images, then you should recognize the names and they would be quite useful.

  • Show movement in area from 30m video, smart objects - stack mode - range - 90k frames

    Hey,
    So I have a real challenge and need help figuring out the logistics of how to get it to work sensibly.
    I'm trying to visually show the movement through a space (which will later be generated into a 3d form etc..)
    To do this I think the best way would be to use photoshops smart objects - Stack modes - "Range"
    A final image to show movement through the area.
    Lighter where people walk more often and darker where people walk less often
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photosho...44D6937Ca.html
    Range basically shows everything that has moved between the layers.
    If you import a video frames into layers in photoshop, make them a smart object and apply the range stack mode it shows peoples movement and where they walk.
    So thats what I'm going to do unless there is a better way to do this in something like after effects or premiere pro that I don't know about?
    - I've done the photoshop way before and it worked very well - but on a very small scale.
    I have a 30 minute video recording (considering longer but not sure if its viable), it was shot on a tripod and seems ok but can always do it again differently if needed!
    The video was shot at 1920 x 1080 50fps which with 30 minutes (1800 seconds) makes 90,000 frames total for the video.
    The problem
    I need the info from ALL the frames - any less and the movement is too 'choppy' and isn't very useful.
    So how can I make use of 90,000 frames/layers in a smart object for the range stack mode?!
    I heard photoshop has a layer limit of 8k.
    I have access to 6 high spec brand new mac pros (not 100% sure of the spec).
    I'm thinking the solution would be use scripts and break it down into manageable chunks then flatten then merge them together.
    Possible Solutions
    1. Merging frames from each second or few seconds and then blending - not sure what blend mode I would use and also not sure if it would affect results
    2. chop the image down into sections, process each section, flatten and merge together. for example split it into 4 quarters. - Don't think this will help, its more the limits in layers than anything else
    3. Find an alternative method to deliver the image such as after effects.
    on a side note I know I could have done a long exposure, done many before, but they don't really show movement, they simply blend the frames. The downside of long exposures for this exercise is that things could cancel each other out, for example; a man with a white top on walks past then a man with a black top walks past, these would cancel each other out to some degree.
    The Range smart stack mode is brilliant because it directly shows movement and people don't cancel others out.
    Help
    Where can you help?
    So basically if this is the correct way to do this then can anyone help with this and suggest any ways of breaking it down that wouldn't affect the final result?
    Someone that knows more of how range stack mode works.
    Correct me if I'm wrong with any of this and please let me know if you can help at all
    Thanks!
    Luke.
    Context
    For context the final thing has to be something that doesn't change in time, i.e. not a video but an image or model. This image will then be skewed a bit so its a plan view. It will then be used for another script in a 3d package like rhino which will create a number of points in space, the x and y axis being the location in plan view and the Z axis being the value of the pixel. I will then generate a solid form from the points and then smooth it out a lot so I should end up with a 3d wave model directly generated from the movement of people through the site. I will then architecturally design the form into spaces etc... This will form the surface of my final project
    Heres an example of the first 500 frames (500 frames limit on video frames to layers import)
    The footage isnt the best as I moved the camera slightly and the angle isnt amazing - ideally I want a plan view but will skew the final image to do this.

    But I have a concern that if I break it down to 300 images (6 seconds of footage) then stack then flatten the stack until its dont the whole 30 mins then use these flattened ones to create a new stack it would affect results as it will then be working with images like the above.
    That should be easy enough to test (if maybe not exactly proof) – for Range it seems to make no difference, for Variance it seems to do.
    Also why use 16 bit image mode?
    To reduce the accumulated effect of the necessary rounding of pixel values.

  • Smart object stack modes - in english please

    How do we make sense of these stacking modes?
    I tried the median technique to lose the disparate elements, nothing.
    Those others, how do we interpret the definitions for real world use?
    Thanks anyone.

    I tried but this is what I got:
    "There is no Adobe PDF viewer installed to view the selected file."
    So far, this is the most definitive item I have found,
    hence my questions:

  • CS3 - Bridge Smart Object image to CS3 & Lab Color

    I open an (NEF) image in Bridge, do some work, and open the smart object in CS3. When I go to Lab Color I get: “Changing modes can affect the appearance of smart objects. Rasterize smart object before mode change?” I don’t want this, correct?
    After I choose “Don’t Rasterize” this dialog window appears: “Merge layers before mode change?” I choose no.
    Within Channels (Lab Color) I go to delete “A” & “B” because I just want the Alpha Channel. However, I get “Flatten Layer?” and when I choose “No” I can’t delete “A” & “B.”
    Solution?
    ~ Much Thanks ~

    I should say I am trying to learn this software and stumbling through Mr. Kelby's 7 Point System book.
    I found my error.  I was highllighting the layers not clicking the eye icons off and on.
    Thanks for all who look.

