  • T60 suddenly switches off, will not power on again, DVD drive related?

I have searched and searched for this, and although finding many "T60 will not power up" I haven't
    found any with this twist.
My T60 is ~2 years old, and the problem just started recently. Working on battery one day, the laptop
suddenly died - like instant loss of power. I could not turn it on again. One strange thing though:
When I removed the battery and re-inserted it, the batt-icon-light came on briefly (a blink). If I then pushed the power button it lit up for 1 sec and then went out, not booting. Repeating it, without removing the battery, it didn't light up.Ok, thinking maybe the power supply was dead, I took it completely apart, removing also the harddrive and the DVD drive. By chance I then saw that it had "fixed itself". I resembled it and it worked again, powering up like nothing had happend.
Then it happened again yesterday. I read in here about the "push power 10 times, hold power down 30 sec" etc, but had no luck with that. Again, when I inserted the adapter cable the light came on (power plug + batt light) but when pushing the power button they went off, and if I removed and reinserted the plug same thing again.
I then read about removing HDD and DVD drive, and that did it! So, it happened again today and this time I just removed the DVD - and it booted again.
So, after this loong description here I hope that some of you have tried/seen this before or have an idea what it can be. I left the DVD drive out, and it has not happened again...yet (it's been 5 hours only).
    Ideas?
    Thanks in advance!
    Martin.

    Hi Nordal,
I know this is an old thread, but since I too am now experiencing inability to startup by T60 and seems to be getting worse in the last months, I was wondering what additional things you may have learned in the last 2 years since facing this issue.  My system will typically be in standby or hibernate and when I open lid to start it up again, Power and Bat light go out and cannot start it.  No beep codes, nothing.  Previously, recovery was to pull battery (which is now new Lenovo as of last month and working great), hit power button a few times and then hold it in, put battery back in and AC adapter, then it would start up.  In last few days, this no longer works.  I have to go through similar step, but now I have to startup only with battery, once in Desktop, I can plug in adapter and no issue until next time.  I have three 90W AC adapter all putting out correct 19.5-20 VDC.  Have rulled out an adapter issue, I believe.  Concerned about something on motherboard being flaky, but cannot pinpoint issue.  A few days ago when this happened, I had to pull CMOS battery, wait a few min., then put everything back together and was able to boot.
Have never pulled anything more than RAM, CMOS battery, main battery, and AC adapter.  May have to try DVD drive next time.
    Thanks,
    Kaz
It's probably best to start a new thread instead of reopening one thats 2-3years old, but from what your describing it sounds like your slowly ruling out everything except the system board, nothing you don't know already.
I don't normally deal with T60's, my main focus is T61, but I do have a source for the boards if you were to need one, as well as having a source to get the older boards reflowed. Some of the older models had problems with solder connections cracking when the board would flex, which can be repaired on an infrared reballing machine. My friend Dominic (realblackstuff from thinkpadforums.com) operates a website where boards are collected and sent off to be reflowed in wholesale lots. It's quite reasonably priced, as are the T60 boards pulled form grade "A" corporate laptops, but lets hope you can find a lesser component that is causing the problems.

My dvd player will not let me change regions, it says i have one more chance to change it, then it just quits when i do, now its stuck on region 1. Any thoughts how i can solve this problem or get round it in some way?

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.

  • HP Pavilion a1123c - will not power on after being unplugged while in use

    So bit of panic:
I've been using the above computer since 2007 with the expected wear and tear, slowing down. Today it was put through its paces and while on a multimedia-hwavy web page it became unresponsive to the point I could not even bring up the task manager to restart. Being a computer noob, I unplugged the computer to force a reset. It now will not power on with or without the power source. While plugged in the LED flashes rapidly. When unplugged the LED flashes but more slowly. I have tried flipping the voltage switch on the back but still my computer won't turn on.
I have all of my digital photos on this computer and am terrified of losing everything. What should I do? Is there hope of the data being salvageable? Thank you all so much.

Assuming erico 's advice fixes the situation, please make backups of the important data -  such as photos or other important documents to a DVD or flash drive or external hard drive.
If the power supply troubleshooting guide does not fix the problem, there are ways to still make the backups of that important data, on a working computer from the failed computer.  Just come back with the report on whether the advice from erico worked or not.

