Leave a disc in?

Is there any problem with leaving a disc in my iMac's drive on a regular basis? I don't use the disc drive very often but my son plays a certain game that is on DVD and I thought--why not just leave it in the drive instead of putting it away every day?

Duane-
Good point. If the drive sensed no disc it would not try to spin it up. Any disc in the drive would cause it to periodically spin up to max and step back until it hit the correct speed, thus causing wear and tear on the mechanism.
Not exactly like leaving an 8-inch boot floppy in the drive of yesteryear, however the less wear and tear the better.

I've imported an iPhoto library from a disc to my iPhoto 09 account,
    What exactly did you do?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Leaving a Disc in my SuperDrive?

    Hi,
Is it better for my PowerBook SuperDrive to always leave a disc in it? I say this because whenever I wake my Mac or turn it on the drive makes a weird noise. It's not abnormal, it's just when a disc is inside it makes no noise at all.
Anyone know if it's OK to just always leave a disc in?
    Regards,
    Jamie

AFAIK, there's no problem with leaving a disk in, but
there's no reason. The noise you hear when waking the
computer is just the drive checking itself and making
sure it's ready to accept a disk; all 'books do it.
Thanks for the info, I just like no noise when I wake my Mac. Maybe I'm spoilt with the quietness of my Mac

  • Leaving Disc in Drive

Is it advisable / beneficial / or even possible to leave a disc in the drive at all times? I'd like to leave a CDRW in there for convenience sake.

    Hi Kirk,
Do you want to leave the CDRW in the drive for "convenient" backups? If that's the case, consider a USB flash drive or other flash media in combination with a PC card adapter. Both will be much, much faster/easier backing up data than a CDRW, and flash media comparable in size to a CD can readily be found for $10-$20.
I use an external Firewire HD for complete backups every week or two, but in between, I back up any/every newly created or updated file to a compact flash card seated in a PC card adapter (left almost permanently in the PC card slot), as I create/revise files. Fast, easy, inexpensive, and portable. Just something to think about if backup is the purpose you have in mind.

  • I think that my MacBook Superdrive has been scratching my discs...

    Hi,
I think that my MacBook Pro drive has been scratching my CDs. Today I was installing Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro and when I ejected the disc I found a linear scratch in the disc surface, however they are very small and you can barely see then unless I put the disc into the light with an angle. The scratches are not circular. I think that my discs are getting scratched due to the aluminum around the Superdrive slot in my MacBook Pro. I don't recall myself scratching the disc and I am very careful putting them inside the slot drive entry.
Has anyone heard or experienced disc linear scratches with the aluminum slots in MacBook Pros, iMacs?

    Jwohlert wrote:
I just tried putting a CD in and ejecting it after a while. It almost seem too protected by the foam inside the superdrive to be damaged. There were no scratches when I got it out. You can check if the foam just inside of the drive is damaged in anyway leaving your discs to scratch the aluminum body
I don't know what to tell you about the foam inside of the superdrive. Are you refering to that gray-leather looking covering in the opening of the superdrive? I am very careful putting disc inside of the Superdrive and the scratches are straight in line but you can barely see them unless you put the disc at an angle and put direct light into it's surface. I should also note that the disc that was affected by the scratch was the OSX install disc which I had to insert to install the Bootcamp Drivers.

  • Burning/copying BOOTABLE System discs

As the original OS disks are at one end of the country and I am often the other, I have tried to make a copy using +Disc Utility+ along the lines appearing under 'help' or with the fuller description that appears at:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/making_dvdcopies.html
This makes a DVD that looks just fine in terms of all the files being there, but if I try to run the 'Install Mac OS X' file, I get the message '*The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this disk.* To install MacOS X please use the application provided on the Mac X installation disk', which, of course, is why I wanted to make a copy in the first place!
Also, it is not possible to use this disk as a bootable one using the 'c'-key routine.
I know this topic turns up in the Archive, but the suggested solution seems to be what I am doing. I remember from years ago (in an ancient version of Toast) there was a separate box to tick to make a bootable disc, am I missing something subtle in +Disc Utility+?
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks, George

