Leave mac plugged in on sleep mode?
i just recently bought a macbook and have been reading about battery cycles and what not. just a quick question though.. is it better to leave my mac plugged in overnight while on sleep mode or should i just unplug it and plug it in again in when i use it the next day?
also, do i need to turn off my mac at night or is it safe to just leave it on sleep mode when i go to bed?
thanks!
No problem! Thanks for the star
Personally, I like to make sure my computer is sleeping before I head to bed, just in case; I've had a couple occasions where it didn't go into sleep mode properly & the fan kicked in at high speed due to excessive heat.

when I use I tunes radio, click pause, leave mac to go into sleep mode, return press play I tunes will not resatrt on same station. I have to pick another for a few seconds and then return to original. then it works ok.
not a big problem but its annoying. Any ideas ?
thanks very muchI lugged the G4 around town to three different computer repair shops, and they all confirmed that I had installed the fans correctly, and all fans were running fine. Of course, this only makes the problem harder to solve.
Furthermore, my friend was using the G4 last night when it was a cool 72 degrees (F) in his apartment, and the computer still forced itself into Sleep mode after just over an hour of use. He was using Final Cut Pro at the time, editing a project spread across two external FireWire hard drives. I just can't imagine this amount of activity overheating the G4, which was my editing workhorse for six years before handing it over to my friend.
When I replaced the cooling fans, I did select new fans with slightly lower airflow than the original fans (which many people have replaced, due to the amount of noise they produce). Any opinions on whether that could be the issue?
_Case fan:_
Original: 151.85 CFM airflow
Replacement: 109.6 CFM airflow
_Power Supply fans:_
Original: 38.1 CFM airflow
Replacement: 26.5 CFM airflow -
Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?
During sleep, your MacBook consumes a little part of the battery, so it won't harm leaving it in sleep mode. Also, you will be able to start using it quickly, as you don't need to wait until Mac OS X turns on.
I only recommend you to turn off the MacBook if you are not going to use it for days in order to save battery, but apart from that, you don't need to turn it off -
Mac shuts down in sleep mode.
This just started to happen to my mac pro quad intel running the latest SNOW software. My mac shuts down in sleep mode. I tried to zap pram, but it ill not allow me to do this.
I also check the internal battery using a small program and its a full charge. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thanks,
Tonygodlovestodance,
your Mid 2012 needs 1600 MHz memory modules. Is your currently installed RAM of this variety?
In your current setup, is it your 1 TB HDD or your 256 GB SSD that is in the optical drive bay?
One thing you can try is this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still crash because of an extended sleep? -
Safe to leave NEW macbook pro in sleep mode all day?
This is my first Macbook Pro and wonder if it's safe to leave this thing in sleep mode plugged in all day while at work? I did this w/my ibook but read some stories of the Macbook Pro catching fire??
What's going on with this rumor?
Thanks!I did this w/my ibook but read some stories of the Macbook Pro catching fire??
You're probably referring to PowerBooks equipped with the faulty Lithium-ion batteries from Sony ? I haven't been around lately but I've never heard of Macbook Pros catching fire. The MBPs use Lithium polymer batteries that don't contain the flammable organic solvents found in Lithium-ion batteries.

Why does my mac mini shutdown during sleep mode?
After I put the Mini into sleep mode, it shuts itself off after a few hours. I tried resetting the SMC per instructions from another forum post (turn the Mini off; pull the power cord for 10 seconds; plug back in; wait 5 seconds; turn the Mini back on) but that didn't work. Anything else I can try?
Thanks,
iBob52I have the same problem. When only the screen is sleeping, everything is ok. When the MacMini begins to sleep, he just shuts off. Help someone ?

