Learning Action Script

Hello there,
I've now been learning Flash for a couple of months now and
have learnt many things. Though, one thing which I struggle a great
deal with and I'm sure if I learnt would open many new doors -
that's Action Script. Is anyone able to direct me in th right
direction of where to learn Action Script?
A Happy New Year!
All the best,
Kristopher (UK).

Flashkit is not the site it once was... now it is too full of
advertising and banners that the actual content is so far down the
page you have to scroll.
The best site at the moment for learning Actionscript is this
site...

  • Help, advice needed for learning Action Script

I don't have any experience with programing and even scripting and I can't find tutorials for total beginners. I started to read this one
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ActionScript/3.0_ProgrammingAS3/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118a9 b8cbfe-7ff7.html
but I have difficulties understanding the explanations.
If you have any advice and pointers to tutorials for total dummy beginners I will greatly  appreciate it.

I’m 27 years old and one month ago I started study ActionScript 3.0. After red a lot of forums with recommendations about what need to do for study as3 I clear next things:
Try to visit forums about as3 and discus with people about your problems and also try to help other solve their problems (you can help a lot of people to solve their problems, you can find a lot answers to your questions, you can share your experience with others)
Try to read books about as3 (in books you can find all theory and some examples for this theory, so this info will be very helpful for you, because it’s a fundamental knowledge what you must to know)
Try to visit sites with tutorials (on the net you can find a lot sites with tutorials and there you step by step will study a lot of things)
Share your knowledge with others (create your blog or something else where you will show to people your examples of work, where you will write about as3 and will share your experiences and knowledge, this can give you chance to consolidate your knowledge and give opportunity other people study as3)
Try to separate big not understandable problem to smaller(after you find answer to all small problems you can find answer to big problem)
And the main what you must remember then YOU MUST CODING EVERY DAY! (I think without it you never been a as3 coder.)
I can recommend next sites witch can help you to study ActionScript 3.0:

  • Action Script 3.0 fro Flash Professional CC running on Windows

    Hi everybody,
I am trying to learn Action Script 3 on Flash Professional CC. The video courses I am following are on Lynda.com and they all talk about when referencing an instance of a movie clip that typing that instance name followed by the (dot) will bring up a list of properties available for that instance. I see this in action when watching the video but when I try the properties don't appear. For example I have an movie clip of a Circle on my stage and the instance of that movie clip is named mv_Circle
When I type the line 1> mv_Circle.   there should be a list appears showing the properties but this doesn't happen so I have to try and guess at what the property might be and what its expected value might be. Example adjusting the alpha of that instance I would type
1> mv_Circle.alpha = 0.5;     but the word alpha doesn't appear in the supposed list. Am I doing something wrong or have I setting set up wrong somewhere. My OS is window 7 64bit or Win 8 64 bit. Neither computer will give me this option.
I really hope somebody can help me as this is driving me crazy. Thank you in advance.
    Dougie

Thank you so much, I have just tried this and of course you already know the answer it works.
The video course I am following doesn't mention this anywhere. Maybe I'll ditch that course in favour of some other course work.
    Thank you again

  • Flex with any ORM - Writing Model classes and action scripts redundant?

    Hi,
I am using Hibernate with Flex. I have all my model classes
as POJOs. Now if i have to access these POJOs directly from flex, I
need to write action script reference classes for all my POJO model
classes. Since mapping POJOs with action script reference classes
is so mechanical, i am wondering if there is any tool to read all
the properties from the POJO's and convert them to action script
reference classes automatically. Is there any way that this can be
    automated?
    Thanks in advance.
    Chandu.

If you use Granite Data Services, there's something called
"gas3" (I think is the name). You may be able to use it even if you
    don't use Granite.
I didn't care for learning how to use it (plus it uses
Groovy, more needless stuff to learn I guess), so I can't say how
well it works. I just wanted a simple custom ant task that
generates ActionScript classes for my Java classes. So I ended up
making my own. It's definitely not trivial but it's not that hard
if you're very good with Java and reflection.