  • LR 2.1 Unable to Open as Smart Object in PS CS3 due to swedish characters in folder name

    When I try to open a raw file from Lightroom 2.1 as a smart object in Photoshop CS3 and the folder contains swedish characters, like åäöÅÄÖ, it will not open at all -> PH starts up and presents a "Open As" dialog.
    It works fine when I open images that is in a folder only having english characters...
    As I read that some apostrophe-related problems were fixed in the 2.1 release I hoped that it included all special characters allowed in folder names... The same problem occurs in version 2.

    My problem might be of a similar origin.
    I have also posted it on a different thread http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6903c
    I use mostly Hebrew characters for Keywording (the file names are in English) after opening in CS3 and saving, the keywords are converted from Hebrew fonts to accented fonts like åäöÅÄÖ.
    This didn't happen in LR1 and does not happen if I use CS3 as my secondary editor (not using the new LR2 edit in CS3 functionality)

  • Smart Objects Problem : Templates : CS3 : WIN

    Hello,
    I am trying to create some reusable templates in Photoshop CS3 using Smart
    Objects. Basically I want to layout the page with some place-holder photos
    that are smart objects and then when I need to create a page simply load the
    template PSD, right-click on the smart object layer in the layers palette
    and choose replace contents. This seems to be possible and even works
    sometimes. However, a lot of times the size of the smart object images
    change.
    For example I could set a smart object place-holder image to be 4 x 6 -
    inches at 300 dpi, replace the image with another image and the size will
    then jump to some odd size. I even had it once go to 2 x 10 inches. I
    thought the whole point of smart objects was that I could replace the
    contents and it would be sized, etc. the same. Well that is one point of
    smart objects.
    Is there a bug? Could the fact that I have layer styles and rotation and
    resize transformations applied to the smart object be creating the problem?
    Any way around this?
    This is Photoshop CS3, Windows Vista, Quad Core Processor, 4GB of RAM, 8 TB
    of hard drive space.

    Are you perhaps changing the layer order, grouping or some clipping masks? As usual I'm not working with these features a lot and probably shouldn't advise ;-), but I could imagine that this would affect rasterization and how PS may want to update info that no longer is in the place where it expects... I'd also check the "Temp" directory (Documents and Settings\Rachael\Local Settings\Temp). Perhaps it's simply full and the programs are not able to update the temporary files.

  • Possible bug when opening NEF-images as Smart Objects in PS CS3?

    In architectural images I often apply lens corrections (Rotation, Distortion, vertical Transformation) to my RAW (NEF) images.
    When I open such an image in PS CS3 as a PSD all is fine, that means all the lens correction is applied.
    But when I open the same image in PS as a Smart Object the lens correction is not applied, i.e. PS shows the image with all LR-editing (such as color temperature, exposure, contrast, etc) except for the lens correction data.
    What is wrong here?
    I'm running LR 3.2 and PS CS3.
    Thank you for your input.
    ErnstK

    Thank you for your answers.
    It occurred to me - and Ian's post seems to confirm this - that PS CS3 is not fully compatible with LR3.2.
    When I chose <Edit in CS3> (to open the image as PSD) I get the message that my Camera Raw plug-in is 4.6 and it gives me the choice to <Open Anyway> or to <Render by LR>. I usually chose the latter and I assume that this is technically an Export.
    When I chose <Open as Smart Object> it just opens the image in CS3 without any dialog in between.
    I guess it's time to upgrade to CS5.
    Thank you all.

  • Import into photoshop as layered smart objects

    is there a way to import images into mulitiple images into photoshop as smart objects from bridge?
    Thanks

    I tried to using the ACR export setting: 'open as Smart Objects in PS' and
    hit done, revert to Bridge and with Tools - load to layers.
    It seemed the obvious route for me but it did not work sadly enough.
    However using the load to layers tools gives you the option to select the
    layers in the file and then convert to smart objects, only you have to do it
    one by one I'm afraid.
    is there a way to import images into mulitiple images into photoshop as smart
    objects from bridge?
    Thanks

  • SMART OBJECTS VANISH IN CS3 PHOTOSHOP

    ADOBE CS3 PHOTOSHOP/ ILLUSTRATOR WINDOWS XP
    I'm using a smart object in photoshop, I click to edit it in illustrator, make the changes and save but when I return to photoshop the Object is not updated and disappears from view leaving just a blank layer.
    I've never had this problem before but this weekend it's happened a few times.
    Can any one help???

  • Layers, Smart Object, or PSD?