Mac mini keeps entering sleep mode
Hi. I have a Mac mini that has this annoying problem where it keeps
wanting to enter sleep mode. This problem seemed intermittent at first.
What I notice is that my mini would enter sleep mode whenever I try to
encode mp3. This seems reproducible. When it enters sleep mode,
I can wake it up by pressing the power button. However, it goes back
in sleep mode after a couple seconds after it wakes up. The only way
I can get it out of sleep mode is to quit iTunes and eject the audio
CD.
Things I've tried:
Energy Saver settings: Computer sleeps after 3 hours inactivity,
display sleeps after 3 hours inactivity, unchecked "Put hard disk(s)
to sleep when possible". I tried disabling energy save. No luck.
I also tried to uncheck "Allow Nap" box in the Processor settings.
However, it always checks this after a reboot.
If I insert a DVD movie, I can watch it w/o any interruption.
Anyone else seen this problem? Thanks in advance.
JimHi Carl. I was unable to find com.apple.AutoWake.plist in my
system. Deleting com.apple.PowerManagement.plist didn't
help.
I decided to try your open firmware instructions. I like the
boot loader. It reminds me of the Sun's boot monitor.
I did the reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all. It didn't
help though.
I don't think it is my power supply, either. The reason why I
don't think this is the problem is I can watch DVD and listen
to audio CD just fine. My sleep problem would only occur
when I try to rip an audio CD. I can assure you that I draw
plenty of power just playing a DVD movie.
My guess is I have a power management configuration
issue or a hardware problem. Since this has a Unix core
underneath, I started poking around in the usual places
for log files. I found the familiar /var/log and stumbled
on system.log. Looking at the file, I found something
that caught my eye.
Aug 17 01:06:19 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Doing a 'grep overtemp system.log', I got the following:
Aug 17 01:04:13 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 17 01:04:37 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 17 01:04:56 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.

Aug 17 01:05:51 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 17 01:06:00 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 17 01:06:13 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 17 01:06:19 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
If you look at the time stamp, you'll see that each event
is only a few seconds apart. This matches with what
I was seeing. Machine goes to sleep. I press the power
button and it wakes up and goes back to sleep. One
big endless cycle. The only way I managed to get out
of it is to quit iTunes and to eject the CD.
Yes, I did install the Xcode 2 development kit that came
with the Mini MAC OSX setup. I eventually want to write
software for the Mac. So, I most likely installed the
CHUD tools package that you had mentioned.
I think the equivalent command line command for
disabling the nap feature is 'hwprefs -v cpu_nap=false'.
When I do that, I get the overtemp event and my mini
goes to sleep. Zzz.
In any case, my mini seems to be detecting false overtemp
condition. Either I have a bad temp sensor or my power
management overtemp threshold is set way too low. It's
possible encoding audio CDs is enough to heat up the
PPC core, but it happens way too fast. I'm thinking my
temperature sensors are not set correctly. If anyone has
schematics for the mini, it would most likely be a Dallas
temp sensor chip. I'm not ready to open up my mini yet
since it is still under warranty. I'll take it in the Apple
store in Walnut Creek this weekend.
Anyway, thank you guys for all your help. I found my
experience on this forum to be quite pleasant. People
here are very helpful.
Jim -
Mac Pro clicking in sleep mode.
After a while in sleep mode there is a clicking noise coming from the box. It stops when I wake up the machine. HD appears ok (Disk utility repaired some errors, appears ok now). There was an earlier issue which I suspected to be power related, powered off without warning, would not power on. Had to removed the power cord to stop clicking. When power cord inserted there was a red light showing through the case. These issues seem to have gone away but still leave the clicking after a while in sleep mode. Can only find some info on resetting the SMC but not sure if this would be correct thing to do?
Took mine to a dealer for testing, they couldn't make it happen. Started clicking 10 minutes after connecting it back in my studio. Accidently caught the USB lead from the computer to a powered hub, this switched everything off and I noticed an arching sound from the hub. Replaced the powered USB hub and have not had a problem since.
I was amazed that a USB lead and hub could cause such an issue which appeared to be with the computer itself. -
Mac Pro unexpectedly enters sleep mode
Ok so I installed Leopard last weekend on my Mac Pro and all initially went well with the install. After installation was done, software update appeared and stated I had approximately 4 downloads to install. So I had done this and prepared to reboot. Before rebooting, a window appeared stating that it needed to update the Boot cache. So I clicked on "OK" and the computer went into its shutdown sequence. When the computer reset, I noticed there was no start up chime and the system just sat there with a black screen. I thought perhaps it was updating the boot cache and it may take a while to finish. So I went afk for about an hour and came back. Still nothing. This is when I knew there was something seriously wrong with my system.
After speaking with Apple support and trying several things to get it to boot, the support rep stated that it will need to go into the shop for repairs. I had taken it to an authorized service center and they diagnosed the problem as a bad logic board. They had replaced this and had ran their diagnostic tools on it to make sure it was running normally. They kept it overnight and ran Apple Service diagnostics in a repeating loop on the system. They had also cold booted the system 30+ times per the work order.
After I brought it home and booted it, everything was seemingly running fine. Then I received a page from work (I'm a support rep) which required me to boot into Windows using Boot Camp to solve a client's problem. After I had done this, I booted Leopard back up and was playing around in it for a few minutes to check out some of the new features. I had then ran World of Warcraft to play a bit and to check out the performance increase in Leopard. After about 5 minutes of playing, my system unexpectedly entered sleep mode. Obviously I was confused so I had brought it out of sleep mode by hitting the enter key. The system came back for about 2 seconds and immediately went back into sleep mode again. This happened about 4 or 5 times before I finally shut the system down.
The first thing I did after reboot is to check the energy saver options. Both hard drive and monitor energy options were set to "Never". I then checked for software updates. There was both an SMC firmware update and a Boot Camp EFI(?) firmware update. I had done the SMC firmware update first and then after successfully updating this, I had done the Boot Camp firmware update. After reboot, the system went into sleep mode on its own approximately 5 minutes after reboot. This time I had made sure NOT to run my game as I had a suspicion that this could be causing the problem. It entered sleep mode anyway unexpectedly. After waking it up again by hitting the enter key, the desktop appeared again for about 2 seconds before going right back into sleep mode. I called the service center again and they said I would have to bring it in for them to look at. Needless to say, I am NOT very pleased.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this happening with a Mac Pro? I had never had any problems when I was running Tiger with any application, not even my game. The service rep where I took it said it was just bad timing that the logic board went during my OS upgrade and that the two had nothing to do with each other. My brother has a Mac Pro as well and he had upgraded to Leopard. Of course his computer works fine where mine is a sleeping fool. Does anyone have any ideas or theories as to what could be causing this? More importantly, does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to fix this on my own? If you could please let me know, I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your time.Wow, who are you dealing with? The first time my logic board was replaced, the techs never bothered with looking at anything else as being the problem. However, when I pointed out the power supply fan problem, they focused on that being the cause of the problem and fixed just that. I was somewhat concerned as I know some of these techs do not look at other parts of the machine as potential problem causers. I was afraid that I would hook up my system only to experience the same problem as before. Luckily, that was not the case.
I am glad that your system appears to have the same problem as mine did. I would suggest that if you take it back to them again for a fan fix to have them run the system for about an hour after replacing it. They should be opening apps, checking the iStat widget, etc to try and make it break. If they can't after an hour or so, I think it should be ok.
This whole ordeal makes me question the quality of parts used by Apple. My brother has an iMac G4 where the hard drive died after 2 months of getting it new. Now this issue with mine and yours with the bad logic board and the power supply fan. Who knows how many other customers report hardware related problems? -

