Leary of updating to 1.2

I have a 5G 30GB and have to date had not a single problem. I have updated to itunes 7.0.1 and still no problem. But now, problem. I downloaded a couple of TV shows from iTunes but cannot load them to my iPod. I get a message saying the version I have is too old. I've had the ipod for nearly a year and have (don't laugh) version 1.0 software. I have been reading the posts here and am horrified by some of the problems people are having. Soooo, my question is: Do I try the upgrade and pray it come out ok or does someone have an alternative solution? ANY feedback is appreciated. I absolutely LOVE my iPod and would devastated if something happened to it.

Here's the deal JB.
IF you have never downloaded videos before then gp ahead and update to 1.2 as you will need to do that to play any videos you downloaded off of iTunes 7.0x.
HOWEVER, if you have any videos you downloaded off of iTunes 6.x and have not yet watched, then do NOT update to iPod firmware version 1.2 yet.
This is because if you do, and go to watch the older videos, your iPod will lock up after just a few seconds.
Apparently Apple decided, that even if you purchased videos off of iTunes in the past NOT to have their newest version of their software be able to play them, thus in effect making them worthless.
However, I don't expect that I will be getting a refund anytime soon.
I have posted directly to Apple but they do not seem to be posting any revised updates so I guess that is their response.
Just be wary JB, be wary!

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" - can't open iTunes

    Hi guys,
I'm a huge Apple fan so I obviously decided to upgrade to Apple 7.0.1 the day it came out... installed it. Opened it up, but within just a few seconds i got a Windows message saying
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
I reinstalled it and still have the same problem.
First few days I could atleast keep iTunes open for a few minutes before the message, but now its down to just a few seconds.
I run Windows XP if that helps any.
Please help me fix this problem or tell me how I can put iTunes 6 back on my computer --- I need my music!
    Thanks

After downloading and installing 7.0.1 my iTunes would not open either. Even worse is you can't go back to v6 if you had v7 running--the database is updated.
Luckily I was able to get my iTunes to open again by doing the following:
    Click Start/Run
    Type in "%userprofile%\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
    Click Start/Run again.
    Type in "%userprofile%\local settings\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
Try opening your iTunes again. It may re-ask some general setup questions, but mine opened without the error, and it still had all my music. However, I did have to re-authorize my computer.
I used to never be leary about updating iTunes... guess Apple's software ain't no peach, either.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • My thoughts, ?s, experiences with my new zvm:60 after having a 30gb for 5hrs pr

This is my first post here. I am a forum user so Ill try not to be a troll. I did get done pouring over the threads here for hrs too.
So I went shopping for my first media player a while ago. I read all the reviews I could on every player known to man (CC is a great retail web site to get reviews and the bay). Well the Zen:M seemed to take the cake as the best player for a demanding seasoned tech user. And really just plain over all.
So I bought a 30gb player from a private online seller (you can guess) and after getting it up and running found all the reviews to be true. Infact I even loved it more than I anticipated. However my experience was cut short. I had finished using the player, turned it off (it fully shut itself down), placed it in my coat pocket and draped the coat over a chair when it suddenly fell out of my coat onto a hard wood floor. Now the unit was in a thin silicon skin and could not have fallen more than 2ft (more like ft) and that was all folks. Dead as a door nail. No power up, no ?help me? when connected to the comp, no rest button, nothing. All it did when connected was flash the power/hold button charge light abnormally fast with a clicking sound? Huh? I think the battery somehow came disconnected. ?To anyone reading this, are all these fine players this sensiti've to vibration? Yeah I know its a HD player, and no one wants to see their player dropped, so is this the norm?
Which brings me to my new ZVM60. Love it. The only difference I notice, other than the size (getting to that) is it seems the touch sensor is slightly more sensiti've. Great, I like that! Now the size. It should be noted that as of now this 60gb player is WIDELY mis-documented as being the same size as the 30gb. Infact a well known web retailer I bought this from is a culprit of this also. I also bought an extended 2 yr warrantee after this past incident. However Im having a real hard time finding a skin or case for it. The leather one doesnt appeal to me sorry. I searched the threads here and am finding nothing. Anything new come around since? Id love to get a ToughSkin for it but am not holding my breath. I dont mind having a player that by all standards is a TANK. Just let me protect my tank. On that note, anyone know why the 60gb is bigger? I thought all PCMCIA HDs were the same size.
Lastly, Im using this player with a properly maintained XP computer with WMP0. I rip all my store bought CDs at 28 in WMA. This and some ripped vinyl is how the player is primarily used. Am I missing anything? Also the player has firmware ver .0.04 , is it worth updating? Im kinda leary to update having been around BIOS flashing nightmares back in the day. Will I loose all my data doing a firm update? Also, I dont know if anyone out there is doing this but I heard the newer Alpine car stereos can work with a bare bone external HD filled with audio files. I got that info from a few reliable sources. Anyone doing this and know what file format these heads are compatible with? Id rather not have to keep my Zen in the car if I dont have to risk it. Also any takes on how Im doing things here are more than welcome.
So in conclusion I love my Zen. Id simply like a good skin to protect it with?? The GF has a coughPOD video, will see what she thinks of this not so little guy. Also will keep all up to date on any findings I have. Please do the same.
    Dave

