Led#4 yellow light on Powermac g5 Quad 2

Hello,
I have this mac that would not start. When I click the power button, it gives me a clicking sound and does not do anything. The yellow light on led 4 is lit up. It says to adjust and check the air deflector, i reseated the deflector and same results. I also tried to just remove the RAM one at a time and check if it's a bad memory and does the same thing.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Helmut

Hello,
I replaced the air deflector and looks like that did the trick on turning off the led4 light.
But machine still does not turn on.
Now that I had it open, when I click the power button, Led7 light turns on for a split second and the light on the power button stays if i hold it for a few seconds.
It says on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2652?viewlocale=en_US
that if it's red on Led7 contact Apple but it's not a solid red.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Helmut

  • PowerMac G5 Quad doesn't start up (crashes and fans become real loud)

    Hi all,
I started having problems with my PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5GHz (late 2005) about a week ago. First I found the computer with the fans running at full speed (really loud) after leaving the computer alone for a while (instead of going into Sleep mode). At this point, I wasn't able to recover it from that state and had to force it to shut down by holding down the power button. Another thing that caught my attention was that a couple of red LEDs were on (just behind the power button).
Last night, after finding the same situation and shutting down the computer, it would no longer start up. I could hear the hard disk starting to spin and the chimes sound, but I'd get no video at all (no gray screen or anything). After trying 3-4 times, the computer finally started up.
The situation got worse this morning, as again I found it with the fans on full blast. Now I can't get the computer to boot anymore. I no longer here the chimes sound or get a video signal at all. I can't open the CD tray either (it doesn't seem to recognize the keyboard) so I could not boot from a CD. And holding down the power button is no longer shutting it down, now I have to unplug it.
I've already tried relocating the RAM, resetting the SMU, and read about resetting the NVRAM (however, this was not possible as I have no response from keyboard input).
I've not installed any new software or hardware lately so maybe this was caused by the latest software update. After reading forums and searching the web, it looks like this problem has become quite common in the past few weeks. Has Apple taken any steps to solve this problem on the affected computers?
Any ideas or suggestions would be of great help. Thanks!

Man it sounds like what happened to my G5 quad before it died. Sounds like your power supply is done. There is a link on the lower right side on the SUPPORT page under EXCHANGE AND REPAIR PROGRAMS... There is a recall on the power supply of these models but Apple is not honoring it. Here is my story:
In April of 2009 My Quad dies and won't start. I bought this machine in January of 2006. I bring it into the Apple store and they said it is the Power Supply, but will cost over $500. I decide to buy a MacBook Pro due to the intel chip needed for newer programs.
August 2009- I find that Apple has announced a program to fix the Power Supply on the G5 Quad. (I guess they did not know about this repair program in April at the Apple store in Kahala, Hawaii). I figure that even though my computer is just over 3 years old they will surely fix it for free. Nope. Denied. "You gotta pay son".
Imagine if a car company announces a recall on a part that will render your machine inoperable and then denies to fix it.
I am very upset. If this does not get fixed for free I will not stop bad mouthing Apple until the day I die.

  • Yellow Lights for Assets, But the System Seems Idle

Have a HD (16:9) project finished except the video assets for buttons all have yellow lights. Opened Activity Monitor and it seems to confirm that the system is at rest, but two tasks are red and unresponsive.
    DSPX_AENCODER (NOT RESPONSIVE)
    DSPX_ENCODER (NOT RESPONSIVE)
It is a dual-quad MacPro with 12GBytes of RAM. Nothing is running except DVD-SP and Activity Monitor. Cores are all at rest except for occasional one-bar of activity. 1.3GByte of RAM is total used with 10.7GB free. Disk indicates 4-5 I/Os per second with 0 date read and/or written.
I have killed the tasks, restarted the program, and re-booted the system multiple times. DVDSP starts each time with the same two tasks unresponsive.
The main asset, which is the main HD video was compressed using compressor prior to importing into DVDSP. I noticed that while compressing, Activity Monitor told me that the task TRANSCODER was NOT RESPONDING, but the video compression was successful.
Is Activity Monitor trustworthy with Compressor tasks?
Thanks in advance folks. These boards save my life over, and over! Over.

