Learning SAP SCM

Hi All,
If I want to learn SCM, where do i start? i know i can go and study at help.sap.com but what i dont understand is, which is the technical part of SCM and which is the functional part of SCM?
Having studied mechanical engineering, I've some industry exposure in my uncle's small manufacturing company before moving to IT field but not in the SAP field. I want to move to SAP field with SCM, so I would appreciate your inputs and suggestions and/or any documents on it.
Thanks,
Suchitra

Hello
I am in a similar situation as Suchitra Chawla, however, I am  an Industrial Engineer & I have been exposed to SAP in consulting projects but in a Change Management role. I now desire to invest in SAP SCM training so that I may fined a better Job in SAP with my four years experience in Change Management for SAP. I am in north America.
I'm considering one of the following courses:
SAP eAcademy  SCM - Procurement
SAP eAcademy SCM - Order Fulfillment
However I went online to see what employers are looking for in a SAP analyst/consultant and one of the adverts was as follows:
Expertise in SAP: SCM-Advanced Planner & Optimizer  (APO), SCM-APO-Demand Planning & Forecasting, SCM-APO-Supply Network Planning (SNP), SCM-Manufacturing-Production Planning (PP),  SCM-Manufacturing-Detailed Scheduling (PP-DS), SCM-Global  Available-to-Promise (GATP), SCM-Transportation Planning & Vehicle  Scheduling (TPVS), SCM-APO-Inventory Collaboration Hub (ICH),  SCM-Warehousing-Distribution, SCM-Warehousing-Multiple Handling Units,  CS-Global Trade Services (GTS), Logistics Execution (LE), LE-Shipping  (LE-S), Inventory Management (MM-IM), LE-Warehouse Management (LE-WM),  Transportation Management (LO-TR)
• Ability to meet travel requirements, when applicable
• Minimum 4 years of experience plus 1 full implementation
• Relevant degree or equivalent in professional experience
I have three questions based on the information I have given you above:
>Which of the two courses will better position me strategically for employment as an SAP analyst/consultant in Supply Chain (I known there are no grantees, I just want an opinion.. responsibility lies with me  )
>looking at the advert displayed above and using your experience in the field do think any of these two courses are accurate in terms of what is needed as SAP SCM practitioner or are they just an overview.  Should I rather pursue training in one of the skills mentioned in the advert e.g. 'LE-Warehouse Management (LE-WM)'
> Are there any other SAP SCM training that you would suggest that you consider more useful or accurate in terms what is needed in the SAP SCM field
Thanks, Hope you will be able to help.

  • Career Prospects In SAP SCM

    Hi everybody,
I am working in freight forwarding industry and having experience of more then 10 Years in various department right from documentation to sales. I have worked with shipping lines, Inland Container depot and freight forwarders. To enhance my skills and giving it a technical edge i want to do a training in SAP SCM. As I don't have any exposure to SAP except doing some documentation work on SAP based Shipping Lines.
I need your valuable suggestions on how should I go about it. Can I go for classroom learning directly or i need to have some experience with SAP based organizations prior to that.
What are the career prospects in SAP SCM.
    Regards
    Akanksha

    Hi Akanksha,
i have done my Engineering from L.N.C.T . Indore. I know indore and its market, i don't think you will get any good training at Indore, so you have to move either Bangaluru, Pune/Mumbai or at Delhi NCR.
As at Bengaluru you will get tough competition with fellow SCM employee, so not suggested.
SCM market is good but its a domain specific , as i don't know much more about SCM , so just posting some useful links, from where you can gain knowledge. SCM market is consistent as far as i know, so take a foot ahead for a new begining, you will surely get what you wants .
Here are some links, which help you in boosting your knowledge.

