LBA 3125818008 on my hard drive.

Is this code necessary for a new drive? dv6408nr, dead hard drive

Just an edit to my previous post.  All other hard drivers slide into the connector.  On this HP you "drop" it into the connector.
Wondering if the LBA number specified the type of connector or what.  Thanks   Jay

  • Hard drive wakes up immediately after being put into standby

I have an IDE disk which, till now, I used to keep in standby mode (it makes an audible humming noise when it's working which annoys me a lot :<). Today I noticed that after running `hdparm -y' on it, it would spin down but then it would immediately spin up again. I'm certain that the disk isn't being used and doesn't have any partitions mounted anywhere on the filesystem. Still, I'm unable to pinpoint the reason it's waking up.
Any ideas on why this is happening?
Edit: It appears that the disk gets into standby by itself after 10 minutes. I wish I knew where this value is coming from. O.o
Edit2: Those 10 minutes must be coming from `hdparm -S1 /dev/sdb'; maybe the hard drive has a lower limit in regard to this setting. :3

Here is what i get when i try that command.:
    $ sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sdc
    /dev/sdc:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254)
    HDIO_DRIVE_CMD failed: Input/output error
    APM_level = not supported
I tried other values also and its always the same error.
I just did another try with -y and the drive stayed in standby during ±40 minutes this time. The most annoying part is that is something that was not happening before I am pretty sure that it would stay in standby for days.
I also included my results for hdparm -I.:
    $ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdc

  • How do I install a 3rd Hard drive?

I have a 2000 Quicksilver that already has two hard drives installed. My question is, now that I have purchased a 3rd hard drive, where do I mount it? I see an open space below the CD drive and ZIP drive, but no mounting bracket/sled. Is there a piece of hardware I can buy to mount the drive?

    Hi, widowmaker -
A G4 QuickSilver model, like all earlier G4's, has two built-in ATA controllers, one for each built-in bus. One provides connections for up to two internal hard drives; the other is intended to provide connection for the optical drive and the (optional) Zip drive.
The baseplate has three positions for drives -
The front position, #1, and the middle position, #2, are where factory-installed SCSI drives would be placed.
The rear position, position #3, is where the initial two ATA hard drives mount, using the included sled.
Positions 1 and 2 can also be used for individual ATA drives. The problem in adding a third (and even a fourth) ATA drive is the absence of a controller. The solution is to add a PCI card controller; if it is a single-channel card, it can connect up to two additional drives.
If you get such a card as an ATA/100 or ATA/133, 48-bit LBA compliant card, you can then use ATA (or PATA = Parallel ATA) drives larger than 128GB (the built-in controller on all G4's and the early QS models has a drive size limit of 128GB) - although OS 9 has a volume limit of about 200GB, OSX has no problem using large drives.
However, it may be of advantage to add a SATA PCI card instead; this will allow the use of SATA (Serial ATA) drives, which are becoming more common. The G5 and Intel models use SATA drives; doing this would allow future use of the drives in a newer machine.
Some folk have mounted a third drive above the optical drive, or even performed surgery on the Zip drive space to permit fitting a standard-size hard drive there, using the Zip drive's connection on its ATA cable to connect that third drive.
There are at least two problems with doing that - (1) on some models, that ATA bus is slower than the normal bus used by the hard drives; (2) heat dissipation - the internal airflow path is not intended to include removing heat from a hard drive placed up there, and so it may be necessary to increase the cooling capacity of the machine.

  • MacBook Air hard drive dying?

I'm wondering if someone can help me take a look at the console messages to see if my MacBook Air hard drive is possibly failing.
I had shut down my computer and the shut down process went just fine. A few minutes later when I turned on the computer again, the Apple logo showed up with the spinning disc/sun ray but it never got to the login window.
I hooked up the SuperDrive to repair disk permissions and repair disk. Indeed, it needed disk repairs and permissions to be repaired. It seems to be running fine now.
When I opened the Console, it says something about disk I/O error for some of the log entries.

