LCD TV recommendation?
Hi,
Our language lab will be replacing all computers and displays this summer. We'll be installing Mac Pros and are now looking at possible 19 or 20 inch LCD TV displays. Currently we're testing 19" Samsung and Westinghouse LCD TV displays.
One issue with the TV displays is the rather fuzzy resolution when using as a computer display. I'll try SwitchRez to customize resolution settings but am not so sure this will help that much in the end. We really don't want to use regular LCD displays, so I would love to hear recommendations or suggestions from forum members as to what LCD TV displays may be best for our needs.
Thanks in advance.
with 1080p screens that's no longer an issue , try viewing a decent full hd lcd with an hdmi input and you'll see
plus the convenience of having things like hdmi , rgb scarts / s-video and a freeview tuner outweigh any supposed superiority of a dedicated lcd monitor , connectivity really is SO important
computer lcd screens like apple's offerings while stunning are basically dead end in comparison , ie ; not terribly versatile

As prices fall, I'd like to buy an LCD monitor and reclaim some desk space occupied by my Sony Trintron 19" CRT monitor these many years.
What are some of the better brands/models for editing (FCE)? I think a 20" or more would give me greater screen real estate, and what about brands? Some online research indicate the Dells are considered pretty good, and so are the Samsungs.
What are some brand and model preferences from this forum, and why?
Thanks,
and Happy New Year to all
KeithBeen using a pair of Dell 2408's for the last 6 months.
Stable color. I'm using a Spyder2Pro for calibration and they both show exactly the same colors.
Lots of connection possibilities. Work in portrait mode if you'd like.
Work with the MXO as a calibrated HD monitor.
Major complaint is I can't drive the monitors with DVI and have a HDMI picture within a picture. It has to be component. Otherwise - no complaints.

DVI LCD really necessary?
I'm thinking about buying an inexpensive but good quality 17 inch LCD. Since my PB comes with a DVI output, I'm wondering whether I should get a DVI monitor instead of VGA. What would really be the difference I see?
Also, if you have a 17 inch LCD to recommend, let me know.
thanks,
ericI have a Samsung 172x 17" LCD (1280x1024 native resolution), which has both DVI and VGA inputs.
Using DVI with it is definitely sharper, and I think the saturation is better, but that's not to say that VGA is bad at all. One other (small) advantage of DVI is that you don't have to bother with geometry settings - that's handled automatically.
Most VGA only displays aren't going to have as good specifications (response time, brightness, viewing angle, etc) as some DVI ones, so make sure you take those specs into account too. (There are of course lower end DVI and higher end VGA LCD monitors available).
The 172x is an excellent monitor that works great with (and looks great beside) my PowerBook. It has a 12ms response time (good for DVDs) and a very thin bezel around the screen - which in a dual monitor setup is quite important. The branding and button placement are also very unobtrusive, which I consider important for something I'm sitting in front of all day.
I have it set up so my PowerBook used DVI while my old G3 Power Mac is connected to it by VGA. By pressing a button on the Samsung, I can instantly switch between the two displays. If you'll ever consider owning two computers (two Macs or a Mac and a PC), it's a handy feature to have. -

