LDAP and NFS mounts/setup OSX Lion iMac with Mac Mini Lion Server

Hello all,
I have a local account on my iMac (Lion), and I also have a Mac Mini (Lion Server) and I want to use LDAP and NFS to mount the /Users directory, but am having trouble.
We have a comination of Linux (Ubuntu), Windows 7 and Macs on this network using LDAP and NFS, except the windows computers.
We have created users in workgroup management on the server, and we have it working on a few Macs already, but I wasnt there to see that process.
Is there a way to keep my local account separate, and still have NFS access to /Users on the server and LDAP for authentification?
Thanks,
-Matt

It would make a great server. Bonus over Apple TV for example is that you have access via both wired ethernet and wireless. Plus if you load tools from XBMC, Firecore and others you have a significant media server. Cost is right too.
Many people are doing this - google mac mini media server or other for more info.
Total downside to any windows based system - dealing with constant anti-virus, major security hassels, lack of true media integration and PITA to update, etc.
You should be aware that Lion Server is not ready for prime time - it stil has significant issues if you are migrating from SNL 10.6.8. If you buy an apple fresh Lion Server mac mini you should have no problems.
You'll probably be pleased.

Can I use my iMac (PowerPC G5 2.1 GHz, Build 9L31a, Serial # W855104UTAR, VERSION 10.5.8) as a monitor with new Mac mini.
If yes, how to do it?

    YES!
You either must use a monitor to initially set up the Mac Mini, or use Target Mode to boot into its hard disk, and create these settings, but:
You turn on Screen Sharing in the Sharing panel in System Preferences in the Mac Mini.  In my case I also give my Mac Mini a fixed IP with DHCP with Manual Address in the Network panel.
Then you boot your iMac and in the Finder in the GO menu to Connect to Server... and enter: "vnc://192.168.0.148" but replace 192.168.0.148 with your Manual Address for your Mac Mini.   You log in with your name and password for the Mac Mini and your Mac Mini will now appear in its own window.
Go to Full Screen and now you can running your Mac Mini with your iMac's keyboard, mouse and monitor.
I have been using my mid-2011 Mac Mini in this fashion since I purchased it.
As a backup, I have an HDMI cable connected from my Mac Mini to my HDTV to allow for "monitor viewing" when and if needed.
I have an older Mac Mini running Snow Leopard as part of my home entertainment center, and with its own IP, I also control it in this fashion without a monitor (although I can "view" it on my HDTV through its component video input, when needed).
This is known as a "headless" mac mini.
In my case, instead of an iMac, I use my MacBook Pro.

  • Anti virus for iMac with OS X Lion

    Hi;
I have an iMac with OS X Lion,I'd like to know if Apple really offer a free anti virus for me, or if not so , where can I find a proper anti virus for my iMac?
    Best regards;
    Lama Yahya

    VIRUSES
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download for Tiger and Leopard from:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
The new version for Snow Leopard and Lion is available here:
    http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=v2beta
Note: ClamAV adds a new user group to your Mac. That makes it a little more difficult to remove than some apps. You’ll find an uninstaller link in ClamXav’s FAQ page online.
If you are already using ClamXav: please ensure that you have installed all recent  Apple Security Updates  and that your version of ClamXav is the latest available.
Do not install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac as it can seriously damage your operating system. Norton Anti-Virus is not compatible with Apple OS X.
FAKE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE and associated MALWARE
Do not be tricked by 'scareware' that tempts computer users to download fake anti-virus software that may itself be malware.
Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google. Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.
Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.
Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.
Beware of PDF files from unknown sources. A security firm announced that by its counting, malicious Reader documents made up 80% of all exploits at the end of 2009.:

TROJANS and RE-DIRECTION TO FAKE WEBSITES
The appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's  (that's you!)  DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works (by falsely suggesting extra codecs are required for Quicktime) here:
    http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojan_osx_dnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X.  It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
First update the MacScan malware definitions before scanning. You can also contact their support team for any additional support - [email protected]
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper was published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
    http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?main_page=document_ general_info&cPath=11&products_id=174
Also, beware of MacSweeper and MacDefender (also goes under the name of MacProtector, MacGaurd, MacSecurity or MacShield) :
These are malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer in an attempt to obtain payment.
Mackeeper is equally worthless and should also be avoided. Again, the developer seeks to obtain payment for an application that does nothing that free utilities do not also offer, and in many cases it will also mess up your system.
You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
    http://www.securemac.com/
    HOW TO AVOID RE-DIRECTION
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of added security as well as speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOUR MAC HAS BECOME 'INFECTED'
If you think you may have acquired a Trojan, and you know its name, you can also locate it via the Terminal:
    http://theappleblog.com/2009/04/24/mac-botnet-how-to-ensure-you-are-not-part-of- the-problem/
Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
    1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially p'orn'ography sites.
    2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program.
    3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through this AV application.
    4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
    5.  Peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents (such as the now defunct LimeWire) supplying pirated software, movies etc are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications. Similar risks apply to using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and similar sites which are prone to malicious hacking:  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8420233.stm
    6. Resist the temptation to download pirated software. They can contain Botnet Trojans.  SecureMac offer a simple and free tool for the removal of the iBotNet Trojan available here:

NOTE: Apple's Snow Leopard and Lion operating systems silently update the malware protection built into Mac OS X to protect against a backdoor Trojan horse that can allow hackers to gain remote control over your treasured iMac or MacBook: Macs running Snow Leopard or Lion now check for new malware definitions daily, allowing Apple to quickly deploy protection from threats before they have a chance to spread.
Few malicious titles actually exist for Mac OS X, and those that do rely almost entirely upon duping users to install software that pretends to be legitimate.
    http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2010/06/18/apple-secretly-updates
However, if you are running Lion Server:
Apple's new server operating system -- OS X Lion -- is so inherently insecure that Stamos recommends keeping it off the network altogether and using Macs only as standalone machines connected to IP or Windows networks, not those designed for Macs.
The Mac Server's networking protocols -- especially DHX User Authentication -- are designed for ease of use, not security. It is trivial, Stamos said, for hackers to set up a Mac user to download a file that will overflow the buffer protecting the heap segment of the server's memory, allowing the file's malicious payload to run uncontrolled in the server's memory and give itself whatever access rights it wants.

