Learning the concepts to make image adjustments?

Can anyone make some recommendations for learning how to make changes to an image's color using settings in PS or ACR such as Temperature, Tine, Exposure, Recovery, etc.
I can learn how to adjust the sliders, though how do you know what to even look for? How does someone without a photography background learn how to make an image look good?
Thanks.

here's a Russell Brown video on ACR, it's a much older version of ACR (PS7) so "recovery" is missing and the layout of ACR is also a bit different from the current version, but the concepts and workflow might be a good base.

  • Is there a substitute tool path for "Image Adjustments Variations-" in Photoshop CS6 Standard Addition?

Is there a substitute tool path for "Image>Adjustments>Variations…" in Photoshop CS6 Standard Addition that brings similar results?  I was used to using Image>Adjustments>Variations… in Photoshop CS4 Standard Standard Addition quite often. I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 Standard Addition to get the 64bit memory architecture compatibility on my Macbook Pro, booted in Mountain Lion.  I see now that Photoshop CS6 Standard Addition has the "Image>Adjustments>Variations…" tool path removed.
I don't have Photoshop CS6 Extended, which has the all new Image>Adjustments>Variations… tool path.  I only have Photoshop CS6 Standard Addition so, if anyone can share with me a substitute tool set that can give me similar results to using the old "Image>Adjustments>Variations…,"  I would appreciate it.

    Thanks, R_Kelly.
You helped me to start exploring other tools in the Image>Adjustments Menu.  "Image>Adjustments>Color Balance…" seemed to help me get the results that "Image>Adjustments>Variations…" used to deliver.  "Image>Adjustments>Photo Filter>Warming Filter (85)" also got me to where I wanted to be in desired adjustments.  I used to get the results I wanted in brightness, contrast, mid-tone adjustment, and color balance buy using just Curves, Variations, and Hue/Saturation.  Now I'll use "Color Balance…" and "Photo Filter>Warming Filter (85)" along with Curves, and Hue/Saturation.  I also have learned to use "Levels" some more to get the same effect as Adjustments>Variations…"  I always thought there were more technically precise adjustment tools to get the same effect as "Image>Adjustments>Variations…"  Adobe dropping Variations in Photoshop CS6 Mac version forced me to learn better image adjustment approaches for pre press color correction and image warming.  I feel confident now to make Photoshop CS6 my prime-time work tool and move the Photoshop CS4 launch icon off of my Mac OS app Dock.  Thanks again, R_Kelly.

  • Correct gamma when using Image Adjustments Exposure?

This is a question on the gamma adjustment available in Image > Adjustments > Exposure on Photoshop CS2 for Windows.
The Gamma parameter in Image > Adjustments > Exposure seems to calculate something other than a simple gamma function (i.e. new_pixel = old_pixel ^ gamma) for the shadows.
    The online help says:
"Gamma Adjusts the image gamma, using a simple power function. Negative values are mirrored around zero (that is, they remain negative but still get adjusted as if they were positive)."
Now if I create a simple 8bit greyscale gradient, then apply that function with a gamma value of 1.5 and then plot the result, I get some funny curve in the darks. If I do the same with the grey (middle) slider in the Levels dialog, I get a nice exponential function as expected after a gamma correction.
Can anyone shed some light on what is happening in Image > Adjustments > Exposure > Gamma?
    Thanks a lot in advance

I cannot repro that. Here's what I do:
    1. Start a new document, 256x256 pixels, sRGB color space
    2. Add two vertical guides to the left and the right border, so you can snap to it
    3. Make a black-to-white gradient with dithering on from left to right, snapping to the guides
    4. Duplicate the background layer twice, producing layer 2 and 3
    5. With layer 2 active, open Image > Adjustments > Exposure and set Gamma=1.5, click OK
    6. With layer 3 active, hit Ctrl+L for Levels and set the middle (grey) input levels value to 1/1.5 = 0.6667 and hit OK
    7. Now turn the visibility of layer 3 on and off --> you will see a difference in the blacks, in pixel columns 60 and below; you could also use the color sampler tool to verify the pixel values are different. For example, the pixel at x=40, y=165 has RGB=1/1/1 with the exposure tool, and RGB=4/4/4 with the Levels tool.
Note: At least on my system, the difference is MUCH more visible when I use the color profile generated by an Xrite eyeone that calibrates my system to D65, gamma 2.2, 120 cd/m^2. Without the profile, the difference is barely visible.

  • Is there an order in which i should learn the CC/CS applications? Does it help in a certain order?

I'm new to all CS applications, though I'm familiar wit the concepts. I just bought CC and want to start teaching myself how to use each app (primary end goal being photoshop, illustrator, and inDesign). is there an order in which i should learn the apps that makes it easier to comprehend it and others?
    thanks!

