Leave iPod plugged into usb on PC ?

Hi, this is my first iPod video, I have the new 30GB.
Anyway, do I just leave it plugged into the computer all the time when not in use? Even when itunes is not on the ipod flashes the "Do not disconnect" and the backlight stays on.
Is that ok?
Should i ejected it when not in use?
thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, there should be no harm done to your iPod leaving it plugged in all the time. I would though, let the battery discharge once and a while.
Hope this helps

Press and hold the power on button and the circle button on the front for about 10-15 seconds - If nothing try to plug in to the usb at the rear of the PC for more power and then try again.
    It will work.

That will degrade the battery. Apple recommends that you fully discharge and fully charge monthly.

  • Intel iMac won't boot up when iPod is plugged into USB port.

I have a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM and 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Purchased new from Apple in January 2007. Running Mac OS X 10.4.10. Purchased a new 80 GB video iPod (v1.2.1) from Best Buy in June. Computer stopped rebooting soon after. I began by deleting preferences of various kinds with no luck. I've reset the P RAM, the System Power Manager or whatever ya call it. I've even done an Archive Install of the Mac OS. Yet every time I try an' reboot with the iPod plugged into the USB port I get the start-up chime then the gray screen and that's it. No gray Apple, no log-in window. I shut it down, unplug the iPod and it starts right up. Please, I'm beggin' ya. I don't want to have to wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. Any suggestions?
    Thanks....

ABStrange -- the apple tech believes that the iMAC is trying to boot from the iPOD which is causing the hanging. Interestingly, if you wipe the iPOD clean, it will work flawlessly. The minute you put one song back on the iPOD it will hang again. Hopefully on Monday or Tuesday I'll hear something back. I'll let you know what I find out. I did mention this thread on the forum to the apple tech. Hopefully they take this seriously. Maybe it is a serious enough flaw with our iPODs that will warrant a replacement?
BTW: I upgraded to Leopard yesterday and the problem still exists. Was kind of curious to see if that had any effect.

  • I have an ipod classic 120 gb. I had music on my ipod that I had gotten from other people's itunes libraries by changing my settings to manually sync my ipod. However, twice I have had my ipod plugged into my mac and it completely erased everything

I have an ipod classic 120 gb. I had it set up so that I manually sync and manage my music. Twice I have had my ipod plugged into my mac and it had erased everything on my ipod. All the music on my itunes was still in my library, but all the other music was lost. I understand that I need to go back to the other libraries I got that music from, but how do I make sure that my ipod doesn't keep syncing and erasing itself? Also, now every five minutes a message will pop up on my itunes saying that it cannot sync because of an unknown error and then it has the number 13014. I have no idea what that is about. Does anyone else go through this? How do I fix it?

Well the iPod is supposed to be synced from YOUR iTunes music library, if you used other means to put music on there then the iPod is going to sync to only what's on your itunes music library when you connect it.
You need to put the files into itunes.
Far as your other issues, sounds like the drive is dying.

  • Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive?

Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive? Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't.  If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

Charge it with the supplied power brick plugged into the wall.
Most USB ports don't put out enough power for the iPad so the best way is plugged into the wall.

Yes. Charging automatically stops when your battery is full, & you can't overcharge.

Blackberry Does not Function, Plugged into USB red light then 3 yellow lights and off, I cannot even claim the warrently without buying 50$ support?
I am an Electrical Engineer by trade and have 15+ years working with computers. I left it to charge over the last 3 days. Doesn't do anything. It's a $300 paper weight. My mother bought this product for me because she thought it was a great present but now it turns out to being worthless.
What kind of company are you? Honestly?
How the hell do you think your gonna get customer loyalty with this kind of customer service. It's clearly obvious why apple is destroying you. You are worthless competition. I want this blackberry fixed. I will NOT pay for support just to replace my blackberry. That is crooked business honestly. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
My mom bought this for my birthday 4 months ago. I open it up and it doesn't even work. How can you do this to your customers. It's no wonder your company is going out of business.
I demand you fix my issue. I have 1 year of warranty support. I will NOT pay extra just to get my Blackberry exchanged.
Wait until I inform all my news groups in my area of this. I am from ONTARIO, BRAMPTON. I am a CANADIAN, just like your company. CP24 WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS. I WILL RUIN YOUR REPUTATION. I PROMISE YOU THAT.

One of my PlayBooks recently went 'possum on me, too. Very frustrated, tried all the known tricks and tips to charge and revive it. Over a year old. I called the support line knowing it was out of date and they would deny me.
Nope, the lady very pleasantly accepted my request, I spoke with customer support and they bugged me via email daily until we got it resolved -- to MY satisfaction. My first interaction with PlayBook support, and it could not have gone more nicely nor further beyond my expectation.
I don't know what you experienced with PlayBook support, you didn't say why you're so mad with them. This is a user-to-user community support forum. We are not RIM employees, but volunteers who enjoy assisting other users. RIM personnel rarely comment on queries posted here. You would have noticed this in the EULA and message upon registration.
Sooo... good luck, and just for the record... the LED activity you described IS very fixable. Sorry you don't have the choice to explore those remedies any longer.

