Leave plugged in or run down?

I just got a new battery because my old battery didn't hold a charge like it used to...
Anyways, in hopes to make my new battery last longer, should I constantly take it through load cycles? For example, when my battery is fully-charged, should I unplug the power cord and take the battery to 0 % or should I leave it plugged in and at 100 % ?
I've heard both, so I thought I would come here to find out.

I would say that you can keep the Mac plug in for all times. Just make sure that you get the battery some exercise at least once every 2 to 3 weeks. By that I mean use the computer on battery. And you should also let the battery run down to 0% then recharge it back to 100% every 2 to 3 month. There are also suggestions to keep your battery healthy longer at the MacBook Pro's support site. Might want to check that out.

  • Leave it in the cradle or let it run down?

I've not been leaving my iPhone in the cradle (even when it's plugged into the computer, not the power strip) as I figured it's good for the battery to get low.
I'm wondering, though, if the collective wisdom is to keep it in the cradle and maybe once a week let it run down and out.
    Any thoughts?

Do a couple of searches- this topic has been addressed a lot. The lithium battery is "good" for 300-400 full charges (ie completely draining your battery). After that, it starts to loose some of its staying power. Basically, you do not want to completely drain and then recharge each time. But it's fine to just charge it ever night- assuming again that you are not draining your battery completely during the day. Also, costs $80+ to have Apple replace the battery- can't do it yourself.

  • What is this all about? "The "QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6" plug-in is slowing down your Mac. You can wait for it to recover or stop it now."  I'm running Mavericks 6.8.

I regularly get a prompt reading as follows: "The "QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6" plug-in is slowing down your Mac. You can wait for it to recover or stop it now."  I've tried waiting, but nothing happens.  I "stop it now" and lose the page I'm reading.

  • Leave plugged in Ethernet interface disabled (down) [solved]

Is it possible to keep a plugged in Ethernet interface down by default at boot? I have a USB Ethernet adapter I'd like to keep down until needed. Despite not having an IP, it is automatically activated and up at boot up (it is a spanned port).
The ipv6 stack is in the kernel but not used for interfaces, udev renames the device, and nothing is configured for it in NetworkManager (although have tried to manage it this way to avail). dhcp shouldn't be a problem, unless I'm missing something that is pre-configured by default?
The only solution I can think of is to blacklist the module, which would allow me to probe it when needed to bring it up (there is also the physical side of doing this as well). The only drawback is these aren't the most efficient ways to manage an interface.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Standard NICs are kept down unless configured (eg. with netctl, etc). My net2 is plugged into a switch:

  • Memory content lost when the battery runs down

My computer sometimes saves memory content when the battery runs down, as it is supposed to, so that when it restarts it is restored to the state it was in,  but at other times it does not.
Is there a way to find out why this is and fix it?

    Thanks for the reply.
Doesn't Apple recommend that you do exercise the battery by using its full capacity? They even recommend running it down from full until the computer saves the contents of memory to the special file, then leaving it 5 hours before charging fully again.
I have never heard of the 20% threshold before.
The odd behaviour in my case is that the computer sometimes does what is should: saves the memory then shuts down and when started restores that data, but at others does not save the data first, and starts up normally when I plug in the power and switch on.

  • Computer Acts Like I Let the Battery Run Down

When I put my MacBook Pro to sleep OR leave it to go to sleep on its own, often (but not always) it acts like I ran the battery down - in other words, I get the start-up sound (not the music but the little electronic movement sound) and the greyed screen with the line of white ovals at the center bottom which count up as the computer wakes itself up.
This problem began soon after I got my MacBook (almost 2 years) and has gotten worse. It used to be only occassional and was, of course, hard to replicate on demand. Now it's very often. (Every other day?) I took it into the MacStore before the year support was up and the girl looked at all sorts of stuff but couldn't find the problem. She made a few setting adjustments or whatever and said to see if it got better and, if not, to spend some time taking notes to see if I could better localize when it happens and if I still found nothing than to reinstall the OS X.
It was a little better for a bit it seemed, but built up to being more common again. It defintely happens when I use the computer on battery if I let it run down to anywhere about 23% or lower. But it also happens (often) when it's plugged in at my desk and I put it on sleep for the night, so at full battery.
Eventually I rebuilt without erasing, then - when still no improvement - I did a full erase and reinstall from Time Machine back-up (in case there's an answer there). I also upgraded to Mavericks. The problem was totally unaffected by the rebuilds or the upgrade. I have looked again at energy saving and see nothing unusual in my options. (Battery: Display to sleep after 5 minutes, computer to sleep after 10. Put hard disk to sleep when possible. Power adaptor: the same setting except 10min and 10 minutes.)
Any idea what the heck is going on?