    Hi Blair,
Personally, I think they are all unique enough in their own right that the order wouldn't really matter. I'm biased towards Photoshop. You might want to spend time going through the content here:
    http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-photoshop-cc/
    http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-illustrator-cs6/

    and here

If you already know the concepts, it will be a matter of learning the interface and how to apply the concepts in practice.

  • Lift and stamp image adjustments inconsistently working

Just started playing with Aperture a few hours ago and seem to have intermittent problems lifting and stamping image adjustments. The manual has little info about lifting, beyond metadata, but sometimes I'm able to also lift image adjustments (color correction, crop, etc.). This was an advertised feature, so I assume the lack of info in the manual about lifting image adjustments is an oversight (or I am missing it). Unfortunately, I'm not usually able to lift image adjustments. They appear to be consistently availabel in the Lift HUD right after I make the adjustment to the image, but if I click away and then back, the adjustment is gone.
I think it has something to do with the tiny icons on the lower-right part of some of my images. The one I usually see when I make some adjustments is a small white box with a left and right arrow on top of each other. This typically indicates that something isn't synched in other programs, but I don't know what needs to be synched in Aperture. The adjustments remain on the image when I click away and then back to it so they appear to be sticking.
I've seen a couple of other icons show up in the lower right hand corner of images, but haven't been able to figure out what they mean. There doesn't seem to be mention of them anywhere in the Aperture documentation. Does anyone have a pointer or explanation of each of the icons' significance?

OK, I got a bit of an answer from the instructional DVD. In the Image Adjusting section, they talk about lift and stamp. The problem is that you can't just select the image in the image browser, you have to click on the rendered image to lift the adjustments. It looks like you can also do this by option-clicking on the thumbnails.
In the demo, though, they appear to lift and stamp a crop. I can't get anything other than color and luminance adjustments to show up in the list of possible adjustments to lift. Rotation, crop, etc. They're all ignored. Am I missing something?

  • Lightroom 5 make adjustments want to transfer to photo shop to make additional adjustments. how do you keep the adjustments made in lr5 when photo is transferred to photo shop

lightroom 5 make adjustments want to transfer to photo shop to make additional adjustments. how do you keep the adjustments made in lightroom 5 when photo is transferred to photo shop
I am not able to keep the changes made in light room when I transfer to photo shop

Something you need to understand. Unless you are using the latest version of Photoshop Elements, it's possible that some of the adjustments that you make in Lightroom won't transfer to Elements if you choose the option to open anyway. If you choose the option to edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments then Lightroom will create a TIF or PSD file (depending on your preferences), and that file will include all of the adjustments that you have made using Lightroom. Then you can finish your work in Photoshop Elements.
The process of transferring an image from Lightroom to Photoshop or Photoshop Elements involves the Camera Raw plug-in. It has to be used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments and apply those adjustments to the image after it has been converted. Files open in Elements or Photoshop or no longer raw images because those programs are incapable of editing raw image data. I don't know if this will help you in this situation. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

I have one folder with several projects all of which Aperure can not find the original.  I do not use referenced files.  I can't make any adjustments like cropping etc. What can I do to adjust or print any of these photos?  IO have no ther projects with this problem.  My Aperture Library is automatically saved to two external drives.
    Dick Koos

I have one folder with several projects all of which Aperure can not find the original.
Have you checked inside your Aperture library, if the original files are still there?
Try to find out, when the images in those projects have been originally imported, then open the Aperture library by ctrl-clicking it and using the command "Show package contents" from the pop-up menu. In the window that will open, select the folder "Masters" and browse the contents. You need to find the subfolder with the year you imported the images, then the folders with the month and the day.
Are your original files still there?
If yes, copy them to a folder on your desktop for safe-keeping, and then try, if repairing the permissions and the other Furst Aid tools will help Aperture to connect to these missing files again - see this link:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
If the First Aid Tools don't help, then check, if Aperture has moved the missing images to a "recovered folder". If not, reimport the images, you saved to your Desktop and use the Lift&Stamp tool to transfer any adjustment and captions to your reimported images.