I will check out the web site. On that note thanks for it. However, as stated in the thread, the 60gb, EVER SO SAD, is a bit thicker than the 30gb. Im really praying some skins come out. Ive been playing with this player all night long. ON THAT NOTE, people complaining and having issues with the bass. I know where you are coming from. However a semi solution can be had with playing with the vol limiter in combo with the bass boost func and the custom EQ. Im sure this is no news flash to most techies out there. However being an audiofool (aka audiophile) and knowing a little about the hardware involved in all this. I have a really bad feeling, and bad track record of being right on this when Id rather not be, that this is infact an OP-AMP issue and power dedication issue too the afore mentioned. Firmware or not, you play with bass boost and EQ and there is no way to get this player to dedicate enough KICK, as its been termed here, to the headphones without distortion. I think this may be WHY there hasnt been a working firmware fix to this issue. I think some may not realize, as the old analogy goes, a chain is only as stong as its weakest link, and I have a BAD feeling that the OP-AMP is that link holding this fine player back. No bad feeling to those in the design depo. I know how cost concerns go and who those who dont know JACK dictate construction. Im sure you all tried your hardest to design the best player on the market. You suceeded in all regard IMO. Creative may be making some SERIOUS mistakes by not properly supporting their prodigy birth but dont give up on designing some killer players for us who do notice and infact buy. We buyers who do infact know and buy what is really best rely on you R&D and Designers out there, who I hope somehow read these threads, or get a heads up now and then, that we praise you and thank you for doing what no others out there do, by designing a player that really does meet the expections of the small market that has a brain and appreciates what you do. A small thanx to those that really matter. Keep up the good work! You do infact matter in an age where real genius gets overlooked. Dave?

  • Ipod Software 1.3

Does the new Ipod software 1.3 solve any problems or create more? I have a 20gig gen3 that was rendered useless after going up to 1.2 but my Nano is fine at 1.1. Anymore I am leary of updating anything unless it's not working!!

it's required for the Nike Voice Kits:

i don't have an especially good feel for what the bug fixes were with 1.3. could you describe the problems you were getting with 1.2?

  • No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1update

Today i tried to solve a big issue after updating my AppleTV's to 5.1.1 (actual version: AppleTV3,1_5.1_10A406e_Restore.ipsw). After updating my Apple TV´s, they could not connect to  the Apple activation server. No Home Sharing was adjustable and also logging in iTunesStore was not possible. The update I have done via LAN cable, and I changed  nothing in my network configuration. The network (networkadress via DHCP) is indeed set up by default in the AppleTV automatically. Nevertheless, nothing went. Then I removed the network cable and made a reset of the AppleTV and tried to connect via Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi, he finds the activation server and everything works as it should. Home Sharing, iTunes, streaming. However, once the network cable is plugged in and the Apple TV is restarted, it is again not possible to get access the iTunesStore. Home Sharing is not possible. The networkcable are fine. Both MacBook, as well as my TVs have internet connection over the same network cable. If I unplug the network cable from the AppleTV again, anything goes. Only via WLAN, but it's just too slow to stream data from my Mac. I have this "strange behavior" on 3 AppleTV 3.Gen., which are in the apartment. The previous iOS-Version on the same network cables, worked great. Can anyone reproduce the problem? Or have I now 3 bricked devices? I tried to downgrade over itunes. But this is not possible anymore. I installed 3 times the update. But nothing goes. Please can anybody help me.