    Hello
    I'm a casual user of CS3, and would like to do a large amount of editing of a JPG requiring many sessions and many saves.  How best should I do this?  Should I:
    1) Create a layer for editing; save the file each time I quit and not worry about image degradation?
    2) Create a smart object; is the smart object for this purpose?  A brief run-through on creating the smart object, and finally saving back as a JPG would help, thank you :-)
    3) Merely save repeatedly in Photoshop format, PSD, and not worry about image degradation?
    Thanks for your help!
    Pete291

    …would like to do a large amount of editing of a JPG
    You don't 'edit' a jpeg. No one edits a JPG. You edit an image. When the image is open in Photoshop, it has no format as such.
    JPG is a destructive, compressed format, PSD is not. When you save as PSD you lose no quality whatsoever. So if you have many saves, the last option is most probably the most sensible.

  • Update Modified Content (Linked layers / Smart objects)

    Hey guys,
    Is there anything in the API for handling the new Linked layers? (CC 14.2)
    Specifically, I want to be able to Update Modified Content iteratively to handle lots of nested links.
    It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional, as this is a very complicated task to do manually.
    Cheers

    Crude, but maybe this helps:
    // 2014, use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    var ref = new ActionReference();
    ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID("Dcmn"), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt") );
    var applicationDesc = executeActionGet(ref);
    var theXMP = applicationDesc.getString(stringIDToTypeID('XMPMetadataAsUTF8'));
    var theFiles = new Array;
    var theArray = theXMP.split("<stRef:filePath>");
    for (var m = 1; m < theArray.length; m++) {
    theFiles.push (theArray[m].slice(6,theArray[m].indexOf("</stRef:filePath>")));
    if (theFiles.length > 0) {alert(theFiles.join("\n"))};
    Edit: One problem, though: the list in the XMP metadata may not be up to date if the file has not been saved since the last linked SO has been placed or embedded.

  • Stack mode in Photoshop CS4

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to use the options 'layers - smart objects - stack mode'. However 'stack mode' is greyed out. I've read on a few forum posts that this functionality is only available with CS4 extended.
    Can anyone tell me if that's correct. And if so is there an upgrade route to allow me to get the extended version?
    Thanks
    Darryl

    You're welcome. If you choose to get CS6 you won't need to buy Lr again. If you do get Ps CC you will get Lr for free and free upgrades (Lr 5.7 and Ps CC 2014 15.0 currently).

  • Blend Mode doesn't hold in Smart Object

    Here's the scenario:
    I'm building a web page, lot's of layers and groups. I want to clean things up by converting some groups into smart objects.
    Here's the Problem:
    Within some of the group folders are layers with a blend mode assigned, like Darken. When I convert the group to a Smart Object the blend mode on those layers doesn't hold.
    Screen grabs:
    Hopefully these will make it clear in cas I haven't explained it well.
    Original with layers
    Group converted to Smart Object
    Bland mode applied to Smart Object
    I figured out why it happens, I want to know if there's a way around it other then don't do it.
    TIA,
    Mike

    Yep, another understandable feature by few who understand, but created by many users -  toy feature for web and print. It can either mean money or murder when handed these files from your bone head customer who assumes anything that can be created shall work with the greatest of ease because marketing told you so.
    Now that's progress intelligently planned.

  • AP2-Photoshop CS3 - Open as "Smart Object"

    Good evening,
    Users of Adobe Photoshop CS3 will know that there is a possibility in Adobe Camera Raw to open a RAW file as "Smart Object" (by holding down the shift key). This way one can easily copy the Smart Object, go back to Camera Raw, tweak the settings, and blend the two objects together.
    I am wondering whether anyone has found a solution in Aperture 2 to open an image in Photoshop as smart object...
    Thanks,
    Philipp

    you can't open a file from aperture as smart object in photoshop. but as you can assign your own shortcuts to all menu commands and functions in photoshop, why not create a shortcut to convert any image layer into a smart object? (photoshop menu: layers - smart object - convert to smart object). this way, it only takes you a press of a key, and you have your smart object.
    having said this, keep in mind, there is of course quite a different to raw files opened as smart objects through camera raw: if done with cr, the smart object lets you change the raw conversion again. aperture however renders a psd or tiff before sending it to photoshop. so even if you convert this to a smart object, you will not have access to the original raw file.

  • Edits to a JPG Smart Object  in a layered TIFF file:  DOES NOT Save to the originally placed file?

    When placing a JPG as a Smart Object (and even multiples) into a layered TIFF file:  If I open each layered Smart Object JPG, make changes as a JPG and SAVE the file, I expect the ORIGINAL SOURCE JPG file that was placed to also be saved- I thought that is the file I was editing!
    This SUCKS!  To capture my edits to the original individual files:  I now have to open each layed TIF file, Edit each smart object JPG and SAVE AS to overwrite the original and capture my changes?  Is this the way its always been- I don't think it has.  How can I edit a Smart Object file in a layered document and ALSO update the SOURCE file?

    You should edit the original jpg, and then replace the smart object. There is a utility that makes this easier, if you do many of these. Looks liek this