Sharing a DVI LCD monitor between a MDD & AGP Macs, recommendations?
Hi all,
In the not so near future, I'm looking to share a large(42) LCD monitor with DVI ports between my MDD and AGP Macs. My AGP Mac has the Geforce nividia 4600,64MB video card and the MDD has the ATI 9000PRO, 64mb video card via a dvi switch box.
Any recommendations on a LCD monitor that will give excellent quality? Also, will I see a big difference if I were to upgrade my video cards to 128MB or higher?
thanks, web dudeI have the slightly larger VX2235wm which is 22 inches, and the same video card as you on my MDD. I am satisfied with its performance.
The monitor has separate VGA and DVI input ports. The max widescreen res on my MDD is 1680x1050. I usually run at 1440x900 because my eyes aren't what they once were.
I've gotten higher resolution on the same monitor by connecting it to my MacBook Pro via DVI. Can't remember what the numbers are exactly but I know it's larger than the 1680x1050 on my MDD. The notebook has a newer graphics chipset and 128MB VRAM, so that's not a surprise.
As an aside, I played with both the VGA and the DVI sides of the monitor. I found I have more options for smaller resolutions if I use the DVI-to-VGA adaptor that came with the MDD and connect to the VGA side of the Viewsonic.. I keep the DVI cable attached but tangling over the back of the desk so I don't have to rummage so much when I need to connect the MacBook Pro. It works fine on the DVI cable. As long as I turn off the MDD before connecting the cable, leaving both lines running to the monitor has caused no problems. -
Mac Mini i5 Radeon 6630M - Recommend LCD 22" Display?
Hello, I have space to go up to a 22" widescreen LCD display. Can someone recommend a 22" or so LCD display for this gen mac mini with Radeon 6630M video adapter that is good for font rendering? (my current LCD doesn't seem compatible for good font rendering).
ViewSonic, Sony, and NEC all make great displays. As for font rendering a lot has to do with your:
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Turn off font smoothing for font sizes, and the fonts picked by your various applications. The Color calibration in the Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays can also help. Always get a minimum 1080p display. 1080i resolutions aren't good for sharpness. -
Cleaning Dell LCD Monitor - What are current recommendations?
What are the current recommendations for cleaning a Dell LCD Monitor?
I have always used 50% distilled water and 50% isopropyl alcohol and gently cleaned with a microfibre cloth.
We have many different Dell LCD monitors in my workplace.

Recommend anti-glare LCD monitor for MBP 13
Hello, I need a decent quality antiglare type monitor to be the external monitor for graphics work with my MacBook Pro 13 inch unibody. I just tried an HP ZR24w but was not able to get it working. The monitor would light up for one second and my desktop showed, then it would immediately go dark. Apple support could not help, HP support kept me on hold for 45 min. and then dropped my call.
Unfortunately Apple no longer makes antiglare monitors for its graphics professional community. If they did I would buy an Apple monitor. I am currently using an old Apple Cinema Display but it has a bad case of creeping screen defects and looks terrible.
Is anyone out there sucessfully using an external monitor with MBP that has an antiglare screen, does 1920 x 1200 res and has an IPS LCD?
The usual suspects that people recommend for graphics work in the mid-range are Dell ultra-sharp and HP LP2475w. Since I do less graphics work than I used to I thought the ZR24w would be a good affordable option, however since I could not get it to work I am concerned that none of these other monitors will be compatible either. Buying and returning vis mail order is expensive... would really appreciate hearing what other people are using.
Please let me know what connector you are using. I tried the ZR24w with both DVI and displayPort but neither of these options work for me. Apple tech support was stumped and blamed it on HP.
Any thoughts?
TIA!There should be a anti-glare option on ALL Mac's, however the 13" is certainly the next prime candidate for one given that they rolled out anti-glare for the 17" first, then the 15" next.

