Learning curve

General information:
I am working through the devnet tutorials for the basic
set-up of an ASP environment and developing a web application. I
keep getting the error message "An error occurred on the server
when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator"
in Live Data View or using the web browser. I do have Friendly
error msg turned off. It seems like I have tried everything,
including the Total Training videos, which had the most
information, or the greatest number of things to check. I created
the timetest.asp document and that works. When I create the
recordset and click test, that works. I have checked file names,
deleted my connection and re-created it. Resent the documents to
the testing server.
I'm using DW CS3 and Windows Vista Business and MS Access
2007. Most of the supporting files seem to be geared to Windows XP,
but I think I have gotten to the right location when needed. IIS
works, and setting up the DSN connection seems simple, but then
I've tried it many times by now.
Specific questions:
I only need one connection (once it works) for all the
documents on my site, because they are all using the same database,
right? I keep getting stuck with the CafeTownsend view.asp, but I
read ahead and it looks like you select the connection when working
with the next sample document, send.asp. It shouldn't matter if the
document is ASP Javascript or VBScript, should it? And can anyone
please help me sort out my connection problem?
Thanks, Lisa at the end of my rope.

That's a good sign - so, what is the error you are getting
again, please?

  • Dreamweaver & Flash Learning Curve

    Hello!
OK Firstly sorry for the long posting!. I am learning CS3 Flash + Dream weaver, a experienced Illustrator and Photoshop user. In the process of creating a web site, and I would really appreciate a heads-up with any top tips or suggestions to help my learning curve!.
    DESIGN DESCRIPTION
Screen Format 720px (L) 650px (W) Is this OK or should I consider a different dimension?
    Site Frame Structure
The rectangle format will be 75% from the top edge to two-thirds
down featuring changing flash background elements and text in dream weaver
related to clicked buttons. The remaining 25% will be the navigation area with a static background graphic constant through out the site with animated flash buttons that
I would like to change to help navigate the user through the 75% featured area.
Hope that kind of makes sense?
Based on that I can now try explain what I would like to achieve
Blank screen with a symbol to click to enter the web site.
75% area is seen as a flash animation and plays once completely.
Playing a few frames continuously until a button is clicked
25% navigation area appears after the animation has played once
revealing buttons and one button glowing to navigate the user.
On clicking the button the 75% area is replaced with a slide in motion
Graphic occupying the complete background 75% space. The idea is
to appear as if you are moving forward from the left screen format edge
to the right edge. Across all five buttons the same slide in motion
will occur with a different background graphic. Across all 5 navigated
areas I would like to feature copy in Dream weaver (rather than as part of
the animated file) My design is currently using Helvetica Regular
14 point and leading 24 point. How can I create text in Dreamweaver
with the design. Or should I place type in my flash file?
Are there any templates I could use to achieve this effect?
Any top tips creating a site like this from scratch?
My design layout is currently in Illustrator and Photoshop CS3
So looking to utilize CS3; new compatible program features.
Flash Animation Question?. I would like to create a blink effect
Revealing an image. For instance the word CHOCOLATE
Appears and vanishes with a blinking motion. Any suggestions?
    Search Engine Friendly
The reason for using text in Dreamweaver was to try and achieve
Optimum search results. Ideally this is the way I would like to go
And would appreciate help with my limited knowledge.
If I call my site CHOCOLATE, rather than my not very well know name
Will this have a greater search engine impact?. My domain name is (XXX CHOCOLATE)
Can I paste Keywords in the background as blind text to impact on my
    Search results?
Any top tips in naming files, can I save image files as key word names
For instance.. CHOCOLATE LOVE BELGIUM CHOCOLATE etc
Once again really appreciate any help to aid the learning curve!

A lot of tutorials are currently on youtube.com
I've found this link to be very helpful.

  • Bought my first Mac and am curious about the learning curve for FCE HD

After 30+ years in the DOS/Windows/PC world, I've ordered my first Mac -- a Mac Pro -- with Final Cut Express HD.
I was wondering if other switchers could give me an idea of the kind of learning curve I'm looking at. I have used Sony Vegas Video almost exclusively for the past 5-6 years.
    Thanks!

I have no experience with Vegas so don't know what the similarities and differences will be.
People like Tom Wolsky (the main contributor to this forum) will be able to advise you on that.
I came from Premiere 6.5 and found the transition reasonably quick and pain-free.
I would suggest that you get an editing workshop book. Tom has written several but of course you will need FCE 3.5.
He guides you easily step by step from the complete basics (connecting the camera etc.) to a high level of editing skill.

While you are there, take a look at the rest of his site, which has a useful FAQ etc.

