LCD as opposed to LED

Could someone help me to understand the difference between LCD and LED? I understand that my I-mac has a 24 inch wide active matrix LCD display. I read somewhere that the LED ones do not have mercury, etc. and are supposedly "safer" to use than LCD. This is somewhat alarming.....what are the dangers of using my LCD display?

They are both still LCD displays. The "LED" description applies only to how the LCD panel is backlit. Most LCD backlighting is done with +cold cathode fluorescent lamps+ (CCFL). They are somewhat like the fluorescent tubes that are used in office spaces. They supposedly have environmentally non-friendly stuff inside, if they are disposed of improperly.
Apple is starting to use LEDs for backlighting in some displays. LED backlighting (if done right) is supposed to provide more even lighting, and they do not fade in brightness over time like CCFL. Apple currently uses LED backlighting in the MacBook Pro models and the 24-inch Cinema Display. iMacs, the white MacBook, and even the 30-inch Cinema Display still use CCFL for backlighting.
In terms of being "alarming" or "dangerous" to the user, there is really no concern either way (as long as you are not planning to take apart your LCD panel).

  • MacBook Pro  17 inch:  LCD or Hi-Res LED display?

I plan to upgrade to the new MB Pro 17 inch in the next couple of weeks. Is the hi-res LED screen worth the upgrade over the standard LCD version? I do not need the hi-res, but I understand the battery life and overall image brightness and quality is better with the LED. Do you find the font size to be too small with the hi-res screen? I would appreciate any input or suggestions.
    Thanks.

At the risk of being pedantic, I just want to clarify some of the terms used in your post.
LCD = liquid crystal display. This is not a lighting technology, but is instead the image-forming part of the display through which light shines. All currently manufactured Apple displays use this technology (as opposed to CRT, DLP, or OLED).
LED = light emitting diode. As these are currently used in computer displays, these are not used to form an image. They are used as the light source, particularly in newer displays over the traditional CCFT (cold cathode fluorescent tube) technology, which is basically a long, thin, and fragile "light bulb." LEDs are solid state, have much longer usable lifetimes, are more color-stable, and have better efficiency than CCFTs.
The two technologies, put together, form the majority of the display itself. The LEDs shine light onto a reflective backing, which then bounces the light through the LCD, producing the image you see.
From what I can tell, the 17" screen comes in two types: (1) 1680 x 1050 CCFT, and (2) 1920 x 1200 LED. Both are LCD displays--it is the lighting technology and resolution that are different.

  • Thinkpad T61 LCD dim, go with led upgrade???

Hey I just got a T61 and the LCD screen is very dim/dull when the laptop is plugged in or on highest setting, its nearly as dim as my Lenovo N500 on lowest brightness setting!!!
I know I will need to replace most likely the inverter and possibly the bulb inside, but I am wondering if I should replace the screen as well, and if so is there a 14.1" widescreen for this laptop with a better more crisp screen "like the n500"???
there is an led upgrade kit for the t61 series and i think that would most likely make the screen like new besides the few blemishes that is there now.
    whats everone think?

Your inverter is most likely fine, just a weak bulb, but if you've eveer tried to replace one of these it's not a simple matter, your best option is to replace the screen. As for an LED upgrade, I think that's snake oil, as these systems don't have the necessary electronics to power an LED backlight. I have seen some (very expensive) circuitry that claims to control an LED backlight, but good luck getting it to work with things like your computes brightness settings, if it works at all it will probably be always on as the inverter isn't designed to control led lights.
Perhaps someone has designed a kit that resolves some/all of these problems...   but then you're still back at the point of having to install it in the screen. If you have a samsung screen they are a nightmare to open, you'll probably need to cut the screen open and tape/glue it back together. Other brands aren't as bad, but to do this right you'll need a labritory grade "clean room", because as soon as you open the LCD every partical of dust in the air will stick to the screen and you'll never get it out without replacing it with smear marks. If you do manage to "pull this off", then please take photos to share with the community.
If I were you I'd just buy a screen, there are some good used ones available, and I may have one with a good backlight, but with a vertical line on the screen that I could send you if you cover the postage, perhaps you can use the parts to combine one good one.

  • Can I replace my LCD with a NON-LED LCD??

I have a late 2007 Macbook Pro with the 15in LED LCD. A few months after warranty goes, my screen starts dying on me. It's not the graphics card problem, just a screen problem. Genius bar says it will be about $800 to repair. So I go on ebay and look up screens. My question is, does it HAVE to be an LED screen or can it be a regular LCD? This listing* claims this screen is for the A1226 MBP which is what my MBP is, but the listing says its a "ccfl bulb" LCD and doesn't mention anything about LED. Would this work or not? Thanks guys/girls!

