[THE Forum] Audio recording with Java / JMF
Hello,
I would like to gather any useful information about audio recording. I've worked on this area for months now and I am still facing many problems, namely:
Can't record on linux with JMF,
Can't pause on linux with JMF,
Problems when two soud cards are on the PC,
Problems with Windows NT,
When using the pause feature, the sound is transformed while recording a song.

capture sound. I get messages like these: "Couldn't initialize audio device" or "java.io.IOException: Cannot open audio device for input."
My system: RedHat 7.3, J2SDK1.4.1, JMF2.1.1.c and SoundBlaster audio card.
Could you tell me how have you configured your system or how have you got capturing sound?

I have a new iPhone 5S. While trying to learn about it, I accidentally recorded a voice memo with no content. I cannot now figure out how to get rid of it. There is a banner across the top of my phone with this memo which I don't want. I have deleted it from iTunes but cannot get it off the phone. Help!
The banner usually indicates that the memo is "Paused." If you go back into voice memos, touch the word "Done" beside the big red pause button, give it a name, then it will show in a list. Touch the memo in the list then touch the trash can icon that should appear.

I'm moderating a competition which will be about 8 hours long. I need to have a video/audio recording of the whole thing in case an answer is contested.
We will need to stop recording and access the footage as the day progresses. Any suggestions as to how best to accomplish this? I have an iPad and a Macbook Air.

I do not want the learner to be able to click through the project until they hear the audio recorded on each slide, however I also would like them to have click to advance to the next slide. Is there a way to set up these 2 functions together?
I don't like that approach for adult learners, cannot refrain from mentioning that.
Don't use a playbar but create custom navigation. You'll need a next button on each slide that appears after the audio (in timeline). Since slides will not all have the same duration you'll need an individual button per slide, a shape button on master slide or timed for the rest of the project will not be possible. -
External Hard Drive and Audio Recording Application
Hi, hope everyone is doing well today. I'm new to this forum but I have been occasionally browsing it from time to time and find it very useful. So I figured I would post a couple questions that I have.
First of all I would like to tell you all excatly what I want to do with my computer. Currently I am trying to optimize my computer for the Audio Recording Application I have *Cubase SX 3* I recently just upgraded my RAM from 512 KB to 1.5 GB. My next purchased is most definitaly going to be an external hard drive, which leads me to my first question.
1. If someone could recomend me an external hard drive that is abosolutly amazing for audio recording and such around $150. I would ONLY be using the drive to save my audio files. Definitaly needs to be firewire also.
2. Next question is. I've heard of people booting from their external hard drives which has nothing but there OS and there audio recording application. That way when they boot it up they don't have processes running "Behind the scenes" and taking up some processor power. Is this true? If so, how would you going about doing this and what would I need?
3. If anybody else that is reading this is like me and does alot of audio editing on their iMac G5 computer if you could give me some tips in optimizing the performance of the computer in order to get the most out of it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hard drives are pretty much the same. 7200 rpm are obviously a bit faster than 5400rpm. Why Firewire? USB 2 is about the same speed as standard Firewire 400, but the drives are cheaper.

OS processes are going to be running in the background regardless of which disk the OS is on, that's what an OS does! If you don't want more processes simply make sure you don't have any other apps open. I don't know Cubase, but a G5 will handle video editing along with background tasks no problem, and video editing generally involves far more data manipulation than just sound, even if you're doing multiple tracks.
You can easily install the OS on an external hard drive using your original system install disk. Simply connect the drive and choose that as the destination in the installer. To boot from that you would choose it in System preferences/Startup Disk. You could minimise that system by deleting other applications from that drive's Applications folder, turning off internet connections, disabling all widgets etc, but as long as you only have Cubase open it shouldn't make too much difference.
3. If anybody else that is reading this is like me
and does alot of audio editing on their iMac G5
computer if you could give me some tips in optimizing
the performance of the computer in order to get the
most out of it.
There's not really much else to optimise. Modern Macs are not like computers of old, and OS X is a very modern system, not requiring the type of disk optimisation etc that there used to be.