  • Problems Upgrading to Larger hard drive for A105-S4074

The 120gig HDD in my A105-S4074 is full. I am running the original OS that the machine came preinstalled with:  Windows XP Media Center with SP3.  I bought a 320gig drive and the APRICORN EZ-UP-UNIVERSAL 2.5" USB 2.0 Hard Drive Upgrade Kit online. The new drive is a "TOSHIBA MK3265GSX 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive".
I am not sure what the specs are for the BIOS but it's the original configuration...I have never updated/flashed the BIOS.
The Arconis EZ GIG III Software works perfectly in creating a copy of my old drive on the new bigger drive. When I swap the old for the new, the machine boots and runs exactly the same as it did with the old drive, but it won't "see" the extra 180gig of space until I add a new partition. After the partition is created, the machine STILL runs fine and I am able to move data over as normal. BUT when I REBOOT, the machine no longer loads windows.
In every attempt of configuring the 320gig drive differently (I have done a single partition as both an Extended and a Primary. In another attempt I created 2 partitions, both below 127gig in size, I have run the imaging software at least 4 times as well...) every time I reboot after the partitions are completed, the system will not load Windows. After the BIOS POSTs I get a black screen. I have tried booting to the old drive while it's in the external enclosure and connected via USB cable. Sometimes windows starts to load, but then it flashes quickly to a Blue Screen and goes back to black nothingness. The blue screen flashes too quickly for me to read the error message.
I am pretty much at the end of my ability to troubleshoot. I don't think the issue is with the new drive as it works fine until the extra space is partitioned. I don't think the issue is the Acronis Upgrade software as it does it's job of making a copy of my old drive perfectly as well.
So what I would like to know, but haven't been able to find via searches online is this: What, if any, is the HDD size limitation of Windows XP SP 3?
Thanks in advance for any help or advise you can give me!

    Maybe this explains it, Steven.
Frequently Asked Questions about 48-bit LBA
    See the first item.
If the issue with 28-bit versus 48-bit LBA means hard drives can only be used up to a maximum capacity of 137 GB, why can't I just partition my 48-bit LBA hard drive into multiple partitions each less than 137 GB to get around the problem?
    Did you upgrade the BIOS?

  • [SOLVED] Strange Hard Drive Errors - Read Only Filesystem?

Solution: Discard old laptop, buy new laptop
I have an Acer Aspire 5103WLMi. For about 2 months now, Arch has been running smoothly. Until 2 weeks ago.
It all started when I tried to install and configure autofs on Arch x86_64. On the next reboot, all manner of errors were printed to the screen, to the effect that the internal hard drive was only being mounted read-only, rendering the system unusable. I tried to find a solution, but there were no references to read-only anywhere; fstab, grub etc. None that I could find.
I tried reinstalling. However, x86_64 Arch refused to boot properly first time due to the exact same error; and I *know* that I'm configuring everything correctly. I managed (somehow) to coerce i686 Arch to install, and things "work".
Seemingly out of the blue, during normal operation, all running applications will stop, and spit out error after error to the effect of "Cannot Write to Read Only Filesystem!". Sakura won't load (Input/Output error, apparently), and the only way to shut down the laptop is a hard reset (I can't log in as root or use sudo because it wants to write to the filesystem first, which it obviously can't.
Now, I'm going to be giving the insides of this laptop a good cleanout this weekend, and I'm in the process of backing up all of my data, but I was wondering if anyone else has come across a similar form of misbehaviour; or (with a bit of luck) some potential solutions?
This is very peculiar, because there seems to be no reason why the laptop suddenly loses write permissions to the hard drive. Cheers.
Edit: I think I should point out that my /boot partition is Ext2, and / and /home are Ext3

Could this truly be referring to my problem, since the 'logs' show that the *exact same* error occurred many times.
Not that this tells me how to fix it...
Well, if anyone knows if there is a solution, I'd love to know. If the only solution is to ditch the Hard Drive, fair enough. Either way: I'm backing up all of my important data ASAP.
    Cheers.
Oh, and kclive18, after I noticed that I couldn't get onto my Drive, I reinstalled arch, leaving no trace of /etc/autofs/auto.media.
Additionally, somehow I have now been able to install Arch x86_64, but the problems still occur...

  • Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114 Hard Drive Replacement

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114, and the hard drive is broken. The hard drive model is MK4025GAS. Where can I buy it? Can I find cheaper one interchangable?

You can use any parallel ATA drive that is jumper selectable as 'master'.  Cable select only drives won't work.  Local stores like BestBuy usually have a selection of replacement notebook drives although the PATA drives are getting harder to find with the spreading use of SATA drives.  To the best I can determine, your notebook has 48-bit LBA which would allow any size drive available.  There are a number of online vendors as well as local sources.  I've used NewEgg successfully in the past.

