LCD Projection & photo resolution / DPI

I am creating a slideshow from some older photograph which I intend to show with an LCD projector or through a standard TV set. I am scanning the photos into the computer. Is there an ideal resolution that I should use or at least a general "rule of thumb" that I can apply for this sort of end use?
Thanks

So, there is no reason to go through the extra step of resizing the photo to 300 dpi before moving it into a 300 dpi document? Photoshop Elements does the resize for you without losing image quality?

  • Acceptable and Quality Still Photo Resolution for HDV Documentary

I've scanned through several pages of posts on photo resolution here, but I haven't actually found a simple answer to a beginner's question. Two, actually:
    1. If someone is supplying you with still photo prints for scanning and use in a documentary (shot in HDV, edited on FCP5), is there a particular size print that you should ask for? Does the broadcast venue (theatrical, TV, etc.) have any relevance?
    2. If someone is scanning photos and sending you a CD with them, what are the specs (size, resolution, etc.) you should ask for? And are there "minimum acceptable" specs and "preferred, high quality" specs?
    Thanks.

Having worked on several long-form historical docos with hundreds of source photo scans, I'd highly recommend getting the originals in as high a resolution as you can (at least 300 DPI), and getting the entire photo scanned. You just never know when you need to apply pans or zooms or crop into a particular area to improve the edit, and there are many simple ways to prep the selected photos for import.
The simplest is just to do the scaling & cropping in FCP. It will do a fine job of this, but if it turns out most of the photos will be static, you can waste computer resources by importing unnecessarily-large images. As mooblie pointed out, you strictly only need enough resolution to prevent scaling up past 100%, as this will create pixelated lower quality output.
The most common way to prep scans is in Photoshop, where you can scale the image to a desired pixel size very easily. I'd still leave the image at its natural frame size (as scanned), so you have the most creative choice when you are framing it in the timeline using FCPs cropping & motion tabs tools.
If you've got lots of photos and lots of pans & zooms, consider using one of the third-party tools that will help with this, such as Photo to Movie from LQ Graphics, Moving Picture from StageTools, or even the plugin for FCP I wrote to help with the docos I mentioned above. It's called Pan Zoom Pro and you can see about it and download a demo here: http://www.lyric.com/fcp-plugins/index.htm#pzp .

  • Using a Macbook 2008 with Lion 10.7.5, how can I project photos/keynote on smart tv screen? Macbook will not upgrade beyond Lion.

Using a Macbook 2008 with Lion, 10.7.5, how can I project photos/keynote presentation on my smart tv? It is connected to tv with mini-dvi/hdmi cable, but I don't know how to display the images. Thanks!

Did you switch the TV's input to the HDMI port you are using with the computer? Did you open Displays preferences to see if a second screen is displayed and then check the box to mirror to the TV screen? Did you search Google for any help links on how to do what you are trying to do?

  • Ideal resolution (dpi) for standard 24"x36" posters?

There has long been debate at the various studios I worked for regarding ideal poster size resolutions.
For 24"x36" posters, some studios work in full 300dpi. Others find that resolution too demanding on the computer, and work at half-size (150dpi). Then I was told printers will print movie posters at 72dpi so anything above that is wasted anyway.
So I come to the experts... what resolution are most 24"x36" Hollywood posters done in?
    Thanks!

If it goes to a sheet fed press, probably never. Most color printing is done in China now, and though they do remarkable work in the high resolution area, I suspect 175 would be a fair working resolution. I say this as one previous poster here stated 150 was fine for him. But he did not state if that was as a designer or if it was as printing company. At 175, this may be the line count the poster is printed at, and a possibly good match for both party's needs. And if the poster prints at a lower resolution, then both parties have a higher quality file than can be lowered for printing. Thus, you have a very good chance of a win-win situation at this point, and everyone is happy.
If I remember right, at 8 bit, 2' x 3' in 300 ppi is around 150 mgb. So the lower resolution makes the file a lot more managable before the CMYK separations are done.
I hope all goes well with the poster design.

Sorry, my bad for not being clearer with my question.
What I wanted to know, essentially, was if there was any point working in a document that was 24"x36" @ 300dpi? In other words, is it likely that I will EVER be printing the poster at that size and resolution? Because PSD's can get ridiculously big very fast at those settings.
Without knowing what the printing method will be in the end... heck, the client may want to handle the printing himself... my question pertains more to the working file and how much resolution is considered overkill.
    Has a movie studio ever printed a 24"x36" poster @ 300 dpi?

  • Photo resolution on iweb

Does anyone know how to improve the photo resolution on iweb? Can i upload pics from iphoto to iweb with original file size?

Does anyone know how to improve the photo resolution
on iweb? Can i upload pics from iphoto to iweb with
    original file size?
Yes, you can. Not sure why you would want to do this. Web images tend to have to balance image quality with download speed. But sure, you can have your original photo used in iWeb. Just drag it from iPhoto directly into iWeb. Then open up the Inspector and click on the Rulers tab. The click "Use original size". That will be your original photo.
If you make any other changes to your photo like shrinking it down to a little square or rotating it or putting a frame around it, then iWeb will convert your photo to a PNG file and subsequently recompress the image for the PNG file. That will again lower your resolution.

  • Lumia 820 Photo Resolution Problem

    Hi,
Can anyone help me solve why i cannot change the photo resolution on my Lumia 820?
When i check them on a PC they always come out at either 800x600 on 4:3 ratio or 800x450 on 16:9 ratio.
It's driving me mad there is no option in the photo settings or anywhere else in the phone to change this.
I read on another post that it can be related to skydrive uploading, although I have skydrive disabled and this problem still persists.
    Please Help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

How did you download the photos to your pc? Photos uploaded to Skydrive are reduced in resolution by default unless you change the setting to Best Quality which requires wifi. To change this, goto Settings>Applications>photos+camera>Skydrive>Photos> Best quality
Other option to download high res is to connect phone to pc using USB.