Typically not because the power input to the LED (usually 5 volt) is different than that for a florescent lamp which requires a ballast circuit to work. Also the cable connection design will usually get redesigned between the 2 types and the lighting is part of the LCD screen.

  • LCD Monitor and notification LED's not working, no lid closure recognition on T500

So the subject says most of the problem, here are the symptoms:
The notebook monitor is very faint, with a flashlight in the daik it can be seen though. The monitor is not detected by either graphics card (discrete or internal).
The notification LED's (battery, Bluetooth, etc) are not responding either on the internal or the external sides.  Except the Wireless icon LED works fine, blinks and everything.
When the lid is closed, there was a toggle noise and indication when switching graphics settings.  Closing the lid produces no noticable reaction, either a beep or graphics readjustment.
What I've tried, with no change from the above symptoms
I was in the process of re-installing Windows 7 x64 Ultimate when this occured and have re-installed twice now.  All the drivers are current.
I have checked the BIOS settings, reset them to default and have flashed the latest BIOS.
I have a feeling there is an issue with the cable not being connected or coming loose (except the wireless LED is baffling).
Any suggestions would be great and most appreciated.
    Lenovo T500 2081

One more thing, after reading some more posts and seeing common responses, I thougth I'd narrow it down a bit more. The screen is very dim, need a flashlight and a dark room, but the intro spalsh/post Lenovo screen can be seen, also I can see and interact with the BIOS configuration screen. Also I can see the "welcome to Windows" splash screen, however after that, using both internal and discrete, the screen turns green-ish and I can no longer see anything, even thought the welcome music from windows can be heard.
    Thanks for any help.

  • LCD monitor and AirPort

my new LCD monitor seems to interfere wit airport. How can avoid such interferation in order to employ the monitor with mac mini?

Is the LCD (I would say LED if new as the backlight has changed to almost universally use LED).
located between the mini and the airport? I mean really close and able to stop the signals.. the LCD monitor.. is full of metal shielding.. and wifi will not get through. Move the mini or move the monitor or move the airport to a position where they are not blocked.. the wireless of the mini is on the plastic end with the ports as well as the underside plastic cover. (wireless doesn't get out of the metal). Ensure there is line of sight between the plastic area of the mini rear to the airport with nothing in the way.
Or does the monitor cause issues only when turned on.. ie if you turn off the monitor then the mini works ok.. hard to test that unless you have an old CRT monitor or something to test with.
    Are you using USB3?
I doubt the monitor electronics is the problem.. (as opposed to its metallic nature) .. unless it has a USB3 hub in it. which is unlikely.
But USB3 happens to use a bus speed that is too close to the 2.4ghz band.
So one solution is to use 5ghz.
Another is to buy more heavily shielded cables for usb3 connections.
    http://blog.macsales.com/15990-shielding-resolves-usb-3-0-conflict-with-bluetoot h
Could you be confusing USB3 problem for the Monitor causing wifi issues?
There is another more obscure problem that can happen though.. are you using DSL of any sort, adsl or vdsl or sdsl.. anything to do with phone lines??
Have you actually checked the link speed between the Mini and the airport when the LCD monitor is on or off? Does it change.. what if you move the monitor out of the way does the signal level change at all??

  • T400 LCD problem

hi guys, my t400 lcd does not included led backlight, and i feel it is terribly dim compare to other notebook such as compaq v3000 and hp dv2000, what is going on? i heard someone said t400  lcd without led backlight are good too, but my lcd seems dim even though i switch to screen brightness to the max, it is not totally dark but it looks dim, can you guys help me?

also do you have the switchable graphics card version? if so switch to intel by going to the power saving mode, and see whether the internal LCD still have this problem.
But what you are describing sounds like an issue with the LCD panel itself, you can get a new LCD for around 150 to 200 dollars on the net.

    Thoughts appreciated.