    Hi RobRZ -
So first of all, sorry for dragging my feet on doing this. I saw all the article chat about changing setting in terminal and presumed I was going to go in there and end up changing something. But in the end I jsut put in the first command ot check the hibernation mode and, well, it says "hibernate 3" - safe sleep.
So, that would indicate that my computer is already, according to Terminal, programmed to do something different than what it's actually doing. Right?
If it's a clue to what's happening: I tried soemthing different (again?I'm sure I'd done this before but didn't get consistent results) the last few days, unplugging my computer before I go to bed. Once it made the "electronic movement" (harddrive?) sound when I unplugged it, but woke right up in the morning. The last 2-3 nights I have unplugged it, to no computer noises, and it woke up just fine in the morning.
So, running the battery to below 20% causes it and, perhaps, leaving it plugged in when it's fully charged causes it?

  • I want to run down how dissatisfied I currently am with Verizon Wireless

I want to run down how dissatisfied I currently am with Verizon Wireless; this stated with the pre-order of the iPhones on Friday I like many other customers received the "ecdp" error on the web site and it took 45 minutes to actually be able to place the order.  I got the order in and had a 09/19/2014 ship date; spoke with a few Customer Service Reps in various areas such as 611, on many of the 800 numbers available, Internet Orders (including a Supervisor) and even a Social Media Service Rep all who have confirmed this ship date to be accurate.
Well today (09/17/2014) I check the Pre-Order Status page and my date has been changed to 10/14/2014 so I call in to speak to Internet Orders and the Rep advises me that yes my date was pushed back but no reason is supplied, I asked to speak to a Supervisor and was transferred to Howard, Operator # 2431235, who stated that yes the prior rep was accurate and that there was no reason available as to why my ship date changed.  Howard continues by stating that as per upper management, Apple reported to Verizon that no iPhone 6+'s would be available at launch for Verizon to ship and that this has been common knowledge, within the company, that the 6+'s were not shipping until 10/14/2014, and that prior Verizon employee's to include supervisors were misinforming me of my shipping date.  Howard continued to state that the reason I got the "ecdp" error was because of the company that I work for as Verizon offers a discount so the 'ecdp" error is not something Verizon is currently addressing.  Howard then tells me not to worry that with the 10/14 date is a guaranteed delivery date and not to worry, if the phones come in early the order will be filled, I at this point ask Howard to note my account with our conversation to include the fact that he stated the 10/14 was a guaranteed date, at this point he states that while he is telling me this he will not put it in writing as at that point Verizon would be obligated to meet that date at minimum and he was not willing to put his position on the line if the phone is not shipped by that date(this can be confirmed by reviewing the recording of the call as I was advised that I was on a recorded line).  I then asked to speak to his supervisor and was told his supervisor went home for the day and that he was the highest level supervisor on at this time.  When I then asked for his supervisors contact information to lodge a complaint he said that I would need to call back in on 611 from my handset as Customer Service handles complaints not supervisors.
I did call back and speak with a Representative on 611 who tried to assist but was not able to do much, this rep took my information and is having their supervisor call me to try addressing the way Howard handled the call however this has not occurred at the time of this writing.  I did tell this rep that I was honestly considering going to another carrier, (I have been with Verizon 7-8 years and currently have 10 lines of service on my account) I know I will not get the iPhone 6+ on launch day with another carrier which was not the driving factor but rather the way Howard dealt with the situation and the lack of respect that as a customer of Verizon I have always got from other representatives, as you know it takes one person to sour someone on a whole company, Howard even stated that if I want to go to another carrier that was fine with him.  However, the Customer Service Rep I spoke with after Howard (I wish I could remember his name) calmed me down not to leave Verizon but did agree that a complaint needed to be filed, personally I would like to file it directly with an Associate Vice President or higher but do understand that there is a “Chain of Command” that needs to be filed
Let this be a warning to anyone who call internet sale and gets Howard, operator #2431235, I would suggest you immediately request a different supervisor that will treat you with respect.  As stated above Howard will tell you that the iPhone 6+ was not and has never been available to ship on launch day due to Apple purposely not providing enough units to meet the demand and that Verizon knew this while taking our pre-orders.