  • SAP SCM-APO

    Experts,
I don't know, Is it the right place to post, but I am confident about only your suggestions.
I need your valuable suggestion to learn and built my career in  SCM APO. I have been into technologies ABAP,  SAP Console, RFID, WM, and have knowledge about SCM EWM. I am very much interested to learn SAP APO,but I don't have knowledge about this module how the future will be.
    Your valuable suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance...
    Sridhar

    Hi Sridhar,
You sure have very good experience in SAP but please let me know if you have any domain experience as well in any Industry. Because WM or EWM is not going to be of any help to you in understanding the business requirements. More over the Modules that are primarily used by the clients are Demand Planning, Supply Network Planning, Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling,
Global Availability to Promise, Transport Planning and Vehicle Scheduling. These are the key modules for which there is a reuiqrement for Consultants.
So I would suggest that instead you should try for BI which has very high requirements in the Market as of now and with your Technical background picking up BI should not be an issue.
This is my personal opinion... Choice is yours
    Thanks,
    Harsh

  • Help in learning SAP BW

I am having Datawarehousing concepts and I want to learn SAP BW.
Can you please guide me how should i start my learning (reading / practice handson) ,
It will be great if you can send me study material (with screen shot).
What is the best way to practice handon? I have my own PC.How can i get SAP BW installed in it?
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi Rohith Kumar ,
To learn BW , u should know about DATA SOURCE , INFO CUBE , PSA, EXTRACT STRUCTURE , TRANSFER STRUCTURE etc.
Now my suggesstion try to learn BI ( BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ) which is advance to BW.
The following websites contain PDF & PPT docs on BI/BW which will gain u confidence in it:
What is a BW datasource? What is meant by maintaining a datasource?
A BW datasource is a structure which is created in the source system and replicated to the BW system. Maintaining a datasource in a source system is doing any changes related to the datasource. It could be adding/deleting fields or checking the flags in the datasource like the hide and selection flag. Also, if the datasource is provided in the LO Cockpit, changes can be made there too depending on how the extraction of data is ...

An InfoCube describes a self-contained dataset (from the reporting view), for example, for a business-oriented area. This dataset can be evaluated with the BEx query. An InfoCube is a set of relational tables that are created in accordance with the star schema: a large fact table in the center, with several dimension tables surrounding it.
In its esence, Infocube is a data container. Data containers are used as a basis for analysis and reporting processes in SAP BW. Infocubes in SAP BW serve exactly this purpose. Infocubes in SAP consist of Key figures and characteristics. You can find some detailed information on key figures here. Simply speaking, infocube is any repository which contains data. Moving on to the types of infocubes. In SAP BW, there are basically two classes of infocubes. These are:
Basic Infocubes - These are also called as physical infocubes.
Remote Infocubes - These are also called as virtual infocubes.
The basic difference between the above two types of infocubes is that basic infocubes are physically stored in the same SAP BW system as their meta data description. Remote infocubes are stored on a third party custom SAP BW. Both the above types of BW infocubes consist of key figures and characteristics. These characteristics in turn are divided into 16 dimensions. More on that in another post.

    Extract Structure
In the extract structure, data from a DataSource is staged in the source system. The extract structure contains the amount of fields that are offered by an extractor in the source system for the data loading process. You can edit and enhance DataSource extract structures in the source system. To do this, in the BW Administrator Workbench choose Goto à Modeling à Source Systems à Your Source System à Context Menu (right mouse click) à Customizing Extractors à Subsequent Processing of DataSources.
    Transfer Structure
The transfer structure is the structure in which the data is transported from the source system into the SAP Business Information Warehouse. It provides a selection of the extract structure fields for the source system.
    Use
The transfer structure provides BW with all the source system information available for a business process.
An InfoSource in BW requires at least one DataSource for data extraction. DataSource data that logically belongs together is staged in an extract structure in an SAP source system.
In the transfer structure maintenance, you determine which extract structure fields are transferred to the BW. When you activate the transfer rules in BW, an identical transfer structure for BW is created in the source system from the extractor structure.
This data is transferred 1:1 from the transfer structure of the source system into the BW transfer structure, and is then transferred into the BW communication structure using the transfer rules.
A transfer structure always refers to a DataSource from a source system and an InfoSource in BW.
You get to the maintenance of the transfer structure using the InfoSource tree of the Administrator Workbench. The context menu of the source system belonging to an InfoSource provides you with the maintenance marker using the function Maintain Transfer Rules.
This website gives all definitions of Info object, infocube, infosource, datasource, commn structure, extract structure ..etc..