  • Thinkpad will not power up

    Hi,
    I have a Thinkpad A31 2652-C4U
The unit will not power up.  The light that indicates the unit is receiving charge doesn't even come on, and hasn't ever since I came into possesion of the unit.
I know the power supply works, I tested it with a volt meter, and besides, it's also randomly compatible with an old Compaq Presario I have lying around, and it powers that unit up quite well.  I've also checked the power input on the unit itself, and it's not loose.  Doesn't matter if I leave the battery in the unit or take it out either
Since I received the unit for free, I'm willing to invest a small amount of money into it, just to see if I can fix it.  But none of my typical diagnostics are applocable here, because the unit doesn't power up.  So I was wondering if there were any suggestions as to what I might try next.
Oh.  The unit has no hard drive either.  The hard drive caddy is gone too.  The unit does have a stick of ram, but I don't have any other computers lying around that are compatible, so I can't test it.  Either way, those issues should effect the lack of power getting to the unit.
Anyway, any help you guys can offer me is greatly appreciated.  I'd like to see what I can do with this thing.
    Thanks.

    OK...let's try this:
A30 board could be fitted into an A31 shell with some playing around, but these support only P3M CPUs while A31 are equipped with P4M CPUs. RAM is PC133 vs. DDR 266 on A31/p.
Everything else...keyboards, LCDs, batteries are interchangeable.
The board itself must be from an A31 and not A30/p or A31p if you're looking to get the machine running the way it's supposed to be...
Everything you need to know in the respect of part numbers, removal procedures etc. can be found in the HMM:

  • MacBook will not power or charge! HELP ME!

My MacBook was working great last night. I was watching a DVD on it and the battery started to go low. I closed it up and layed it down and went to bed. I did shut off DVD before closing it up. Safri might have still been on I am not sure. Either way I wake up to a dead battery, so as always I plugged in the AC to watch my movie, but the light on the AC will not even light up. I even took the battery out and still it will not Power on. I cleaned and put battery back in and still NOTHING. No chargeing up, no powering on. My computer just will not power on at all. I had this happen to an iBook, but it finally came on after taking the battery out ten or more times and just kept pushing the power button. But, I've tried all morning and I can't get anything to happen with this MacBook. Am I suppose to hold down a key or is there a way to reset the computer? It was working great! Not one problem EVER. Not even a shut down or locking up....nothing. Not. One. Problem. Please HELP ME!? I'm guessing the battery went completely dead and forced the computer to shut off....but why will it not cut back on? I'll give you the BIGGEST (((HUG))) if you can help me! -Aimee ;o)

Yea. They call themselves a "genius," but that they are NOT! Some are so clueless and only want you to buy a new computer. Theres gotta be a better way. Sometimes I think APPLE put a little device in their computers and after five years it blows up and kills the computer so your only option is to buy a new one. I"M NOT GIVING UP!!! LOL!

  • My Powerbook will not power up, but I can hear the fan running...

Please help!! My Powerbook will not power up, but I can hear the fan running when I press the power button to attempt to power it up. I just received a new power adapter because it wasn't working properly and it was doing this before and then it worked for a week and now it will not power up at all. It just starts the fan but nothing else turns on. When I plug the adapter, with the battery still connected, it will look as if it is charging but then the light on the plug turns from green to orange then off and doesn't power up at all. If I take the battery out and plug in the adapter, the light stays on but it does not power up except for the fan noise. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also followed the two articles listed online in regards to resetting the power setting and the command + alt + P + R as well. Nothing works. Thanks in advance.....

Same here. If I start up with the power adapter attached, it starts up fine. If I try to start up from battery only, the fan comes on, the sleep light comes on but nothing else happens. I tried letting it sit that way for about 15 minutes and nothing changed. I tried attaching the power cord while in this mode and nothing changed. I tried the PMU reset a couple of times but nothing helps.
This computer is just over 1 year old and I have not had any problems with the power cord (3rd party), the battery, or any problem like this before. It started after a proper shutdown last night and attempt to start without the power cord this afternoon.
Any answers to this yet? I think I'll call on this and report any success to this discussion.