  • Learning curve for a non techie-Business Catalyst. Two specific questions.

    Hello everyone,
Thanks for reading. I am a non techie who is looking at website development as a secondary skill.ie. having the know how to atleast relay my ideas to web developers and ideally to be able to tweak and in the end able to create my own websites.
In this regard, I feel Business Catalyst is an excellent tool, for people like me which mitiagtes the knowledge of coding to an certain extent. I am currently going through some of the content listed in the forums. Is there a book that provides end to end detailed steps of all the implementation to complete a fully functioning website and how much is the learning curve in this regard?
    Also,
Business Catalyst offers all in one features, is it possible to use 3rd party in place of default tools for specific function, say use wordpress for blog and a different email marketing service?
    Have a good one.
    Thanks
    Satish

I personally would tend to prefer wordpress for a small non-commercial website/blog. Its ecosystem of plugins is far more diverse than BCs and you get direct access to the code if you want. BC's blog and forum modules seem somewhat like afterthoughts designed by marketers for marketing, and there's some unevenness to the way they implement what HTML and templates you have access to and what you don't in different context, so to a degree wordpress gives you more fine-grain control over a site.
The transverse of this is that with open source software you don't necessarily have the quality control or guarantee of long-term maintenance that you might with BC. Business Catalyst is far more initially optimized for business (obviously) and its servers can likely experience a higher load and greater uptime than you might get on a typical hosting service with wordpress.
Wordpress is kind of notorious for being hackable, mostly because of its ubiquity, although if you work on it it can be secured to a reasonable degree I think -- I'm not aware of any security issues regarding Business Catalyst, apart from recent issues with the captcha and spam which might have been resolved with Akismet and Recaptcha (both of which you can also get on Wordpress obviously) but personally I don't like having all of my accounts linked with a single Adobe username/password.
But then again, I have to trust that Adobe has their **** together and there isn't some festering zero-day sitting at the heart of all of it because the price you pay for playing in BC's sandbox is just that -- it's their sandbox. They're not releasing the code. If you can't change it with an existing module setting or can't hack around with with javascript then complaining until they fix it's your only option.
In short, I think it depends on your needs. Neither is entirely the wrong answer, and both have their issues. I've been just as frustrated with some of the rendering bugs and limitations in BC as I have with the way Wordpress (IMHO) overdoes abstraction while simultaneously sticking with its horrendous code-and-content mixing template style. If you have inventory and need to push stock and don't really care about mucking around with server-side code or anything really complex than BC will probably work for you, and of course there are always sites like bcgurus and these forums to help out with edge cases.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Apple offered a refund for users who purchased Logic Pro 9 30 days or less before the Logic Pro X launch, but they don't do it anymore, so if you want to upgrade to Logic Pro X, you have to purchase it in the Mac App Store
    Part of this is incorrect...
Some App Store employee's "accidentally" (but in good faith) issued refunds to a few users who had purchased Logic 9 within 30 days prior to the mid-July release of Logic-X. Word quickly came down from Apple HQ that this was against App Store policy and the practice was immediately stopped.
To the original poster.. you never stood a chance, even if they were issuing refunds you didn't fall within the 30 day period.  There were many who purchased Logic 9 a few days before the LX release who did not get a refund.

  • How steep is the learning curve for InDesign?

    5-1
I am a book author and previous works are out of print. I have scanned and digitized the books but need to revise and re-print several that are filled with color photos, using on-dermand technology. SOem of these books will also be pub;ished as e-books with embedded features like videos. Is it silly for me to try to learn how to lay out and prepare for printing a 200+ page book, or is the learning curve so steep that I am better off hiring an agency to do this work? I have never used Pagemaker so this is a whole new experience for me. Need advice PLEASE!  THANKS to all - Joel

Do you enjoy solving puzzles (page layout is often about fitting too much stuff into too little space, and making it look good), are you a little geeky (InDesign is a very complex piece of software, and you need to understand the technical stuff as much as the artisitic to be really successful) and do you have experience working with images (you mentioned a lot of photos)? Would you consider the challenge of learning the software fun or a pain?
Any reasonbly bright person (and I hve no reason to think you aren't at the very least reasonably bright) can learn to use InDesign, but if you are doing so only because you think you "have to" you'd probably be better off hiring a pro. On the other hand, if you like a challenge and want to put a few weeks or even months into learning what you need to know, then go for it. Aside from books, you'll find some free tutorials on the web, good, but not free, tutorials at lynda.com, possibly some good classes at your local community college or adult education, and plenty of free advice right here when you get to the point where you have more complex questions.
I used to teach InDesign at my local community college. We offered regular semester-long courses which were worthwhile and some six-hour classes that were a joke. I teach the production staff of the student newspaper what they need to know to produce that particular project in an afternoon, but they don't get fluent for a few weeks, and they'd mostly be lost, even after a semester, if asked to branch out to something new like a book.
You mention your books will get distibution in electronic format instead of or in addition to print, and that's an additional layer of complexity to learn (and you really need to understand the requirements and the limitations for producing electronic publications, in my opinion, before starting your project if you want everything to go smoothly). I think the question isn't so much how steep is the curve, but will you enjoy the climb, or do you just want to get to the top as quickly as possible. If you're not sure, download the trial (Ok, folks, I know one of you bookmarked where the CS5 trials are hidden for the next couple of weeks) and take it for a spin so you have a better idea waht you're in for before you shell out the big bucks.

