Leader Dots

I created a paragraph style for leader dots to align $ amounts. It's not a TOC, but part of a form. It said to right justify, but the leader dots are not going all the way across the text box. They stop in the middle. How can I fix this? Thanks!

Hard to say.
Right indent on the paragraph style? Frame margin on the right? Didn't set a tab all the way to the frame's edge?

  • Tab with Leader Dots to Text that Covers Multiple Lines

    I have a numbered list with copious amounts of information in it that is connected by leader dots.  It is very mush like a table of contents or a restaurant menu (e.g. "name of the dish" ........ $ price).  My case, however, has one simple nuance that breaks everything and is not explained by any of the conversations or documentation that I've been able to find via searches of this forum and the rest of the web.
    What if the leader dots lead to something that does not fit on one line?
    Here's an example:
    Basically, what I need is for everything between the Tab (which generates the leader dots) and the End of Paragraph (when I push Enter) to stay to the right of the dots.  Don't let my little example fool you, the lists I'm dealing with are very long and subject to change order drastically.  Surely, there must be a way to do this but I am completely lost.  I've considered just winging it and putting things in their own text boxes and forcing alignment manually through various methods.  But, again there is so much content and the order of it will almost surely change, so I want to keep everything in an editable, easy to work with format.
    Thanks so much to whomever might have insight or advice on what to do!

    Hi Mike,
    Why not a simply regex!    Nothing else to do … or to loose!

    Can anyone help???

    Apply a Character style to the tab character—don't try and do it from the Paragraph style. You can stay with a period as the leader and manipulate the size and spread of the dots via the character style. So here I've applied the Leader character style to the tab or the right indent tab and changed the point size and tracking of the style to make a leader with smaller dots and more spacing:

  • TOC bullet before leader dots (with pix)

    Can someone help me make this bullet go away? For some reason, my TOC style is inserting a bullet in front of my leader dots. There is no bullet in the heading style that it is pulling from - and there is only a paragraph break after the header in the document. And yes, the bullets are printing. Thanks!

    No need - you just helped me figure it out! I prepared a smaller version of the file to send to you saw that it didn't have the problem. So I compared the good version with the bad and noticed a difference in the TOC dialog box (between Entry and Number). The bad field showed "^8^t"  I changed it to "^t" and the bullets went away. Thanks!

  • FM10 Can't generate the TOC with leading dots

    Hi everybody,
    I have read some useful threads here about this problem but I still can't seem to be able to resolve this leading dots issue for my TOC.
    I have already ensured that the reference page for all of my frame files in my Book have the same Reference page TOC entry. When I generate my TOC the leading dots are missing!
    I then open the Reference page for the TOC file as well and paste in the same TOC entries from my other frame files, and then update the book to regenerate the TOC.
    This also does not solve the problem.
    Any help resolving this issue would be really appreciated!
    Here are screen shots of my Reference page for my TOC(below). I have ensured that this same section is present for all of my book's frame files too (in their Reference page sections for TOCs).
    ChapterTitleTOC
    Heading1TOC
    Heading2TOC:
    And my generated TOC

    I have this happen all the time in FM9.
    Do you already have a TOC in your book file with the correct reference pages?
    Sometimes I have to do it twice, I don't know why, but if you have a TOC in your
    book file and then make another TOC, mine usually works...just a thought..

  • Custom Leader Dots

    I should know this but am having trouble making uniform leader dots for a ToC
    no matter the size/font of each line entry.
    I did read one thread, but it wasn't clear. Someone suggested adding underline to a leader that
    you can then customize with a dotted rule in character styles?
    I have always done shift+dash in the leader field in tabs but this tactic doesn't give
    me access to stroke options.
    Thanks,
    Jane

    Thanks riott.girl. I must not have explained my situation
    well enough. I have different font styles and sizes in the
    Table of contents list. If you just use a period, for example, each line
    entry will have a line of leader dots based on that
    font size and style. This means they all look different.
    I am trying to find a way to easily make them all the
    same.
    The only way to do that using your suggestion is to
    then select each line of dots and set up different
    character styles. But they won't be identical without
    lots of work. The line of dots mimics the letterspacing
    of the font. Some are tighter, some are more loose.
    There must be a way to make them all identical without
    so much fiddling.
    If you're not sure what I'm talking about, set up a
    list with different levels of text (like main head, subhead,
    sub-subhead), style them differently and apply a period
    in the leader box.