    Anton,
Thanks for your help. That seemed to be the case. The build command caused the yellow assets to complete. However both encoders stayed red in the activity monitor and said they were "not responding," all the time.
Where are the settings for transcoding?
I burned the DVD, and received the message that the burn was successful, but my player connected to the TV would not recognize it. DVD player on the mac will play it, but it hesitates occasionally.
I guess more experimentation is in order.

  • Dead Powermac G5 Quad?

Hi I have a Powermac G5 Quad, late 2005. It has just begun to not turn on at all. After trying to start the computer it will begin to start, fans whirl, drive move, however no start up noise, then about a second or two later, red lights come on on the motherboard. I tried doing a SML reset to no avail. I've been looking online and no one else seems to be having these issues. Not sure if there is something I can do easily, or if someone has a similar expirience. Was looking and people have said apple has replaced these for them even out of warranty in the past, but I'm not the original owner so not sure if they would honor me at all. Hope someone has some ideas.
    The specs on it:
    Quad 2.5Ghz G5
    4.5 Gb of RAM
Oh and thought it might be a coolant leak but I'm not seeing any spilled in there...
    Please help!!!

Hi Japamac, No it does not respond to anything.
So here's what I ended up doing, I started reading about liquid damaged macs and that apple was fixing them for people. So I ended up just taking it to the apple store for them to look into it. I myself had felt like I saw some liquid seepage by one of the cooling tubes. However they called back the next day and told me they found nothing, I told them where I felt the leak was and they said they would look into it further. Now I just called back after a week of not hearing from them, was told oh sorry you were supposed to be called, although I never received a call of any kind and I never turn my phone off so I would have seen it. They told me that they found no liquid damage and that it was probably a dead processor as they die after a couple years. Right now I'm a little ****** off, I mean come on a $3000+ computer and they are telling me that they processors die out after a couple years. Yeah and its not like its too cheap to fix either! Anyone have any suggestions? A little ****** right now, maybe I should sell all my Macs and go buy a PC.

  • Brand new Intel Xserve Intel - blinking yellow light

    Hello:
I was wondering if anyone had any information on this.
I am the design/production/IT manager at a publishing company where we just purchased a brand new Xserve Intel. It is a quad core 2.8 GHz model with 2GB of RAM, 80GB internal hard drive, and a few external FireWire 800 drives attached. It's been a truly great machine so far, but there are a couple of problems we've been trying to figure out since we got it out of the box.
Upon powering the unit up for the first time until present, the yellow system identifier light on the front panel of the machine has been blinking nonstop. It's following a pattern of blinking very fast 3 or 4 times, followed by a 1 to 2 second period of being off. The yellow indicator light on the right hand rear side of the machine has also been blinking with the one on the front panel in tandem. The operations manual indicated a few possible problems, including the enclosure lock being on or being in an alarm condition, both of which have been ruled out. Pushing the button makes the light blink very rapidly also, but with no pause in between.
Our IT consultant from corporate headquarters was recently at our office and recommended that I call AppleCare to ensure that there were no hardware issues with the machine. The technician I spoke with stated that the blinking yellow light problem can be any one of about 4 dozen different things but as long as we were all able to connect to it and haven't had anything strange happen with our files, we should be good to go. At that time, our files were still migrating from the old Xserve to the new one, but even with that being over, the lights still continue to flash.
The other problem we've been experiencing is while in the Server Monitor utility. On the main information screen, the server name is blank, the IP address is showing up correctly, and the status summary reads "failure to connect." The log is set to update every ten seconds and keeps spitting out a "failed to contact server" error.
Everything is appearing and working correctly in the Server Admin utility.
Any information regarding either of these problems would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi everyone and thanks for all the info...I'll check all this out a bit later on today and get back to you.
Just a couple of other general questions I had for now...I've done a little investigating and noticed a couple of things, I'm wondering now if I'd be better off just tearing this thing down and reconfiguring it...unfortunately the person that was sent out here from corporate didn't do the best job of setting anything up!
    1. I noticed that we are hooked up to the second ethernet port vs. the first one. A couple of days back when I switched it to the first port, no one was able to sign or access the server.
    2. I recall that the new Xserve kept crashing in the middle of the OS software update (not sure which build or version it was, but it was the version that was just over 900 megabytes). The original operating system needed to be installed a total of three times as a result of this, just to get us to the point where we're at now.
    3. It appears that the LOM is the first thing that needs to be configured for everything else to run smoothly (although I could be wrong?)
    4. The biggest problem we encountered was migrating our files from the old Xserve to the new. We have a base configuration Xserve and our drive setup is a 750 GB Lacie D2 Quadra that's connected via FireWire 800. The old drive the files were on was on the verge of death and we were fortunate enough to get all the files moved to it before it finally conked out. Permissions on about 75% of the files were wrecked and the only complete fix was running a third party software application called Passenger (http://www.macinmind.com/?pid=2&progid=1&subpid=1). This was the only thing that worked in its entirety to get the permissions fixed.
    Thanks again for the info!