  • PureMVC, and the learning curve. Please share your thougths

    Hello Everyone,
So I have decided to get my head wrapped around the PUREMVC framework. It has been a week and yes some of it makes sense yet I still struggle with it. I would like to know if anyone else share the same sentiments as I do. I have been able to find couple online tutorial on it, but this one makes more sense than others:
    http://hubflanger.com/building-a-flash-site-using-puremvc/
What advice can you pass with regard to overcoming the learning curve. The more I try absorbing it, the more frustrated I get.
    Thanks a lot.

i've used the mvc design pattern (not puremvc) in projects and i'm learning to code for the iphone (which uses the mvc design pattern) and i still find it adds more hurdles than than it overcomes.
so, i wouldn't feel badly about struggling with that particular implementation of mvc.   and like everything, the more you work on something more you'll understand.  but the benefits of using a design pattern come in the future (maybe).  not while you're working on a project (unless it's collaborative).

Don't learn 'dreamweaver'. Learn HTML and CSS. THEN
    Dreamweaver will make
    sense intuitively.
    > DESIGN DESCRPTION
    > Screen Format 720px (L) 650px (W) Is this OK or should I

    > dimension?
Screens come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. As do web
    browsers. If you
must pick a specific width, 720px is fine. Don't worry about
    height. People
    can scroll just fine.
    > Site Frame Structure
If my frame you mean HTML Framesets, rethink that. Frames are
    usually a bad
    idea.
    > buttons that

Unless this is entirely a flash web site, avoid flash-based
    navigation. It's
less accessible, less Google friendly, and much more work to
    maintain.
    > Blank screen with a symbol to click to enter the
    website.
Why start with a blank screen? Just let them get to the home
    page to begin
    with.
    > On clicking the button the 75% area is replaced with a
    slide in motion
    > Graphic occupying the complete background 75% space. The

    > to appear as if you are moving forward from the left

At this point, it really seems like you are making a Flash
    presentation
moreso than an HTML web site. As such, you might have better
    luck asking
these questions in the Flash newsgroup.
    > Search Engine Friendly
Basic rule of thumb: The more flash you use, the less
    search-engine-friendly
your site will be. You CAN make Flash search-engine-friendly,
    but it takes
    work and knowledge.
    > If I call my site CHOCOLATE, rather than my not very
    well know name
    > Will this have a greater search engine impact?. My
    domain name is (XXX
    > CHOCOLATE)
If you use the term 'choclate' then people searching for
    'chocolate' would
be more likely to find you than if you didn't use that term.
    That said,
'chocolate' is a pretty generic term. As is 'xxx'
    > Can I paste Keywords in the background as blind text to
    impact on my
    > Search results?
That will likely hurt your search results. Google considers
    that a form of
    spamming.

  • Learning curve / path from Go Live! to Dreamweaver; is it worth it?

Learning curve / path from Go Live! to Dreamweaver; is it worth it?

I'll be blunt, it's not worth "learning Dreamweaver" at all, if you don't understand html, css and basic javascripting prior to opening the program.
Without those three things, DW becomes a monstrous time sink that allows you to produce rudimentary websites that your viewers and peers will scoff at.
Now, if you do understand HTML and CSS (and to a lesser extent, javascript) running the DW tutorials from the Adobe site (hit F1 while in DW to open the Help site) will help you get up and running in no time and you'll be able to create some fairly advanced sites relatively quickly with current internet standards-compliant code.
If you don't understand code and refuse to educate yourself, as Ben says, Muse would be the way to go.

  • Pro Tools to Logic Pro Learning Curve?