I found another link titled "Apple TV Death after update"  and found several links that have proven to work to restore to the previous version.  Here is my post:
"I had originally replied to a post titled "No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1 update". That has been my issue after updating to 5.1. Wirless worked for me but iTunes match and Podcasts were slow to respond. I finally downgraded to the previous version (5.0.2). So far, my ATV3 has been operating exactly as it did out of the box. No more activation failed message, and all components of ATV are functioning flawlessly on my whole home LAN network.
I also wonder what Apple was thinking for releasing this update without adaquate testing. I can forgive them for Maps, but not this. ATV has been around long enough for all of the kinks to be worked out and any updates to just plain work. I did like the new menu displays in apps and how you could rearrange the program icons on the home screen.
Perhaps they will get it right. Some day. But until they show proof that any future updates are correct and provide detailed instructions on how to revert back to a previous version, I will be very leary of updating. Spending a week reading message boards on how to do a simple resotre is not my idea of how to spend my weekends.
As a side note, I am a PC, so to restore from an .ispw file located on your system, you must press the Alt & Shift keys togather, then click the Restore button, and a window will pop-up so you can select the location for the restore file."
    Directions to restore:
"Yes you can. I am a PC. Download the .ipsw file and save to your desktop. Unplug the LAN, HDMI and power cable. Connect the usb cable from your laptop to the ATV. If iTunes does not automatically launch, start it. After iTunes is running, plug in the power cable to the ATV. iTunes will recognize the ATV and will open the restore window in iTunes.
Press the Alt and Shift keys togather, then click on the Restore button. A file window will open so you can navigate to the desktop (or where ever you saved the file). Select the AppleTV3,1_5.-.2_9B830_Restore.ipsw file. iTunes will start the restore process.
When you see the message that it has completed the restore, unplug the usb cable and power cable. Reconnect the LAN and HDMI cable then plug in the Power cable in that sequence.
Follow the setup procedure again and all should be as it was before."

  • Error occurs, repair DMM software, error goes away - rinse and repeat

This error first happened early last year, then it occurred last month and now it's popped up twice this week.  What could cause a missing library to repeatedly go missing?
The error is in TestStand, but the origin in in LabVIEW:
I can't recall what I did the first time I saw this error, but the last three times it happened I fixed it by repairing the NI-DMM installation:

Are the sequence modules all LabVIEW code or are you calling into DMM or DAQmx from other languages as well
I notice that your drivers are a bit out of date.  Consider upgrading DAQmx and DMM to latest. (lots of bugs have been removed in DAQmx and DMM)
But do try setting the regisrty key first
    I'm using a PXI-4065 DMM in a PXI-1042 chassis.
    TestStand 4.0 Development System License.
    LabVIEW 8.2
    LabVIEW Adaptor
TestStand load/unload settings don't seem to apply.  This is a well-established production sequence that is running on two ATEs and I only have trouble with this one.
    All modules are LabVIEW.
I'm leary of updating DAQmx & DMM, but I will once I image my HD.
I don't want to edit the registry because the problem is intermittent on only one machine and repairing the DMM installation temporarily fixes the problem.

  • Nokia 6630 - Nokia PC Suite Support Update

Hi to everyone out there to help me,
Few weeks ago, I updated my phone software and after that, I found out that I could view old messages and send new ones from my pc. I loved that feature, but didn't use it often. As I wanted to use it again today, I couldn't... I can view my contacts, calender entries, but cannot view my messages. I can send new ones though...
An error occurs as I connect my phone to my pc (via cable), which I had beforehand too I guess. It's not English, so I will translate it myself:
    "Nokia PC Suite
In order to make your phone support new features, the PC Suite support on your phone has to be updated.
Would you like to update the PC Suite support on your cell phone (Nokia 6630)?"
    - I click on the green tick.
A quick dissapearing window pops up... It's hard to tell what appears even on my own language xD:
    "Installing...
Accept all upcoming approvals on your phone"
Then in 1-2 seconds the message changes into:
     "PC Suite support installation failed"
    - I click on the green tick, the only option.
Well, as I said before, besides that I am unsure, this problem existed beforehand, and I could view my messages even like that.
I tried repairing the Nokia PC Suite, after I send this message I will uninstall and install it once... I will update the situation...

Update (as of date above): 5.03.08

    Connection via Nokia DKU-2 USB
I have exactly same problem as you described:
    PC Suite (7.1.51.0)
    message box displays:
The PC Suite support installed on your phone must be updatedto support new features.
Do you want to udpadte PC Suite support on your cell phone (Nokia 6630)?

