LCD Backight Issue

I have a t-60 with no backlight I have swapped LCD, Inverter, and Cable, any sugestions? Planar? dropping out third story window? Machine type is 2007-49U

hum, hopefully one of the more knowledgable guru or the mod can pitch in here. I have never changed the screen before, right now it seems that the motherboard is having problem, and that can be an expensive motherboard swap for relatively new system like yours. Hopefully, it doesn't come down to that and keep our fingers crossed it is just a loss cable somewhere.

T400 LCD dim issue - Need help!!

I'm having a LCD dim issue with a T400. Have changed the LCD panel, LCD cable and systemboard but still having same issue. If i removed the lcd card, then the display is working fine. I've tested the lcd card in another working unit and it's working as well (means the lcd card is working). I use a working lcd card and plug into this T400 but LCD still dim.
I've try to switch the problematic lcd cable and lcd panel to a working systemboard and it kills the systemboard. Have try to switch a few things but still unable to find the root cause. Urgently need help on this. Any advice will be appreciated.

i suggest uninstalling your current graphic card driver, let windows install its own generic drivers and see if that makes any difference

so basically while in AC power i want full brightness when on battery i want one notch more than the minimum brightness and when laptop-mode is not running i want 2 notches less than maximum brightness.
the battery mode works fine when i unplug the computer but when i replug the AC power it goes to 72 instead of 100. I mean laptop mode is running coz when I remove ac power it goes to 24 again.
Am I doing something wrong?

When you plug in AC power, laptop-mode probably turns down, so LCD brightness is set to 72. It depends on if you have set in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_AC to 0 or 1.

External LCD TV issues with Snow Leopard

Ever since I updated to Snow Leopard, my LCD TV is overscanning the image. If I Maximize Firefox, the outside controls are cropped off. This never used to happen in Leopard. I go to the display settings and disable "Overscanning" and it underscans the image leaving an inch of black space on the screen all around the image, which is more underscanning than it ever used to it.
Also, the image on my LCD seems a bit blurrier. I read about this issue and tried the Text Smoothing tip here http://blog.petersendidit.com/post/blurry-text-on-external-monitor-with-snow-leo pard/ but that didn't change anything either.
Any ideas?

There should be an underscanning slider in the Displays preference you can fiddle with (or is that what you were referring to?).
Does your TV have a "full pixel" mode (or similar words)? Does your TV have it's own overscan/underscan settings?
Which video card? How is the TV connected to that video card?

LCD font issue

Anyone experience this issue, I have 2 external LCD (Dell 24”) monitors and have them connected via HDMI, however one of the monitor’s fonts appears fuzzy..

Second LCD monitor issue with my G5

Ok so I have a used G5 1.6GHz single Powermac.
When I purchased my G5 it didn't have a system installed on it. So I loaded 10.4 onto it and swapped everything from my G4 to the G5 using the G4 as an external Firewire drive. have 2gb of memory inside and it is the correct memory and they have been tested just fine.
Now the second LCD screen I have was working just fine when I had it hooked up to the G4. I have updated my firmware in the G5 to the most current setting. I have reset the PRAM and now I am attempting to figure out if I might have a bad Video card or if my monitor is not working correctly.
I have a Samsung 204B monitor. The issues I have is it blinks off and on when I move things around on the monitor. Sometimes when I open a new window on Safari the screen goes blank. Other times when Im using Photoshop CS2 it will go blank when certain shots come up. It doesn't do it all the time so now I have to figure where to start to troubleshoot this issue.

I am having what sounds like the exact same problem. I have an Apple Cinema display for my main monitor and a ViewSonic 17 inch LCD for my second monitor.
As with photoguy1010, my second monitor frequently blanks out for up to 2 seconds when I click on something that is ont hat screen or try to move a window. But it is not consistent, sometimes it happens frequently, sometimes less often.
I am sure it is not the monitor because the problem happens with a Samsung 17" LCD monitor also and both the ViewSonic and the Samsung work perfectly with my powerbook. I have several times used the same cable with my powerbook and had no problems.
So it seems to me the problem must be in the G5. Is there anything other than the video card that might cause this?