Yes I have tested the YUV and RGB output out of the HDMI on the video card and yes the YUV output is not converted. Now the codecs and color space used along with how the Application draws out will have an effect on that.. However once again I have tested this with many clients and the YUV preview is exactly the same as their DVD preview from their deck. I am sure there are many editors here that will confirm that.
Yes I can confirm that. Look up Colorimeters and what they do. I suggest you start here:
    http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=1454
Do you honestly think that publication and still editors could edit on Computer LCD's if they could not accurately calibrate them? I dont talk to many that use an I/O device for that.
The YUV capability of the LCD has to due to what panel they use and what they program the firmware to do. Samsung often has 2 lines for many of their Monitors. One uses a standard RGB panel used by standard computer monitors and another uses a panel that is used in LCD TV's which will handle both. That is an example of when the YUV support is added to the firmware. Keep in mind hardware devices/ie gear like TV's and Decks have the ability to convert RGB to YUV if that is what they do or vice versa. So I can send a YUV signal to a RGB device but if that RGB device does not have output color tables for YUV then it will process that signal to RGB.
Geforce Cards Support 10 bit. However they only support 10 bit via Direct X and not OpenGL. If an application is written with a Direct X API then you can absolutely have 10 bit color output. Adobe uses Open GL for their API so geforce cards dont output 10 bit. I was just correcting an incorrect statement that Geforce cards cannot output 10bit. BTW Geforce cards can actually output 12bit because the Deep Color standard includes up to 16 bit. This limitation is sctrictly due to the application and not the cards.
The Source on that was a confirmation post by an Nvidia Rep right here in the Adobe Forums. You might also want to read up on Deep Color here:
    http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-670/specifications
"5 - Support for HDMI including GPU accelerated Blu-ray 3D support (Blu-ray 3D playback requires the purchase of a compatible software player from CyberLink, ArcSoft, Corel, or Sonic), x.v.Color, HDMI Deep Color, and 7.1 digital surround sound will be added in a Release 260 driver. Upgrade your GPU to full 3D capability with NVIDIA 3DTV Play software, enabling 3D gaming, picture viewing and 3D web video streaming. See www.nvidia.com/3dtv for more details."
    http://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/faq.aspx
"Deep Color: HDMI 1.3 supports 10-bit, 12-bit and 16-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 8-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification, for stunning rendering of over one billion colors in unprecedented detail"
    Hope that helps.

  • T400 LCD TFT display specifications

    Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone would have on hand or know where to find information on the display specifications for the T400 LCD TFT display (WXGA, LED backlight).
    Specifically I'm looking for:
    Model Name/Manufacturer:
    Display area:
    Pixel Pitch:
    Synchronization
    Horizontal: (kHz)
    Vertical: (Hz)
    Display Color: (24bit, 16bit)
    Cheers,
    J

    Welcome to the forum!
Do I understand correctly that you bought a complete new LCD Assembly? Do you have proof from the seller that it was working properly before you bought it?
Can you see a picture if you use a torchlight over the panel?
A faint dark picture could be a defective LCD cable, inverter/LED card or a defective LCD backlight. Since you see a picture I would rule out a motherboard fuse problem.
    Edit: Richk was faster!

  • Performance issues since upgrade

I am on a late 2011 MacBook Pro and am having severs performance issues since upgrading to Mavericks. I fear my issues may be related to company installed anti-virus (which I cannot remove), but I was hoping someone could look over my EtreCheck for other potential solutions.
One really odd issue I am having, which I cannot seem to find good information for on Google, is at least 4-5 times a day my Mac just stops. No beach ball, no anything, for about 1-5 minutes. Then it's fine. Maybe just me grasping at straws, but it seems related to a when webpage loads a bunch of images? I always use Safari btw, but testing other browsers, like Chrome & Firefox, it happens as well.
I have also removed TotalFinder and have noticed no improvement and still have the above issue.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Types of Display

I own a Santa Rosa Macbook Pro (Silver, 15.4" with a matte LED display). It is a year old. My screen recently started to get patches on it so I went to the Apple Care Center and got my display replaced. Now the problem I have with my new display is that the viewing angles are horrible and the color shifts are worse! I move 10 to 20 degrees to the left or right from the center of the screen and the colors change drastically.
Looking at the inferior quality replacement display... I was happy with my earlier LED display, but I can't get that display back as it has already been shipped out of my city to get scrapped. Now my question is, does the Santa Rosa Macbook Pro come with any other type of panel (apart from LEDs)?
I have a strong feeling that Apple replaced my screen with an Active Matrix LCD instead of a LED screen.
I called Apple Care (India) on the toll free number and it seems that they're a bunch of illiterates because they don't know the meaning of Viewing angles & Color shifts. They actually made me go through the hardware troubleshoot & color calibrations! Its clearly an issue of the type of display that they've used and not a hardware issue.