  • Compensating for tabs and leader dots when converting to HTML

    A FrameMaker document contains a series of "tables" which are actually very long lists. They have the appearance of a TOC: a text phrase, a long line of leader dots, a tab, and a numeral at the end of the dots.
    Since the tabs and leader dots vanish when converting to HTML, what might I do to either reconstruct the missing dots or re-create the look of a table for these lists?
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Hello Karen,
    There is no way to automatically replace the tabs or leaders. During the conversion all of the information is completely stripped away, leaving no trace of it in the html code.  In my documents I typically set them up like this:
    In FM
    Test Switch[colon][space] …………………..OFF
    Test Switch: …………………..OFF
    When converted to html
    Test Switch: OFF
    There is another, but more difficult way to keep your tabs and leaders somewhat intact, by the use of tables. If you put the data in a table you can keep the information separated by columns and rows. Also you must manual put periods or dashed instead having FM do it. When this is converted to html the data will remain in the tables. By removing the borders of the tables in FM it will appear clean, however; once you convert it to html you’ll see the borders again. You can either leave it this way or control the table properties by a CSS.
    I’m not sure how my examples will show on the Adobe Forum, but I put them in.
    In FM
    Test Switch
    OFF
    In FM without borders
    Test Switch
    OFF
    When converted to html
    Test Switch
    OFF
    When converted to html with CSS
    Test Switch
    OFF
    I hope this helps

  • Nested Tab Leader Style for Price List Issue

    Hello,
    I wanted set up a character style for a tab leader that makes the font weight light as opposed to the bold paragraph style. I tried two character styles, one as a tab leader, and one as a dotted underline and got different results.
    When I set up the nested style on my paragraph style using the character style "Leader Dots" is changing the price from bold to light.
    When I set up the nested style on my paragraph style using the character style "Dotted Line" the dotted underline goes to the full right-justified width.
    Both issues I think are b/c the tab is right-justified. See the attached images for examples.
    I am trying to figure out a way to have either character style stop before the price, but keep the price right-justified. So in a nutshell it would be… Bold item name / Light tab leader / Bold price
    Thank you for any help.

    Aha! Peter, you're right!

  • Potential bug in javamail + qmail when email body starts with dots

    I may have discovered a potential issue with using JavaMail + QMail server. It appears that if there is a message in my mailbox which starts with either one dot ('.') or a series of dots ('...hello there'), when I attempt to do a :
    inbox.fetch(messages, profile);
    I get the following JavaMail error:
    javax.mail.MessagingException: error getting size;

    at com.sun.mail.pop3.POP3Message.getSize(POP3Message.java:100)

    This issue seems to only occur on qmail. When I try to read the same email starting with one or multiple leading dots, I can retreive it without any issues.
    Has anyone else experienced anything of the sort?

    Almost certainly it's a QMail bug. Turn on session
    debugging and
    examine the protocol trace to see what the server is
    really saying.
    If you need help interpreting it, send it to us at

    or post it here.you might be right. here's the output from the javax.mail debug mode. note that it appears that qmail potentially returns the headers as well as an extraneous dot ('.') and that is what causes the whole issue:

  • How can I make leading .... appear in toc. P1 is broken, P2 is fine.

    Help please - I am desperate.
    I have a 2-page toc in a new  book. I imported the toc format from a good toc and now page 2 looks great, but I cannot make the leading dots appear on page 1 and I need this damn book in one hour.
    Thanks
    Phil

    > What is a prototype para please
    In the fileTOC.fm, on Reference Page TOC, this stuff:
    openObjectId <$relfilename>:<$ObjectType> <$ObjectId>
    <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
    <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
      <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
      <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
      <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
        <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
        <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
    You need to click in each one to find out what xyzzyTOC paragraph tag it controls.
    If the >... is missing, you either have no tab in the proto, or no tabs defined for the tag (or tabs that don't work: toow low, out-of-column, irrational justification, etc.).

  • Another tab leader problem

    One of my toc paragraphs (3rd line below) is inserting the leader dots in the middle of the <$paratext>:
    Chapter 3: Service Interface.......................................................................3
         Service Contracts................................................................................ ..3
              package Request.................................................................Access 4
    Any ideas?

    The text entry that is the **source** for the "package Request Access" TOC entry probably has an extra tab in it, in front of the word "Access", possibly a tab instead of a space.
    If you're not doing so, you can select FM's View > Text Symbols to display special characters such as tabs, which appear as right-facing angles.

