Leaking netbios packets over dial up connection
I have used a verizon USB internet card for over 1 1/2 years and have just recently started having issues. After about 6 minutes I am disconnected from the internet. After several hours on the phone with verizon tech support, I was informed that my computer was "leaking netbios packets over my dial up connection." When I called apple the guy I spoke to told me he had never heard of such a thing. Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it???
I guess you're using BootCamp and WinXP ??
In Windows, right-click on the hard drive
Highlight TCP/IP and select properties
Click on the Advanced button
Go to the WINS tab and select "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
Click OK to accept changes and close the window

Video Chat over Dial-up Connection
Hi,
Is it possible to have a video chat over a dial-up connection? If it is, I'm interested to hear what is the experience like from anyone who has tried it. Is it acceptable? How about having 3 person AV conference, and one connection is dial-up?
I'm looking at buying an MacBook for my parents so they can chat and see the grandkids but they only have dial-up and getting broadband is not really an option since where they are it's still ridiculously expensive.
Thanks for your replies,
AlexHi,
Since I started with iChat in 2003 I have only ever seen one post about a successful iChat Video over Dial-Up.
As I recall it was from Britain to somewhere in Ireland and the Irish end was using IDSN at the time at about 66kbps and that it was late in the day.
The Minimum spec stated is for an Internet connection of 100kbps but iChat will give you an Error message when it detects a Bandwidth or Connection speed less than 50kbps.
Realistically this (above) was a fluke and the answer is NO.

Control Packets over non-MPLS connection
Is it possible to configure Cisco router 7204 to send BGP packets not over LSP that has been established for the BGP peer, PE router, but over non-MPLS connection, while all data traffic to the PE router get forwarded through the LSP. In other words, I'm wondering it is possible to constrain all control
packets, including BGP, OSPF and LDP, to the non-MPLS interfaces, even though the LSP exists for the destination prefixes for the BGP packets.
I hope it could be applied to establishing MP-iBGP sessions between PE routers in MPLS/VPN network, in other words, we want all BGP packets not be forwarded through the LSP established between two PE routers, which is actually an ATM LER system since we have established non-MPLS connections between LERs in order to forward control packets including routing protocol and MPLS signaling protocol.
Any response will greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Yongjun.Yongjun,
r1------r2-----r3
\-------r4----/
r1, r3 are PEs
r2 is a P rotuer
r4 is a non-LSR
r1-r2-r3 is LSP
r1-r4-r3 is a ip path, non-lsp
Then, you can do 'local-policy routing on r1 and r3 to send the Bgp control traffic over r1--r4--r3 path.
config on r1:
ip local policy route-map foo
route-map foo perm 10
match ip addr 100
set ip next-hop
access-list 100 perm tcp host eq 179 host
access-list 100 perm tcp host host eq 179
you got to do similar config on r3.
let me know if you have further q's.

How to prevent packet forwarding over non-MPLS connection.
I'm wondering if it is possible to configure Cisco ESR to not forward packet over non-MPLS connection(VPI/VCI=0/32) when an LSP for its destination has not been established, while allowing control packets(BGP, LDP, OSPF) to be sent over non-MPLS connection. The reason why I ask about is as follows.
Referring to the following network configuration,
R1 --- Cisco_ESR --- ATM_LSR --- LER --- R2
<--> non-MPLS connection
----------------------->
LSPs
----------------------->
In the ordinary operation, when a packet arrives at Cisco_LER from R1, it gets forwarded over an LSP if available, while getting forwarded over non-MPLS connection(VPI/VCI=0/32) if the corresponding LSP is not available. In the configuration mentioned above,ATM_LSR does software-based packet processing for incoming packet through non-MPLS channel, while doing cell-switching for LSP traffic. Thus if ESR sends packet over non-MPLS connection, e.g, STM-1c, the ATM_LSR could get crashed or time-critical control traffic could be delayed or lost, thereby resulting in BGP/LDP session failure between ESR and ATM_LSR or LER.
In summary, my question is how to prevent Cisco_ESR from forwarding packets over non-MPLS connection when LSPs for their destinations are not available due to LSP failures.
Thanks.
Yongjun. It already is, except for Aliens, they have access to everything on your phone(they always have had this access) .