  • Need Help HP DM3 (DM3-1130us) Laptop will not power on. No power at all except for light on a/c jack

    Hello, I need some help.
I have a HP DM3-1130us Laptop that will not power on at all.
the only thing that happens when I plug it in is the power jack lights up.
When the power button is used absolutely nothing happens.
No power, no fans, no leds, no on/off cycles, no beebs, absolutely nothing
just the light by the power jack that says the cord is plugged in.
The laptop has Windows 7, 320gb hdd, 4gb ram.
I have tried new power adapter and still nothing.
I have taken the battery out and tried and nothing.
I've tried the option where you take the battery out and hold the power and nothing.
I have tried with different hard drive and no hard drive and nothing.
I have tried reseating the ram and tried new ram modules still nothing.
So I am kind of stumped on what to do, the laptop will just not turn on.
Its not under warranty anymore so cant send it off.
It has not been exposed to any elements(extreme heat or water).
and its never been dropped or anthing.
Im kind of wondering maybe the power button board its self is bad?
If feels fine, its not loose or anything but could it
have just stopped working? for those who are not familiar with this model.
the power button is on the side and is a kind of drag and release button.
Its also on the same board with the Wifi button and 2 Usb ports.
But Im wondering before I buy a new one if this is what it could be.
Or could the motherboard its self be bad?
But even if the motherboard is bad would it still power up
    just not post?
Also does anyone know of any other way to try to power this laptop up
without using the slide button. I mean kind of like off a Dv6000 you can power the laptop on by using the Quicklaunch buttons on top but this laptop does not have those.
If anyone can provide any information I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

    Hey Tyler,
Unfortunately it is difficult to troubleshoot this type of issue. The majority of the time when the computer wont power on with the same symptoms you described, the power supply board is faulty. Most of the time if the motherboard is bad it should at least turn on or so some signs of life. Like I said, this is most of the time. Sometimes it could do exactly what your experiencing. I would suspect the power supply board has failed since you are not receiving any sort of lights, sounds, etc.
You could check the motherboard for swollen capacitors or loose solder joints but sometimes you wont be able to find anything.
I hope this helps answers your questions,
    Sean

  • My iPhone 5s will not power on and I need my serial number for support.

I am attempting to get help through Apple Support- Chat, but I need my serial number.  It is not showing up in iTunes under the device preferences.  Any other ways to retrieve the serial number through iCloud?
If anyone has any idea of what is going on with my phone, I would love some assistance.  I live 45 minutes from the nearest Apple Store.  Here's the situation:
About 2 weeks ago, my phone started shutting itself off and restarting randomly.
About a week and a half ago, I would randomly get a blue screen and then the phone would restart multiple times.
About a week ago I turned off Touch ID in an effort to resolve the issue, after reading some fixes from this community.  That seemed to help.  I do have the animation turned off, so I had read that there may be an issue between the Touch ID and animation reduction.  If that had not helped, I was going to turn the animation back on.
Last night my phone seemed fine.  I did hear it restart in the middle of the night once, but this morning it will not power on at all.
I tried connecting it to my computer through iTunes, but iTunes does not see it and I cannot access the device information from it.
My phone is less than a month old, and for the first two weeks it worked great.  I am taking it into the AT&T Store today where it was purchased, but I don't really have high hopes for a resolution.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Sorry AT&T store won't be much help.
I suggest you make an appointment with the Genius bar and then go to the Apple store.

  • Macbook Pro will not power on without battery installed

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Pro A1226 that fails to power on without a battery installed.
i.e. will not run off AC power on its own. I have tried 2 other power adapters, no change. All 3 adapters are outputting the correct voltage without fluctuations.
But, if I am in OSX with a battery plugged in, shutdown the laptop, remove the battery while AC is still plugged in, it will power back on without any issues. But as soon as I remove the battery, it will not power back on using just AC.
Is this an I/O board issue, or a mainboard?
I have power drained the unit and reset the parameter ram.
    Thanks

Any update on this? This is the same thing that's going on with my laptop right now. I was at the Genius Bar and they said they can send it in for repair. Takes 7-9 days and costs a minimum of $310. At the time I was there, my computer wouldn't start up at all, because the battery had drained to less than 20%. It didn't even start with just the power cord (no battery in). The "genius" finally got it to work by doing a PRAM and SMC reset. Got home and was able to recharge my battery to 100%. Used my computer for 2 days before I dared to take it off the power supply. Lo and behold, as soon as I take it off the power cord, then re-connect it, it shows "Not Charging". I tried to do SMC again, but no luck. Keeps saying "not charging". Even tried with a brand new battery. Do I have to get the I/O board thingy replaced?