Stereo Audio recording in Captivate 6?
Hi, I am having problems with capturing stereo audio in sync with the video, in Captivate 6. I am making training videos for music software and have looped back the audio from the programme into Captivate, in order to record it's output. It monitors fine, but it looks as though Captivate is only recording the audio in mono - and there are no settings to change this. Is this the case? I really need stereo sound on the input, otherwise functions in the programme cannot be demonstrated correctly. I have looked through the forums and it would seem that stereo recording was definitely included in earlier versions (as it caused some users the opposite problem of sound from a microphone only appearing on one side). I am using Captivate version 6 on Windows 7. Please can you help me? Cheers, Mike

There is no option to select the audio recording as stereo or mono at time of recording.
Can you tell me that have you installed captivate as a part of suite or it is a stand alone Product?
If you have installed Captivate as a part of E-learning suite there is a software called as Adobe Auditon which also gets installed as a part of suite , which can serve your Purpose , It can record as stereo as well as mono. and you can directly insert the audio generated from this software in Captivate.
And In Captivate also there is an option in Edit > Prefrences>Publish settings.
You can uncheck the Publish as Mono option while Publishing and check if it works for you.

Is Logic Pro the Best Audio Recording Software for Mac?
Couple questions. I do a lot of audio production and work currently. I use a gateway with Cubase, and its not bad, but I feel like I need something mroe high end.
I'm looking at the 17 inch Imac. Does anyone record using this computer? How's it sound? Is there any way to put in a new soundcard or something if i don't like the current one?
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best audio recording software for the mac? Are there others as well?
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Does the Pro version have superior mixing capabilties. I am primarily going to be micing a guitar amp and having a mixer run into a firewire port, and also using a preamp for my guitar direct into the computers USB.
Lastly, how are the mixing features on Logic Pro vs. Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing as well, and use VST plugins. Speaking of that, will it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through VST or Midi like Cubase will?

Yes, you do indeed need sth more high end.

It's not an iMac, but a faithful PowerBook G4 that I am using. Apples Core Audio is awesome. Your sound, however, will depend on your interface.

To me personally, Logic sounds warmer and bigger than any ProTools system I've ever heard. From what yopu described as the work you need to do, there is no comparable application. Logic also offers you many more features above and beyond what you currently need to do.

Everybody is using PT, and you should maybe get a Light Edition version of it. However, as stated above, Logic offers by far more possibilities.

For your purpose, Logic does have superior mixing capabilities. In my humble opinion, only the popularity of PT made it become the choice of studios and engineers, but things are turning...

If you do post production mixing, forget about Logic Express altogether and go for Logic Pro. LP will accomodate tons of plug-ins, and it comes with a bunch of great one's as well!
The format for the plug-ins is called A(udio) U(nit) and works flawlessly. Many VST plug-ins are also available in AU format and the development of those is moving fast forward.
In other words, yes, you will be able to use BFD in Logic by means of the AU format.

LE8 won't remember audio recording path (among other issues...)
Why won't LE8 remember the audio recording path I set for each project? Each time I open a project I've been working on (by dropping the project onto the LE8 icon in the dock-LAME) and arm a track to record, it says that that the path to the external HD is not found (-but it knows the name of the external HD somehow). I'll then open the record prefs, set the recording path correctly to my external HD and the coressponding folder, save the project, and record without incident (or at least the same incident) for the rest of my session. The next time I open the project the same thing happens.

As for the specifics:
The image size is 4.31M. If I go to double the size and change nothing else, the image size jumps up to a whopping 17.2M.
If you double the dimensions of an image the area is increased fourfold – so what is the problem there?
The image dimensions are 500px x 135px, 300DPI, 8bit, RGB color. This is at 100% zoom. Those are the settings I normally use, but for some reason it’s showing the file as about half of the size it should be. (Tumblr post for comparison—they are 500px wide.)
The introduction or Retina (and other high resolution) displays and browsers actually up-scaling images to accommodate those screen resolutions seems to have confused some users about the concept of pixels.
Could you please post a full size screenshot on this Forum of the image at View > 100% in Photoshop and on tumblr? -