  • Action script 3 and adding code to buttons

When I open a new doc and selct action script 3 it won't
allow me to insert code by selcting the button on the stage. It
does if I select action script 2. All my old pages update ok but if
I make new buttons it wont take the code. CAn someone tell me what
    is going on???
    Thanks a lot

If your in a bind at the moment, I would suggest not
attempting to learn AS3. The system is very different, good, but
different, the syntax structure is much more strict and most things
have been revised to use a listener/broadcaster (or event
dispatcher) model, as well as most coding being class oriented,
additionally the graphic display structure is quite different.
Now did you change your publish settings back to AS2? If so,
you should still be able to apply the above code to a button
instance. However, as Dave stated, even in AS2 the code is best
used from the timeline, to do so with the code above (which the on
handler above is meant for Object attachment) you need to write it
    like this:
    my_btn.onPress = function() {
    _root.loadMovie("graphic_arts/graphic_arts.swf");
I would also consider using a MovieClipLoader and the
loadClip method forloading swf files, as it gives you more control
over the load targeting, progress reporting, and event
    notifications.
All this said, to use a button and load a file in AS3, you
need to add an event listener to the button instance and construct
a responding function to the event, in this case the loading of a
swf file. Additionally, in AS3 the MovieClipLoader class, as well
as the loadMovie methods have been replaced by the Loader classes
and must be used to load swf files. So construct a button in AS3
you must write something like the following:

  • On-line Action script course?

Can anyone recommend an on-line Action script course?
I’m working on a project where that will require more coding then I am use to dealing with.
So I need to raise my skill set fast. I’m not sure where to receive the best time and financial investment.
It would be excellent if I could collaborate with a seasoned professional to learn more.
If you know of a site or someone on-line please let me know.
    Thank you!

Have you looked at Lynda.com?   They have a lot of excellent tutorials on Flash and everything else too.  Seems to be well worth the $$.  Otherwise learning through these forums really helps a lot!!

  • Where do I put my Action Script?

So, I created a small Flash site with no loading of external
swfs. I am strictly using the timeline using labels. I have a layer
for my main buttons (home, portfolio and timeline). I have selected
AS3 for the file and I have those buttons working fine.
I have a button for my portfolio where thumbnails will pop up
after being pressed. I want to link those thumbnails to the URL's
of the actual websites. Where do I put the action script?
I also want to have my email at the bottom of the screen so
you can click on it to email me. I am used to using AS2 whwere you
simply put the code on the button.
    Thanks,
    Gabe

Hey, so thank you for the fast reponse. I totally agree with
you on learning AS3, I don't want to go back to AS2.
I already have the code you supplied so I understand what it
is doing but my question is where do I put it in this case? I
always create an action layer as you mention. In my action layer, I
have frame 1 with my preloader code and then frame 2 with my code
for my main buttons. They call to the labels. So, when I press
portfolio for example, it goes to that label.......a shape tween
starts and my portfolio thumbs appear. I then want those thumbs to
link to the URL of those sites.
So, where do I stick your code?
Thanks again for all your help. I am NEW to AS3 and this is
    great learning.
    Thanks,
    Gabe

  • Video bookmark (videomark) using flash/action script?

    Video bookmark is called videomark.

Is there any good place, i can learn more about videomark in
    flash?.

    yeah..........
Can I have a small example on this ... so that it would be very easy for me to understand....

  • Buttons and Action script 3

I have purchased Flash CS3 and have created a small
animation. I would like the user to press the button in order for
the animation to play. With the previouse version of flash I would
drag the button onto the stage open the action script window and
    start entering the script e.g. on(release){gotoandPlay(5);}
However with the new version I cannot write scripts for the
buttons.... I am confused or am I missing something? Please help me
    out.

you're missing actionscript3. and if you don't care to learn
and use it, just use the actionscript2 publish settings and use
    actionscript2 coding in your projects.