Recommended LCD monitor for Mac Minin 1.42
I'm trying to find a LCD monitor in the 20"-22" range for my Mac Mini 1.42 that is known to work out of the box using DVI without having to tweak things (i.e. SwitchResX). I have already purchased and returned a HP w2007. My next choice was a ViewSonic VX2035wm but reading this forum it is also known to have timing problems. I'd rather not spend the $$$ for an Apple monitor (not even sure if they work). Would like to keep the cost below $300.
ThanksYou might find the page at http://www.freewebs.com/themagius/macintoshmini.htm helpful since it was compiled for the original 1.25 and 1.42 PPC minis. It does, however, list only DVI.
VGA displays were less troublesome, since they almost all work with the mini, though some were apt to display dim or greyish output. -
19" LCD - recommendations?
Ok, so the title kinda says it all... I've been looking at the SyncMaster 930B - it's about $400 for a 19" 1280x1024 with a 8ms response time (wow!)...
Anyone have experiences with anything similar (I won't be purchasing until aroun the 15th/16th anyway)?
edit: the Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+ is also a possibility - similar specs and this one actually comes with a DVI cable (SyncMaster does not)lanrat wrote:Phracture: don't read specs. Go to some large store and compare the quality of a few LCDs by running same thing on all of them standing one by one. You can be really surprised how different can they be when you can compare the picture. IMO Samsung is better than Dell but this depends on your preferences. Most Dell LCDs I was comparing had a bit wormer colors than Samsung LCDs but the Samsung LCD colors were very close to CRT which can be very important for example for a web designer. On the other hand I know some people preferring Dell just becasue they liked those warmer colors :-)
hmm ... cant you calibrate this monitor to show "real" colours? i'm not an expert and only looking in a laptop screen i don0t know how it works on real displays but it would make not much sense, if you would not be able to be able to calibrate the display to show the colours how they should be (e.g. for print-media, this monitors would not come very usefull)
the dell 2001FP looks really interesting but it is a way too much money for a monitor: 1'074.92 CHF (1,2CHF~=1us$)
http://dellware.euro.dell.com/dellstore … _200-23361
on the other hand, if this monitor has pivot, it is a really cool monitor. -
Recommend lcd-led for color rendition
my primary criterion is color rendition - accurate and "enhanced" -- i am not a professional -- i don't know the vernacular yet -- but i do have strong color perception, and i will be investing a great deal of time and effort.
so, please either recommend specific models, or offer criteria.Dell Wide Gamut for affordability, NEC, Eizo, etc for tech specs, but procey.

Which LCD screen for design would you recommend?
Hello,
Now that my 22" CRT screen is slowly dying on me, it is time to find a replacement within my max 800 EURO budget. CRT are unfortunately barely available anymore and those few come at premium prices. So a LCD screen...
As a professional multimedia designer I value IQ and decent color reproduction/depth, and I would use the screen for (web)design, photo editing, illustration, some animation and occasionaly design for print, apart from playing sometimes dvds, webbrowsing and very rarely a game.
b Question #1:
I haven't decided yet if I should go for one 24" screen or go for a dual screen setup of 2x 21/22" (or perhaps 22" and 19", since the secondary screen is mainly used for Adobe panels).
What is your experience and opinion about this?
b Question #2:
Now I know that for the best color reproduction I should opt for a 24" S-IPS panel. And would I live in the USA I would have likely chosen the much praised NEC2490WUX.
However, I live in Europe and there this NEC 2490 is not for sale.
Even worse, at 24" size there are almost no S-IPS screens at all on the market and certainly not within my 800 EURO budget.
"So why not focuss on finding a good 22" S-IPS screen", I hear you cry... well, they don't exist either. Most 22" panels are TN, an occasional one VA. I could find some 20" S-IPS screens, but at huge cost (around 600 EUR). So that doesn't seem to be a good choice.
Alas, I have to focuss on finding the best M/PVA screen 'for (web)design, photo editing, illustration, some animation and occasionaly design for print, apart from playing sometimes dvds, webbrowsing and very rarely a game', and preferably one at a good price/quality ratio. And therefore dealing with issues as gamma and colorshift which are apparantly inherent to this type of panel.
So my question to you is... do you have experience with a M/PVA LCD screen that you would advice me (or not ofcourse). I have been shortlisting the Eizo S2431 (based on a PRAD.de review), the NEC2470WVN... but both are fairly expensive screens (though within budget) and I cannot really judge if either one of these VA screens is worth the extra money and useful for my needs.
Thank you for reading and any input you may have!Eizo displays are well regarded for color accuracy. I am not familiar with their entire range, but you should check that the response time of the LCD on any panel you buy is fast enough to show video and animation without ghosting. That was not an issue with CRT monitors, but LCD technology is still catching up on response time with some of the panels available.

