Leaving computer in Sleep mode?

Hi,
As quite new to the world of computers, a simple question.
Which is the better mode for a computer to be left in for a few days?
a) Leave the Mac in Sleep
or
b) Shut down

Sleep.
Shutting down a Mac is never required. It is best to let it sleep, unless you are planning to not use it for a period of time considerably longer than a few days.

  • Computer enters sleep mode shortly after leaving sleep mode. Defect?

I have a problem. It's not a serious problem, but since it seems to be hardware related it might cause problem in the future.
It's pretty simple. Let's say I fold the computer screen down and leave the computer in sleep mode. If I then fold it up again it will automatically enter sleep mode once again 25-30 seconds after waking up. It doesn't matter what I do. I can be completely passive or open any app and move the cursor as much as I like. After roughly 30 seconds the screen turns black and I have to press a key to wake it up.
It never enters sleep mode any other time if I don't choose so, it's always after being in sleep mode already. And it happens 80-90% of the time, but I have not noticed a pattern for when it doesn't.
Naturally my settings are in order. I just updated it today and no difference after one attempt with the new OS version.
    Any ideas?

It will not harm your computer to allow it to "sleep" 24/7 and wake it up as needed.

please start firefox in safemode (by pressing the shift-key while it is launching) & go to ''firefox > options > advanced > general'' & disable hardware acceleration.

You are still under warranty if your iPod is "new."  Take full advantage of it by either calling iPod tech support, Apple Care if you have it or take it in to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • Everytime I wake up my computer from Sleep Mode the sound starts to crackle on my X-Fi?

Sometimes I'll be playing a song and a few seconds in it starts to crackle and distort the music. I notice that it only happens after my computer wakes up from sleep mode. Usually restart can fix the problem.

Okay, I seem to have solved the problem I posted about earlier.  I noticed that the language preference in the upper right hand corner of the screen (between the date and time and the Spotlight icon) had somehow gotten switched from American English to French.  When I switched it back to American English, my password worked when waking the computer from sleep mode.  I have no idea why changing the language preference would affect the way the password works but that seems to have been the case.  I'll post again if I experience more problems.

  • Since upgrading to LionEvery time I wake the computer from sleep mode I have to wait several minutes until the computer connects to the Internet

Since upgrading to LionEvery time I wake the computer from sleep mode I have to wait several minutes until the computer connects to the Internet

I have found that Lion is slower to connect to WiFi when awakening than were previous Mac OS X versions.  However, the WiFi connection usually takes less than 15 seconds unless a Time Machine backup was interrupted when my computer was put to sleep.  When this happens and the computer awakens, the Time Machine backup attempts to continue prior to the WiFi connection having been made.  Until the Time Machine backup fails due to its inability to connect to my Time Capsule because of no WiFi connection, or I stop it manually, the WiFi connection will not occur.  So if Time Machine backups are on, you may be experiencing this bug which I have reported to Apple.

  • Should I put my computer in sleep mode instead of just closing the lid?

I want to ensure that I am not increasing the liklihood of malfunction my simply closing the lid.

Both ways are acceptable.  Read your user manual that came w/your computer regarding "sleep."

Did Apple or anybody ever fix this issue? My computer has been on for 3 years without sleep.

Likely is the Video card, but...

  • Encore cs5 putting computer in sleep mode

    hey all
new to the forum and need a little help please
i recently updated my creative suite cs3 to the new masters cs5
i'm more a photographer and don't do a lot of video.
I recently have decided to teach myself wih alot of help from tutorials to use premiere pro and encore.
i have managed to make a project with premiere that i'm happy with and i simply wanted to export to dvd
so i send it to encore put the project in the timeline and set the end action to chapter one.
next i choose build and check the settings i want.
now after about 3-5 minutes of encore doing it's thing the computer simply goes to sleep and no way to wake it up.
i have set all my power options on hard disc, monitor, cpu etc. to never go to sleep and it still happens
i even let it run while doing other things on the computer and it still goes to sleep.
    my machine
    windows 7 x64
    intel i7
    nvidia 9800gtx+
    12gb ram
    WD raptor hard drive
i'd like to think that my computer specs are reasonable and shouldn't be causing the problem.
i'll also mention that the CS5 suite was installed on a clean windows installation.
would really apretiate any help as this is driving me crazy. I did a google search but didnt find any answers with my problem.
Found a lot of discussions about encore not launching and crashing but i dont have that issue...just the darned thing going to sleep
    thanks in advance

Though written more for NLE work, than authoring, there are strong similarities between the two operations, this ARTICLE might offer some tips on getting one's machine ready for the intense work required from either editing or authoring.
Now, and with that said, John T's comment on heat buildup is the most common cause of such issues. One little utility that might be of help is SpeedFan, linked in this ARTICLE (along with some other great utilities). I would also look into addressing any/all cooling issues. Things like dust buildup, lack of proper fans, lack of proper air-flow, etc., can be major contributors and MUST be addressed. Within logical levels, one can never have their computer run too cool.
Other possible causes can be bad RAM (there are RAM testing utilities in that linked article), or a PSU that is too weak, improperly hooked up, or going bad, or a MoBo going bad.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - along with those tutorials, I have one recommendation: Jeff Bellune's great book, The Focal Easy Guide to Adobe EncoreDVD 2.0, Focal Press. He covers about 95% of all that you will need to know with Encore. The only omissions will be BD and ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link), as they were added later. Still, that book will become your prime reference. Amazon has it, and should be available in OZ, though I do not know that for a fact.

  • Leave mac plugged in on sleep  mode?

i just recently bought a macbook and have been reading about battery cycles and what not. just a quick question though.. is it better to leave my mac plugged in overnight while on sleep mode or should i just unplug it and plug it in again in when i use it the next day?
also, do i need to turn off my mac at night or is it safe to just leave it on sleep mode when i go to bed?
    thanks!

No problem! Thanks for the star
Personally, I like to make sure my computer is sleeping before I head to bed, just in case; I've had a couple occasions where it didn't go into sleep mode properly & the fan kicked in at high speed due to excessive heat.

  • Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

Is it better to leave your macbook pro in sleep mode during the night or have it shutdown all night?

During sleep, your MacBook consumes a little part of the battery, so it won't harm leaving it in sleep mode. Also, you will be able to start using it quickly, as you don't need to wait until Mac OS X turns on.
I only recommend you to turn off the MacBook if you are not going to use it for days in order to save battery, but apart from that, you don't need to turn it off