I currently use Pro Tools LE 8.0.1 with the original MBox but am about to upgrade my interface and know I have many options.  I've been told that I'd get more bang for the buck by getting whichever interface I want and going with Logic Pro instead of PT.  From a financial standpoint, that makes sense, since I've seen PT 10 selling for something like $500 or $600.  For those of you who've gone from PT to Logic, was it a huge learning curve?  Do you prefer it?  I do voiceover and simple songwriting "scratch" demos, and that's all - no finals for music and only occasionally, for voiceover.  I honestly don't need anything with a million bells and whistles, but want more than Garage Band.  What's your take on this?
    Thanks,
    Annie

The thing that I advise you is to approach to Logic with the "logic of Logic".
Do not make the mistake of trying to do the same things you did on ProTools at the same way you do on ProTools.
Logic is a bomb, deserves to be interpreted in the right way. Once done, you never go back.
    Learning curve depend from this.

  • Is there a big learning curve from Elements 10 to Lightroom

Is there a big learning curve from Elements 10 to Lightroom

In a few words, yes and no. To get your comfort zone under the hoods of Photoshop Elements and Lightroom, all you have to do is to play with Lightroom... and discover your comfort zone with it.
Please note that there were some times that you can't "edit" in Lightroom like what you do in Photoshop Element (or more powerful photo editing app such as Photoshop CC), Lightroom allows you to send the file over to Photoshop Element to do specific edit, then send it back to Lightroom.
Lightroom is more of database program, not that we see all kind of crunching numbers or any kind of database functions before our eyes... it is inside the program. Don't worry too much about database thing. Nothing.
Perhaps it might be something that you are not getting used to, but there are some pretty good tutorials on how to get most out of Lightroom through Lynda dot com website or Adobe TV videos on Lightroom.
Hope that helps. Also, there is a PDF helper inside Lightroom.
    Good luck!

  • Learning Curve and Possibilities

    Hi all,
I just received a question from one of my clients. As a filmer and video-editor I do videoproductions all the time but this time the client wants something special. An educational program to check if his workers understand a certain process.
    He wants his users to:
    View a film
Answer a MultipleChoice Question regarding that film (Answer A, B, C order at random generated)
    Continue to the next film
    x10 or x20
    View the results
Email or print the results to my client
All on a template that fits to his Corperate Identity and includes their logo's.
I have several questions, beware, I am a compleet noob at this. My expirience stops at PremierePro, Afteraffects, Photoshop, 3dmax and a bit of Dreamweaver. I have worked with Macromedia Director in the past but that is many years ago. I want to try out Captivate or Authorware but need to know what I am getting myself into. Understand that I have yet to buy and install the software.
Should I use Captivate or Authorware for such a project?
Is there any other software needed?
Can I create PC content with a Mac version?
What kind of videofiles should I create?
    What is the learning curve?
How much work/time does it take to create above product (apart from creating the films)?
Is there somebody who'd like to guide me?
Any things I should be aware of?
Many many thanks for your anwsers!

    Hi there
I'll take a stab at it.
Should I use Captivate or Authorware for such a project?
I have heard Authorware provides a greater degree of control, but Captivate supposedly supplants it. Unsure of future viability.
Is there any other software needed?
I could see only Captivate being needed.
Can I create PC content with a Mac version?
Unless you take special steps, the output should be viewable on PC OR Mac.
What kind of videofiles should I create?
For working with Captivate? I believe it likes FLV best.
    What is the learning curve?
I call Captivate "Deceptively Simple". It's pretty simple to learn and use. Only after you begin adding and mixing elements and those elements begin interacting with one another does the complexity creep in.
How much work/time does it take to create above product (apart from creating the films)?
The estimates will be all over the board. The answer is to ask "How long is a piece of string?". Some folks will claim 500 to 1 ratios. Others will claim 300 to 1. I've never seen an accurate "one size fits all" or even "one size fits most".
Is there somebody who'd like to guide me?
What are you looking for? Quick "ramp up" class? One on one hand holding?
Any things I should be aware of?
Captivate and video is somewhat of a witches brew. (Shamelessly stolen from another instructor) By saying that I mean there aren't many hard and fast rules. You are left to much experimentation, trial and error to arrive at what you will be happy with.
    Cheers... Rick

Agreed with Steve. Even a few years ago when Authorware was still viable, I'd probably suggest something else if this would be delivered over the web (if 'local' then, sure, Authorware would have been perfect).
Captivate could do this, or Powerpoint with the addition of Articulate Presenter or Adobe Presenter would also be a suitable, not-terribly expensive, tool.