LCD Screen issues w/ Tiger 10.4.11

Hi Everyone,
Been away from these discussions for awhile. But I'm back with some questions.
I have just,recently, updated my G4 to Tiger using archive and install.
Everything has gone great, except some issues (glitches) with my LCD monitor.
I use a LaCie Photon vision 20" LCD panel with an ATI 9600 Mac/PC edition video card installed. Since updating to Tiger, my monitor shows artifacts on screen when I'm scrolling any windows and intermittently showing artifacts while in normal use.
Another issue is that the LCD panel won't sleep. The Mac, itself will power down, but my monitor won't power down with it.
I can deal with this for now as I can always physically turn my monitor off,but the artifacts on screen are starting to get bothersome,especially when working in applications like Photoshop.
Could it be that I need a better video card?
I can't afford it for the time being.
Any ideas?

LCD Screen Issues

So my old laptop died last year after four years of faithful service, in spite of being treated as no laptop should. Since I'd had it for so long, my family got me a (pre-used) new one. Since my old one had been treated like crap, I was determined to treat this new one as if it were my own child. As soon as I saw it, I was madly in love. It was an x100e laptop, compact, powerful, and with bristling new Windows 7 and--at least I think--Intel technology. Since I got a Portal sticker a week later, I decided to call her Gladus (being both an ardent fanboy and a very paranoid man). She had only one problem. Overheating. Usually it wasn't an issue, she'd turn off every few weeks after a long paper or running off to deal with college life, but overall it was fine. One time however after it cooled off I tried restarting it. Halfway through writing a post for help on the school computer, I tried restarting it, and it worked just fine. It did it again a couple months laterwhen I accidently left it on while playing a game I bought of Steam, but again once it had cooled off the screen resumed working. If it were really hot, I'd turn it off, flip it upside down, and turn on a fan to blow the air out the window just in case. I'm not really technologically brilliant, but I made due with logic.
Last night I was up late, deleting game and file opening programs I no longer used (none were Windows or Lenovo programs) and writing. After a few hours I turned it off, though I think I closed the lid so the thing was still on, and chugging away. When I came back, the screen wouldn't work, so I forced a restart, during which time I was assailed by a Window's update that froze at 33%. Again, I had to force a restart. This time I was met by that familiar black screen. I tried airing it, and even cleaning it with what tools I had. Still nothing hours later.
The screen does not start. At all, even though the light turns on, showing the laptop should be working. I remembered during previous incidents hearing an odd sound so I put my ear to just below the keyboard on the left side. The sound resembled a kind of buzz, starting and going off at 2/3rd second intervals. The sound's pauses and pained resumptions--though not the sound itself--put me in mind of a car trying to start. I assume its the fans. Another thing I noticed was when its plugged in, the battery light flashes about once every five seconds. I'm not sure if the device is under warranty (though I'm pretty sure its not), and--like I said--I run off caring for my electronics off logic rather than any in-depth understanding of the device. Fortunately I can job hunt and access Steam from my brother's computer but that laptop had some important files and writing on it I still need to hold onto. I've checked some online sources on similar problems, but no two cases seem identical. Is this something I can fix on my own, or do I need to send my laptop off for repairs? If not, what can I do to fix it? I'm in the middle of job-hunting, so its loss is crippling my online searches and a bit of a hassle.

Thanks for the recommendation. My family's been advising me to send it back to get it checked. I thought I'd post one other observation that slipped my mind: turns out the sound is (almost positively) the fans, which are senting out short, sharp but weak puffs of air. Not sure if that helps at all, but all the same.

There are white squares on my screen at the top. Apple care is telling me I'm out of warranty. This seems like an Apple LCD screen issue. The problem seems to be widespread. How is apple dealing with this. apple care told me it would cost me 260.00

Apple should be fixing this problem for free. It is a hardware issue. Check the Web. A lot of your customers are having the same problem. If I have to spend money to fix this I will be choosing a different cell phone provider

That the problem has happened to someone else, or even to a couple of dozen people, does not make it a "widespread problem". Apple has sold millions of iPhones, so even if hundreds have experienced the problem that's still a very small failure rate.
Your iPhone is out of warranty, so you will need to pay for service. If Apple finds this to be a screen issue, in many Apple Stores they can replace the screen for US $149. If it's not a screen issue or your local Apple Store can not yet replace the screen, then Apple replaces the entire iPhone. Those are their policies, and complaining about it, particular here in these user-to-user forums, will accomplish nothing.
You are free to pay some unauthorized shop to attempt repair, or attempt your own repair, if you wish, though you will void any further support from Apple, for any price, if you do.
There is nothing more anyone here can tell you.