  • Nokia Lumia 820 change photo resolution

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me why can't I change the resolution in the photo camera? If I choose video I can select resolution, but on photo I cannot, there is no option. This is not ok, my phone took the last photos both in landscape and portrait at 1280x720 / 720x1280 resolution. If it has 8mpx why can't I benefit from this res?? who from Nokia had this brilliant idea of taking out the option to select the photo resolution???

I presume you are uploading your photos to Skydrive. The phone automatically reduces the resolution before photos are uploaded. To dwnload your photos at full resolution you need to either connect to pc via usb or change the auto upload settings as follows. Goto settings>backup>photos>best quality (needs wifi)

  • Projected photos too dark

We had a large audience (150+). Running iPhoto Slideshow we turned on the digital projector, but found that the projected photos were way darker than those displayed on the Powerbook screen. What could we have done to render the projected photos the same color and brightness???

I also have the same problem, which is very annoying, since all my colleagues (using a PC) show nice pictures and videos and mine are just not recognizable! The good display of the MacBook Pro can not compensate for such a flaw, as what counts is how your presentation looks like when you project it.
I have observed this problem many times with different projectors and Macs, so it is a general problem.
I changed the VGA color setting, as well as the projector contrast and brightness but it does not improve things much - objects from such as boxes, lines and text on color look normal, but any picture inserted into the presentation looks very dark and with low contrast (also true for videos). And the nice backgrounds in Keynote just do not look nice any more when you project them....
would be happy to hear some ideas or solutions if there are any

  • Photo resolution & movies?!

So, I'm confused. I can create a very nice page, but there are a couple things that I can't figure out:
    1. Photo resolution. My photos seem to automatically downsample (the large version) to 800x600. That's great if I want them to, but what if I don't?!
-related: is it possible to link a file? ie "add link to download"?
    2. Movies cannot be put on a photo grid. That *****. I take pictures and movies with my digital camera, and I want to show both in a gallery.
    3. It's unclear to me how updating works. That is, if I publish to a folder, and I update a page or add a new one, do I have to do everything again? ie publish to folder and upload the entire thing? That seems like quite a waste of bandwidth!

  • Photo resolution on new computer

I have noticed that the photo resolution on my new system is much smaller than on my old G4 iBook. The original size of the photos was in 1-2 meg size with great resolution. Now they are 40-50K. When I export them to a digital photo frame they are really poor. What have I done wrong?

    Yes
Quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop (after completing everything successfully you will delete this library) and connect the two computers (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library form the pictures folder form the old machine to the same place in the new machine (a single drag - do not move pieces of the library) and launch iPhoto on the new machine - you should be fine - and once you are trash the bad iPhoto library from the desktop

  • IDVD slideshow photo resolution

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
From previous posts, it seems that iDVD photo resolution is always less than viewing a iPhoto slideshow while in that application.
    So here is my question:
When I use the option of sharing the photos, iDVD creates a "slideshow" folder with the photos in .JPG,on the DVD. If I copy the folder to my desktop, open, then the resolution is great when viewing on my G5. So if the iDVD app and my verbatim media can create/support these images, why is the iDVD slideshow resolution so poopy?

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

OK, but why so lousy even when viewing the DVD using
    my G5?
An NTSC TV set has less than 640x480 pixel
    resolution
    - you computer monitor has more than 4 times this
    resolution.
You are looking at an image with less than 640x480 pixel quality displayed on a much larger pixel count monitor.
Sorry, but what you see is what you get.
DVDs produced by iDVD are best viewed on a TV set. If you are viewing them on a computer - DO NOT set the playback display to 'Full Screen' - use 'Normal' size (which will display the video in a 640x480 window).

  • Projected image resolution

When projecting a screen image of a PP CS6 image via a projector, the image resolution on the screen is very low. The audience can not read the details shown on the projected image.  The laptop is set to maximum resolution already. The OS I use is Windows 7 Home Premium on a Toshiba 64 k. Is there any Windows setting to increas projected image resolution? Thanks for the help.

What's your movie's resolution and frame rate, interlaced or progressive? Premiere will create and export or render to almost any video format if you ahve the codecs.
Let's say your movie is full HD, uncompressed, 1920x1080P. This is unlikely since hard drives and CPUs can choke on uncomrpessed codecs. So your movie was probably transcoded to a more friendly codec. I know nothing about Windows media but on a Macintosh we'd probably use H.264. If it's still in full HD dimensions, your installed video card is simply not capable of playing it back at full resolution. The movie is being scaled down, pixels are being squished and thrown away, to fit on your card's maximum screen size. As your 1080 movie, reduced about 30% to 740 to 760, comes into your upscaler, it's being blown back out to 1080. But the information has been lost. All your upscaler can possible do is make the blobby parts bigger; it cannot replace the pixels that have been lost.
Build your movie in a 720 format. Make sure all of your graphics are clearly legible on your editing screen by looking at it from a distance that simulates the screen's environment. Or, better, hook up the projector to your editor to preview the results.
Or use a device that is capable of playing full 1080 HD.

  • Project photos missing

I just assigned a location to a projects photo's (254) and now they do not appear in the project (browser window) they still show up if i look under the photo section in the library though. Can anyone suggest how i get them to reappear in my project folder again.
    Andrew.

Click the "x" in the filter field at the top right of the Browser. Filters are sticky -- whatever you set for any Project or other container is retained the next time you view the contents of that container. It seems (hard to know for sure ) that your Project is being filtered for images with places assigned.
The little icons in the search field (they are Aperture Badges) inform you of the type of filters currently present.
