LCD display not working (blank screen)

One day old 15" G4 (the latest model). No major changes to configuration; only basic software installed (Adium, Messenger, Firefox, Remote Desktop).
The LCD display stopped working during normal operation (web browsing) and I assumed it was a power management issue (I was running on a low battery). I unplugged all devices, plugged it in and rebooted (per instruction manual); same issue.
Since then, I've zapped the PRAM, booted with "R", reset the NVRAM, and reset the PMU. I also tried loading the setup CD with the "Option" to get the hardware check; this may have given me helpful data but I can't see the display so I'm not sure (read: display doesn't work even when booting from CD).
External monitors work fine still. The Mac boots and everything loads perfectly. I can adjust the screen brightness on the LCD using the F1 and F2 keys; the display responds by varying the backlight but it is not rending the GUI; it remains black (or dark gray, really).
I'm experienced with computers but this is my first time working on a Mac, so I'm completely unfamiliar with how to troubleshoot these things. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Hi
This is exactly what has happend to my PowerBook a few days ago. Its only just out of warranty too. Man I wish I bought Apple care!!!!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, could you tell me what it was? Was it the inverter? I'm miles away from an Apple store (yes I know I live in the UK and its a small island, but its still miles) and woulf like to try and resolve it myself.
Works fine on an external LCD. Tried everything!
May get my screwdriver out.

  • Zen Touch, LCD Display not working at all, but player is f

So I'm on the bus, listening to my Zen Touch, it's working fine, the LCD is working fine. Everything is dandy. Few songs later, I pull it out of my pocket, the LCD is blank. But the player is still going. I can change songs, adjust volume, play all randomly etc etc, but I'm working blind, cause there is nothing on the display whatsoever.
It was a dry day, so it wasnt moisture damage or anything. And I didnt drop it, or bang it. It went from working fine, to going in my pocket, to not working. Really strange.
I'm sure its just defecti've, but I leave for a week long vacation in just under an hour (good timing eh? works fine for 8 months and then bam, 6 hours before I leave the country...ugh **bleep** karma), and I'm praying theres a simple fix I'm just missing. I already tried multiple restarts and resets, and I even charged it for a few hours, thinking the battery was just getting weak. But no dice. I doubt anyone can help me, but I figured it's worth at least a shot.Message Edited by myname on 0-24-2005 05:07 AM

If it won't display anything at all, even after a reset, it's likely there is a hardware problem. You could connect the player to the PC and update the firmware, but I suspect it'll be the same after that, unfortunately.

  • Sort by Last Visited & Sort by Most Visited not working - blank screen

Recently installed FF 4.01 and can't get a history listing with "Sort by Last Visited" and "Sort by Most Visited" - in both instance all I get is a blank screen. I get full history listings with the other sort options, View Date & Site OK but not on last and most visited.
    Running FF 4.01 on WinXP - SP2

I finally got it working - by a fluke. I accessed the drop down history at the navigation arrows by right clicking to check out if that was working and the next time I tried the view by last visited in the sidebar it worked as it's supposed to. So it seemed that it just needed a jump start.

  • LCD Display Not Working

I have a T60, the bottum 1/3 of the screen suddenly is not displaying anything.  There are funky lines across the width of the screen but only come up about a third.  I haven't been able to find anything else wrong.  The screen is fine when in a docking station or projected.  Only the laptop's screen seems affected.

    bags4440, welcome to the forum,
hopefully you have warranty, what you describe says to me that you have a defective display. Sorry

  • Macbook Display Not Working (Black screen)

I have a Macbook 13.3" and I recently sent my screen in to get fixed after I dropped it. The hardware is fine, but I tried to turn on the computer and everything's working fine, but the screen won't turn on.
I can hear sound, I have tried using the screen light (increase and decrease), and the screen itself does light up a bit, but not enough to even consider it on; it looks black, regardless, just a lighter tone of it.
This leads me to believe that something is wrong with the signaling, since it is obvious that my screen's inverter is providing the screen power.
    What is wrong?

why not just take it back to whoever "fixed" it and get them to fix it for real, NO LEMONS!

  • Facetime will not work, blank screen

I just got the new iphone 4. Facetime will not run on it. OS is updated, phone is not jailbroken. Every time I try to make a call via facetime, I can see myself in the little box in the corner, but there is no picture on the rest of the screen. It's blank.  On the other side of the call, my friends can see one frozen frame of me but no video or audio. After 30 seconds the phone says 'call failed.' The worst part is that every time I try to make a call to someone, facetime freezes my internet. I've never had internet problems before, but now, if I try to put a call through facetime, I lose all internet signal and have to reset the router to get internet back on in the house. Any ideas? Or should I simply take the phone back?