Hello Final Cut Studio 2 Experts,
I'm considering purchasing Final Cut Studi 2, and to make sure that I'll benefit from the full range of specific application (FCS/motion/color...) and I'd like to ask few questions (5 main points) regarding requirements and recommendations. So, please be prepared for much reading as I am not an expert on the matter. I like to know if my computer accepts any further hardware parts highly recommended and if I can purchase and install them myself. And yes, you should also know that I intend to use a Panasonic multi-format (HD/SD) camera for capturing and exporting videos.
N.B. Please note that the full list of my Hardware contents appear at the bottom of this text.
THANKS IN ADVANCE for your expert advise!
So, here we go:
Application-Specific Requirements
Final Cut Studio
Capturing HD resolution video using the ProRes 422 format requires a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor or a G5 Quad computer and a qualified third-party capture card.
1) Do I need an Intel Xeon processor? If yes, can I purchase and install the component by myself (like RAM)?
Motion
The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iMac with Intel Core Duo, Power Mac G5, or iMac G5; 1.25GHz or faster PowerBook G4; or 1.25GHz or faster flat-panel iMac:
ATI Radeon 9800, 9700 Pro, 9600 XT, or 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, 6600 LE, FX Go5200, or FX 5200 Ultra
For 16- and 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM
2) Do I need one of the ATI Radeon 9800, 9700... or ATI Mobility Radeon? Why does my Hardware contents say ATI Radeon 9600, and not ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, is there a difference?
Color
The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, 17-inch MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac with Intel Core Duo, or 2.5GHz or faster Power Mac G5 Quad:
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
ATI Radeon X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, or Quadro FX 4500
A display with 1680-by-1050 resolution or higher
A three-button mouse for full functionality
3) Do I need and ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 or ATI Radeon X1600?
DVD Studio Pro
For playback of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored HD DVDs: a Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G5 or Intel Core Duo processor
For writing finished projects to disc: an Apple SuperDrive or other DVD recorder
For writing finished projects to a double-layer disc: a double-layer-compatible recorder and double-layer media
For transporting HD projects to a replicator: an external drive or Internet transfer of the project’s disk image
For transporting SD projects that contain copy-protection or dual-layer features to a replicator: a DLT drive, external drive, or Internet transfer of the project’s disk image
4) Do I have an Intel Core Duo processor? Do I need an Apple SuperDrive?
What is a "replicator"?
Application-Specific Recommendations
Motion
One of the following graphics cards is highly recommended:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT, X850 XT, X800 XT, or X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL, or Quadro FX 4500
For 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with 256MB of VRAM or more
Color
The following graphics card is highly recommended:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
Dual displays with 1920-by-1200 or higher resolution
5) Do I have one of the highly recommended cards ATI Radeon X1900 XT etc...? How do I get it and can I install it myself?

Satellite U400-10J - power is on but NO LCD dsiplay
Good day.
I have a new Toshiba Satellite U400-10J.
I did not turn it off after i use it and then when i get back it was hanged up so i decided to turn it off by pressing the power button in few seconds.
The next day when i decided to use my laptop again something occured that i don't understand.
My problem is;
When i turned ON the power button, the laptop runs but there was no display, i checked the fan and it runs for a while then stops after a few seconds. All other button has lights and the CD drive is running too.
What wonders me is that the hard disk led is not blinking or there's no light in it and why there was no LCD display?
Please, anyone can help me on this matter. I would really appreciate if you can give me your answer now.
Thank you very much.To be honest I dont understand why this happened. Im owner of Satellite U400-10N and something like that never happened to me.
However, I read about some useful workarounds which could help you.
First of all remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor.
Then you have to wait Im not quite sure how long but I would recommend waiting for about 30-60min.
Then connect both devices and try to power up the notebook.
Check if this helps.
Bye and good luck
