Laying out photos to create a book

I'm new to Indesign. I've managed to create page templates to create a photo book. Now I can drag'n'drop photos to the cells on each page.
However I find it very hard to see what photo I've already added to the document (we're talking hundreds of photos).  In other book creation software, or even in Lightroom, each photo is marked as 'added' once it was added to the book.
What is your technique, tips, etc... to create a photo book in indesign ?

thanks, I just had a look at Data Merge with images. It's a solution, but I find it overcomplicated because that means creating an Excel document with the list of my images (how would I create that from Lightroom...) and keeping it up-to-date since I often decide to add or remove images from the book as I create it.
Besides, that wouldn't let me see which images I've already added. It's a shame there is nothing built-in for indesign. Knowing which object was already placed on the pages, would really help.

Unable to open the events in Iphoto or transfer photos to create a book. The events are there but I am when double clicking they are not opening up. Also I am unable to drag photos to create a book. Any suggestions??

Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • How can I DISPLAY MORE THAN ONE ROW OF PHOTOS WHEN CREATING A BOOK?

Can I display more than A SINGLE ROW of ohotos on the right side of the page when I am creating a photo book? I have 500 pics and this single bar is ridiculous.

Command (right) - click on a photo in the Photo tray and select Small Photo from the contextual menu:
This will give you two columns of photos.
To reduce the number of photos to select from one can select only Unplaced Photos to be displayed in the tray.

  • CAN YOU ADD NEW PHOTOS AFTER CREATING A BOOK?

I finished making a book on iPhoto, but realized there were still some photos that i wanted to add. Is there any way that i can do this?

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • Laying out photos in a print template

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WSe851854fd1e0856a3401612124a754ce8e-8000.html

I must have missed something in the videos.  I am stuck with templates and when I want to print for example, an 8x10 photo, I get the grid from the previous photo that I saved  in  Layout Module and cannot  delete that template(s).  Other than that, I have had no problems with Lr4 which I used often daily.  Thanks for you help.

  • Laying out photos

    Hi,
I am in the process of making my first calendar and have run into my problem. I want to place three pictures on a page-- one that is vertically oriented and then two to the right of it that are horizontally oriented.
Right now the page is stuck with one more panoramic picture above the two horizontally oriented ones, and I can't get it to change. Any advice?
    -Stephanie

I, too, have a problem printing pictures to the size and view I want. "Preview" shows the picture in [vertical] position 6 x 4] but when I print it, it comes out horizontal [4 x 6] and most of the picture is cut out. I chose "custom size", put in the measurements for 6 x 4 but it doesn't but invariably, somewhere in the process, returns to 4 x 6.
I'm working with an HP PSC 1210.

  • Create collection from photos used in a book

I have a collection of about 800 photos. Created a book layout using about 80 of the photos. As I look at the filmstrip in the Book module, I can see that some of them are marked with "1" to indicate they are used in the book. So far, so good. I would like to create a new collection (or somehow filter) consisting of only the 80-or-so photos used in the book. Is this possible in LR5?

    Found a way...
    - create a new collection, and set it as the target
    - open the book
    - click/select each picture (one at a time)
    - press B to add it to the target collection
Have to select each picture in the book, but it's pretty fast...

Color space…creating a book in My publisher….when I look at the share book pre print the colors are all dulled out. I work in pro photo rgb in LR and PS ….My Pub is sRGB….where is the problem?

I finally got to my references. This had to do with "soft proofing" on screen in Photoshop.
So this may not help you at all. Re: Strange sRGB soft-proofing behavior  So go ahead and leave that setting at Basic.
However there is a Color Management forum that you also go to and see if anyone has answers for your particular problem.
Here is the link: Color management
I hope they can help you out.

  • Photo's disappear from select panel when creating a book (version 7.1.1.)

    Hi,
If I sort all photo's on date, and look in my photo library, I do not get the same photo's when I switch to the project panel to create a book. The photo-select window above the book lay-out window, only shows a part (all be it a large part) of my complete photo library. Does anyone know how to 'force' iPhoto to show all photo's form the Library in the photo select window?
    Thanks!
    Paul Harts

The photos in the thumbnails across the top when you are creating a book are ONLY the ones you have placed there - either by having them selected when you created the book project or by dragging them to the book project. The only way to "force" iPhoto to display all of your library is to select all of your library and drag it to the book project - which I personally would find impossible to work with

Thanx for the prompt response, KT. I have indeed seen that thread, only just after I posted the question.
I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

  • How can I print (into a physical book) a photo journal created by iPhoto using iPad?

How can I print (into a physical book) a photo journal created by iPhoto using iPad?

I think I worked out a clunky but workable way to do this.  There is an app for iPad called PhotoSync.  It is not free for the iPad but free for computers you want to sync with.  Install it.  When you edit photos in iPhoto on your iPad make sure to save them to Camera Roll.  PhotoSync will take the edited pictures from your iPad that have been saved into Camera Roll and will move them to your computer in batch (so long as it is on the same wireless network) where you merely import them into iPhoto or whatever software you use, and you can build a book for print.  The secret is to save the pictures into Camera Roll as you edit them, there is no batching function into camera roll, so doing it afterwards is tedious.  It actually works quite simply and because PhotoSync is free for computers, you can transfer photos to any computer that has downloaded the free software that is on the same wireless network - works great to get pictures to kids' or spouses computers.

  • Creating, updating and laying out an index

    Hello everybody,
I have to create and lay out an index of several files in a book.
What do I have to do?
How can I update the index? (I use Framemaker 8)
    Thank you for your help.
    Bye
    Vreni

Reading the Help file or Manual is a good suggestion, but in very simple form, this is what you do.
Place Index marker in the text at the desired locations (Special>Markers set to index and enter text).
After you have your marker in place, add a Standard Index (Add>Standard Index and select the index marker type).
Once the Index is part of the book, it updates with the book, same as your TOC.

  • When creating a book how can I get all the photos from an album to show up in the order they were in the album?

When creating a book in iphoto, how can I get all the photos from the album I want to use to show up in the order that they are in the album?  When I tried to use the option to add my own photos instead of having the program "flow" them, they showed up all mixed up.

iPhoto puts them in the book in chronological order.  So to get your photos from an album into an iPhoto book in the same order you will need to use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option and set them all to the same date with a 1 minute time difference between each.

  • Adding a photo to the selection AFTER creating a book in iphoto 09

Hi all - Just starting my first book creation on iPhoto 09... I created the book while in the smart folder I want to use the pics from... great so far... but there's just one pic which isn't in the smart folder, and when I amend it so that it does appear in the smart folder the photo selection in the book creator remain the same - e.g. my reel of pics above my book has not added the one extra pic. Have tried dragging the pic from my photo list into the book, but no joy... Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help - you people who know what you're doing ROCK....

Oooops. It'd help if I looked in the right place. Found it in my book selections. Sorry!