Steps to create
Create project, Subproject, Object (freely definable, for the purpose of
identification) Use create icon in the menu. For example
Project FI Finance
Subproject GL GL MASTER

2. Continue F8, Now you will see series of steps. Select the step and execute
it (Ctrl-F8). In each steps, we will do some activity and save it. Then
system prompts for the next activity.
3. Maintain object attributes. By default the screen in display mode, Click

activity assign files). In this screen select Batch input recording and
in Recording give name (freely definable) sal GL01 and click on Overview.
In this screen button (Recordings overview). Now click on create button for
recording. Give name and description, Now it will ask for the transaction
code, enter the transaction code and enter the data, the way you want fill in
the SAP screens/fields with legacy data. Then save the transaction. Now save
again to save the recording. After that you select the button default all,
then save it. And come back, now the cursor is on next activity.
4. Maintain source structures. Here create the structure by specifying name
(freely definable).
5. Maintain source fields. In this screen, click on copy fields (Ctrl+F8),
here select From data file(field names in 1st line). Now the system asks
for the file, select your text file, the system will copy the fiedls from
text file (tab delimited file. It contains field names in the first row).
Save it.
6. Maintain structure relations. Generally, we need not do anything here.
7. Maintain field mapping and conversation rules. Here put the cursor on the
field and click on source field, now you can see the list of field available,
from which select one which is equal to the field on which you out the
cursor. You can also write coding (ABAP Code) on any field for the purpose of
validation of data. Save it.
8. Maintain fixed values, translations, user-defined routines. Here also you
can maintain values, if required.
9. Specify files. In this screen, place the cursor on Legacy data, then click
on create button. The system asks for the file name, (the text file, in which
the legacy data is there), enter the file name, description and select Data
for one source structure (table), delimiter as Tabulator, file structure
as Field names at the beginning of the file.
10. Assign files. The file name you specified in earlier step comes
automatically here, If the file name does not come, then click
on assignment button and assign the file.
11. Read data. Here specify the transaction number (the number not less
than the number of rows in the text file). Execute it.
12. Display read data. Here, you can see the values, how the system read the
data.
13. Convert data. Here specify the transaction number (the number not less
than the number of rows in the text file). Execute it.
14. Display converted data. Here, you can see the values, how the system
converted the data, after interpreting conversion rules specified in the
earlier steps. This is the data that is actually goes into SAP, once the
Batch Input session is run.
15. Create batch input session. Specify the batch input session name for
identification and also select the keep session.
16. Run Batch Input Session. Select the batch input and click Process, from
there select foreground or background. Now the program runs and update
the data in to SAP. You can analyze the batch input for the successful
postings, errors.

Animation not showing in screen during audio recording

Giving advice on audio recording
I first started using Captivate when it was Robodemo 5 and
that was not all that long ago. I remember when I first downloaded
it. I thought it was the greatest training software ever. However I
did have problems. The most long lived problems were with audio
recordings. I know that many people have. On some of the forums I
read where one person had given up on Captivate. They did not like
the inconsistent recording of the audio. Sometimes it would be deep
and resounding the next slide would sound as if you are at the end
of a tunnel,and the very next recording would sound metallic and
soft sounding.
Just like with everything else if you are persistent enough
you will find a solution. I tried various mikes some expensive
others less expensive. They all produced the same results.
Inconsistent recordings. The recordings to me were passeable but
all not that great. Then I ordered one of those newer usb condensor
podcastiing mikes.
All I can say is wow! Those new podcasting mikes they level
out the sound.You can still notice that one recording sounds a
tiny,tiny,different than the next,but barely noticeable.
Most of us are not radio announcers or professional
broadcasters however to me the mike made an incredible difference
in Captivates audio recording quality.Hello Rick!
The microphone is around 80 dollars, it comes with a soft
ware preamp, and I have always recorded directly into Captivate.
Even a low bit rates and encoding frequencies it still sounds good.
All my Captivate files are produced for the web. Html and .swf
files.
It is the mike Rick that made the difference. It is a Samson
microphone. It is quite large and heavy. I found out about it
through podcasters. I wondered what podcasters were using to record
audio. Audio quality would be important to them. What I wanted was
the best mike for recording onto a computer. The podcasters are
fanatics about the mikes they use.