Help! Got a kernel panic while my 2014 Mac pro was in sleep mode.
I'm having weird issues with my new mac pro while connected to the pegasus2 r4, via thunderbolt. I suspect the issue is related to conflicting power management settings from my pegasus vs the mac pro. Following the advice from pegasus, I turned off the promise utility power management settings. I noticed the external drives would turn on spin up once every hour for one minute while in sleep mode. I assume this is a typical behavior of the "power nap" setting being on. What do you guys think?
Occasionally, while my external drives would spin up in sleep, I'll have a kernel panic that will reboot my computer. Is this due to power nap or the pegasus drives?and here mis my kernel panic log

How do I keep my Mac from going from sleep mode to shut off mode?
Sometimes when I open my Mac it takes several minutes to get to the login screen. How do I keep it just in sleep mode? Or is that not possible? Thanks,
BayBay,
if it takes several minutes for your Mac to get to a login screen, then it sounds like that should be the problem to be addressed. Which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of OS X is installed on it? -
External usb disc used for Time Machine backup disconnects when Mac has been into sleep mode
I use a 1Tb External usb disc used for Time Machine backup which works fine, but when the Mac goes into sleep mode & powers back on I get a message stating that you should always eject the Drive before removing.
Any suggestions on how to get around this problem would be welcomeLook at the root of your hard drive for a folder called Backups.backupdb.
Or, a sparse bundle disk image for one of mobile computers that might have tried to back up to your Mac.
If you have those, remove them and try again. -
Internet not working after MAC book goes into sleep mode
If my mac book goes to sleep or if i close it when i wake it up/open it the internet doesnt work, usually have to restart it or wait several minutes in order for the internet to come back any way to fix this problem?
Safari, Firefox will all open up; we're talking specifically about airport. It will not automatically connect to my home's wireless network once I wake it from sleep. Actually it will not even pick up or recognize any other close by networks. When you click on the airport symbol to get the drop down menu, the only option that is there is 'other'.
Once I wake it, I will leave it there for about ten minutes and when I come back it has finally picked up the other networks and I am able to connect to my home's wireless network. -
