Leave your Mac On or Shut it Down???...What the Genius Say?

Hi Guys!!!!!
What do you think about leaving your Mac On or shut it down when you are not using it????
Thanks.

Hi,
Sleep mode has to supply power to the RAM memory in order to facilitate rapid wake-up. On the MacBook, safe sleep is the default mode. The MacBook will wake itself up when the battery gets low, then save the memory image to a disk file before the battery runs out.
In another thread, the same question came up. Users reported sleep would use about 4% of the battery every day. That seems very reasonable since a lithium ion battery will often discharge a few percent per day just sittig doing nothing.
I turn my MacBook off when I am not using the MacBook. I am impressed at how quickly the MacBook boots up rom being totally off. If you are a heavy duty multitasking person, the obvious advantage of sleep is the applications you were usng last time are open with the files you were woking on already open when you wake up the machine.
If you worry about wearing out the battery, you can change the sleep mode with the command line tool called pmset. You can use pmset to set the default sleep mode to always deep sleep to disk. The disadvantage of deep sleep is it takes longer to wake up, but is does reduce unnecessary battery use.
This thread discusses the use of pmset:

Your computer will not overcharge, even when off. If the battery is sufficiently low, it will top off the battery and stop charging. By morning, the light will be green because it is done charging.
There is no need to disconnect the power when you shut it off. The SMC microcontroller will continue to supervise charging the battery, even when the main processor is shut down.

  • Mac Book Pro shut itself down during operating

my MacBookPro always shut itself down whenever the power cable is unplugged, so what's wrong with it? (it is not about running out of battery) please give me any advices.

To check, perhaps the simplest way is to click on the apple icon on the top left and access the menu item, About this Mac. There are two buttons: click the bottom one, "More Info...". That will open System Profiler (also in the Application>Utilities folder). On the left of the panel that opens in System Profiler, in the Hardware section, is the item, Power. Highlight that and an information panel will show and that will give you lots of battery information. The real part you want is "Health Information": cycle count and condition.
To calibrate, plug in the power cord and fully charge the computer/battery until the light changes to green. It should remain charged for at least 2 hours (you can use it while it is plugged in). Then disconnect and use it with battery only and keep on using it -- ignore any warnings -- until it goes to sleep (if your battery is not allowing this, then it is pretty much dead). Then turn it off or allow it to sleep for 5 hours or more, then reconnect the power cord until it is fully charged. You can find this information by accessing the Help menu at the top of the Finder screen and typing in "Battery Calibration."
I hope for your sake that you are within the 12 month warranty period and it has not been abused. It is possible that these batteries can die before that time.

  • Leaving your mac on during the day

    hi
i am a teacher and i turn my laptop on first thing in the morning and then leave for maybe 10 hours or more. is it best for me to turn off my laptop or just let it go to sleep? it is worth noting that i turn my laptop on as soon as i get home and then before i go to bed....is all that restarting hard on it?
and, sometimes when i let my laptop sleep---for just a few hours (like 1-2 hours)--it won't wake up and i need to push the power button to turn it off and restart it. is that a weird glitch or a symptom of a problem? please let it be a glitch! lol
    thank you!

i don't leave it running during the day--i turn it off before i leave for work. then when i get home i turn it on and then off before i go to bed.
i 'heard' somewhere that it's better to leave your computer on than to restart it all the time. i was wondering if i should do something different.
i guess i'll have to call tech about the sleep issue. sigh.

    Hi daveormond,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. If you continue to have issues with your Mac shutting down part way through the boot up process, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful (given your description, it sounds like it could be either issue, or a combination of both):
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support

  • What do you do if your Mac Book video card does not meet the Minimum requriements ???

What if your Mac Books video card does not meet the minimum system requirements

Just for the record it was an Early 2008 iMac 20" (MB324LL/A) with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB of GDDR3 memory in it.
Not sure why or how but overnight the system has decided to try and run the update again and this time it has updated all the apps.
The machine is running the apps fine and there are no real issues with the performance (other than the fact its over 5 years old, but thats understandable).
Im going to put it down to either a minor glitch in the update that was corrected fairly fast or just a hiccup from an old machine.
Thansk for the responces anyhow guys.

  • I dropped my macbook pro off my couch and when it landed it was shut, i opened it and it was on a grey sceen so i shut it down with the button and when i turned it back on it was kind of slow but not anymore i just want to know if i should be worried

i dropped my macbook pro off my couch and when it landed it was shut, i opened it and it was on a grey sceen so i shut it down with the button and when i turned it back on it was kind of slow but not so much anymore. i quit all of my applications before i shut down and i noticed that when there are no more things t quit and i click "hide finder" its not grey anymore it still gives me the option to hide it when i dont need to, little things bug me and i just got this laptop, i just want to know if i should be worried

I suggest you immediately make a backup of your data. You don't know if or when the computer will show some symptoms from the drop. You may want to, for piece of mind, take the computer to an authorised service center for assessment. No one here can assess any internal damage you may have done.

Words with friends won't open on my IPad, it just shuts back down, what can I do to fix this?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • Just tried installing an update to OS.  Although the screen tells me that the installation will be completed in less than one minute, that was two hours ago, and the computer won't permit me to shut it down via the power button, as I get an error sound.

Just tried installing an update to OSX Snow Leopard.  Prior to trying to update OS, I was running V 10.6.3.  During installation, it locked up.  Although the screen tells me that the installation will be completed in less than one minute, that was two hours ago, and the computer won't permit me to shut it down via the power button, as I get an error sound.  What do I do now?  Help!

Hold the power key till it shuts down, it may take a little while, try holding it thru the warning.
Then if it shuts down restart and open Safari/Preferences, General tab, and set "Save Downloaded Files to:"
Select desktop, if desktop is not available in the the drop down menu, click other, then select Desktop from the column from the on the left.
    Then download this:

This will download the "stand alone installer"
Click on the installer pkg and follow the prompts.
    Hope this helps

  • What does Apple mean by "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete."

I just recently returned an IPad air and exchanged it for another. I first set up this new one as a new IPad but then deleted all content and settings right away (since I wasn't getting the progress I had made in apps and games) in order to restore it from my previous IPad Air. I then checked after on how to backup via icloud and saw this line under the subtitle of how to restore from a backup, "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete." What does Apple mean by "for best battery performance"? Im just a bit worried of issues.
p.s. And yes I did have it connected to the power. And the ios is the default ios for new IPad Airs.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It only means you should restore whilst it is connected to a power supply, so that your battery doesn't go flat during the process.

  • I always put asleep my mac but never shut it down, will this damage it?

Does never shutting down the computer damage it?

Never shutting down your Mac does not damage it in any way.
I suggest you Restart it at least quarterly, so that problems that may have developed (if any) can be eliminated by re-loading the Operating System and "starting over".
