Layout Break Space Before Paragraph

I am using a layout break in pages. I have a heading style with a background fill on my paragraph. I have a before paragraph space of 14. If I place the heading style right after a layout break (at the top of the new layout section) it eats my before paragraph space. Seems like a bug but I thought I would ask if anyone has a solution or workaround.
Thanks
Chris

It may not be completely intuitive, but that is how it is supposed to work. Space before and space after apply between paragraphs in a layout section but not at the beginning or end of a layout section or at the beginning or end of a page. It is sort of like the way the last character in a word can be right against the margin and yet the next line does not have to start with a space; the area outside the margins can "count" for this kind of white space. A layout break works like a margin here, even if it is in the middle of a page (and not necessarily preceded by white space).
If you are producing a multipage document, you normally want the tops of the text blocks of each page to line up at the margin, not jump up and down if one page happens to start with a new paragraph that has a space before set.
To deal with your situation with needing the white space at the beginning of a new layout section, with the cursor in that section, use the Layout pane of the Inspector to set the "Before" margin of that section to, for example, 14 pts.

  • "Space Before" Paragraph after Page Break

    Hello,
Here is what I am observing : the "Space Before" setting for paragraph styles is ignored if the paragraph is placed after a page break or on a disconnected page. How do I force InDesign to honour my "Space Before" setting ?
I give you an example : I've created a paragraph style called "Big Title". I've applied this style to section titles and to the index title. I want to lower "Big Title" a few centimeters from the page top, but my "Space Before" setting is ignored. What to do ?

You can force space above a paragraph by creating a non-printing character in the first line of the paragraph, or above it. Two possibilities:
    * Add a reference-page frame above paragraph to the paragraph format, using the Advanced panel of the paragraph designer.
    * Add autonumbering to the paragraph. Set the autonumber format character to a thin space. Create a character format for the autonumber; set its point size tall enough to create the space above. This has the gotcha of indenting the first line by the width of the thin space.
For either of these solutions, check that the space above setting for the format doesn't upset your workaround; if necessary, change the space above to let the workaround manage it.

  • [JS IDCS5] Space before paragraph if previous paragraph style is....

    Hi,
I've got a heading paragraph style that has got some space before defined. But when a previous paragraph has got some space after defined, I've got two times spaces between them. Is it possible to script when two certain paragraph styles follow up, that one of these styles is changing to a style without spacing?
    Regards, Sjoerd

This ought to get you started -- but Sjoerd, there is no way you can 'attach' this kind of script to a paragraph style. That's why you have to run the script *every time* you changed a style somewhere ...

  • Removing Blank Space (line) Accompanying Layout Breaks

I've used a layout break to make a portion of text two-column after a one-column section. Whatever I do, whereever I put it, the layout break takes space. It's a farily tight document, in a 10pt. font, and the line the layout break takes screws up the layout of the whole page. How can I get it to not put a whole blank line between the one-column section and the two-column section?

I might not fully understand the problem but take the paragraph break off the end of the line on the first section:

  • Space Before/After Not Refreshing in Paragraph Palette

Hi, I'm using Illustrator CS4 and am frustrated that in the paragraph palette, when I select text with specific settings for space before or space after, these values do not refresh to what is applied to the text. The values just remain at the last setting that I input or something. So I have no way of determining what the space before or space after is on different chunks of type. And if I try to adjust the settings up or down (using the arrows), it will jump to whatever setting is displayed (which is not what is actually applied to the type.
    - Has anyone else ever experienced this behavior?
    - Any workarounds?
    - Any other ways to detect the actual values applied to the text?
    THANKS! Very frustrating bug.

are you selecting the text Frame? if the palette shows the last used settings it means the whole textFrame has no custom spacing applied. If you see nothing, it means mixed settings.
you need to place the cursor inside a paragraph in order to be picked up by the palette.

  • How come when I use "Space before" in a paragraph style, it will only put the space in if i have a blank line above it. Shouldn't it do this regardless?

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that if I have a style with a "space before" setting of, for example, 21p, i should be able to put text into a new text box and have that text with the style  applied pop down the page. It doesn't do this. I can make it work by just hitting "enter" and having a blank line in front of it, but in my mind this shouldn't be necessary. What am I doing wrong?

That's expected behavior. If the text spans columns or pages you wouldn't want a space above if a new column started with a paragraph at the top. Like this where you want the 2nd column to align with the others:

  • 5.2 Pages, how to create white space before and after paragraphs?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a very frustrating time with the new 5.2 version of pages after upgrading from a prior version. In the previous version, you could easily adjust the exact amount of white space before and after each paragraph. You were able to do this from within the inspector, but for the life of me, I cannot find it ANYWHERE in the new version and I'm ripping my hair out trying to find it.
Surely you must be able to control the amount of space before and after each paragraph? It's totally useless to me if I can't; I want to be able to format my documents how I want; ie. plenty of white space between paragraphs and list points, not all bunched up together.
Someone please help me! Thank you so much!

Try telling Apple that. Start by rating/reviewing Pages in the App Store.
I have been told repeatedly by Apple staff that the new User Interface makes it "Much simpler".
When I ask how? …and point out how many (more) hidden steps there are, they don't want to talk anymore.
Apple's standard response to just about everything lately, unfortunately.
btw If you have the choice, use Pages '09 instead. Less buggy and way more features, better laid out.