Sharing the dial-up connection of a PC laptop--either wired, or wirelessly
Hello, fellow Mac users! I just got my first Mac--a beautiful 1.83 GHz MacBook. I LOVE the switch to OS X from Windows XP.
Anyway, here's problem:
I am leaving on vacation, and, unfortunately the resort at which we are staying does not have Internet Access, so I am forced to use dial-up. Unfortunately, since I have heard very bad reports about the Apple USB Modem, I can't get a modem for the MacBook itself, so I will use my PC laptop's modem. The PC Laptop is a Windows XP Pro machine. So, here's the problem--try as I might, I just cannot get the darn PC laptop to share its dial-up connection; either over a ethernet cross-over cable, or adhoc Wi-Fi.
So, please help me get this to work, or I will be forced to use a PC laptop to check e-mail, RSS feeds, and anything else online.
Thanks in advance! (And thanks, Steve Jobs, for helping to create some of the best computers out there!)Here is from the help support on xp :
Configure,a dial-up
connection, click the connection that you want to
configure, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change
settings of this connection.
Do one or more of the following:
To configure dialing devices that your computer uses
to make a connection (a modem, for example), phone
numbers, host addresses, country or region codes, or
dialing rules, click the General tab.
To configure dialing and redialing options, or X.25
settings, click the Options tab.
To configure identity authentication, which is a way
to help verify your computer’s identity when making a
connection, data encryption (which codes the content
so that it’s less likely to be readable by someone
other than the intended recipient), or terminal window
and scripting options, click the Security tab.
To configure the remote access server that you want to
connect to and protocols (the format that your
computer uses to communicate with other computers)
used for this connection, click the Networking tab.
To turn Internet Connection Sharing on or off or
configure your computer to establish a dial-up
connection automatically, click the Advanced tab.
When you run the
Network Setup Wizard and enable Internet Connection
Sharing, some protocols, services, interfaces, and
routes are configured automatically. The following
table describes these configured items.
Configured item Action
IP address 192.168.0.1 Configured with a subnet mask
of 255.255.255.0 on the LAN adapter that is connected
to the home or small office network.
Autodial feature Enabled.
Static default IP route Created when the dial-up
connection is established.
Internet Connection Sharing service Started.
DHCP allocator Enabled with the default range of
192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Unique
addresses in the range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254
are allocated to private network clients.
So try to use dhcp on your network setting or something between those range listed above with a cross over cable (make sure the cross over cable has good connection). -
Jar download not working over dial up
Hey,
Our webstart application works just fine while connected to the lan at work. The various jars required by the application are downloaded without any problems.
However, when I try to access the same application over dial up (I have tried netzero and aol), the jar download fails in a rather weird fashion.
On clicking on the link for the application, the main jar e.g. main-application.jar downloads just fine, but the next jar in line fails with the following message
Unable to load resource: https://server.com:443/application/lib/axis.jar

Now, when i click on the application launch again, it proceeds to download the next jar e.g axis.jar in this case without a problem, but it will fail on the next jar

<jar href="lib/castor-0.9.5.2-xml.jar"/>
<jar href="lib/commons-beanutils-1.5.jar"/>
<jar href="lib/commons-collections-2.1.jar"/>
Note : All of this works fine when im not using dial up to connect.
Does anyone have any ideas ?
Any help is greatly appreciatedpboeykens,
It may definitely be something with my network and/or firewall configuration. I'm just not sure where to look yet.
I have tried modifying apache settings to no avail.
I've tried turning KeepAlives off, changing the keep alive timeout and the max number of keep alives allowed on apache, but none of these setting changes had any effect on the jar download.
If you have any suggestions for what I might look at as far as my firewall settings, then I can take that to my security department.
My next step is to try and enable the debug logging with webstart to maybe get a better idea of why it thinks that no jar is available.
Thanks -
Initiate a dial-up connection or detect whether I am connected to the net
I want to initiate a dial-up connection from my java program and also to detect whether I am connected to the internet or not.
well I am developing a proxy server and I want to add
a feature of dial-up demand that detects the current
connection status and if not connected to the net then
call the dial-up dialers in dial-up networking folder
and then connects to the internetI'd say it works like I wrote earlier:
Keep yourself in the proxy-server the connections-status.
If your proxy-server runs on a normal PC, it should be enough to try to connect to the internet.
But do you need control over multiple dial-up dialers etc., this probably isn't enough.
If I can find the time, I'll look into it.
Maybe direct access to the modem is also an option.
That depends on the modem of course and then you probably also need additional scripting. I guess that's not what you're looking for, but if you need info on that, it's probably also an option to look at a wvdial-script on Linux for connection to the internet. It might also be a problem if you have multiple channels for connecting onto the internet (cable, phone,ASDL etc.) -
USB Modem dial up connection Mac 2 Mac - possible?
I am trying to find a replacement terminal emulation programme to replace ZTerm. Now that I have an Apple USB modem, ZTerm is useless but I can't find a program that will work in a similar way using USB rather than Serial to connect two computers over a dial up connection.
Anybody?

