  • Removing Blank Space (line) Accompanying Layout Breaks

I've used a layout break to make a portion of text two-column after a one-column section. Whatever I do, whereever I put it, the layout break takes space. It's a farily tight document, in a 10pt. font, and the line the layout break takes screws up the layout of the whole page. How can I get it to not put a whole blank line between the one-column section and the two-column section?

I might not fully understand the problem but take the paragraph break off the end of the line on the first section:

  • Layout Breaks are inserting a big gap in my document

Inserting a Layout Break before and after an area of a page that needs to be in two columns leaves about 25 points of space above and below the columned area. This space is unaffected by paragraph spacing, line spacing, etc. It just occurs with the layout formatting. Why? This big gap in my document is throwing off the overall formatting. How do I make it smaller/go away? Any ideas much appreciated!

    z,
You might try clicking on the Layout inspector > Layout button, and take a look at the Before setting. Reduce the number there and the space should reduce correspondingly.

  • Layout Break Space Before Paragraph

I am using a layout break in pages. I have a heading style with a background fill on my paragraph. I have a before paragraph space of 14. If I place the heading style right after a layout break (at the top of the new layout section) it eats my before paragraph space. Seems like a bug but I thought I would ask if anyone has a solution or workaround.
    Thanks
    Chris

It may not be completely intuitive, but that is how it is supposed to work. Space before and space after apply between paragraphs in a layout section but not at the beginning or end of a layout section or at the beginning or end of a page. It is sort of like the way the last character in a word can be right against the margin and yet the next line does not have to start with a space; the area outside the margins can "count" for this kind of white space. A layout break works like a margin here, even if it is in the middle of a page (and not necessarily preceded by white space).
If you are producing a multipage document, you normally want the tops of the text blocks of each page to line up at the margin, not jump up and down if one page happens to start with a new paragraph that has a space before set.
To deal with your situation with needing the white space at the beginning of a new layout section, with the cursor in that section, use the Layout pane of the Inspector to set the "Before" margin of that section to, for example, 14 pts.

  • How can I remove space inserted by layout break?

Does anyone know how to get rid of the blank line added by inserting a layout break?
I have a word processing document that has a title, authors, affiliation etc centered as a single column at the top of the page followed by a layout break and the rest of the document text in two columns. The problem is that the layout break inserts a blank line so instead of a continuous single line spacing throughout the document its two parts are separated by blank line.

    Hi MartinSmith,
    Welcome to Pages '09 discussions.
I'm not quite sure what you're doing so here's what I did:
    1. Created a new document
    2. At the top I put Author below that Affiation then immediately did Insert > Layout Break
    3. Made the remaining of the page two columns.
My document doesn't have the extra line feed you speak of. It most likely is I'm not following your lead. Please provide more information so we may better assist you.

  • Headers, Sections Breaks and Layout Breaks

I need to be able to turn Headers on and off in different places in the documents.  In Appleworks I would make a section break, tell it not to carry over the headers and footers from the previous section, and that was it.  In Pages 09, Section breaks start a new page, which I don't want.  Layout breaks don't start a new page, but I don't see I can tell it to NOT carry over the headers and footers from the previous Layout.  Is there no way to do this?
    Frustrated in MO

I really don't understand where is the problem with the need to insert a section break to ask the app to use a different page header.
The headers appear on top of pages which means that they appear after pages or section breaks.
It seems that you did something wrong. When I insert a section break the app doesn't create a new page, it insert a forced separation between two existing pages.
Are you sure that you used the menu "Insert a section break" ?
My guess is that you used "Insert a Section".

  • Fixed section or layout breaks

In pages, is there a way to fix a section or layout break to start at the second page?
All I have found thus far are floating section breaks. As I type more on the first page, the section break moves down, so I later have to move it to the start of the second page manually. I would like it to be fixed to start on the second page and have the text flow around the break.

If you describe what you want to do in more detail, it's possible there may be a different way to do what you want. Section breaks are not the feature you are looking for to do this, since they pretty much define the end of text flow -- text in one section can't flow to another, and thus can't flow around a section break.

  • How do change "layout break" spacing in Pages '13?

I'm editing my resume and added some columns in. The columns look nice but the layout break spacing is way to far apart. How do I modify this? Please see the inserted image for a better idea.

Hi, I was wondering how you add a column into pages 13. I know in Pages 09 you could go to the inspector>setup>columns but how do you get there in the new Pages for Mac? Thanks

  • Page layout breaks when Editing page

I've created a site for a client who wants to use Contribute
to edit it. The site wasn't built with Dreamweaver (hand-coded).
Pages look fine when they're loaded in the Contribute window, but
when he goes to Edit the page, the layout breaks. it's a table-less
CSS-based layout with some includes, but it looks fine when
initially loaded. After editing & publishing, the page
generally looks fine again. This would only be a minor annoyance,
but sometimes there are blocks of text that, when Editing, suddenly
    seem to have a near-zero line spacing....so he can't see what he's
trying to edit. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
    thanks,
    benjy

Check out this thread, maybe you can handcode editable

  • Using liquid on web detail layout breaks template

I am using an if logic tag to hide text if a web field is empty in the web detail layout but it breaks the template - none of my content holders in the page template are rendering.
The actual if tag is doing its job and hiding the text.
If I render the webapp to a normal html page with the if logic tag, the template does not break.
I read somewhere in the documentation that all the tags must be rendered in liquid.
Is it not possible at this stage to add liquid to the web detail layout?