  • How can I remove space inserted by layout break?

Does anyone know how to get rid of the blank line added by inserting a layout break?
I have a word processing document that has a title, authors, affiliation etc centered as a single column at the top of the page followed by a layout break and the rest of the document text in two columns. The problem is that the layout break inserts a blank line so instead of a continuous single line spacing throughout the document its two parts are separated by blank line.

    Hi MartinSmith,
    Welcome to Pages '09 discussions.
I'm not quite sure what you're doing so here's what I did:
    1. Created a new document
    2. At the top I put Author below that Affiation then immediately did Insert > Layout Break
    3. Made the remaining of the page two columns.
My document doesn't have the extra line feed you speak of. It most likely is I'm not following your lead. Please provide more information so we may better assist you.

  • Layout Breaks are inserting a big gap in my document

Inserting a Layout Break before and after an area of a page that needs to be in two columns leaves about 25 points of space above and below the columned area. This space is unaffected by paragraph spacing, line spacing, etc. It just occurs with the layout formatting. Why? This big gap in my document is throwing off the overall formatting. How do I make it smaller/go away? Any ideas much appreciated!
    Zach

    z,
You might try clicking on the Layout inspector > Layout button, and take a look at the Before setting. Reduce the number there and the space should reduce correspondingly.

Did you try Scott's advice: set the Space After of that last paragraph to 20 inch?
When I tried this, it seemed to work, but I decided against suggesting it because I was also playing with some other settings that affected subsequent paragraphs, and I wasn't sure if the combination was making it appear to work. Growing up in FrameMaker, I learned that space before a paragraph is ignored at top of frame/column/page, and space after a paragraph is ignored at bottom of frame/column/page.
Well, lah de dah, InDesign honors space after a paragraph. Bingo. Simplest.
However, I'm curious why it's important to mark the end of one contributor's work this way, rather than marking the start of another contributor's work by applying the start at top of frame/column/page property. Unless the first new contribution paragraph is moved to another position in the sequence, first is always first; Next Style assures that pressing Return at the end of the first paragraph when authoring, or selecting multiple paragraphs and applying the top-of-container style to the first paragraph and letting the Next Style option handle the rest of the selection.
When the last paragraph moves forward in the text flow, or a paragraph is added after it, the new contributor's first paragraph at the top of the next container is not affected; if sufficient content is added or removed upstream to reflow the later contributors' work top-of-container always works as expected.
Is there some compelling reason not to mark the author change by the first-paragraph-at-top method?

  • Where does one set space after paragraph in the new Pages 5.0? It used to be under text in the Inspector in the previous version, but I just can't find it in this new version.

Where does one set space after paragraph in the new Pages 5.0? It used to be under text in the Inspector in the previous version, but I just can't find it in this new version. Paragraphs seem to only be dealt with in styles, and the Formatting window for text doesn't seem to have the space after paragraph contrtol that the older Inspector had. What am I missing?

Sorry I did this without looking:

  • How do I remove a space before the first word in a sentence using find and replace or GREP?

Right, so I am laying out a document in inDesign from a word document and it has a space before every first word in a sentence. It is really annoying and I need a quick way to get rid of them. I wasn't too sure how to do it with find/change but I am sure there is a way in GREP if someone can help me. I have included an image so that people can see exactly what I mean.

The ^ location works for all paragraphs.
But a note to the OP, there is a sample script called FindChangeByList that removes leading and trailing spaces as well as extra spaces after punctuation, all in one go. But if you want to continue to use a GREP find/change to remove leading space, I'd modify Joel's suggestion to ^\s+ to get those cases where the user typed multiple spaces as well.
And don't forget there are actually legitimate places for leading tabs, which both the script and this GREP will find and remove, so be careful.

  • Space Before Text in Word Document

Having generated a word document I noticed that thre was
space before all my paragraphs. Simple to fix, or so I thought.
When I checked the paragraph setting s in word there was no space
before the paragraph. Checked the paragraph above, and that did not
    have space after set.

If the extra spacing is not in your Word output files, then
it must be in your RH source files.
There's either something at each of the paragraphs, or in the
HEAD section of the topic, or in your CSS style sheet assigned to
the topic. The proximity of styling info to its content is what
    determines its effect.
    Good luck,

  • Space after paragraph not appearing in browsers.

    Question from a newbie.
I'm using Dreamweaver (latest version) to create a rather long daily newsletter. Lots of paragraphs. I'm finding that many times, after a paragraph, I'll see a space before the next pargraph but then when I save the final page and open it in a browser the space between the paragraphs is gone.
This doesn't happen with every paragraph. I can go back and 'fix' this by backing up the second paragraph into the previous, then hitting Enter twice.
What I want: If I see a single line space between two paragraphs in Design mode I want it to appear that way in my browser. (I use both Firefox and Chrome.)
    Thank you!

Thanks in advance for your help.
FYI - I'm creating a rather long HTML newsletter for clients each day. It's mostly paragraph after paragraph. Very simple.
In the problem described above I noticed that when in Dreamweaver I always see a line between paragraphs. This is what I want to see. But a few times in each document, when I open it in a browser the line has gone away.
When the line has vanished (in my browser) is see this code between paragraphs:
    <br></p><p>
When the paragraphs show up as they should in the browser this is the code between them:
    </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>
    OR
    </p><p><br>
