Layers unavailable

I've tried to find an answer but it doesn't look like anyone else is having trouble with this. I downloaded the trial version of Photoshop Elements 9 because I wanted to see if it will do what I need, before I commit to purchasing it. What I need to do is work with layers, but there is no layers panel or palette. There is a 'layer' menu at the top, but everything in it is gray-shaded.
I hope someone can help me, thanks.

Try clicking the re-set button.
You need to open an image or create a blank document for the layer menu to become visible otherwise it will remain grayed out.
File >New >Blank File

Hello all,
I am new on this board, I did some research and couldn't find an answer to my problem. I hope you'll be able to help me !
I am used to work and design my projects with Illustrator CS4 and then to click on File >> Export >> Photoshop file >> Check the Write Layers options >> OK.
I don't know what I did with one of my file, but suddenly I can't check the option "Write Layers" whereas it worked fine few days ago...
I tried with other files I have and it works fine... but not with this new one...
Do you have any idea of what I did?
This file has 66 layers, and there are no nested groups (I read online that it could be the problem but it's not)...
I tried to remove all the layers except one and I still have this problem, I can only export it as a flat image...
Thanks for your help! I really need to export it as a photoshop file with layers.

I double check and my document is RGB and I want to export to RGB, so this is not the issue.

I attached an illustrator file I created using the one I am having a problem with. This is just an ellipse and a rectangle. I can't export it to a Photoshop file with the Write Layers option checked... any idea?

Photoshop cs5 says "Place" is unavailable when I try to batch process from bridge, does anyone know what's going on?

Bridge will no longer batch process an old watermarking action that i made it says "place" unavailable in Bridge with cs5, does anyone know why?

Can't Get Past Preview Unavailable for a PSD File

I know that Lightroom is unable to generate previews for PSD files if they haven't been saved with the Maximize Compatibility option. But, it seems that once you begin a preview for a folder Lightroom gets stuck in that mode even if you then go ahead and resave the file with the Maximize Compatibility option set to Always.
In a test just now I opened one of the problem files in Photoshop CS6 and saved it. Then I went back to Lightroom and tried to reimport the file but it still said Preview Unavailable. I tried toggling on/off a couple of layers and resaving but it still didn't help. So, next I actually tried making a change to the file and resaving. That still didn't work. I've tried exiting from the Import dialog in LR and restarting the import and even restarting Lightroom but nothing makes a difference.
If I save a new copy of the file in Photoshop (without changing any settings in my Photoshop preferences) Lightroom is able to show a preview and import the copy. So, the file itself is fine. In fact, it's just a simple 1MB file with a background layer and a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
I've found this same behavior with both LR 4 and LR 5 Beta.
I have a lot of PSD files that I've edited over the years in Photoshop. Now, I'm considering using Lightroom but if I have to create new copies of every one of my PSD files in order to see them in Lightroom I don't know if it's going to be worth the trouble. Is there any workaround?

TIFFs will hold everything that PSDs do.
That's nice to hear. However, I found that the Image Processor conversion doesn't work correctly in some cases. Here's one example. I have a file with a single image layer and which is a Smart Object. I applied a Blur Gallery Iris Blur to this object as a Smart Filter. After running the Image Processor what I got was a flattened file with no Smart Object and no blur filter. The filter effect was rasterized so it wasn't lost but the ability to edit further was.
And it gets worse. I have another file with a single Smart Object layer and a Nik Software Color Efex Pro filter applied. In this case, not only did it flatten the file, it didn't even render the effect correctly.
I played around with my preferences thinking that my Maximize Compatibility or TIFF layer-save options might be causing the problem. But, so far, I haven't been able to get the Image Processor to work correctly.
However, if I do the conversion manually I end up with a TIFF file that includes the Smart Object with Smart Filter intact. If I want to use these files with Lightroom I guess I'll have to convert each one manually.