  • Can you run Action Scripts with Adobe Photoshop Elements 8?

I have Photoshop Elements 5 and i cant find the 'Action' tab. Im considering buying Elements 8 but ONLY if i know for sure if i can use action scripts with it.
Message was edited by: Jochem van Dieten

Elements does not include Photoshop's Actions Palette function.  You can get an add on for elements that will is able to Play some Photoshop Actions in Elements. Not all Photoshop Actions actions can be played for some action use Photoshop features that are not in Elements like Photoshop Scripting. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PhotoshopElements/8.0/Win/Using/WS961FF412-5006-4364-B315-1576 62B1F7E9.html

  • Where do I find anm experienced Action Scripted fast?

    Hi,
I have a Flash presentation which needs completed. Basically,
all of the buttons need programmed and as a newbie who is running
out of time to learn, I need some help.
First, I'd like to know where you find people who can do this
    (here?)
Secondly, how long it would take to programme approx 875
buttons (many of which are repetitions (e.g home button, help
button, exit button appearing on every screen). There are
approximately 109 screens which need to be linked.
Thirdly, what would be a realistic price to expect to pay for
someone to do this? It is a non-profitmaking project for a
    voluntary organisation.
    Thanks

    Okay.
    > I now have:
    >
    > stop(); {
    > on (release)
    > this.gotoAndPlay("CS1"); // this is the correct code.
    > }
Okay, the on() event handler may not belong here. The on()
    and
onClipEvent() functions are an older (Flash 5 era) way to
    handle events in
ActionScript. They're still available in Flash 8, and they
    work just fine,
even in AS2, but these are applied *directly to* the object
    in question; as
in, you click your button to select it, then type into the
    Actions panel
while the button is selected. In such a case, no instance
    name is needed
for the button (or whatever object). The above code would
    have to be
attached to each button -- which really gets old with a large
    number of
buttons -- and the stop(); action would have ben appear
    inside the on()
    function.
Your earlier approach -- where you referenced the button's
    instance name
and assign a function to the Button.onRelease event -- is the
    recommended
best practice, and has been available since Flash MX (aka
    Flash 6). There's
nothing about your earlier code that shouldn't have worked --
    it's just you
*might* have been experiencing the Scenes-related bug I
    mentioned.
I would change your previous code as follows:
    // in a frame script ...
    stop();
    skipintro_btn.onRelease = function() {
    this._parent.gotoAndStop("frame label here");
That stops the timeline in which this ActionScript appears.
    Then it
assigns a function literal to the Button.onRelease event of
    the button
symbol whose instance name is skipintro_btn (if that object
    is actually a
movie clip, then it assigns a function literal to the
    MovieClip.onRelease
event of that instance -- funtionally the same thing). Then
    it refers to
the parent of this object, which is the timeline in which the
    object
appears, and tells that timeline to gotoAndStop() at the
    named frame label
you provide -- even if that frame label is in another scene.
    Make sense?
    > Are there any good Action Script books you could
    > recommend?
There are quite a few good ones on the market lately, but
    the last I can
think of that I enjoyed -- from a general programming
    standpoint -- is
Object-Oriented ActionScript For Flash 8 (Friends of ED), by
    Peter Elst and
    Todd Yard.
    > I'm also a bit worried about bug comment. Does it mean
    > that I will have difficulty playing this project in
    Flash Player
    > 9 as it's not written in Action Script 3.0?
You shouldn't have any problems. As long as you use the
    frame labels
approach and avoid Scene names, Flash Player 9 will run it
    the same as older
Players. Flash Player 9 is the first to feature *two* virtual
    machines for
ActionScript. One is the overhauled AS3-lovin' machine; the
    other maintains
backward compatability for AS1 and AS2.
    > If so, that's a big problem isn't it as people will need
    to
    > download older versions of Flash Player to view it - or
    > I'll need to include older version on the disc.
Right, but you don't have to worry about that. :) The Scenes
    issue is
an old one, and it is a big problem, but at least the
    workaround is easy
    (frame labels).

