Learning curve / path from Go Live! to Dreamweaver; is it worth it?

I'll be blunt, it's not worth "learning Dreamweaver" at all, if you don't understand html, css and basic javascripting prior to opening the program.
Without those three things, DW becomes a monstrous time sink that allows you to produce rudimentary websites that your viewers and peers will scoff at.
Now, if you do understand HTML and CSS (and to a lesser extent, javascript) running the DW tutorials from the Adobe site (hit F1 while in DW to open the Help site) will help you get up and running in no time and you'll be able to create some fairly advanced sites relatively quickly with current internet standards-compliant code.
If you don't understand code and refuse to educate yourself, as Ben says, Muse would be the way to go.

  • Pro Tools to Logic Pro Learning Curve?

I currently use Pro Tools LE 8.0.1 with the original MBox but am about to upgrade my interface and know I have many options.  I've been told that I'd get more bang for the buck by getting whichever interface I want and going with Logic Pro instead of PT.  From a financial standpoint, that makes sense, since I've seen PT 10 selling for something like $500 or $600.  For those of you who've gone from PT to Logic, was it a huge learning curve?  Do you prefer it?  I do voiceover and simple songwriting "scratch" demos, and that's all - no finals for music and only occasionally, for voiceover.  I honestly don't need anything with a million bells and whistles, but want more than Garage Band.  What's your take on this?
    Thanks,
    Annie

The thing that I advise you is to approach to Logic with the "logic of Logic".
Do not make the mistake of trying to do the same things you did on ProTools at the same way you do on ProTools.
Logic is a bomb, deserves to be interpreted in the right way. Once done, you never go back.
    Learning curve depend from this.

  • Dreamweaver & Flash Learning Curve

    Hello!
OK Firstly sorry for the long posting!. I am learning CS3 Flash + Dream weaver, a experienced Illustrator and Photoshop user. In the process of creating a web site, and I would really appreciate a heads-up with any top tips or suggestions to help my learning curve!.
    DESIGN DESCRIPTION
Screen Format 720px (L) 650px (W) Is this OK or should I consider a different dimension?
    Site Frame Structure
The rectangle format will be 75% from the top edge to two-thirds
down featuring changing flash background elements and text in dream weaver
related to clicked buttons. The remaining 25% will be the navigation area with a static background graphic constant through out the site with animated flash buttons that
I would like to change to help navigate the user through the 75% featured area.
Hope that kind of makes sense?
Based on that I can now try explain what I would like to achieve
Blank screen with a symbol to click to enter the web site.
75% area is seen as a flash animation and plays once completely.
Playing a few frames continuously until a button is clicked
25% navigation area appears after the animation has played once
revealing buttons and one button glowing to navigate the user.
On clicking the button the 75% area is replaced with a slide in motion
Graphic occupying the complete background 75% space. The idea is
to appear as if you are moving forward from the left screen format edge
to the right edge. Across all five buttons the same slide in motion
will occur with a different background graphic. Across all 5 navigated
areas I would like to feature copy in Dream weaver (rather than as part of
the animated file) My design is currently using Helvetica Regular
14 point and leading 24 point. How can I create text in Dreamweaver
with the design. Or should I place type in my flash file?
Are there any templates I could use to achieve this effect?
Any top tips creating a site like this from scratch?

  • Is there a big learning curve from Elements 10 to Lightroom

Is there a big learning curve from Elements 10 to Lightroom

In a few words, yes and no. To get your comfort zone under the hoods of Photoshop Elements and Lightroom, all you have to do is to play with Lightroom... and discover your comfort zone with it.
Please note that there were some times that you can't "edit" in Lightroom like what you do in Photoshop Element (or more powerful photo editing app such as Photoshop CC), Lightroom allows you to send the file over to Photoshop Element to do specific edit, then send it back to Lightroom.
Lightroom is more of database program, not that we see all kind of crunching numbers or any kind of database functions before our eyes... it is inside the program. Don't worry too much about database thing. Nothing.
Perhaps it might be something that you are not getting used to, but there are some pretty good tutorials on how to get most out of Lightroom through Lynda dot com website or Adobe TV videos on Lightroom.
Hope that helps. Also, there is a PDF helper inside Lightroom.
    Good luck!

  • Learning Curve for Rules - coming from HFM 9.3.3 to 11.1.2 Cal Mgr

We are currently are on 9.3.3 for HFM, Planning, and Essbase and contemplating an upgrade to 11.1.2.2. In the documents for 11.1.2.2, I read that we will have to migrate to calc manager for the rules. We are currently on the classic versions for each application rather than EPMA.
Whats the learning curve for moving to calc manager? Are people taking a class on it or picking up on their own?

    Hi all,
I just completed an installation of 11.1.2.2 and I am testing various applications in order to assess the situation and propose to my clients.
Calculation manager is not the only way to maintain your rule file. As I have seen Oracle has discuntinued the Rule Editor but you can use any notepad to edit your rules (Notepad ++ for example) and load the rule file Workspace.
I am not really impressed from calculation manager yet. Definately in one of the following versions we will have to migrate all the rule files but I do not believe that we can do that in this version. For example in my files there is a huge issue of displaying the variables....