  • Add tab dots

    Hi,
    I am in new to scripting; i need the leader dots in every first column of all the tables.
    Please correct my code.
    var myTable = app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().tables.everyItem().getElements();
    for(t=0; t<myTable.length; t++)
    var col = myTable[t].columns[0].select();
    var colwidth = columns[0].width();
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "(.+)$";
    found = app.selection[0].findGrep (true);
    for (i = 0; i < found.length; i++)
    found[i].insertionPoints[-1].contents = "\t";
    tabstops[0].position = colwidth - "6pt";

    There are a couple of tricks to making the content wrap earlier than the paragraph right margin.
    1. In the original source content, judiciously use non-breaking spaces (ctrl+space) between words, e.g. AMENMENDENT _ SERVICES , where " _ " represents FM's hard/non-breaking space.
    2. In the paratag definition for the the TOC entry, on the Advanced tab, set the Word Spacing Minimum value to be much greater than the Maximum value, e.g. 200% for minimum and 100% for Maximum. You can play with these by increasing or decreasing the ratio to get the wrap to occur moe or less where you want it. This is an undocumented "feature".
    Note: I would also suggest trying to use a right tab-stop instead to align your GEN entries.

  • How do I clear environment variables in 10.6

    I am having some difficulty in configuring custom paths with my environment variable, environment.plist.  In setting up some of my software, I am trying to configure custom paths so that I can eventually store preferences on the server for all users to access the same tools.  I had this working up until last week, when I installed a second piece of software, that modified my environment.plist file, which now doesn't work at all.
    My original environment.plist file, which is located in ~/MacOSX, was as follows:
    <plist version="1.0">
      <dict>
        <key>NUKE_PATH</key>
        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/Nuke</string>

        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/OFX</string>
      </dict>
    </plist>
    Which worked just fine.  It was then changed to:
    <plist version="1.0">
      <dict>
        <key>NUKE_PATH</key>
        <string>/Users/jamesdavidson/Documents/Nuke_Gizmos/Nuke</string>

      </dict>
    </plist>
    and now, the only variable that shows up is PATH.  I edited the file back to the original, without the PATH variable, restarted my machine, and yet my Variables did not change...  Is there somewhere else that I should be looking?  Some other file?   this is what I get from terminal:
    $ echo $NUKE_PATH
    $ echo $OFX_PLUGIN_PATH
    $ echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/Applications/Deadline /Resources/bin
    And this even after deleting my environment.plist file.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James

    I hope you made a typo in your post and meant ~/.MacOSX.  You typed ~/MacOSX, i.e., without the leading dot.
    At any rate $PATH is a predefined shell variable so I suspect you cannot define that one with this environment.plist mechanism.  The "proper" way to set up such things is with a  ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, ~/.profile, or IMO, best of all. ~/.bashrc.  These are scripts the shell looks for during launch (somewhat depending on whether it's a login shell or not -- see the bash reference manual).
    If bash is executed interactively it will also first look for /etc/profile.  And it will cause a $PATH variable to be created.  So that is probably the definition you are seeing all the time until you create an appropriate startup script of your own (e.g., ~/.bashrc) to override or modifiy the existing $PATH variable.
    Note, I may have paraphrased a lttile too much so see section 6.2 Bash Startup Files in the bash reference documentation for the complete proper description of the order these files are used.  If you have the developer tools installed look for bashref.html.  Otherwise it's online here.
    Finally, if you look at /etc/profile you will see it attempting to execute /usr/libexec/path_helper -s.  Try that in terminal and see if that isn't the $PATH definition you are currently seeing.

  • How to access proxy settings in terminal

    I want to use git in the terminal, but unfortunately I'm sometimes (but not always) behind a firewall that requires me to use a proxy server.
    I've successfully set up environments for all these locations, including the proxy settings that are relevant in each context, but I'm unable to access them in the terminal (i.e. there's no HTTP_PROXY environment variable). My idea is to 'inherit' the system wide proxy settings in the terminal and use them to configure git.
    Is there any way to access the proxy settings in the terminal.

    In you home directory, create a file called .bash_profile (notice the leading dot)
    nano .bash_profile
    add to that file
    export HTTP_PROXY="http://your.proxy.information:nnn"
    Save the file
    Restart the Terminal session.
    Command line Git should work via the environment variable you just created.
    NOTE: you will need to use
    ls -a
    to see the .bash_profile in a Terminal session, and because the leading dot makes it an invisible file, the Finder will not show it without some magic Finder Foo