  • Video Gallery Action Script 3

I am creating a video gallery off of the demo action script

1st. If you haven't already, get a nice xml editor such as

free xmlpad editor for windows. Why? because it supports
    editing the
dating in 3 different ways: Source <which has syntax/tag
    hilighting ,
Grid , Table.. the grid is easiest to use and helps avoid
    deleting tags
by mistake, which is what it sounds like you did based on the
    error
message. If the above was a straight cut and paste of your
    xml file then
    you are missing
the </videos> tag that belongs between
    </video> and </flashvideogallery>
I have personally spent the last week playing with the
    example and
modifying it to have a scrollbar so that i can show more than
    36 videos,
and have edited the xml files to add more entries.

  • Receive Action Script Error #2130

My system is running Windows 8 and IE10. I have continuing problems installing and using Flash Player. I have read and reread the online procedures, checks, and solutions without much luck. Most recently after several failed attempts I was able to download the latest version of Flash Player for Windows 8 with Internet Explorer. My email account is with Outlook, which defaults to MSN.com when I sign out. When the MSN.com homepage appears I shortly receive an error message that says there is an Action Script Error #2130 and a list of affected files, including flash. I am unable to perform any other functions while this message is displayed. The message block gives me two options: Dismiss or Continue. The error message clears when I click either option, and the MSN.com homepage seems to operate normally. However, there are other issues with MSN.com which I have addressed to their support. Basically, if I click on a news headline in order to read the full article, the screen that appears is mis-formatted and unreadable. Ihave a screen capture of the error message noted above. I have tried the solutions suggested in Adobe Support, but they did not resolve the underlying issues. Please help, /hugh
I noticed a related RE: discussion on the side of my question. When I went there I followed staff instructions to another person with similar problems. When I checked my installed version, I saw that it was the latest version for my system, but also saw debug at the bottom of the page. I then proceeded to uninstall Flash Player as staff instructions said to do. After I received the message that uninstall was successful, I again checked my installled version. It was the same as before including that it was the debug version. I repeated this action several times with the same result. Don't understand what this new problem is or how to proceed from this point.

Thanks Pat - Sorry if I have been terse. This is not a good time for me as my Old Man [not my Father] is in failing health and requires a lot of care. Didn't need the added burden of two known problems in my computer system which no one seems to know the answer to. At least part of the problem with my email/MSN.com went away. At present I do not get an ActionScript Error #2130 when I sign out of my Outlook email account, which defaults to MSN.com. The other problem with MSN.com is still present, but so far I have not received any support from their techies, just several boilerplate messages.
However, you are helping with my problem with Flash Player. I discovered it when trying to find the cause for the ActionScript error. I went to Adobe Support Center and began with the several guide sheets I found there. When I did the steps to find the installed] version, which by the way are contained on several different sheets, I found the version of FP installed was not the latest version. I am aware that as I have Windows 8 and IE10 changes should come down from Microsoft, so I was surprised. I tried Update Windows but there were no updates available other than an optional update to install Bing Desktop which I have installed several times, but it remains on the list as an optional update that has not been installed. As I have thought and said many times since I upgraded to Windows 8, it should have been more thoroughly debugged before they rushed it to the retail market. But that too is not an Adobe problem.
I tried all the procedures and checks on all of the Adobe FP guide sheets I found on their support center website several times before to my surprise when I redid the steps to find the currently installed version the lastest version of FP: FP 11.7.700.169 was shown as the installed version. This was over a week ago and after I found Guide Sheet: Adobe Flash Player Support Center/Downloads at: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html. In addition to providing a path to download the latest version of FP, it provides a list of critical updates and downloads to correct known problems in Flash Player. I downloaded every update I found that seemed to apply to my system.
I then checked to see if the Flash Player Action Script error message was now cleared. To my dismay it was not. Ever since I have been trying to correct that problem. It was not until after I posted this question here and you started to respond and discovered that although the latest version of FP is now installed - it is the DEBUG version, which you have told me I must uninstall and then install the standard version. That is where I learned that even though I am able to download the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller and run it and get a message that the uninstall was successful, when I check using the Find Version procedure, I am told the latest version of FP is still installed and it is the DEBUG version.
I have tried reinstalling the latest version, but this procedure does not work either. When I click to download Flash Player all I get is a blank Adobe box on the screen. It asks me to select a region. I select the US, There is a DOWNLOAD tab at the top which I also select. Then nothing happens. This tell me something is not working properly with this procedure.
So I am stuck at a point where Adobe Find Version procedures tells me the latest DEBUG version of Flash Player for my system, FP11.7.700.169, is installed in my system and working properly, but I am told I must uninstall the DEBUG version and install the standard version of FP. However, the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller does not work on my system and the Adobe Flash Player Installer does not work on my system.
On the other hand as far as I have been able to determine Flash player is working properly as I am able to view videos on various websites, including MSN.com. And after deleting several Flash Player files I searched and found, the FP ActionScript Error #2130 has apparently stopping showing up when I am defaulted to MSN.com when I sign out of OUTlook email. I am so confused, irritated, and frustrated. I agree someone from Adobe Support should take a look at what I am reporting and determine if I have an Adobe Flash Player problem, and if so, FIX IT!
Thanks again for taking the lead Pat, /hugh