  • HowTo? learn about converting from Audition 1.0 scripts to "Effects Rack" + Batch?

Rusty with CoolEdit / Audtion 1.0. Newbie with CS6 trial.
I've got a lot of human speech tracks to clean up. Previously, I used the scripting capability of Audition 1.0 with the following "chain of effects":
Convert to mono + 22050 hz
    Normalize to 90%
    ClickFix plug-in
    Noise reduction
    Truncate long silences
Amplitude + Dynamics processing to "Level"
    Re-normalize to 90%
Add 2 sec of silence at end
    Output as 24kbps / 22050 .mp3
My understanding is that Audition CS6 stopped supporting "scripts" several versions back. Bummer. My speculation is that the equivalent can be accomplished with the "Effects Rack" + "Batch Process". Or not?
I'd appreciate a link to a tutorial or article that discusses "best practices" to accomplish the equivalent of "Scripts".

Hmmmm ... it may be that my best "path forward" is to continue with AA1 --> AA3 free upgrade. I really, really like being able to use some fairly elaborate scripts to accomplish "chain of effects" on hundreds of human speech files.
However, I am really interested in "Adaptive Noise Reduction". Apparently it samples the first 2 to 5+ seconds of the track, and builds an on-the-fly.fft NR profile for that specific track. So far, for me it sometimes works, and sometimes fails so that the result sounds worse than the noisy original. Bummer. Could be newbie PEBKAC as I wrestle with the learning curve.
WIthin the CS6 trial, I may attempt a "hold your nose workaround" combining AA3 scripting for about 100+ human speech files :
    Convert to mono 22050 .wav's
    Normalize
    ClickFix
Then "hand off" the batch to CS6-trial for
    Dehummer
Adaptive NR (if I can get it to work well consistently)
    Truncate long silenses
    Dynamic leveling / comprand
Re-normalize (which doesn't seem to be available as an effect)
    Add silence (if available)
    Output as 24kbps .mp3
Or it may be that CS6 batch/scripting means I'd have to "hand off" .wav results from CS6 back to AA3. Seems pretty lame.

Don't learn 'dreamweaver'. Learn HTML and CSS. THEN
    Dreamweaver will make
    sense intuitively.
    > DESIGN DESCRPTION
    > Screen Format 720px (L) 650px (W) Is this OK or should I
    consider a
    > different
    > dimension?
Screens come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. As do web
    browsers. If you
must pick a specific width, 720px is fine. Don't worry about
    height. People
    can scroll just fine.

Unless this is entirely a flash web site, avoid flash-based
    navigation. It's
less accessible, less Google friendly, and much more work to
    maintain.

Why start with a blank screen? Just let them get to the home

At this point, it really seems like you are making a Flash
    presentation
moreso than an HTML web site. As such, you might have better
    luck asking
these questions in the Flash newsgroup.
    > Search Engine Friendly
Basic rule of thumb: The more flash you use, the less
    search-engine-friendly
your site will be. You CAN make Flash search-engine-friendly,
    but it takes
    work and knowledge.
    > If I call my site CHOCOLATE, rather than my not very

If you use the term 'choclate' then people searching for
    'chocolate' would
be more likely to find you than if you didn't use that term.
    That said,
'chocolate' is a pretty generic term. As is 'xxx'
    > Can I paste Keywords in the background as blind text to
    impact on my

That will likely hurt your search results. Google considers
    that a form of
    spamming.

  • Learning Curve and Possibilities

    Hi all,
I just received a question from one of my clients. As a filmer and video-editor I do videoproductions all the time but this time the client wants something special. An educational program to check if his workers understand a certain process.
    He wants his users to:
    View a film
Answer a MultipleChoice Question regarding that film (Answer A, B, C order at random generated)
    Continue to the next film
    x10 or x20
    View the results
Email or print the results to my client
All on a template that fits to his Corperate Identity and includes their logo's.
I have several questions, beware, I am a compleet noob at this. My expirience stops at PremierePro, Afteraffects, Photoshop, 3dmax and a bit of Dreamweaver. I have worked with Macromedia Director in the past but that is many years ago. I want to try out Captivate or Authorware but need to know what I am getting myself into. Understand that I have yet to buy and install the software.
Should I use Captivate or Authorware for such a project?
Is there any other software needed?
Can I create PC content with a Mac version?
What kind of videofiles should I create?
    What is the learning curve?