First I thought it looks like a problem with the SATA connector within my notebook, but it shouldn't be case as the hdd sits tight and the old one still works. Moreover I tried to change SATA settings in BIOS from "AHCI" to "Compatibility" in case of a driver fault, but this also didn't fix the issue.
For now I have connected the new hard drive with the SATA2USB adaptor and do some writing on it via dd. In this case, the errors do not occur at all.
The disk now gives me errors even if connected via USB. So I assume it is a hardware defect. The Western Digital Drive Check tools won't boot, but, I think these errors are more or less unambiguous

We call it case or drive hum. And it seems like a harmonic clash of two devices, or the 2nd hard drive causing the case itself (metal case).
There are shock absorbent washers on the side metal door.
Drive is attached and firmly installed and the latch on the back is securely in down and lock position.
And of course it still happens.
Me, I'd pull the old inefficient 250GB drive with 8MB cache, the Seagate 7200.9s that some shipped with were horrible performance and noise).
What I do with drive is run it through WD Lifeguard in Windows a couple times (Extended Test, full format instead of quick).
Some people sought out drive sled anti-vibration washers to fit to the sled (can't change the height though in order to fit properly).
Turn off "allow drives to spin down when not in use" if on.

  • "F11 System Recovery" during boot does not work after Cloning hard drive.

Problem: “F11 System Recovery” during boot does not work after Cloning hard drive.
HP Envy m6-1125dx UEFI Notebook Computer with GPT hard drive.
Original Seagate Hard Disk GPT 700GB with Window 8.0_64 upgraded to Windows 8.1_64
Startup Menu (F11 System Menu works properly) only on original hard drive.
Following obtained from Disk Management & diskpart in Command Prompt.
                                     GPT Disk <700GB>
Partition 1 WINRE NTFS Primary 235MB/400MB [Recovery]
Partition 2 EFI System FAT32 (LBA) Primary 108MB/260MB [System]
Partition 3 (NONE) Unformatted Primary 128MB/128MB [Reserve]
Partition 4 Main NTFS Primary 90GB/195GB [Primary “C”]
Partition 5 (NONE) NTFS Primary 372MB/450MB [Recovery]
Partition 6 Data NTFS Primary 7GB/475GB [Primary “E”]
Partition 7 NTFS Primary 26MB/350MB [Recovery]
Partition 8 Recovery NTFS Primary 24GB/26GB [Recovery “D”]
I have Cloned the original hard drive to a new HGST 1TB Hard Drive using four different methods (sector by sector):
    Acronis True Image 2015
    Acronis Backup for PC
    AOMEI Backupper Professional
    Macrium Reflect
Each time the cloning process completes successfully and has the same original partition arrangement. The computer works properly except when trying to use the “F11 System Menu” key during boot. It gives the following error message:
    “Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
A required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed.
    Error code: 0xc0000225
You need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don’t have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer. “
Any suggestions why the F11 System Recovery does not work during boot and how to fix the problem would be appreciated. I have does various disk checking and file checking on both the original and new hard drive with no errors.
    Thank you in advanced.

    Hi,
How did you clone the HDD ? One-for-one or different method ?
    Regards.

  • Which hard-drive modules should I load for the mkinitcpio.conf file?

Hey all, I've always been confused by all the weird module names in the image files, anyway, here goes, since I have a laptop, I won't be upgrading my harddrive to a new interface. but.. that's not the problem, the problem is I don't know which modules I need to load for my hard-drive, here are some outputs from lspci, hdparm etc. Any help is appreciated!

Do you have any problem with your current mkinitcpio setup, or why do you ask this?
If it works with the defaults, it's probably a good idea not to mess with it.
Okay, that's that and now for the adventerous part...
Here's a minimal setup that works for me:
    MODULES="pata_hpt37x sd_mod jfs"
    HOOKS="base udev"
You'd probably need to use pata_atiixp instead of pata_hpt37y, and whatever filesystem you use for / instead of jfs. In case you use encryption, lvm etc., take care to include the necessary hooks.