What causes time remap to be unavailable

CS4
I don't know much about time remapping but I have used it long enough ago to have forgotten what ever I might have known.
I did remember setting Layer/time/timremap, but when I select a layer and try to do that the `remap' menu item is unavailable (greyed out). So what might cause that to not be available.
Its a still image layer where I used the CCScaterize effect. Does that prevent timemapping?

What are you trying to accomplish? Time remapping doesn't make sense for a still image.
If what you're trying to accomplish is remapping time on the result of the CC Scatterize effect, then precompose the layer with the effect and use time remapping on the precomposition layer.

Please help, simple requirement using Layers, there must be a solution?!

Hi, I am using a trial version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro, with a view to purchasing the program for several members of my staff. However, it does not seem to be able to do something fairly simple which I need.. unless someone can help please! I work with maps that come to me as pdfs, and I need to be able to add text items (with arrows) to these maps that are then visible only when certain layers are selected in the new pdf, so that the three sub-contractors I distribute our completed maps to can view either all the text/arrows we have added, or only the info relevant to them if they prefer.
We've tried saving three maps each with different info on then importing them as three new layers to the original map, but that doesn't give the functionality to interchange views and it's very time-consuming. We've tried using InDesign on trial version but the layers are messy in the exported pdf (adds obsolete layers as a 'feature', the administrator in the InDesign forum said). I've experimented with the pre-flight functions in Acrobat Pro but found them not so user-friendly. Is there a way to select some text items and export them to a tiff with transparent background, then import these as a new layer perhaps? Or please someone tell me I'm being stupid and this was addressed in a simple function since Acrobat v2?!

Thanks all, I do appreciate these feedbacks, but I am struggling to understand the analogy between a car and iPad. When buying a car in a different location, you are adviced of all the features and then you take a decision if you are okay with it or not. But this was not the case with the iPad. I only found that out after a while being that it is my first iPad. Of course I will not make this same mistake again but I find it challenging that there are no provisions for correct this facetime issues for none residents.
I assume as you have all continiously stated that I may not make a difference on this as a lone voice but if Apple can consider making it possible for none residents or insisting that this is explicitly mentioned at the point of sales in Duabi for Apple products then it begins to be fair. In the car example, you are at least sure that certain feutures are unavailable and do not realize this after the purchase is done and you are back to your home country.
I also think saying "Dubai iPad" might not be correct as I always believed I was dealing with Apple product which out to give same level of satisfaction accross the globe....
I am a frequent traveller and really it would not have been inconveniencing not to buy this iPad when I did as I could have bought it from the UK, US or SA.....but just thought iPad was iPad everywhere.
Again why do I really have to buy another one? These cost money. And I do not have a shop to sell it as a non-facetime ipad. I would have expected apple center to receive these ipads and replace them or correct them.....
I am just listing this out incase the Apple team can see some sence in what I am saying. There are a number of ways this current situation would have been avoided for people like me.

Unable to link layers in Photoshop CS

I have Photoshop CS. In the box showing the layers I've made, there is no longer a small checking box to the left of each enabling me to link a layer with others. If I hold the cursor over the looped "link" symbol at the bottom, an "unavailable" symbol appears. Does anyone know how I get the link boxes back please? Thanks David5119

Thank you. I didn't know I could select more than one layer by holding down the Ctrl key and that, when I do that, the link symbol appears. Don't know at what point the link check boxes disappeared as they were certainly there originally; maybe when I reinstalled Photoshop for some reason. But a big thank you - your advice worked. It sounds like you have an photoshop version cs2 or newer.
To link layers in photoshop cs2 and newer versions, the layers you want to link need to be selected first in the layers panel and then press the link icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

When opening Lightroom files as layers in Photoshop, the layers load, then disappear

I am trying to open as layers in photoshop, but the layers disappear after the last one loads.