I was wondering where the manual was to fix the LCD screen of a Presario V2570NR? The right connector that connects the screen to the keyboard is disconnected and consquently the screen won't stay up. It falls back.

Sounds like your plastics are cracked.. Look on ebay for a shell with busted electronics.. I've been surprised quite a few times..
As far as manuals, keep googling, persistence pays off.. failing that, look for a similar model.. there isn't too many types of screen hinge assemblies..

Dell SW198FWP 19" LCD Calibration Issues

I have just purchased a 19" Dell Widescreen LCD Monitor (SE198WFP)and I'm not very happy with the display quality. When first hooked up, it's very bright and the image is very washed out. When I use the Apple calibrate utility, I can make the display quality good, but on the first step of the utility, it says to make the oval just barely visible, but the adjustments do not change the intensity of the oval. The other calibration settings do change the display and make it better, but still not as nice as it looks when connected to my Windows PC.
On my old display, LG 17" (not widescreen, 1780U), when I would use the Apple calibration utility, the oval intensity would change with adjustments. Overall, the LG has a better display quality, but it's small and the fonts are a little more fuzzy than the new widescreen Dell.
Both LCD monitors were (are) connected using DVI, not VGA. Does anyone know what is happening?

Those first steps outlined in Apple's calibration procedure are generic and cannot be trusted to apply equally to all monitors. For example, it says to set contrast to its highest setting on the monitor, but that's not always the case that that would be the correct setting for a given monitor. I believe your Dell is recommended to default at a contrast setting of 75. So I would use that instead. Or maybe experiment and try different settings around 75, either plus or minus, and see if that helps.
I think it's more important to try and get the left and right halves of the square containing the oval to be as indistinguishable from one another as possible, more so than trying to get the oval to disappear, which I couldn't get my monitor to do either, for what it's worth. Good luck.

LCD brightness issue

I've installed archlinux on my laptop, everything works well except the brightness control.
The screen originally has 11 brightness levels, but when I either press Fn+F6/F7 key or use gnome-power-manager to adjust brightness, it always skips a level.

current: 100
I can only get level 20 36 52 68 84 and 100
The problem also exists in console mode.
I tried adding video module to blacklist, then brightness cannot be adjusted at all.
However, I never get this problem in openSUSE, all 11 levels are available.

Hmmm...I found this on the nvidia forums:
I have a Samsung R700 laptop and my brightness stopped working after installing the restricted drivers. This is how I fixed it.
Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a virtual console. Once you are in this console I think different video drivers are active so the following worked for me to adjust brightness.
Logged in and ran the following command:
echo -n 70 > /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness
then logged out and pressed Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go back to X
It's possible your brightness key on your laptop may work straight after you press ctrl-alt-f1 and you won't have to login and do the acpi stuff.
Also I have a startup script to set my brightness to a fixed value before X starts. It's not ideal but it's the only solution I could find that worked for me until the drivers are fixed!

M30-113: Battery and LCD dots issue

Dear all,
I have got satellite m30-113, recently several points started to appear in the screen, seven of the points are distinguishable, and 14 of the dots are so fine.
Whenever I try to charge my laptop, it gives sound. They said the battery might be defected.
I am still in my international warranty.
Shall I change my laptop, or I'll get my screen and battery changed?
my problem is I can wait until it's fixed cause I have lots of work using it, I live in Syria; and I want to know the maintenance procedure.