Ok... I just got some more info on the panel. The part number is 661-4609 and after punching in the code in the terminal I get this: LP154WP2-TLA3
Now I think this is an LED backlit screen (which is what I require), but why am I having problems with the viewing angles on just one side? The Apple service center in my vicinity doesn't know if it is an LED or a CCFL backlit screen!! This is what happens... the moment I move 10-15 degrees to the left of the screen... the opposite end of the display darkens (as if I'm looking at a negative picture... a major color shift is noticeable) but if I move 10-15 degrees to the other side from the center of the screen... the opposite end looks perfect (no color shifts at that end). Can there be a possibility that the screen is defective? Or maybe the display connections are loose?
I have been using this laptop since the past 18 months and I can tell that my previous screen was much brighter and had great viewing angles. It had no color shifts either. (I am a graphic designer so I know about the issues of color shifts in an LCD... I use an IPS panel at home). Also, there is a slight tinge of yellow (Even after trying all possible calibrations).
Is there a way of finding out the part number of the screen that was in my laptop at the time of purchase? Maybe Apple has some kind of an assembly log?
This is the serial number for my laptop: W881902myk0

  • Pavilion dv6-3227cl entertainment notebook powers on but only has a black screen

An HP Pavilion DV6-3227cl Entertainment Notebook, that is approximately 2 years old and is running Windows 7 Home Premium, AMD Vision Premium, will power on but not boot up.  The fan runs and the "caps lock" light flashes once approximately every 4 seconds but all I get is a black screen with no cursor or error messages.  There are no beeps.  The power supply indicator illuminates (white) for about a second, then turns to a dim orange when the battery is installed, but remains white when the battery is removed.  However, the two indicator lights (I'm not sure what they are for) next to the USB port nearest the power indicator light illuminate as follows:  the one on the left (as you are looking at the right side of the notebook) is white; the one on the right is orange.  Both are fully illuminated (not dimly as the power indicator light).  The power indicator light is not as bright as the other white indicator near the USB port.  The notebook has booted up and appeared to be running one time since having this problem started, but I have not been able to get it to boot up again.  I am told the battery is bad (it's my brother in law's notebook), but is it possible the problem is with the power source rather than the processor or motherboard?  I appreciate your comments/advice on this matter.  Thank you.

    Hi fejevitzky,
Your question, "Based upon that, I believe you are telling me you do not think it is the BIOS--is that correct?" Yes, as long as you dont see any "white" light reveal from LCD bezel back side while with blank screen state. LCD bezel is the cover around LCD, most design put LED modeule at the bottom side next to LCD. While back light is not on during boot up sequence, that means system doesnt have chance to get BIOS program running. It also means, it stuck at state of hardware bring up. Normally motherboard related.

  • Bought new iMac 20" Faded Screen

I just picked up the new 20" iMac today, to replace my old Core Duo 20" iMac, and when I got everything booted and got to the Desktop I noticed the icons appeared to be faded. I did a side by side comparison with my old iMac and the icons on my old iMac were very Bright in color compared to my new iMac, anyone else having this issue, btw I tried messing with the brightness..

True. The old G5 17" iMac I had bought my folks 2 years ago was awfully bright out of the box, too. But, that isn't exactly the problem here. What you're probably experiencing is the result of the LCD film type Apple has decided to use on their new 20" iMac. If you look at the specs, it only has a viewing angle of 160 degrees which is even worse than the previous 20" model which had a 170 degree viewing angle.
I live in Boon De'Ville (aka: Myrtle Beach), South Carolina and we don't have an Apple Store, so I can't support my opinion yet. But if Apple is using TN film in their new line of iMac LCDs as oppose to IPS film like their Cinema Displays, then you among many others are in a world of disappointment as I once was/am.
If you're a designer or photographer, you'll notice the following…
Looking at your iMac head on, does your display appear darker at top, and washed out at the bottom? Use a solid color for your desktop image. Does it look like a gradient? If so, then most likely the LCD is a TN film-based matrix.
Because of the cheap parts, TN LCDs are produced alot these days. They are total crap and they are everywhere, like Circuit City, Best Buy, Costco, etc. It would be very hard to find an IPS or PVA LCD monitor, unless you go to a specialized tech store.
People need to be educated about this issue. It's serious. Coming from a much older LG (a beautiful IPS LCD), I never expected LCD displays to head in the wrong direction.
According to the specs, I'm guessing the new 24" iMac does not have this fault, since TN film can not display a 178 degree viewing angle. So, I am guessing the 24" iMac uses the same IPS film as their Cinema Display.
My suggestion would be, go to the Apple Store and see for yourself. Kneel down in front of it as if you were viewing it from your desk chair, so you can get a good idea.
For more info on LCD types, do a Google search. This topic is all over. Also check this link out: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/whichscreen1.htm