  • IPod battery dies WHILE it is plugged into USB (highspeed 2.0) port

Hello thank you for your interest in my question, I apologize for the length but it's a very frustrating problem.
I am translating this question for my sister:
My 4th generation iPod was given to me as a gift this past December (2005) I believe it was purchased in September because that is when the warranty expires. The iPod worked fine for the previous owner using it with a Windows machine. Not knowing whether or not it will work with my iBook with or without formatting, I plugged it in and found that it came right up and I was able to put my music library on it.
I used it normally for the first time until the battery became low, so I plugged it into my USB port to charge. After a few hours I came back to find my battery completely drained and the iPod unresponsive/dead. I switched USB ports and let it sit for a couple of hours, nothing. I switched USB cables using one from another brand new/working iPod, nothing. I tried a different computer, one with a high-speed USB 2.0 port again leaving it plugged in for at least 4 hours, nothing.
Obviously something was wrong, so I filed a report and Apple sent a DHL box to mail it back. An iPod came back, unfortunately I'm not sure if it's the same one (I didn't follow the repair status or keep track of the serial numbers) it was restored to it's factory defaults and turned on right away.
SO round #2, I plugged it directly into my iBook and started to import songs onto it--this time I was there when it happened. It beeped at me and said something on the screen about the battery not having a sufficient charge and it went from the "do not un-plug/charging" screen to a big battery with a lightning bolt next to it. My iBook gave me a notice that the iPod was improperly disconnected. 30 minutes later the iPod had a blank screen (while still plugged in) and I went through the same troubleshooting I did before (switching cables/computers).
I sent it back to Apple and this time I followed the repair status. To my surprise, they found nothing wrong with it and sent the exact same iPod back. When I got it back the iPod did indeed turn on so I plugged it into the back of my brand new iMac Intel Core Duo, imported songs and tried to see if they would play. They did, but the battery was almost dead so I plugged it back in and left it charge for over 3 hours. I unplugged it and checked the stats.. it was nearly dead still, so I plugged it in again and very quickly (10 minutes) the icon changed from "charging" to full. I unplugged it to check the charge... and it was still nearly dead. Extremely frustrated at this point, I gave it to my friend with an older iMac (but with the latest iPod software installed) after plugging it in and leaving it alone for maybe an hour it beeped, when to the black and white battery and finally went blank/dead for the third time.
I'm desperate, right now it is plugged into a Windows PC to see if that will work and considering the iPod is still cold to the touch and wont respond.. it doesn't look good. Can anyone, after reading all of this, suggest anything? I'm probably going to be making an appointment at a genius bar but before I do, I'd like to see if anyone here might have some suggestions.
Please keep in mind, that the iPod is completely dead and will not charge or be recognized by any computer I plug it into. So I can't really restore or do many other basic troubleshooting. I have no idea how it turned on after sending it in for support.. but if anyone notices something I'm doing wrong, that might help.
    Thank you.
    iPod 4th Gen 20GB
Computers I've tried to revive it with:
    iBook G3 500Mhz OS 10.2.8
    iMac G3 500Mhz OS 10.3.9
iMac 1.8Ghz Core Duo OS 10.4.6
(home build) AMD core, Asus-SLi motherboard, Windows XP Home
iMac Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6)
iMac Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Have you tried connecting the iPod to different USB ports and/or another computer?
You can also take a look at this website, which may help figure out what's wrong with your iPod.

Finally, if your iPod is less than a year old, you can send it to Apple for replacement.

  • IPOD SHUFFLE PLUGGED INTO USB HUB BUT NOT BEING READ

I recently got a 4 port USB hub because I needed extra usb ports. I mainly use the hub to connect my flash drive, external hard drive and my IPOD shuffle, but the only thing that isn't getting read by the computer is the shuffle. Everything else that is conncected to the hub is being read by windows. The shuffle just sits there, when plugged into the hub, blinking a green light (which doesn't look normal). The hub itself is a 2.0 hub. HELP!

I had the same problem. FIRST, I had to remove the software that came with the original ipod shuffle. 2005/06/26, and replace it with the older version 2005/01/11 that I found on this site: http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/220012/apple-ipod-ipod-mini-ipod-photo-ipod-sh uffle-software-updater-2005-01-11-windows-2000-xp-free-download.html
Once in a while it still doesn't recognize the ipod, but I think that's a usb port problem. Unplug it and plug it in again and it should be fine. Just make sure you remove the original software first in the add/remove programs section!
Also, if Mac is so good (according to some people on this site), why did Mac start using the Windows XP software and not vice-versa!!! haha
    Good Luck!!!

  • IPod will not work unless plugged into USB iPod 4th Generation

I have just bought my first iPod and I cannot get it to work unless it is plugged into the computer. The battery says that it's charged but as soon as I unplug it from the computer I can't get it to turn on. Has anyone else had this problem. I am using plugs that I got when I purchased the iPod.

I had a similar issue. When I got my 16GB 4th Gen Nano, unless it was plugged into the USB port of my Mac, it would continually reboot. I might be able to get 2-3 clicks in while navigating the menua, but it would always reboot. If it was plugged in, worked great. I returned it and the new seems to be fine (other than Coverflow issues).