Thanks for this confirmation, at the risk of boring you all to death, I shall try to delineate each step in case someone can spot the essential one I am missing.
As I only have a single DVD drive fitted, a two-step process (as suggested above, either following the Apple ‘Help’ suggestions or that described on
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/making_dvdcopies.html
Initially, copying the disc on to the HD, then burning a disc copy of that.
    The individual steps are:
1 Mount the DVD (which launches the DVD player), quit the DVD player leaving the disc icon on the desktop.
2 Open Disk Utility, select the DVD (not the drive!) from the list, click ‘New Image’ (2nd along the top bar).
3 In the resultant ‘Save As’ enter the name and destination HD
4 Set ‘Image Format’ to DVD/CD Master (tried encryption and also set this to ‘none’), then click ‘Save’. This produces a ‘.cdr’ and NOT a ‘.dmg’ suffix for some reason. A Progress bar, which takes a fair few minutes to progress, appears.
5 Once this has copied, a new entry appears in the left (bottom) of the Disk Utility window, still with the .cdr suffix. I then eject the original DVD.
6 Select this .cdr image from the list in the Disk Utility window and click the ‘Burn’ button and check that the window of Disk Utility that has appeared has the correct writer. Insert a blank DVD to the writer, select speed and ‘Verify’, then click ‘burn’ (bottom right).
This produces what appears to be an identical disc to the system disc, but as suggested above, if I try to run the 'Install Mac OS X' file, I get the message '*The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this disk.* To install MacOS X please use the application provided on the Mac X installation disk'
Unlike my old Toast, at no point is there any mention of whether I am making a bootable disc or not.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Disable Automatic Disc Drive Startup

    Hello,
I have recently been watching a lot of TV DVDs on my MacBook Pro. However, when not watching, I find it very annoying (not to mention wasteful to the drive) that the disc drive automatically tries to boot up everytime I open my computer.
Is there anyway to leave a disc in the drive and only have it turn on when I ask it to in the DVD player?
    Thanks!

    fizzbin1701,
if there’s a disc in the Superdrive, then it will always “rev” when you open your computer. The System Preferences change only prevents the disc from being played automatically.

  • Any way to install Leopard drivers without disc?

My MacBook Pro is currently running the Leopard OS, but I made the mistake of leaving the discs at home - nearly 3000 miles away, in a sealed storage box. Yes, I made a stupid mistake in packing it away. I'm trying to get Boot Camp set up, and to get the necessary drivers, I need the install disc.
My question is - is there any way I can get the drivers installed without using the Leopard install disc? Is there a download somewhere that can help me with that? Or am I totally out of luck?

Sadly, I've been through this too..although, my Mac OS X DVDs were a mere two miles from home. That being said...two miles feels like 3000 when it's -5 degrees fahrenheit outside.
The most recommended alternative I'm aware of is to grab them through the world of BitTorrent.
In my case, I ended up downloading individual drivers from the hardware vendors sites...the downside to this is that you'll be missing a lot of the valuable Apple software that's part of the Boot Camp software installer. That got the basics working (video, chipset & networking, etc.) until I remembered to bring the DVD home from work to install actual Boot Camp software.

  • Burning more photos to a disc that already has photos

I am always burning photos to a disc to bring to a lab to print. Is there a way to leave the disc open so that I can add photos to a disc that already has photos so I don't go through so many discs?

    From Disk Utility Help:
Recording on a recordable CD more than once
Normally, you can burn items to a recordable CD, such as a CD-R or CD-RW, only one time. However, if you use Disk Utility to burn the disc, you can burn items to a disk in more than one session as long as space is available. This is also called multisession burning.
In Disk Utility, create a disk image that contains the files you want to burn to the disc.
The files must be from a volume with a Mac OS Extended disk format. To check a volume's disk format, select the disk in Disk Utility and look at the information at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
Select the disk image in the Disk Utility list and choose Images > Burn.
Select the "Leave disc appendable" checkbox. If you don't see this option, click the triangle in the top-right corner.
Insert a blank recordable CD in the optical drive, and click Burn.
To add more files to the disc later, follow the steps above. You can continue this process until all available space on the disc is used.
Note that to do this, you should export the files that you want to burn to a separate location on your hard disk rather than trying to burn them direct from the iPhoto Library folder.

  • Interrupting Disc Utility 8x overwriting

    Hey There,
I want to erase my drive and stick my G5 iMac on eBay. I did the disk utility thing, and chose 8 times write over. It's been running round the clock for 4 days, and it isn't even halfway. I'd like to quit and ask it to do a few passes manually.
My problem is that when I got to quit the utility, it gives me a message saying if I quit, it could render the drive useless. Since I intend to reinstall OS X as a clean install, does it matter? That is: would you quit at this point, or let it complete it's cycle?
    Heeeeelp!

    You are absolutely correct!
    *ATTENTION APPLE AND USERS*
DO NOT SELECT the overwrite 8x feature. Now that I've tried it, there are two reasons, the second of which is CRITICAL if you value your LCD screen.
    1. For some reason, it takes longer than if you did single overwrites manually. On my iMac, it takes about two hours to do one sweep of a 160GB drive. So, times 8, that should have 16 hours or so. I had it running for 5 days, round the clock, and it barely made it halfway. I believe the 8 times does random stuff, where the 1 times does zeros, but still... something's wrong there. But worse:
    2. If you choose the 8 times, it will mess up your LCD. How? Understand, you're running this disc from a CD. The CD isn't OS X, and so it doesn't dim while it works. So if you leave the LCD on for 5 days as I did, and leave the Disc Utility window in one place, *it burns in an image*. Luckily, it's faint, and only appears to have burned in the shadow effect applied to the window. Still, this may be grounds for asking for an LCD replacement, since there's no warning from Apple of this eventuality.