    SAP Business Information Warehouse
SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) is the name of the Business Intelligence, analytical, reporting and Data Warehousing (DW) solution which is one of the major enterprise software applications produced by SAP AG. It was originally named SAP BIW, (Business Information Warehouse), but is now known as "SAP NetWeaver BI".
SAP BW consists among other things of components for data management (Data Warehousing Workbench), extensive data modeling capabilities, an embedded analytical engine, a suite of rich front-end analytical tools refererred to as Business Explorer (BEx), and operational tools used for importing the most current transactional data into the system. It may be helpful to consider layers that make up the structure of SAP's BI solution:
Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL) layer - responsible for extracting data from a specific source, applying transformation rules, and loading it into SAP BW system.
Data warehouse area - responsible for storing the information in various types of structures, including multidimensional structures called InfoCubes.
Reporting - responsible for accessing the information in data warehouse area and presenting it in a user-friendly manner to the analyst or business user.
Planning - Provides capabilities for the user to run simulations and perform tasks such as budget calculations.
SAP's BI application is a very pervasively employed data warehouse / analytical enterprise software solution, often utilized heavily by companies that essentially run their business on SAP operational systems such as SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (SAP ERP, traditionally known as SAP R/3). SAP's BI solution contains a large number of predefined "extractors", a very significant amount of pre-defined business content in the form of InfoCubes, master data (i.e. objects representing the entity for "Customer", or "Material"), authorization roles, query views and reports all delivered in the software by SAP. Some of the significant benefits of this approach include the ability to leverage SAP's substantial business knowledge from many years of developing extremely sophisticated software systems for the world's largest companies, typically shortening project development cycles in the process. The pre-defined business content can be modified to meet an organization's specific requirements, while at the same time taking advantage of general aspects of these delivered data models and reports that are somewhat foundational and have broad application in business, government, and education.
SAP BW is now part of a suite of SAP applications called SAP NetWeaver. Other components of SAP NetWeaver include SAP Enterprise Portal (EP, called SAP NetWeaver Portal as of Release 7.0), Web Application Server (WAS), SAP Process Integration (PI, or previously XI, i.e. eXchange Infrastructure) and Master Data Management (MDM).
The 7.0 version of SAP BW was released in June 2006 as part of the SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (aka 2004s). This new release includes many new features, such as next-generation reporting and analytical features, major data warehousing enhancements, and possibility to use innovative techology for query performance optimization called "BI Accelerator". BI Accelerator (or BIa) comes as an external applicance, i.e. complete hardware with pre-installed software. BIa requires separate licence fee.
From SAP NetWeaver 7.0 on, the term SAP BW is obsolete, and instead it is referred simply as "SAP NetWeaver BI" - i.e. "SAP NetWeaver 7.0 BI".
According to SAP, more than 12,000 installations of SAP's BI solution exist.
SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW) is SAP´s Data Warehouse solution. It has been specially developed to allow you to gather and analyze all kinds of statistical information in the best possible way.
The SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) is a core element of mySAP.com. SAP BW is an enterprise-wide information hub that enables data analysis from R/3 and other business application, including external data sources such as databases and the Internet. SAP BW also offers easy integration with other mySAP solutions, such as mySAP Supply Chain
Management (mySAP SCM), mySAP Strategic Enterprise Management (mySAP SEM), and mySAP Customer Relationship Management (mySAP CRM).
SAP BW is a comprehensive end-to-end data warehouse solution with optimized structures for reporting and analysis. To help knowledge workers quickly mine an enterpriseu2019s business data, SAP BW is equipped with preconfigured information models and reports, as well as automatic data extraction and loading methods.
With an easy-to-use Microsoft Excel-based user interface, you can create, format, and analyze reports, and publish those reports to the web. Built for high performance, SAP BW resides on its own dedicated server. Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and reporting activities are therefore separated, and system performance is not compromised.