As this goes on a banner momentarilydisplays on the phone, it is an Icon and the name "INSTALLER"
    this  happens twice
    then finally,
    PC Suite support instalation failed
    On the phone i see:
       Tools->Manager-->
            (App. Manager)
             PC_Suite_Sup (70kb)
             Version 1.7.0
On its status, it says it is NOT INSTALLED
So I select the option to install it but when I view the details again its status still says NOT INSTALLED.
I go on and Select REMOVE and it is dutifully removed from the list.
I coldboot the phone and upon verifying that it is not on the app manager list. I restart PC Suite and go through the procedures above (Install PC Suite support) and again it ends up with pc suite installation failed.
Checking on the appmanager, it reappears on the list. but it is NOT INSTALLED as per its status.
I'm thinking perhaps if there was an app (PC SUITE SUPPORT) i can download and install via PC SUite then perhaps that would solve the problem, but I've grown weary (leary?) of trawling Nokia's site(s) for it as I've ended up with zilch thus far.
Any one out there that can help? Someone from Nokia would be nice ...
Ihope i get notification of replies ...

  • IPhone 2.0 Update let down on original iPhone!!!

APPLE, YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! HAS ANYONE NOT NOTICED THAT THE SPEAKER VOLUME FOR YOUR IPOD ON THE ORIGINAL IPHONE HAS GOTTEN MUCH MUCH LOWER?
I NOW HAVE TO PUT MY EAR UP TO IT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG! WOW, IT IS SOOOO LOW?
    AM I ALONE? SO ANNOYING!!!

Sad news. This happened to me long ago when I upgraded from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 .. the volume just disappeared. I took it to the Apple store where the Genius said he'd never seen that happen before. He spent about 3 minutes testing the phone then ..
gave me a brand new one. He said that somehow the update had affected the volume somehow, he didn't know.
All that to say, after that experience I was leary about upgrading to 2.0 but I did it yesterday and wouldn't you know it .. I can barely hear the ipod or anything again. Apparently this is a rare condition that happens to only a small group of iPhone owners. My warranty expires in August so I'm scheduling an appointment at our Apple store. Hopefully they'll give me a 3G phone. I imagine that's what they'd have to give me if they don't sell the old ones anymore. I suggest that you make an appointment at your Apple store too. Take the phone in, let them listen to the volume .. perhaps this is all good news if we get brand new 3G phones for free.

  • OS X 10.5.8 update. Recieved 10.6.3 in which I need 10.6 to update from there

Here is my issue, Seems common place for OS X 10.5.8 upgrade. I tried to call support to ask a question about ordering the snow leopard update so I can make my computer function properly in this day and age. They wanted to charge me $20 for that. I refused. After researching the apple site on said upgrade I was lead to believe I needed to buy the Snow leopard disk 10.6 from the apple store and then do an online update to 10.6.3 from there so for $20 I chose to order the disk. I've recieved the 10.6.3 in the mail. A bit leary of opening the package and trying it because I was able to download snow leopard 10.6.8 and 10.6.3 online and after trying to install, my computer tells me I need 10.6 first. Do I even bother opening the package and trying or do I send it back and pay them $20 to talk to me? Cannot get any online support because I need updated browsers in which I am trying to do with all this, which leads me to here.

I'm afraid that story is a touch confusing but I will try to unravel it.   The order of events should be ...
You have (so you say) 10.5.8.   You want to go to Snow leopard.   So ...
Check that your machine is capable of running snow Leopard.
It needs to be a Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.   Double check by reading the specs.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -Read the Technical Specifications
If it does, buy the Snow Leopard disk from the on-line store.   It will arrive as 10.6.3
Before you start upgrading, back up your files.   If you are unsure how best to do this, the following link is hugely informative.   Most commonly used backup methods: Apple Support Communities
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard, as your upgrade took you to 10.6.3 you will need to apply the Combo updater.  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1  and follow that with software updates to pick up the most recent security and iTunes updates.
    Regards.

  • How do I disable updates I don't want?

I getting notifications to update Numbers and Pages. I don't like the new versions and wish to keep using the '09 versions.
The notification that appears gives me the option to install now or be reminded later—I can't find any way to turn down the update permanently or to stop receiving update notices.

Thanks, that's probably what I'll end up doing. I'm a little leary, though, because I had downloaded them earlier and had a lot of various problems, including documents that wouldn't open with either version. That's why I deleted the new ones and went back to the '09 versions.
I suppose I can re-download them, and just leave them unused to prevent any problems. I was hoping there was a way of turning off the notifications, however.