Click on the link provided by stedman1 and follow the troubleshooting steps there.
You can also try to Reset Network Settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
You can also try resetting your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears. Once the Home screen redisplays, make sure your Wifi is on, and try again.
    Cheers,

  • When receiving email, Thunderbird freezes and displays "Not Responding" in screen header. Adds popstate folder to account.

I'm running Thunderbird 31.6.0 on Windows 8.1 with BitDefender 2013.
    PROBLEM:
When getting email, Thunderbird freezes and displays "Not Responding" in screen header.
When TB is closed then reopened, a popstate folder (popstate-1.dat) is added to account. A new popstate folder appears with each crash/freeze, and as long as they are not deleted, they pile up with unique numbers (popstate-1.dat, popstate-2.dat, etc.).
    (see attached screenshot)
NOTE: I've included troubleshooting details below for all the fixes I tried, thinking it might be helpful to anyone who has a similar problem and is thinking about going down those paths. Ultimately, it seems that FIX ATTEMPT 5 is the winner.
    ==================================
    FIX ATTEMPT 1:
Following the suggestion in this archived mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1026288, I restarted Thunderbird in Safe Mode (Help > Restart with Add-Ons disabled...), checking the "Disable all add-ons" and "Reset toolbars and controls" and clicking "Make Changes and Restart" button.
In Add-Ons Manager, BitDefender Toolbar now appears to be disabled.
    (see attached screenshot)
    But the problem persists.
    FIX ATTEMPT 2:
Following the suggestion in this archived mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1016811, I clicked Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder button. This opens a File Explorer window for 3I58b9dq.default (this is the "profile" folder) which contains panacea.dat and folderTree.json files.
I changed file names to panacea-changed.dat and folderTree-changed.json (rather than deleting them, in case I need to restore them), and I reopened Thunderbird.
This did not solve the problem -- and, furthermore, the profile folder seems to have automatically generated new panacea.dat and folderTree.json files to replace those for which I changed the filenames.
    FIX ATTEMPT 3:
Following the suggestion in this mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1044774, I restarted Windows 8.1 in safe mode with networking enabled (using these instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/.)
TB does not crash when Windows runs in safe mode, but the aspect ratio of my display is distorted; everything's really big and stretched horizontally, and my two displays are mirrored rather than extended. Running Windows perpetually in safe mode is not the ideal fix.
QUESTION 1: I understand that troubleshooting is supposedly done best in safe mode — What might I do in safe mode to diagnose the Thunderbird problem?
    FIX ATTEMPT 4:
This article https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#Symptoms, suggests that problems with Thunderbird associated with BitDefender can be solved by uninstalling and re-installing BitDefender.
Not really comfortable uninstalling and re-installing, I disabled Bitdefender (Settings button > Antivirus button > Shield tab > On-Access Scanning toggle Off) to see if that would work. It did not fix the problem.
QUESTION 2: Would uninstalling BitDefender be any different than disabling it?
    FIX ATTEMPT 5:
Create a Bitdefender Exclusion for the Thunderbird folder:
Settings button > Antivirus button > Exclusions tab > Excluded files and folders link > Add button > navigate to Thunderbird folder (c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\thunderbird) > Both radio button > Add button > OK button
THIS FIX DID THE TRICK! YAY!

FIX ATTEMPT #5 above did the trick, and now I see that it was the chosen solution for a similar post of the same problem at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1044774

  • S10 would not boot, blank screen, hardware problem??

    hello all,
my s10 was working perfectly the previous night, but the next day when i press the power button, the screen was blank.
When I press the power button, the blue light came on to indicate power, and also the wireless light came on.
The fan also started up, but then it turns off, leaving a blank screen, it seems nothing was booting or working except for those 2 lights. I have tried it with battery in and out and also with AC. But it still doesn't work.
Is it a hardware (like maybe circuit or harddrive) problem? As when I decide to hold down and press on power button when i found out is not working, the screen flickers and the computer shuts down.
I got some important school work, last yr of high school, hopefully someone can help me to get my computer running again, is only 5 months old =[
    Thank you, canicecy =]

I will propose you something close to one thing done but slightly different and tried (and worked) many times and with many different laptops having the same issue as yours. You need to Reset any possible electrostatic Charge.
take off the battery and the power cable (this means no contact to any current)
press continuously the power button for 10 seconds.
    plug back everything and retry
if it persists you can try it a second time but if after this it's still the same you must call the hotline and repair you unit as long as you are under warranty.