  • Internal hard drive/repair: SMART status; Disk Utility, Tech Tool & More

machine: 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4 (Aluminium) with 80GB internal HD
internal hard drive (original): Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 series HTS541080G9AT00
    hard drive firmware: MB4AA5AJ
    ATA version: 6
    ATA standard: ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 3a
I have monitored the SMART status etc. of my internal drive with smartmontools for some time. Occasionally, I would see an error or a failed self-test but later testing always succeeded and things did not seem to be problematic.
At the beginning of this week, I started to see a lot of failed self-tests (though some still passed), a rising number of bad ("pending") sectors and reallocation attempts (though no reallocated sectors) and various other errors. The computer seemed to have trouble reading from the disk at times and Carbon Copy Cloner reported two I/O errors when cloning (a later clone succeeded). fsck showed errors although running fsck -fy repeatedly seemed to resolve them.
The Apple hardware tests initially reported an error (2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6-Master) but I hadn't realised I should disconnect peripherals before running it so I did that and repeated the test which found no issues. I ran the extended test a total of three times with no errors.
As I continued to have problems, I booted from my clone and had Disk Utility wipe the drive by writing zeros to it. (I thought trying to get it to write everywhere would either finish the drive off or force it to reallocate the bad blocks. As I understand it, in normal use, the drive won't reallocate the blocks unless it can recover the data in the hopes of reading it at a later time.)
I then continued monitoring the disk using smartmontools. At this point, short self-tests succeed but extended self-tests "disappear". They don't fail, they simply vanish. They begin and smartctl shows the test in progress but then no error or result is logged - it is as if the test was never run. The first time I did this, I got an error saying the SMART attributes could not be read but subsequent tests do not trigger even an error. Short self-tests continue to pass.
There are now (according to SMART) zero bad ("pending") sectors but zero reallocated sectors, which seems odd. The raw read error rate fluctuates (zero one minute, many thousands a while later) although I am not sure it did not do this before.
Disk Utility claims the disk does not support SMART status even though smartctl clearly shows it does. Disk Utility claims the volume is "OK".
I ran Tech Tool Deluxe 3.04 from CD and 3.1.1 from my clone. In both cases, I ran all available tests on the drive. No problems were found.
I am seeing some problems even while booted from my clone - yesterday, the system froze completely and I had to force a shut-down by switching off the power (fsck then found a minor error but repaired it). Just before this happened, I was unable to mount a disk image and was trying to rectify the situation when the system froze. It is possible that the errors fsck corrected were implicated in the freeze, rather than caused by it, since Disk Utility found and repaired similar errors for the other two clones I have (on different partitions of my external drive - yes, I know this is sub-optimal).
Here is some current output from smartmontools:
    ---output: smartctl -q noserial -a disk0---

Self-tests 1-8 were all run after I erased the disk. The others were run before I did so. Not listed are the extended self-tests I've started since erasing which, as I say, have simply disappeared.
The checksum error regarding the log is normal for this disk. At least, I've got that error ever since I started using smartmontools for monitoring so I assume it is normal. (I installed this version of the software in about April 2008 and have used it since.) Also, starting offline testing has never succeeded on this disk (I think I checked into this at the time but can't quite remember - this is not new, anyway).
    Questions
how should I interpret all this? (Why does Disk Utility say SMART is not supported while smartctl clearly shows it is at the same time? Why do the extended tests simply vanish? Is the drive definitely dying?) I do not want to replace the disk unless I absolutely have to because I understand that replacing disks in 12" PBs is no small matter and cost is an issue. I do not want to replace the machine unless I have to because cost is an issue and, also, I really like this computer and have no idea what I would want in its place, even if expense were no obstacle.
if it isn't clear whether the drive is dying or not, is there some further strategy I can use to establish this?
if the drive is dying, is a machine of this age worth repairing and, if it is, under what circumstances is it worth doing so? For example, it might be worth doing if you can do the job yourself, but that might be quite impractical for non-expert (not to mention, inexpert) users.
if there is a hardware problem (which I obviously think is very, very probable at this point), is it definitely a dying hard drive? (I've seen people write ominous things about disk controllers etc. which I gather are more serious - or less repairable - than a "mere" dying disk.)
what questions should I be asking you and what are the answers to those questions?!
Many thanks for your patience in reading this far.

The 12" PB internals are a bit more complex, for PB's. If you don't want to replace the hard drive yourself or pay someone to install it, you could always get an external firewire hard drive, and use it to boot from and for general usage. Would have to be firewire, since the PB won't book from a USB device. One example of what you could get is a 160GB external hard drive: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS4U5160GB8/ . All the choices with that case are listed here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go
Have you called any Apple Authorized Service Providers to see what they would charge to install a drive for you? Whether you bought it or they supplied it? You can find a local one in the US at http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/