  • Updating system with dialup

Since I am on 26.4 kbs dialup and the first time I tried Su my dialup died and I had to try again, but was locked out. So then I tried pacman -U on one file at a time I started with db-4.6.21-, this went fine but when it finished and updated the system I lost wvdial so no modem. I used the boot disk and copied the db4.5 over and got my modem back. But now I am leary and do not know if there is a certain order to update so as not to cause conflicts with the current system till everything is downloaded. Trying to download over 850MB will take me over 2 weeks to do so I must be careful or I will be right back to the beginning again. Any Ideas as to the order of the files or is there a way to download parts of packets and combine them ?? Thanks

I successfully ran Arch on dialup for a couple years. I'm not certain what problem you have exactly, but here's some tips:
    * pacman -Suw will download all the packages without installing them. pacman -Sw packagename will download a specific package without installing it
    * pacman supports download resume, so if your connection crashes you should be able to start over where you left off.
            - if this doesn't work: try a different mirror OR try using wget as your downloader
    * trickle is a neat program that allows you to limit pacman to 1k per second so it runs in the background while you browse. This still takes up a 3rd of your bandwidth, but it does allow you to be semi functional.

  • Let windows update drivers under bootcamp?

I've got a copy of windows running under boot camp.  Windows wants to update out dated drivers.  I'm a bit leary about letting it do so, and am assuming that bootcamp is taking care of all the video, network, keyboard and all the other drivers.
Should I let windows do it's evil to create the world it needs to run smoothly, or should I let bootcamp protect it's perimiter and do all the driver updates in Lion?

Keep Windows current. Keep it backed up. Make sure it is creating restore points.
Boot Camp is not takiinng care of everything, though some things Wiindows can't do (video) without you uninstalling and updating the gpu driver first. Which you should have done as soon as you installed Windows.
You can always rollback or boot from the Windows DVD and restore.
Keep Windows current and patched. There were a lot of updates each Patch Tuesday. Same as you would keep Lion current with Flashback and other security and drivers.

  • Software Updates gone wild!!!

For some strange reason the little Software Update icon that bounces in the dock to let me know I have some stuff to download is going crazy! It keeps bouncing down there ever 10 minutes or so. I have reasons for not updating my computer at the moment because I am in the middle of a video editing project. I even unchecked the box that says Check for updates weekly, monthly, or daily. Before I unchecked it, it was set to weekly. For some reason it has been doing it daily and its annoying. I do want to upgrade at some point just not now. It wants me to update my iTunes, Airport Utility, Quicktime and latest Security update. I am guessing the only way I can make it stop is to download everything.
I am also a little leary too because I have read on here about some people having issues with their computers once they downloaded some of those same things I have yet to download.
I don't want to disable the software update reminder thing but I want it to stop popping up every 10 minutes though.

But you have not read about all the folk who do download and install the updates and never post here because they have no need to do so.
The only reason not to update is when you know your system is not working properly. Fix the system first then update. Falling behind in updates is a sure way to let your computer fall behind in such things as bug fixes, security etc.

  • Updating apps and getting wrong email address

I recently purchased a new iPhone 5S.  On three occasions, the app store has indicated that I have apps to update.  When I click to update, it asks me for a my password but shows the wrong email address.  All three times it is the same address.  This address is not an address that has ever been related to me or anyone in my family.  There is not a problem with any other app updates and this is not happening with my new iPad. I am somewhat worried that I have been hacked already with owning this phone for only 3 weeks.  If you can't help me with this please give me some advice on how to get tech support from Apple because going through their system did not seem to work for me.

Thanks.  I think this was the second time I had the problem with the one app.  I had some problems (but different) with the other app on my old phone.  I am a little leary that this problem is resolved because with deleting the apps, it is just deleting them from the phone not from the cloud so when I loaded them on the phone I am thinking that I am just loading the same messed up app again.  Both apps that have given me this trouble are very commonly used non-Apple apps.  Anyway, I will come back again if I have problems with this again.

  • 11.1 iTunes update not connecting other macs on home sharing

With the new 11.1 iTunes update I am unable to connect with other macs on homesharing. They are appearing nowhere in my iTunes however my mac is appearing in their iTunes. I have tried de-autherising my computer with no luck Anyone else with this problem? With this update I also lost all my podcasts and I would desperately like them back. HELP!!!

I already have what you ( ClayandLonnie ) have suggested with the preferences>Shareing Preferences set to share all.
I have tried turing it off, and then back on.
I have tried just sharing specific items and this still did not work.
I am going to try stepping back down to 11.04.4 as previously suggested by TheDarkCanuck when I get home tomorrow. (maybe saturday).  I am just leary about having to recreate all my libraries and how long that might take.  I have over 1.5 TB of Music and Video, that is why I would like to get it working in the current version.
Just because I don't have a Mac, it seems that this is not being taken as a real problem for the windows 7 users (maybe it is specific to 64bit).  I may try the 32bit version to see if that fixes it first.  Unless someone else has, and want to chime in.