    To reinstall a specific driver:
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example, if your Mac’s built-in camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the camera’s driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the CD, DVD, or external disk with the Windows support software.
1  Insert the CD or DVD or connect the external disk with the Windows support software.
2  Quit AutoRun if it opens.
3  Using Windows Explorer, locate the driver that you want to reinstall.
4  Open the driver to start the installation.
Your drive (Network's drive) is in this location:
WindowsSupoport -> Drivers -> Broadcon -> BroadconNetworkAdapterWin7_32 (depends of version of your windows!)
In my case i need to install manually the drives for Net and sound!

    I hope I´ve helped!
You have not, the OP has Lion so no disk, and you can't re-install until after you install, which hasn't happened yet.
To the OP, use BCA to download the Windows Support Software, follow the instructions to install it in Windows.

Is it possible to upgrade the iMac G3 (1998) to an iMac with Mac OS X Lion or Mountain Lion ?

The 1998 iMac predates the introduction of Firewire.  So yes, it is limited to 10.3.9.  Sonnett did offer an upgrade to the iMac to allow it to have Firewire.  I don't know if this enabled 10.4 or not.   XPostfacto also offered unsupported 10.4 for older iMacs.   But Spotlight and Dashboard are very slow if you can't upgrade to a minimum of 256 MB of RAM, and preferably 512MB of RAM.   Look at http://www.everymac.com/ to find out your Max.

I checked out your solution, but.... sorry it doesn't works.
So I cut off the bluetooth connection of the magic trackpad from my iMac and pair it again, but the problem is the same.
May be it's bigger bug with LION, so I need an update for this function.
But thank you very much for your help.

  • New iMac with OS x Lion.  Printing envelopes w/ Address book makes a second blank envelope. Drivers up to date. Have to mark print only first page. Had no problem with Snow Leopard. How to correct.

I recently purchased a new iMac with OS x Lion. Previously was using a four year old iMac with snow Leopard. I have three HP printers with up to date drivers for Lion.  When I try to print an envelope from Address Book I have two problems:
    1) I have to change the orientation to vertical to get the proper margins, which I never had to do before and
    2) It prints a second blank envelope unless I tell it to only print the first page.
Neither of the problems occurred with my previous iMac/w Snow Leopard  and it appears to be a Lion/HP software incompatibility. I have worked with a Apple supervisor (Case # 316225300) for hours and finally reinstalled the operating system to no avail.
I do I correct both problems???

Contact HP and ask them to write better drivers for Lion. Find a printer that is more compatible with Lion. I've not printed envelopes with Lion before, though I've had no difficulty with either Epson Artisan 810 or Canon MX700 for regular printing.  Sometimes open source drivers also work better than manufacturer drivers.  See this FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
While many open source drivers won't give you duplex or printer diagnostics, at least they may work better for other features.
Lastly, I've often found for a more consistent print, saving as PDF, and then printing from Preview can sometimes be the best work around.  Someone in the Mac OS X Technologies forum might be able to help you write an automator script to do this in one fell swoop, if you find it works better for your needs.

Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it shows up in the new Mac's computer folder. It seems that Mac-mini Tiger is as it should be and the firewire cable is OK.  Something about the Migration Assistant is being missed, but I have no idea what it is.
    Help

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

I experience the same. IMac 27', bought just 6 weeks ago (2011), then updated from SL to Lion and now the fun begins. Crashes, crashes, crashes.... Repaired volume yesterday, repaired access rights, now even in safe mode it crashes after 2-3 mins and I am in endless loop of boot-crash-boot-..., need to pull the plug.
Brand new hardware, literally unused ( some photos, nothing more), 1.700 €.... Got an iPhone, an iPad as well but I can't tell you how disappointed I am now! As someone said before, I bought an iMac to use it and not read kernel logs, repair volumes, search for help for days....

This has nothing to do with your pictures. As long as LR works, nothing happens. The CC app merely has lost an entry in the installer database. Would a reinstall fix it? Sure. Is it necessary? Not really (until the next version or update). So unless you have too much time to spend or something isn't working, I'm sure you can find more interesting things to do with your tiem. Hello, try kguy's solution here...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2332457?start=0&tstart=0
First, Go to System Preferences, keyboard, and click on the Keyboard tab
Make sure that the checkbox by "Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys" is NOT checked.
Next, click on the Show All button, and select Bluetooth. You should see your Apple Wireless Keyboard listed on the left side of the screen.
Click once to select it, and then click the gear icon at the bottom of the box, and choose Disconnect.
Power off the keyboard by holding down the power button on the keyboard for a few seconds until it show "keyboard Off on your imac screen, then turn it back on again.
The device should appear once again in your bluetooth list.
Try out the volume control buttons now, and see if that cleared things up