    Alex,
You can pretty much ignore WEI for the most part. Of the many various benchmarks around, that is one of the least telling indicators.
PPBM is good to see how the various components of your system are performing in addition to how you have configured where various files are stored, etc. You need to however run the PPBM5 test no though to make useful comparisons with published test results.
Your C drive performance does not impact either PPBM5 scores or real world editing nearly as much as the working drive or drive arrays where your projects, media, cache, scratch, and exports are stored.
I don't personally use CrystalMark but the read/write scores for 4k files looked very slow for a RAID 0 array. Make sure your caching policy is set up for maximum performance (disk properties / hardware tab / properties / policies tab / enable write caching & turn off windows write-cache buffer flushing).
    Regards,
    Jim

  • Something's Wrong with my Hard Drive

I recently tried to install Ubuntu on my Intel Mac Mini. This ended in disaster and left my machine unable to re-boot into OS X. I finally figured out that I could bring up a boot menu by holding down the option key (derr). I then tried to partition my hard drive using Boot Camp so I could install Ubuntu that way. This caused an error message that told me to run the disk utility because my hard drive needed repair. Disk utility does not let me repair the hard drive, only verify it. I did this and it came up with the message:
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
in the dialog window it says: "Volume bit map needs minor repair" and "invalid volume free block count". I can only speculate as to what that means, the bottom line is that I can't partition my hard drive. I tried booting to the OS X startup DVD but the option key only brings up my hard drive as an option to boot to.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm stumped.
Mac Mini Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I would just like to add that I ran a partition inspector and it came up with this result:

    # Start LBA End LBA Type
    1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)

    # A Start LBA End LBA Type

    2 * 409640 234179463 af Mac OS X HFS+
    MBR contents:
    Boot Code: Unknown, but bootable
    Partition at LBA 40:
Boot Code: None (Non-system disk message)
    File System: FAT32
Listed in GPT as partition 1, type EFI System (FAT)
    Partition at LBA 409640:

    File System: HFS Extended (HFS+)
Listed in GPT as partition 2, type Mac OS X HFS+

I don't know if this will help, but it can't hurt.

  • K7T266 Pro2-RU Hard drive size limit

What is the maximum size hard drive that the BIOS can handle for the K7T266 Pro2-RU board? The official web site and BIOS updates are sort of vague... I know that the regular limit is 137 GB, and Windows XP Service Pack 1 has some kind of workaround. Will there be problems with installing big hard drives on this board? I'm not planning on using the RAID controller...
    Thanks

well that works for drives over 32gb and under 137gb on boards whos bios cannot see drives over 32 gb
but ive never seen it proved to work with drives over 137 gb in a board cannot cope thith drives that big
bios indicates the raid has 48 bit lba support so usde your big drives on that

  • G5 refuses to boot from external hard drive......

I have tried 3 different external firewire hard drive setups & it refuses to boot from any of them. This is extremely disturbing, because my trusty old G4 never had any issues like this. The latest one I tried is a Seagate enclosure (model # ST3500630AS), which is a Firewire external/SATA internal setup. The other one I have tried is my trusty old Kanguru S-80.0 (KU-35/81) - it has since been upgraded to a 120 GB drive internally. The third one I tried is a brand new Ultra enclosure (USB 2.0/Firewire 400) - the model# is ULT31310. This makes absolutely no sense. It will start to boot, but then it either gives me circle with a diagonal line through it or the Apple comes up & it just sits there (the fans will rev up after about a minute of sitting there). I cannot believe that 3 different firewire chipsets are not supported by the G5 for boot. If anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this problem, please let me know (It isn't a huge deal, as I can always yank the SATA backup drive & reinstall it into the G5 in an emergency, but I should be able to do it from an external drive). Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you reformat them to Mac Extended?
Did you install or clone the software onto the drive? what did you use?
Have you looked at OWC's FW cases? never had problem on my G4 or Mac Pro with their FW800 and 400 cases (all Oxford 911-912-924 which are mac friendly).
The Oxford 924 is FW800/400/USB2/SATA and accepts SATA drives.
    http://www.macsales.com
    You are getting kernel panics.
I avoid vendor cases. Most support PCs fine, but weak on Macs (even WD MyBook Pro).
One article today on Maxtor One Touch, older series, was that it would force a drive to 28-bit LBA mode, didn't support large 48-bit, and write to the drive's firmware. Again, avoid these vendor "solutions."
If you set it up and format it in Disk Utility, making sure to select Partition -> Options... APL format table, it should work. Other format types won't work.
Then use SuperDuper or Disk Utility to clone the drive (making sure that "ignore ownership" is OFF (not selected) in the Get Info for the drive volume.
I've got 8 FW cases from OWC and never had a problem with any.