  • New to flash / action script 3

    hi guys,
got sick of playing flash games and want to learn to create.
i downloaded a gif of sub zero from mortal kombat...the gif has all the frames for each action like jumping / punching etc.
i have imported it into flash and i have organised the key frames so when i press enter it looks pretty smooth.
will i be able to control it like this with keyboard using action script? or do i have to convert it to a vector graphic?
or is this just not possible.
can anybody please recommend me a good flash/as3 book to read please...i know there are lots...
    thanks
    jonininireland

imm for an easy gif control try to import it as a movie clip , Gif images must be framed inside your - character Movie clip -
try to learn about cross images technique for animating chracters.
of course u'll be able to control game by keyboard ha ! .

  • Action script 2 not working

New to Flash CS4, but could do basic button stuff like this in Flash MX 2004. (Haven't been doing anything with Flash in the meantime, but now have CS4 and am determined to get back into it.)
I chose Action script 2 when starting, and in the publish settings. Made some very simple buttons and used the action script assistant but cannot figure out why they are not working. i keep going around and around and getting nowhere.
would someone please take a look and advise? I am STUCK.
    Please?
the file is too big to attach, but if anybody is willing to help, i'll share the file via my iDisk. Thanks so much.

I have a few suggestions for you -- not that you asked, but hey it is a free forum with volunteers, so you get what you get!
First if you really don't know AS2 all that well, but you want to get into coding I would suggest starting with AS3. It is the future and if you have to learn new stuff it might as well be the newest, new stuff. AS3 is the future of Actionscript and Flash. It is a little more complex in some respects, but in many others it isn't that much more difficult and it really helps if you haven't learned all kinds of "bad" ideas from how AS2 was....
Next, if you decide to stick with AS2, I would suggest learning the latest ways of doing stuff in AS2. Using the on(event) type of coding is really old and it won't serve you well if you want to advance very far with your coding. Here is a great article on the transition to the newer style and why it is a good idea:

After that, consider ditching buttons all together. They are really twitchy and strange and most people I know gave them up when movieclips could have button events attached to them.
Finally on the issue of Scenes, they are a great way for timeline animators to organize their content. And they are great when everything is just played back to back. In fact that is what happens to scenes, when you publish the timelines are strung together in sequence and then the "scenes" are deleted. The whole thing becomes just one big long timeline. The problems come in when you start using code to move the playhead around. The documentation seems pretty straight forward and it should work, but there are just several little tricky things where it doesn't work. Sounds can cause problems too. So if you plan to use code I always recommend that you use movieclips to organize your "scenes" and not the actual scenes....