  • Caller display not worked since June 2014

On 26/06/14 I reported a fault (VOL-**********) that the caller display function had stopped working following a thunderstorm in the area. According to the fault status this fault is showing as being corrected and closed on 02/07/14 when in fact the fault still exists. I tested the line using the BT test socket with a new BT2000 phone and this displayed ‘incoming call’ therefore my internal wiring is not part of the problem. I have also dialled the test code *#234# to check if the caller display service is available and confirmed that it is. I then tested the new BT2000 phone on the neighbour’s telephone line and this showed the caller ID for incoming calls, as did my other telephone as well; therefore none of the telephone handsets are at fault. Three times BT have informed me that the fault has been fixed and yet I still have no caller display. Reading through the forums it would appear that other people have encountered similar issues and that the problem is at the exchange, “An Openreach engineer discovered that the RS232 burst transferring the CLI number up the line was too weak and he then went down to the exchange to investigate. He then discovered that the fault lay in the ADSL device which lies between the analogue exchange equipment and the outgoing line”.
I’m surprised to see that BT are taking so long to trace a fault in their system last raised 5/8/2014 (VOL012-**********) and that they haven’t sent an engineer to the property or to the exchange to check the problem.
My patience is wearing thin over this problem with my Caller Display not working as it started in mid June. I’m also becoming less enthusiastic about BT and find it harder to recommend them to others.
My last message from BT, tells me that it should be back to normal on the 8 August. However, it is still not working. Their message that my phone should be back to normal now and if it isn’t report this to BT, is ridiculous. If an engineer had investigated what was causing the fault and found it, then he would have fixed it. However, either an engineer has not investigated the fault or BT is not competent in fixing their own service faults and makes these statements with crossed fingers?

An engineer called yesterday and told me that he had been asked to test the line for a voice fault not a Caller Display fault. However, his testing revealed there is no line fault, CLI signal is strong and he was happy that the new BT2000 phone (bought after the lightning strike) is working properly. (This phone had also been tested on a neighbour’s phone line where it displayed the callers number). He also found that this same BT2000 phone on my line was not displaying the Caller’s number (CLI), but couldn’t offer any reason why.
I conjectured with him that these tests must bring the problem down to a corrupted CLI signal which does not allow the phone to understand the phone number being sent.
When the lightning struck the phone line back in June, it blew the telephone connection in the back of the Sky Box with a flash and bang (telephone cable now removed from the Sky box). It shorted the Openreach Faceplate (now replaced) so that the phones and broadband stopped working and it caused the phone to light up and react as it does when a call comes through.
Now isn’t it possible that the lightning also travelled along the copper wire to the green cabinet just outside the house and damaged something there which is corrupting the CLI signal, but which does not not show up when the voice line is tested? If not, then there must be a problem further back in the infrastructure, possibly in the Exchange, that is causing a corrupted signal to be sent to my phone?
He told me that another team would have to investigate the Caller Display fault as he was instructed to look into a voice issue and as a field engineer he was not able to investigate any problem that might be in the Exchange. I don’t know whether this Exchange Team would be able to investigate a problem in the Cabinet if nothing is found in the Exchange or can that only be done by a field engineer? He told me to contact BT again as he’d done all that he had been instructed to do and they would have to instigate a fault team to further investigate the problem.
When all this is considered we have the basic problem that BT are unable to provide me with a Privacy and Caller Display Service that I have been paying for, because of a fault in their infrastructure. How much longer is it going to take before they correct the problem that’s been going on since June 2014?

    Hi,
I am using Lenovo G510 Laptop. First I was getting an error of bad signature file which was stopping windows from loading.
I tried to fix it. I changed my BIOS Boot mode from UEFI to Legacy, and then system restarted. After the restart Display is totally black, like the Laptop is powered off. Hard disk light is on, battery power light also turns on when I turn on the laptop. But not showing any display. I've also tried by pulling out the battery and then pressing the power button for 30-60 seconds and then turning laptop on direct power. But it ain't working too.
Please any help in this matter will be highly appreciated.