A vote for the MBP Retina

For quite a few months I monitored these forums to see how the new retina MBP would go over. I do know that forums are usually the places were people with problems appear. Rarely do you get people showing up and saying everything is just great. So you need to take these forums with a grain of salt and use them to guide your decision making.
So I followed the heat thread, the burn-in thread and a number of others.
I'm a programmer by trade. I use VMWare Fusion every day and I often need tons of RAM. Flash disk is also almost required these days as I need to switch between things quite quickly. So when the retina MBP was introduced my drool production went up about a thousand fold!   I've been working on the following models:
A 2008 MBP pro 17" with a core2duo, 4gb RAM and a 256gb drive
Sold that and got:
A 2010 MBP pro, high-res 15" display core i7 with 8gb of RAM.
In some ways the 2010 MBP was a dream machine. The 8gb of RAM made it possible for me to open 2-3 VMs under Fusion and the high-res display made up for the loss of the 2 inches of display real estate when stepping down from the 17".
The battery life on the 2010 sucked. I NEVER got more than a couple of hours out of it.   I also noticed that even after a nice fresh clean Lion install with few programs and processes the processors worked hard. This machine got hot and burned through battery power like a million candle spot light. Still it was a great machine and I did millions of lines of code on that machine.
But since the introduction of the retina MBP with its 16gb of RAM and the big flash disk I've been making a mess of my desk whenever I visit Apple's web page. I was trying to temper that with a belief that as a first gen re-work it is bound to have some issues. So I'd go over to BestBuy and play with the machines there. I often got strange looks from the Apple Best Buy guy and I think he sort of came not to like me because unlike most of his customers I was in the system prefs changing settings playing with terminal windows and I don't think he appreciated what I was doing. I didn't care. I wanted to get a feel for the machine.
So last month I made a pitch to my boss to let me do an upgrade. He finally relented and about 2 weeks ago I placed my order. My MBP retina arrived on Monday. So right off the bat I need to qualify my statements here with the fact that I've only had mine about 3 days. Certainly not long enough to find all of the problems. But here is my impression since getting this machine.
I opted for the 15" retina, 2.6gHz, 16gb RAM, 768 Flash Drive.
When I received the unit on Monday I loaded it up with my editors, compilers, programs from the AppStore, music, etc.   Of my 768 I'm down to about 210gb free which is plenty. I was expecting to use more.
The first thing I must confess about this new machine is how quiet the processors are. I installed iStat Menus which I like so I can monitor how my MBP is doing. With my 2010 just running a single VMWare Fusion VM had the processor at about 30% and the fan running say 3500 RPM. It was hot and noisy. This new machine, as I type this post has two VMs open. A Windows 7 32 bit, and a Windows 7 64 bit. I'm also listening to iTunes, I have mail, google chrome, calendar, contacts and a number of other apps open. As I sit here the CPU activity almost non existent. The rMBP isn't even struggling in the least with this load. In direct comparison my 2010 MBP would have 30-40% CPU load and the fans would be screaming away, not at full bore but really loud. But here I sit with this new machine and it is quiet, only very slightly warm and I'm doing what I "normally" do.
For this alone the upgrade was CLEARLY worth it to me. The computing horsepower in this machine is insane.
My unit came with (heaven forbid) the LG display that everyone in the "burn-in" thread says is HORRIBLE and some of these guys have gone through 5 or 6 replacements to solve their burn in problems. I don't doubt they've had these issues. I don't doubt they exist. I have none of them. This display is freaking amazing!
Now I've heard it said that the IR (image retention, ghosting, burn-in) can take weeks to appear. So I'm not out of the woods yet. But at this point in time the display is simply awesome and with the background I choose I see ZERO ghosting. I'll say it again. This display is freaking awesome!
Now I'm not a graphic artist and I cannot and will not try to tell you if my color point is correct for the white or not. What I can tell you is that this display looks good to me. I can read even the smallest text easily. The clarity is simply amazing. I'm 55 and have certainly reached that age where my eyes work overtime. I wear progressive glasses and I'm not having any trouble at all with the display.
The only thing I could point a finger at is that this new retina display is bounded by a black area that for my eyes is the same color as my background. I've found myself trying to slide windows into that area and being shocked that they are disappearing (because the display physically ends there). This is just something to get used to or I could set my background to be a little lighter. Anyway this is a pretty damned small negative if I must say so.
Ok on heat. As I mentioned above this machine just idles along 99% of the time so there is little heat being produced. I'm not doing nothing either. In my Windows 7 VMs I'm running compilers and when the are cranking on code the Windows CPU is showing 100% while the rMBP registers this as like 5%. Not sure I understand how that is working yet but I see no speed loss in my VM and yet my rMBP is just coasting even though Windows is registering 100% CPU.
The airflow on this new computer is to take air in from the sides and dispense the hot air out a vent in front of the display. I personally think this is a design flaw. I think this may be causing some of the burn in/ghosting issues because the computer is venting hot air right at the display. I personally would have vented it out the back beneath the screen but perhaps the latch as it is designed for the rMBP may make that impossible.
But as an engineer I have an idea for a way to fix the heat on the LCD panel issue. It would not take much to make a small plastic piece that sat in that hinge area and took the outgoing air and sent it to the sides way from the panel. I'm not gonna design this but if the heat really is the issue this simple $2 piece would probably save the panel.
So my take is this:
For me personally and acceptance of anything is a very personal choice, the retina MBP is exactly what Apple bills it to be. The best, more amazing laptop I've ever owned. It is cool (temp wise), fast (amazingly fast), small, thin, light, has an amazing screen visually and I predict this computer will satisfy my needs for quite a few years to come.
I will not berate or downplay the issues some have had. I honestly believe there have been bad retina MBPs. Bad screens. Heat issues. Failures. They happen and those people have suffered and I hope Apple will make it right for them. But I'm one to say that my unit more than satisfies my goals and intents. Like any piece of machinery it has its small issues. I'm sure my screen will have some IR. I'm sure my unit will get hot but so far it doesn't work even 1/4 as hard as my older 2010 MBP.
So my point to everyone is make your own choice. Do not let the threads you see in these forums convince you that your retina MBP will be problem ridden. Just because other people see and are bothered by a problem you might not be and the problem may not exist on your retina MBP.
For me, this machine is simply amazing. I can only hope my panel does not suddenly start to show massive ghosting. I do plan to keep a close eye on that and on the heat. But right now I'm not expecting issues.