E71x Dial-up connection for internet access on ph...
When I lived in Africa I would use either google talk or skype to speak with my family back in the States. Wifi was extremely rare especially in my area so I had to connect via a dial-up connection. When I bought my E71x, I installed "Fring" on it (an amazing app) and I am able to call and speak to someone on google talk or skype over my phone. My question is, how do I setup a dialup access point for my cell phone so that I can access the internet and google talk/skype by that connection? Thanks, Joshua
I don't use either Fring or Skype in my handset, I use a program called truphone from www.truphone.com and the network settings enable you to use it via 3G GPRS or WiFi.
You should check with your network operator that this is permitted, as most see VoIP services as revenue loss and will disable the ports or charge extra for the service.
Shunts...
I will mostly be communicating with a Nokia E72 Zodium Black
Nokia E72-1 with Vr 051.018.207.04 Software

MSN Dial-up connection will not connect
Hello,
I just purchased an iMac with Mac OS X operating system. On my old computer I had an MSN dial-up connection and have tried to use this same internet connection on my new mac but for some reason the MSN will not connect. I tried a different dial-up service which did work, but need the MSN to connect. Any suggestions on how to get it to connect? Thank you!Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Why do you need MSN to connect?
MSN Mail is usually over Hotmail, which Mac OS X Mail can pickup using
http://sourceforge.net/projects/httpmail-plugin
MSN Chat is available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=msnmessenger
You may need http://www.allume.com/ 's Stuffit Expander to extract that file.
Is there any other service you can't get? -

I established a dial up connection by updating to automatic the remote managers and telephony in administrative tool services area on my XP system according to firefox help instructions.
At first I had a dial up connection but I unchecked an item in the
dial up connection box. I am not sure what I unchecked or toggled
off. I then lost the dial up connection. I need to get the dial connection dialog box back. What needs to be done
Thank you.I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour. -
Sending dial up connection to a wired base station?
Hi have a powerbook G4 Ti with airport card, an extreme base station and an emac with a dial up connection. I was wondering if anybody knows how I can route the dial up connection via ethernet to the base station so I can get the dial up connetion through airport to surf wirelessly on the powerbook. Any comments greatly appreciated. TIA
Presumably you don't want to do this the easy way, by using the dialup modem built into the Airport Extreme Base Station?
To use the dialup modem in the eMac is a bit convoluted. You need to do the following:
- set up internet connection sharing (in System Preferences->Sharing) on the eMac. See also:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh336.html
- you need to run the Airport Admin Utility from the Powerbook, and disable the router built into the Base Station by unchecking the box next to "Distribute IP addresses" found under the Network tab of that utility.
- you need to cable the Base Station's LAN (not WAN) port to the eMac's ethernet port
- and then every time you want to access the internet you must (a) first establish the dialup connection from the eMac and then (b) restart the Powerbook to force it to obtain a renewed IP address from the eMac.
It would also be much easier to just get rid of the Base Station, install an Airport card in the eMac, and use the eMac as a "software base station". -
Any idea how to download itunes update on a dial-up connection?
Got a new ipod 30gb for xmas. Attached it to my mac and was told I needed to update itunes. Came to this site and started the download. Three days later and download will not complete.
Unfortunately I only have access to dial-up in this backwoods part of Maine. Apple support tells me I must have broadband, claimed it said so on the ipod packaging. But it doesn't, it says broadband "recommended", does not say "required."
I emailed support again and asked then to send me a hardcopy of the update. They refused, suggested I get someone to burn a copy of the update for me.
Sounds like pretty crappy support to me, as the package never said I couldn't use the ipod with dial-up. What has happened to the much vaunted Apple support that so many Apple addicts tell me about?
Can anyone help me?Send me an e-mail at
r i c h f l e m i n g :at: m a c :dot: c o m
with your mailing address and I'll ship a CD with the latest version of iTunes for you.
Don't worry about the shipping or anything. Consider it a New Year's present from a total stranger.
P.S.
I'll also put the Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo updater on the CD, since its a 117MB download and you'd probably never be able to do it over dial-up.
This will bring your Mac Mini up to the latest version of your operating system. -
I would like to do this:
*Put these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers...*
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
But I am scared to death to try. I get connected without a hitch now, and I do NOT want to disturb that!!! I don't know what I am doing with this, but if it will improve the speed and stability of my dial-up connection so I can successfully download and install my updates, I will risk it.
How much chance do I have of messing my connect-ability up altogether?
And how do I go about doing it properly?
Cyan99.999999% safe and easy to undo, but to make it even nearer 100%...
In the Network Pref Pane, choose the Location drop down, choose Edit Locations, then choose Duplicate... now you have one you can paste those numbers into, and just switch Locations back if need be without changing any numbers.
It's safe though anyway really.:-)