I feel your pain Robert. I do believe VZW and Apple knew all along the I6 Plus would not be available on 19 Sep and that it was a way to bolster new contracts, renewed contracts and apple sales stats. It's unfortunate the company wasn't more clairvoyant, most of us would have still pre-ordered but been a little less frustrated.

  • HP Laserjet 4P has a 1" toner stain that runs down the left side of page.(front and back)

    Hello all,
This is my first post here and I hope someone can help me.
We have a HP Laserjet 4P that we have used for a few years and recently have had a problem of a 1" toner stain that runs down the left side of the printed page(both front and back side). I have replaced the cartride and cleaned everything I know to clean. When I remove the cartridge, there is a little pile of toner on the left side just in front of the horizontal silver bar that is behind the roller. I have cleaned it up several times. Each time I try to print, The toner stain appears on the printed page again and leaves a new pile of toner in the same place.
Does anyone have any experience with this problem? I am not sure if it is a worn part or a maintenance issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Why is battery running down so quickly on IPad mini

My battery runs down to 31%within 4 hours of use. I play a few games of candy crush, check mail and do a few Internet searches. iPad is less than 6 months old. Anyone with similar problems or suggestions?

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • My iPhone 3GS battery is running down too quickly

In the last few days, my iPhone has started running down *very* quickly. I have been running iOS 6.1 for ages without any problems. Could this all of a sudden cause problems like this?
I have disabled mobile data and 3GS and just left the clock, calendar and reminders running, but this has not helped. It was 100% charged when I went to sleep last night, and when I woke up this morning it was down to 20%.
Can anyone advise me on a way to fix this please?

Really... took me all of a minute to find http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802 which reveals:
    Battery life seems short
Note: Charging with a FireWire-based power source is not supported, except on original iPhone.
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning  iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a   computer, don't connect iPhone to   a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.

  • Tungsten E2 back light won't go off and teh battery runs down quickly

I have no idea exactly when this started but I noticed the back light stays on after I try to turn it off and my Palm runs down very quickly. I did the soft reset several times, it comes back on and then flickers after I turn it off until the back light just stays lit. After reading several posts, I've done a hard reset and wiped out all of my data, re synched it and it still keeps happening. Other than that, all of the programs work but I must plug it in for recharge every day or it runs down. I let it completely die for a couple of days and the back light comes back on the minute I plug it back in even when it doesn't have enough charge to turn on. It is toast?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum!
Is the new battery that you're referring to an original one, or the third party replacement?
Can you borrow another battery somewhere and check whether the issue persists?

  • Frozen ipod, battery won't run down

    ok here's the problem
    1. the buttons won't work
    2. when i hook it up to my computer, it doesn't show up
    3. the battery won't run down, so it's stuck on and i can't do anything.
any ideas??? please help. i have no idea what to do!!!!!!

I'm not sure the 5Rs apply here. This happens to me every once in a while on my 3G/40GB. Absolutely no response, and no way to reset or restore. But the battery does run down because the screen stays on and I think even the hard drive is spinning. This runs the battery down, it quits, and the screen goes blank. After this, I can plug it in, it starts up again and then recharges. No music or files lost, and it works fine afterwards. I've tried resetting, restoring software, and reloading all the music. Still happens, but only every few months.

  • HT2188 IPHONE 4S BATTERY RUNNING DOWN QUICKLY

iPhone 4s battery suddenly runs down in under 2 hours of non-active (standby) use.  No idea why, this just started happening a few days ago - no new apps put in to cause this, all location services turned off, no push mail -- have done all the standard checks.  Also, the battery isn't accepting a charge from outlets plugged into the wall (only ones into the computer)--I get the lightning bolt signal at the top right, but the charge simply continues to drop.  Anyone have similar issues?

Take it to an Apple Store to be checked out.