It will not be a bug because liquid works in detail layouts and everywhere just fine.
Can you post the code as it is likely you have an error.
You DO NOT need to do all liquid - Please ensure your not reading old documentation about the old liquid, what we have now and what was done previously are quite different.

  • Services deleting layout breaks

First off, Pages does not show services in the contextual menu as advertised for Snow Leopard. The services show up in TextEdit when text is selected, but not in Pages. (Except for a few that must be connected by some different mechanism, as they don't show in TextEdit but do show in Pages.) Baffling.
Secondly, when I use a text service via the Pages > Services route, if the text I have selected includes a layout or page break, the breaks are deleted. If the service involves any kind of text substitution, even if it's just "smarten quotes", it will delete all breaks. I have tried both TextSoap and WordServices with same result.
I can work around this by selecting only the text between breaks to run services on, but that means making dozens of manual selections in a document instead of CMD-A, AND I have to go to the Pages > Services menu every time instead of using a right-click popup. Tedious. (Yes, I could assign keyboard shortcuts, but I would never remember them.)
I guess this is feedback, not a question, since I don't really expect anyone knows how to make Pages play nicely with Services. If anybody else is frustrated with this problem, feel free to chime in.

Snow Leopard changed the behavior of Services.
Only those which you choose to display are displayed.
The choice is made from the menu
    Services > Services preferences.
I installed some components of WordServices.
This new scheme is really interesting which allow us to work with a Services menu with a reasonable number of items.
As far as I know, Services where never reachable thru ctrl-click (aka right-click).
_Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'10

  • Div layout breaks apart

I have created a CSS div layout contained within an overall

  • Table on Page One Blocking Layout/Section Break & Distinct Headers/Footers

Is there any way to start a new Header/Footer on page 2, after a page one table that fills the page?
I've created my first page as a Table (entire page) in order to recreate the front page of my newsletter, as used by a previous editor. Works great, and has been the only way I've found to mimic the old front page. Problem is, I can't get the document to accept setting up a different header and footer for subsequent pages, and when I try to do so, I end up with a header on page 1 above my banner Headline. Yech.
I can't put a section break inside the Page 1 Table - Pages Won't allow (option is greyed out). I tried to put a layout break at the top of page 2, which is supposed to allow a new Header/Footer for subsequent pages, but when i insert the cursor on page 2 and attempt to create a distinct Header/Footer for the document after the layout break, there is a check mark, greyed out, in the Section part of the Layout Inspector, for the line: Use previous Headers and Footers. That is, it's locked and can't be unchecked.
If I do try to set up a header/footer field linked to the doc page after the layout break, it also creates the same layout and fields as for the first page.
Am I stuck here because I started out my doc with a table?

    Welcome to the forums, OwlRemembers.
You should be OK with using the table as you are. The problem is probably arising because you aren't inserting the section break into the default text box on the page. This may be because the cursor is being inserted into the header, or that the table is covering the entire default text box, and so clicking in the main part of the page selects a table cell.
There are two things I would suggest. The first is to use the Layout View (under View menu, choose Show Layout) -- this will ensure that you can see the default text box (the big box that covers most of the page. The second would be to click on the table you have created and, in the Wrap Inspector palette, choose "Fixed on page". Once this is done, you should be able to grab the table, move is slightly aside, insert a section break on the page, and move the table back.

  • How to create a document with sections that differ in margin and layout

I'm trying to add a pages document 'B' into my new pages document 'A'.
A and B have two entirely different layouts and different document margins. So whenever i copy B into A, B's margins become A's margins and thus B's layout turns into a mess.
I tried adding a section break, column break, layout break.. None resolves the issues.
All ideas on this are appreciated.
    Thank you.

A document has the same size, orientation and margins throughout.
You can however set the minimum margins and use Layout breaks to position text and images within that.
In practice it is best to keep the two separate and combine the finished sets as .pdfs.

  • 2 Column Page Layout

I'm wondering if there is any way to have two-columns set up in one section of a document and then one column in another. I'm working on taking notes for my biology class and am trying to separate the vocabulary words from the notes themselves, and was wondering if I can set up a vocabulary sub-heading in which the vocabulary words would be in a two-column set-up and the rest of the document in a one-column set-up. Is there any easy way to do this without having to deal with text boxes?

Since sections usually start on a new page, I find it better for me to insert a layout break.