  • X79A-GD65 8D problem with built in BIOS utilities (browser, etc)

Good day. I have my X79A-GD65 8D running for about a week now paired with i7 3930k. The board is working wonderfully, however there is just one issue. After installing winki from the cd and returning to the bios to use the built in browser or MSI live update, the white splash screen appears for a while and shortly after a black screen appears and remains.
Ive tried leaving the disc in the drive and have the browsre run directly from the CD but still no luck. I've also borrowed the install DVD of a friend of mine who has an identical board but it still doesnt work.
Please note that I am on the latest BIOS, version 1.7.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Must be talking about Winki? The Software Application User Guide covers it pretty well how it all works and such. Using Live Update is not recommended to be installed or used. Do all UEFI/BIOS updates and driver updates manually from the downloaded files available at the MSI Websites.

  • New mac mini and noisy dvd drive

Any time I have a DVD in my brand new mac mini, from commercial DVDs to trying to author a blank DVD, I get the dreaded chainsaw sound that plagues anyone who has owned an xbox 360. Has anyone else suffered with this with their new mac mini or should I send it back to apple

I should have been a little more specific. This happens usually when I try and do slightly disc intensive tasks, such as burn a disc, import a disc to itunes, and I can even get it to sound when I leave a disc in the drive, turn the computer off, and as it's booting it will make the grinding noise. I first thought that the computer couldn't lay on it's side as that's when I first noticed it (sort of like the wii on it's side because this fits my setup), but it makes the same noise whether I have it on it's side or not. This is also not disc specific, I can re-create the noise with different discs, DVDs, CDs when importing to itunes. Guess I'll be taking it to an iTunes store to get it checked out.

  • Blank screen after hibernate, no post

    Toshiba satellite l505d-s5983
I have had this laptop for 4 years, and recently i was running into an issue where my laptop may die in hibernation during my commute.
Usually, I could pop the battery out, use wall power, and windows would resume...
However, one day it just wouldnt come back.
I have tried draining the battery, taking it out, draining the laptop and plugging it back into the wall with no progress.
On boot, LED, USB, DVD, Fans, all work...  caps lock and numberlock flash, and go out....
Screen remains black, no post. I have a toshiba windows 7 disc, but it does no good.
I bought a usb/sata cable and I can access my HD and save my data, so the HD is good
I swapped ram chips one at a time in alternating slots and received nothing.
I plugged the ram into my girl friend's toshiba and it boots fine. So the ram is good.
I attempted using her powercord,  and got nothing.
I plugged up my desktop monitor and got nothing.
I have tried fn/f5 as well and got nothing.
I took apart the laptop, cleaned it up... stripped it down to the basics, plugged in the power and still nothing on the screen.
Having given up,  I bought the exact same laptop on ebay, thinking I could swap the HD's and be good to go...
When I received the laptop, exact same situation... alternated hd, ram, nothing.
It appears to be stuck in hibernation, but I would assume that some combination of wall power, or draining/chargining would fix it on at least one of the two laptops.
    Thoughts?

    Thanks for the quick response...
Hi You said you have the Windows 7 disc, but it does no good. Are trying to boot from the disc. What actually happens. Do you have the boot order set to boot from CD/DVD first and HD second. Are you powering off your PC with Bothdisc in CD Rom and then powering on your PC?
I get a blank screen and I do not even make it to post (toshiba screen) to change boot order. When I power on the laptop, and put the disc in you can hear it spin as if it is attempting to load, but nothing ever comes on the screen. I have also tried leaving the disc in, and powering on the laptop.  - With both, my laptop, and the ebay laptop.
If you can't boot with the disc and the disc is good, you could be looking at a power supply problem, could have a bad power jack or the worst, a bad mother board. You said you tried her power cord. Not wise unless they are the same model.
I have 2 off brand power cords, specifically for my laptop. Both cords receive power at the box, and seem to do fine charging the batteries  for both as well. As a side note, booting with AC unplugged doesn't result in any changes. Her laptop (the 3rd toshiba) is an A205, and seems to have no problem using one of my cords.
Can you borrow a external monitor??
I have a monitor for my HP desktop, which is functioning. When I plug it into the wall, and into either laptop (and attempting fn+f5) I get nothing. No signal from the monitor.
PS Did you get a power adapter with your ebay PC?
It was suppose to be missing a power adapter and an OS. The seller is a computer repair place. There were pics of the laptop at post, and it is the same laptop because it shares a scratch with what was received. The guy is willing to refund me, but it just seems odd that I would come across 2 laptops of the same model with the same problem.
I spoke to another repair person on FB that suggested taking out the cmos to drain the board, but it is soldered in. I have also left the battery and plug out for 24 hrs, thinking it may help drain some juice, to no avail.
I have been googling for almost 2 days, between msg boards/youtube etc... and i'm pretty stumped. I am not taking apart the ebay model, but i have tried practically everything i can think of, as far as disconnecting components on mine, and hoping for a post.
ultimately, I want to be able to use my hard drive as is, in a laptop, primarily because of the programs that are installed, with the least expense attached as my job will not replace the laptop.