I need to add just one more thing and that is on battery life. Last night I sat with the rMBP on my lap installing software, surfing the web, answering emails for close to 4 and 1/2 hours. At the point I took it back to the charger it still was showing a computed battery time remaining of 3.5 hours.
Today I had two VMs open and took the machine of the charger and sat outside with my dogs for about 30 minutes. During this time I was working in both VMs, editing and compiling code. My battery life estimate showed a good solid 4 hours.
This is roughly 6 times greater than what I had with my 2010 MBP and it too had a SSD. I am not sure why but this retina MBP just seems to not work as hard doing anything that caused my 2010 MBP to struggle.
While the battery life is certainly better than I expected it is clear that load can change that very rapidly. So I think I still need to visit clients with an external battery or charger in hand. But I don't think I will be quite so scared that my laptop will simply run out of power before I can even get it plugged in.

White spot on my Retina MacBook Pro?

Hello everyone again. I have a problem with the display (again, sadly ). This time, it isn't ghosting. The panel I have is the second generation LG panel display, or SJA2. While I was browsing on the web, I noticed a white spot visible on bright colors. I searched other forums, and apparently, it isn't a dead pixel, but another bad case of LCD Muras. I'm getting to the point where I'm tired of having to deal with flawed Apple products again. I paid a huge premium for this machine and I expected solid quality for this machine. It's ridiculous. I have heard too many issues with Retina MacBooks over the past 2 years since it debuted. And since my warranty ran out a year ago, I'm out of luck. Even worse, I didn't get AppleCare, which was my fault. I took great care of this laptop, and I never abused it, pinched it, threw it, or dropped it. I don't see how something like this could happen. So, please, I need as much help as I can get. I'm not knowledgeable on computers.
1) Do Samsung Panels suffer from the same problem as well? (I know they are not prone to ghosting, so that isn't a worry here.)
2) Is there anything else I can do to fix the LCD Mura issue, or am I going to have to replace the display completely? What else can I do?
3) Does anyone who suffered from the same issue as I have know what's going on, or know what's causing the LCD Muras? A manufacturing defect?
4) Would it be safe to buy a replacement Samsung screen from Ebay? I have to be careful just because getting a replacement doesn't guarantee an immediate fix.
Any help on this issue would be appreciated. I'll try to post a photo of the issue when I can. Thanks.