Confused about layers DW CS4

In several books on "how to build web pages" they mention layers as a good thing to use...
But... it seems that the option is grayed out and not available... From Insert > Layout Objects I have options to insert DIV Tags; AP Div: then some Spry stuff.. but the "Layout Table" and "Layout Cell" are grayed out and thus unavailable.
Am I doing something wrong, some other menu choice, or is there a preference setting I have messed up.
And, speaking of messed up when I first started playing with DW the properties dialog box would pop up automatically... now I have to select it and then it stays up even if the page is closed

The function breakApart() is currently unavailable!?

I have a JSFL command that I'm working on. On occassion I get
this error
The function breakApart() is currently unavailable.
When I use this, fl.getDocumentDOM().breakApart();
Two issues I see. First, it shouldn't be unavailable, I have
selected all already and it should be able to breakApart something.
Secondly, I can't test if it is available. I guess there are three
things, third, I can't recover from the error, try/catch does
nothing.
Is there a way around this? I've already spent 3 hours trying
to figure this out. It does seem to only happen when breaking apart
text. But has also occurred with just shape objects. what's odd is
I can perform the operations in flash when not scripting it without
any problems.

I found a solution to the 'breakApart() not available'. You have to explicitly lock all other layers other than the one you want, and explicitly select the frame:
use a utility function like 'lockAllLayers' to lock all layers
var tl = fl.getDocumentDOM().getTimeline();
function lockAllLayers(isLocked)
    for(var i=0;i<tl.layerCount;i++)
        tl.layers[i].locked = isLocked;
unlock the one you need
     tl.layers[i].locked = false;
explicilty select the layer and frame you want:
timeline.currentLayer = 2;
timeline.currentFrame = 3;
only THEN can you actual set the element you want to select, or use document.selectAll()
You can check if breakApart() is available by using an if statement like
if(document.selection && document.selection.elementType == "<whatever you're looking for here>")
      document.breakApart();

Auto layering

Hi, i am looking for a program that will automatically pull layers or objects from a PDF based on grayscale, color and texture patterns. I have not used illustrator and the trial version seems unavailable. I am wanting to be able to open a document and pull all of the text of a certain font type as well as different opacities and colors...basically i need it to "select all" of a font color or gray-level in order split the documents apart rapidly without having to manually lasso each different object. Does illustrator have this feature?

Using Edit >> Find/Change you can globally change fonts, but this feature will not select them in illustrator for you.

Operation Not Allowed, Out of Memory, Display Unavailable, and PS nightmare

Having all of the above titled issues on a project in FCP HD5. Everything was going fine until I started doing some light compositing. I have a regular DV sequence which is fine and then I have some .psd files imported. The .psd files are all only 1 layer with certain areas transparent to reveal whatever is in the video track below. No alpha channels or anything like that.
Originally the .psds had superfluous layers and when I had this problem I turned them all into 1 layer and cut down the file size. No difference. I trashed the prefs and repaired permissions as discussed in Shane's tips. I also made the sequence offline and then re-linked all my media which does work. But then eventually when manipulating the .psd media I get the "display unavailable error" again. It seemingly happens any time I try to dissolve between two .psds or even the media in the tracks below.
Fortunately I can keep getting back in and getting to a good point (I'd go berserk if the file corrupted, even if I do have it backed up), but I can't move forward. Is there a solution for this? Maybe there is something I am neglecting to do in prepping the .psds that's causing them not to play nice. Any help is welcome and appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for replying Jim. Indeed everything is in RGB mode, and they are all 720x540, D1/DV NTSC pixel aspect ratio.
What I have tried now is saving them all as TIFFs with transparency. This seems to have done the job of allowing me to transition and not get the above errors, though one of my TIFFs didn't preserve the transparency. Weird.
FCP also rescales them from 720x540 to 810x540 on import. The doesn't take up all of action safe to fill the entire frame. Why is that? Its easy enough to scale it once in FCP, but I'm sure I am doing something wrong in PS. Any further help you can give from here is great! TIA!