  • Learning Curve of LE7

Please answer the following questions: I greatly appreciate any and all opinions.
    1. Are GB3 songs easily, without loss of data, nondestructively no matter what the track has on it in GB, compatible and launched into LE7 and sound as if they were being played in GB? are there any quirks in the transition of loading GB songs into LE7?
2.Can you tell me if the quality of software instruments of LE7 is so much better than those in GB?
3.What more in terms of loops or software instruments or synthesizers built in does LE7 have that make it more musical than GB?
4.Can i modulate/alter/fool around with loops in LE7 to lets say reverse them, change their sound, add effects to them and the like without a tremendous learning curve?
5.I know this sounds rediculous but once i have the GB song in LE7 if i simply want to ameliorate some software instruments, modulate effects and the like ( im expecting more options to make the sounds more interesting and varied ) but not do too much more are we talking weeks to learn it or months?
    6. Do you know if the VIDEO training really makes the transition from GB to LOGIC EXP easier?
    7. Is there anyone who has an example of a song they did in LE7 that started out in GB3...
im greedy for answers... really time pressured and not ready for a steep learning curve.
    thanks so much

    Glenn,
Before you consider my responses, you need to know my context. I've been well into various kinds of amateur recording techniques since my high school years (70's), and some elective classes in electronic synthesis in college (on a then-state of the art ARP 2600 and TEAC 4-track RtR's). I started on Macs in 1986 and because of my longstanding interest in electronic music (both prog rock and classic electronica, ca. the 1940's and 50's) I learned basic functions of some early sequencing programs, but I never personally got into it until finally I started with GB only a year or two ago. I liked GB so much that I quickly stepped up to LE. Last fall I took a recording class at my local community college to learn more about DSP (on Pro Tools). A couple of weeks ago I finally kicked in the bucks for Logic Pro. So keep in mind that I have still a LOT to learn. That said:

I can't answer this ABSOLUTELY "no matter what" -- because your mileage may vary -- but the few GB files I moved into LE all came up in comparable instruments. If I lost any data or settings, I never noticed it (but note that my GB projects were very, VERY simple pieces). The good news is that when changes occurred, they usually sounded better to me. And the best is that Logic (even Express) gives you SCADS of ways to tweak it all, FAR beyond GB's rudimentary controls.
Simple suggestion: Keep backups of everything archived in GB format until you've worked the file up in LE. Keep them until you feel satisfied that you know for yourself what works and what doesn't in the conversion. If LE isn't working out for you, or if you don't need it, fine, stick with GB (I doubt that'll happen).

instruments of LE7 is so much better than those in
    GB?

or synthesizers built in does LE7 have that make it
    more musical than GB?
Regardless of subjective assessments, Logic lets you DO so much more with whatever you have. And beyond that, even LE comes loaded with gobs of presets that make GB look like it was Made By Mattell.
    4.Can i modulate/alter/fool around with loops in LE7
to lets say reverse them, change their sound, add
effects to them and the like without a tremendous
    learning curve?

Not ridiculous at all. Simple answer: If you're good with GB, you'll probably get the basics of LE in weeks. If you're completely fluent in GB, maybe even just a few late nights will do it — to get the basic skills (artistry costs more).
Think of the learning curve like that for learning chess. It's simple enough to learn how each piece moves, and a few strategies here and there, but the art of doing it, discovering all the options, knowing when to use what, and (maybe more importantly) when NOT to process something -- ahhh, that takes time and experimenting. But yeah, you'll get it.
For my part, on those nights when I start getting into it, the more I find of what I CAN do, the more difficult it is for me to turn off the **** iMac and go to bed.
    6. Do you know if the VIDEO training really makes the
transition from GB to LOGIC EXP easier?
Dunno. Sorry. For some $35-40, I did find Sitter's book VERY helpful.
    7. Is there anyone who has an example of a song they
did in LE7 that started out in GB3...
I've taken several of my GB pieces and punched 'em up with Logic's better EQ, more alaborate and efficient automation, etc.
    Good luck!

  • Learning Curve for Rules - coming from HFM 9.3.3 to 11.1.2 Cal Mgr

We are currently are on 9.3.3 for HFM, Planning, and Essbase and contemplating an upgrade to 11.1.2.2. In the documents for 11.1.2.2, I read that we will have to migrate to calc manager for the rules. We are currently on the classic versions for each application rather than EPMA.
Whats the learning curve for moving to calc manager? Are people taking a class on it or picking up on their own?

    Hi all,
I just completed an installation of 11.1.2.2 and I am testing various applications in order to assess the situation and propose to my clients.
Calculation manager is not the only way to maintain your rule file. As I have seen Oracle has discuntinued the Rule Editor but you can use any notepad to edit your rules (Notepad ++ for example) and load the rule file Workspace.
I am not really impressed from calculation manager yet. Definately in one of the following versions we will have to migrate all the rule files but I do not believe that we can do that in this version. For example in my files there is a huge issue of displaying the variables....