  • Urgent help needed - deadline - iDVD project suddenly gone corrupt?

Ive literally finished and ironed out the problems Ive had with a big Dual Layer project Ive been working on for 2 weeks.
Yesterday I successfully burned a project to DVD - and I had not been having any problems.
Then suddenly I tried another burn later in the day - and after all the encoding - iDVD ejected the blank DVD (before burning it) and appeared to freeze. The burn status bar remained complete saying project status: done. However iDVD was frozen like this - and the DVD is blank. I had to force quit as it would not respond.
I calmly tried again - same thing happened - it ejects the blank CD after encoding and freezes.
I decided to open a slightly different version of the iDVD project file I had also saved - and had the same problem....
So I tried to save a disc image instead - this time when I came back iDVD was gone - it had crashed and disappeared leaving no disc image.
I did some searching in this forum and I made some drive space and trashed my .plist files and repaired disc permissions.
I did another test burn this morning....SAME ISSUE - IDVD FROZE AND EJECTED THE BLANK DISC AFTER ENCODING....help! I have no idea what happened or what made it start behaving like this - I cant think of anything that changed on my system...and after all this work this bug has happened at the last hurdle....
    Thanks in advance...

ok - so after all the above tinkering and OSX update, plist trashing and permission repairing as well as shifting assets to an internal drive - I set the iDVD project (which had previously burned ok) to burn again - and lo and behold - after the encoding - the same thing happened again...
The project encoded - and then right at the end - it just ejected the blank CD and stopped...
here is a picture of the resulting iDVD screen.
As you can see - it just says 'done'. And the CD is sitting ejected and blank. The media is a fresh disc Verbatim +R DL. If I close the player nothing happens.
If I press the 'cancel' button iDVD says 'cleaning up' and just sits there doing nothing. It does not register as 'not responding' in the 'force quit application menu' - but nothing happens.
This is a real mystery to me. So frustrating I have the project finished! Something weird has happened...
Hi Rich...this project is a regular 4:3 PAL format.
I did try making a new project similar to the one Im trying to burn - and got the same result. Ditto with older versions of the project...
I have just run the Disc 1 hardware test - 'no trouble' result.
I am re-installing 'bundled software' from disc 1. Then I need to sleep and try burning again tomorrow...
    cheers

  • Combo won't read burned DVD

Hi, i know this is not new but since i can't find any solution and apple support prefer staying behind the scene, i posted my problem.
I have a DVD with all my works files which is burned at the office using PC. Once i was home, i tried to copy the files to my emac (1,25 GH, 512, Tiger 10.4.2). It works for a while and then it stopped and saying can't find xxxxx file which is actually in the dvd. So i tried a couple times and did not work. I rejected the dvd for the first time it won't come out and i restarted the emac so it came out. After i restarted the emac, the combo drive won't take any burned DVD anymore ( i have memorex DVD) but it can take any comercial DVD or CD, e.g i insterted the Tiger upgrade DVD and it works good or Adobe CS CDs it works good. I was cleaning the lens using Memorex lens cleaner, it still throws my burned DVD out after a few second.
So what should i do? is it software or hardware problem? hey apple guys where are you !

The Apple Discussions are peer-to-peer exchanges among Apple users; if you want to contact Apple Support, try the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the Discussions pages.
If you look over other posts in this forum, you'll notice a common current complaint involves using 8x DVD media; can you try using 4x media?
Also, there are differences between DVD-R and DVD+R media; for Ma cuse you'll generally want to use DVD-R.
As a general tip when burning CD-R or DVD-R on PCs to be read on other computers, burn the PC disc as a read-only (closed) disk. Leaving the disc appendable or multi-seeion capable can make it unreadable on other computers, even other PCs that don't have the exact version of the same burning software you used to create the disc. Finalizing or closing or making the dic read-only --- whatever the burner program calls that option, it tends to work better.