Most online music stores carry these . Find one that you can
trust. Just Google Samson microphones.
Everyone can have good quality audio recorded directly into
Captivate. For those new at audio recording listen to podcasters
and other broadcasters. Animate your voice to make it more
interesting,speak at the same volume level, get a "pop" filter or
make your own with a nylon and reformed wire coat hangar. Practice
with your voice ,adjust the settings ,test various settings out and
soon you will be saying " wow"!

Logic 8 won't play back audio recorded at 48 kHz
So I was recording a small project in Logic 8 on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) the other day when I noticed that audio recorded at 48 kHz wasn't playing back at all. The wave form appeared in the audio region after recording, but the meters on OUT 1-2 weren't lighting up at all. When I switched the project mode to 44.1 kHz, the audio played back fine (except it sounded pitched down and slow). I was in a hurry so I just recorded the whole project at 44.1 kHz instead, even though it should have been 48 kHz.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?A lot of people have reported this, and it happens to me pretty frequently. Gotta be a known bug, but of course since Apple is always mum about this stuff with absolutely no communication to its customers, we won't know until the next version of Logic is released.

Can we do Audio Recording direct from phone on Captivate 5?

I wonder is it possible for us to do an audio recording from our phone via a headset with an in-built mic. Something is an audio conferencing on the phone while we have netmeeting to share our documents? Or we have to do it via skype or msn directly which mean a mic input into our laptop in order to record down the meeting on Captivate 5 in full video with audio?Thanks so much imjolly, I have tried on numerous occasions connecting the HH4 to the test socket in the master NTE5 (in the attic!) to no avail, I'm using filters, I've changed filters over (we've several) unplugged everything, I haven't done a quiet line test (will have to find out how), the speedchecker gives us 4-6 Mbps (just at the mo we're getting 4Mb) and I found these figures in the router; I could find other logs too I'm sure! Many thanks again - I'm optimistic about July!

Question about Audio line-in/optical in/Audio out/optical out
I have a late 2009 27" iMac (v3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). I note that on Apple's description of the rear ports, what I thought were simply headphone (Audio Out) and microphone (Audio In) jacks are described as:
1. Headphone/optical digital [S/PDIF] audio out:
"Line/Headphone output
"The headphone output is automatically selected for audio output if no external S/PDIF optical digital output device is detected. The headphone output supports a stereo data stream at bit depths of 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample and at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz. While, as an Olde School audiophile guy (62, and I still have vinyl!), I generally understand the gist of all this, I'm not at all hip to what S/PDIF optical digital output and/or digital audio input can do for me. So my questions are:
1. Can somebody please wise me up to the usage(s) of these optical inputs and outputs on the iMac?
2. The Apple description says,under "Line/Headphone output":
"PCM: 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz
AC-3: 16 bits per sample at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, or 192 kHz"
and under "Line input

BartThanks for the info. Turns out there's an even easier way to do it than using the "Audio Midi Setup": through the prefs in the latest (and probably some previous) version of VLC, which is currently Version 1.0.2 Goldeneye (Intel 64bit).
Now if we could only get full native resolution (or at least 1080p) HDMI input into the Mini-DPs of our 2560 x 1440-capable 27" iMacs and actually have it display something WAY better than 720p (half the resolution of which the 27" iMac is capable) to which Apple limited it, without having to buy a third-party $270.00 HDMI-to Mini-DPP converter and scaler. Call me crazy, but it seems kinda silly to have to pay another $300 to buy a device that will scale the 27" iMac's resolution back up to a measly 1080p, let alone its native 2560 x 1440. But, as the

It is extremely depressing and frustrating to spend however long it takes -- and it takes ME a long time, as I have a 60-year-ingrained tendency towards verbosity -- to ask and post a question or message, only to have the message never even posted to the forum, but, without any sort of consultation with me so that I may learn from, and correct, my errors, uncaringly consigned to the illimitable void by hands to whom there is no appeal or orison.