    Hi there
I'll take a stab at it.
Should I use Captivate or Authorware for such a project?
I have heard Authorware provides a greater degree of control, but Captivate supposedly supplants it. Unsure of future viability.
Is there any other software needed?
I could see only Captivate being needed.
Can I create PC content with a Mac version?
Unless you take special steps, the output should be viewable on PC OR Mac.
What kind of videofiles should I create?
For working with Captivate? I believe it likes FLV best.
    What is the learning curve?
I call Captivate "Deceptively Simple". It's pretty simple to learn and use. Only after you begin adding and mixing elements and those elements begin interacting with one another does the complexity creep in.
How much work/time does it take to create above product (apart from creating the films)?
The estimates will be all over the board. The answer is to ask "How long is a piece of string?". Some folks will claim 500 to 1 ratios. Others will claim 300 to 1. I've never seen an accurate "one size fits all" or even "one size fits most".
Is there somebody who'd like to guide me?
What are you looking for? Quick "ramp up" class? One on one hand holding?
Any things I should be aware of?
Captivate and video is somewhat of a witches brew. (Shamelessly stolen from another instructor) By saying that I mean there aren't many hard and fast rules. You are left to much experimentation, trial and error to arrive at what you will be happy with.

Agreed with Steve. Even a few years ago when Authorware was still viable, I'd probably suggest something else if this would be delivered over the web (if 'local' then, sure, Authorware would have been perfect).
Captivate could do this, or Powerpoint with the addition of Articulate Presenter or Adobe Presenter would also be a suitable, not-terribly expensive, tool.

  • External hard drive -- old file path from a previous laptop is still where to find my songs,  how do I change?

My iTunes library is a mess, it is stored on an external hard drive.  My old laptop died unexpectedly and I didn't have a problem resetting the file path for the library on my new laptop.  The other day my son was trying to update his iPod when I wasn't home and I don't know what he did.... GRRRR  Any songs I purchased on my old laptop are now not able to be found.  When I click on 'get info' on a song it shows the old file path from the old laptop.  Songs that I purchased since the new laptop are still playable and great.  I know my songs are still there but I can't seem to get the file path to reset on the old music.  HELP!!! PLEASE

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or an external drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Bought my first Mac and am curious about the learning curve for FCE HD

After 30+ years in the DOS/Windows/PC world, I've ordered my first Mac -- a Mac Pro -- with Final Cut Express HD.
I was wondering if other switchers could give me an idea of the kind of learning curve I'm looking at. I have used Sony Vegas Video almost exclusively for the past 5-6 years.
    Thanks!

I have no experience with Vegas so don't know what the similarities and differences will be.
People like Tom Wolsky (the main contributor to this forum) will be able to advise you on that.
I came from Premiere 6.5 and found the transition reasonably quick and pain-free.
I would suggest that you get an editing workshop book. Tom has written several but of course you will need FCE 3.5.
He guides you easily step by step from the complete basics (connecting the camera etc.) to a high level of editing skill.

  • Learning curve for a non techie-Business Catalyst. Two specific questions.

    Hello everyone,
Thanks for reading. I am a non techie who is looking at website development as a secondary skill.ie. having the know how to atleast relay my ideas to web developers and ideally to be able to tweak and in the end able to create my own websites.
In this regard, I feel Business Catalyst is an excellent tool, for people like me which mitiagtes the knowledge of coding to an certain extent. I am currently going through some of the content listed in the forums. Is there a book that provides end to end detailed steps of all the implementation to complete a fully functioning website and how much is the learning curve in this regard?
    Also,
Business Catalyst offers all in one features, is it possible to use 3rd party in place of default tools for specific function, say use wordpress for blog and a different email marketing service?
    Have a good one.
    Thanks
    Satish

I personally would tend to prefer wordpress for a small non-commercial website/blog. Its ecosystem of plugins is far more diverse than BCs and you get direct access to the code if you want. BC's blog and forum modules seem somewhat like afterthoughts designed by marketers for marketing, and there's some unevenness to the way they implement what HTML and templates you have access to and what you don't in different context, so to a degree wordpress gives you more fine-grain control over a site.
The transverse of this is that with open source software you don't necessarily have the quality control or guarantee of long-term maintenance that you might with BC. Business Catalyst is far more initially optimized for business (obviously) and its servers can likely experience a higher load and greater uptime than you might get on a typical hosting service with wordpress.
Wordpress is kind of notorious for being hackable, mostly because of its ubiquity, although if you work on it it can be secured to a reasonable degree I think -- I'm not aware of any security issues regarding Business Catalyst, apart from recent issues with the captcha and spam which might have been resolved with Akismet and Recaptcha (both of which you can also get on Wordpress obviously) but personally I don't like having all of my accounts linked with a single Adobe username/password.
But then again, I have to trust that Adobe has their **** together and there isn't some festering zero-day sitting at the heart of all of it because the price you pay for playing in BC's sandbox is just that -- it's their sandbox. They're not releasing the code. If you can't change it with an existing module setting or can't hack around with with javascript then complaining until they fix it's your only option.
In short, I think it depends on your needs. Neither is entirely the wrong answer, and both have their issues. I've been just as frustrated with some of the rendering bugs and limitations in BC as I have with the way Wordpress (IMHO) overdoes abstraction while simultaneously sticking with its horrendous code-and-content mixing template style. If you have inventory and need to push stock and don't really care about mucking around with server-side code or anything really complex than BC will probably work for you, and of course there are always sites like bcgurus and these forums to help out with edge cases.