  • Good way to start with the learning the 11g concepts

    Hi,
I have a work experience on the BEA weblogic server 8.1 sp4 on which i have worked for about 2 year now. My current assignment requires working with the Installation/ Development and deployment in the Fusion middleware 11g server. Could some body please suggest me a good way to start with the learning the 11g concepts.
I understand that all the documentations are available in the Oracle forum, but i want to understand where to start from.
my core tasks in the assignment would be
    1. installation (OSB on top of WLS).
    2. development/configuration on OSB.
    3. Deployment and administrative tasks.
    regards,
    Prakhar

Hi thanks for the update. I have been going through the links and found them very useful.
    I have few new doubts.
In all the tutorials for getting started with the Fusion middleware, the examples which are given use the Oracle JDeveloper extensively. This IDE is used for implementing the BEPL and other important aspects. I found this very similar to the Workshop IDE initially bundled with the BEA-Weblogic 8.1. Is JDeveloper enhanced to accomodate the features of the Weblogic Workshop IDE?
Also, i need some information regarding the Eclipse IDE which is bundled with the OSB installation. Are there any tutorials available which show how to use the Eclipse IDE with OSB.
Also, can the Eclipse IDE be used to implement the same set of components which are being developed using the JDeveloper in the tutorials.
My concern here is i want to know the best way to start with the training/development. I am already familiar with the Eclipse IDE and donot want to switch to the JDeveloped unless it is absolutely necessary. Can one of these IDE be used repeacebly in place of other.
Please inform me if in case my wuestion is not clear.
    Regards,
    Prakhar

  • How can i reduce the saturation of a image to make it almost transparent ?

how can i reduce the saturation of a image to make it almost transparent ?

You're talking about two different things:
"Saturation" means the amount of colour, so you would use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to lower the saturation to make the image (or layer) appear more "black and white".
"Transparency" is set by reducing the value of the "Opacity" in the Layers panel.  If that Opacity adjustment isn't available for the layer you want to make more transparent, first double-click on the layer to change it from a "Background" layer to a regular layer.

I want to import still images to make a stop motion animation, but when I try to change the duration of still images, it isn't reflected in the timeline.  How can I do this?

    Tonaw,
If you import your still images using iPhoto, then the time you set for each still, using FCPX Perferences works.
You can set the durantion from 1 frame to as long as you want them view.
If you do not use iPhoto to import your stills, the default is 10 sec's.
FYI: This issue was brought up within a month after FCPX was released. They found out by using iPhoto, you had better control of the amount of time your still was viewed.

  • How do I make the background in an image transparent?

...How do I make the background in an image transparent?

It sounds like you're gif is a picture of a white background with a black chess piece on top. If that's the case, you're going to have to cut the black chess piece out of the gif. Save ~just~ the image of the chess piece. Discard the white background. Use only the image of the black chess piece with no background image at all.
Keep in mind that Java doesn't know that the white background isn't a part of the image. It doesn't understand that the white part is just the background. As far as it's concerned, the whole gif is the image. Only the component that ~contains~ that gif can become transparent.
So, if you want to have a white background to start with and then have that background become transparent when the piece moves, make the background of the ~component~ holding the image of the chess piece white. When the piece moves, have the background of the component holding the image of the chess piece become transparent.

  • I have vision issues and I find myself having to adjust the the page to a larger setting by zooming or using the control+plus feature on my keyboard to inlarge the page.Is there a way I can make these adjustments permanent for every page I link to?

I just upgraded to Windows 7 and since then I have to enlarge the screen every time I go to a new page.I need to make these adjustments permanent if possible.Thanks.
P.S. Could this be a Microsoft phenomenon?
IE doesn't do it,but Firefox and Google Chrome does.

There are some add-ons that can be used to change the zoom level on all sites, for example:

  • Make subtle adjustments to simlar symbols on the stage

Let's say I create a symbol of a stick figure holding a shield.
    Symbol 1: The Stick man
    Symbol 2: The Shield
Symbol 3: the Stick man holding the shield.
Now, how would it be possible to place several copies of Symbol 3 on the stage while making subtle adjustments to EACH symbol 3 on the stage.
    Is this possible?
Let's say I want to make each stickman slightly a different color without every single stickman taking on the same color.
Then I may want symbol 2 (the shield) to be a slightly different color in each of the stickman.
How could I go about making this subtle of an adjustment without effecting every instance of symbol 1 and 2 on the stage. Is this possible in flash??? It seems that flash has so much power, but I have yet to figure out how to use it all, and I sure hope something like this is possible.
If I need to explain what I mean, I sure will take the time to do this, but if someone could help me out here, that would be hugely appreciated.

If you give each symbol instance an instance name, then you can operate on any of the properties of each of those symbols. So, for instance, if you have one instance of symbol 3 on the stage, select it and, in the Properties window, give it an instance name of "figure1". If you then double click on this instance, you can open it in to edit its content. This symbol will contain two symbols. Select each one separately and name each, say "man" and "shield".
Now, every time you bring a copy of the figure from the Library to the stage, it will contain two named symbol instances. If you select this new instance on the stage and name it, you can then address the symbols inside separately from the symbols inside "figure1".
The options for changing the color of any given symbol are limited. One way to go about this is to edit the shield symbol, add a layer, and then add a new symbol that you can use for the color change.