  • I have 3.4 years of ABAP experience. Planning to learn SAP BI and Move to BI. Kindly Suggest

    Hi Experts,
I have been working for almost 3 and half years on SAP ABAP. Now i am planning to Learn SAP BI/BW and move my carrier to SAP BI/BW Completely.
What would be the opportunities and carrier growth in the coming years for this combination. Please suggest.
I have read all the previous posts which were posted a year back about the same combination. But please suggest according to the present trend.
I will definitely consider your each and every suggestion of you as a priority one to my carrier growth.
    Thanks and Regards,
    V Shankar

    HI V
if you already know it's better opportunities then it sounds like you have already answered your question
if you are not familiar with the concept of big data or HANA I recommend you enter those terms in your search engine or look at SCN Front page and start reading
as far as how to retrain and transition that will really depend on your current employment situation. What would be a great combination is a mix of ABAP with HANA. Without going into further detail I think you will gain more insight by your own research
    regards

  • SAP SCM 5.10 with F&R - Update SAP Netweaver 7.0 to 7.0 EHP2 (702)

    Hello Experts,
almost all of our SAP-System has now SAP Netweaver 7.0 EHP2 (702) Abap-Stack.
The last system that we will update is a "SAP SCM 5.10" with the F&R component. The mean software level is:
    SAP Basis               700 SP23
    SCM SCEMSRV      5.1 SP16
    SCM                        5.1 SP15
    FRP-Kernel                   SP15
To update the SAP-Neatweaver componet to EHP2 have we do an upgrade for the SCM-Server or the SCM itself and what will be now the target relase?
In the documentation is this not realy clear for us.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,
    finally for NW 7.0 EHP2 you need to upgrade F&R to F&R 5.1 on SCM 7.0 EHP1.
For details, have a look to the SAP Installation and Upgrade information.
Path: SAP Service Marketplace on http://service.sap.com/ --> SAP Support Portal --> Software Download Center --> Software Downloads --> Software Download Center --> 2nd item: Installation & Upgrades --> A - Z Index --> select letter 'F' --> SAP F&R (option: SAP Forecasting & Replenishment for Retail (for use with SAP merchandising software))
Options; SCM release + EHP; NW release + EHP
    F&R 5.1;SCM 2007 (= SCM5.1); NW 7.0
    F&R 5.1 on SCM 7.0; SCM 7.0; NW 7.0 EHP1 or NW 7.3
    F&R 5.1 on SCM 7.0; SCM 7.0 EHP1; NW 7.0 EHP2
    Kind regards,

  • Send IDoc from SAP SCM to XI

    Hi,
Can somebody give me step by step procedure to send IDoc form SAP SCM to XI. We are not using ICH. IDoc is coming to SCM through EDI. Once it is posted in SCM, we want to send it to XI. We had a option of sending directly to XI through EDI connectivity, but for some reason we want to post it in SCM and then send it to XI.
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

    hi,
sending IDOCs to XI is always the same
apart from documents section in the XI FAQ (link below)
when you can find some IDOC weblogs
you can also find lots of configuration examples for IDOC-XI scenarios in my book:

    Hi,
Sender is IDOC so no need to take any communication channel & sender agreement in ID window.
Find below link of more information on IDOC configuration

  • IDOC to XML and send it to SAP SCM SNC(Supplier network colloboration)

I am currently working in a project which I need to send the PO IDOC to PI (which is working fine) and convert it to xml and send it to SNC system which is SAP SCM system. I am not sure if this is going to be an IDOC or xml , I wasn't given more information as all of us are new to this SNC environment. Any help would highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Menaga

Following are the interface mappings in use for the Purchase Order scenario from ERP to SNC
    1. create purchase order -> display PO (ERP to SNC)
    OrdersOrders05_ReplenishmentOrderNotification_01
    2. Create or change PO -> Display updated PO (ERP to SNC)
    OrdchgOrders05_ReplenishmentOrderNotification_01
    3. Confirm PO or change in web UI (SNC to ERP)
    ReplenishmentOrderConfirmation_OrdrspOrders05_01
    4. Create or Change Purchase Order -> Receive and Display Purchase Order     (ERP to SNC)
    OrdntfOrdint01_ReplenishmentOrderNotification_01
Just configure the Integration scenario "MaintainPurchase_Order_Processing" from http://sap.com/xi/SNC/Global namespace present in SNC 5.1 SWC
    in your ID.
In SNC Scenarios Idocs will be sent and received from ERP and ABAP Proxies (Client/ Server) used at SNC side. You do not have to code for the ABAP Proxies as the proxies will already be inmplemented in your SNC system.
So 1. configure your SNC system for ABAP Proxy configuration
    2. Configure the Integration scenario "MaintainPurchase_Order_Processing" in ID
    3. Configure your ERP system for IDoc send/ receive
    You are done.