  • Blackberry Does not Function, Plugged into USB red light then 3 yellow lights and off

Blackberry Does not Function, Plugged into USB red light then 3 yellow lights and off, I cannot even claim the warrently without buying 50$ support?
I am an Electrical Engineer by trade and have 15+ years working with computers. I left it to charge over the last 3 days. Doesn't do anything. It's a $300 paper weight. My mother bought this product for me because she thought it was a great present but now it turns out to being worthless.
What kind of company are you? Honestly?
How the hell do you think your gonna get customer loyalty with this kind of customer service. It's clearly obvious why apple is destroying you. You are worthless competition. I want this blackberry fixed. I will NOT pay for support just to replace my blackberry. That is crooked business honestly. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
My mom bought this for my birthday 4 months ago. I open it up and it doesn't even work. How can you do this to your customers. It's no wonder your company is going out of business.
I demand you fix my issue. I have 1 year of warranty support. I will NOT pay extra just to get my Blackberry exchanged.
Wait until I inform all my news groups in my area of this. I am from ONTARIO, BRAMPTON. I am a CANADIAN, just like your company. CP24 WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS. I WILL RUIN YOUR REPUTATION. I PROMISE YOU THAT.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    No sarcasm here either.
One of my PlayBooks recently went 'possum on me, too. Very frustrated, tried all the known tricks and tips to charge and revive it. Over a year old. I called the support line knowing it was out of date and they would deny me.
Nope, the lady very pleasantly accepted my request, I spoke with customer support and they bugged me via email daily until we got it resolved -- to MY satisfaction. My first interaction with PlayBook support, and it could not have gone more nicely nor further beyond my expectation.
I don't know what you experienced with PlayBook support, you didn't say why you're so mad with them. This is a user-to-user community support forum. We are not RIM employees, but volunteers who enjoy assisting other users. RIM personnel rarely comment on queries posted here. You would have noticed this in the EULA and message upon registration.
Sooo... good luck, and just for the record... the LED activity you described IS very fixable. Sorry you don't have the choice to explore those remedies any longer.

  • IMAC connected to Mbox 2 - USB LED doesn't light up - Please help!

Pretty new to all of this. I just bought a new IMAC intel core duo and Mbox 2. I connected the Mbox 2 to the USB port and the LED didn't light up.. I disconnected it and tried again...same thing. I restarted the IMAC and connected the Mbox 2 again...still nothing. I went to system preferences and clicked on the Mbox 2 and it said "You cannot open digidesign Mbox 2 preferences pane on this computer. Contact the developerof this software for a newer version"....needless to say I'm lost now. Can someone point me in the right direction???
    IMAC   Mac OS X (10.4)

Try to use another cable and check if the internet led will light up. Try connecting the modem to the Ethernet ports as well for isolation. If you will get the same thing, do a hard reset on the router – push and hold the reset button on the router using a pin or a paper clip for 30 seconds then power the router off for another 30 seconds. Check the lights then. You can also do a loopback test – connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the internet port and the other end to any of the Ethernet ports. Check then if both ports will light up. If the internet led will still not light up then it’s possible that the hardware is defective.

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • HP Laserjet 1200 replaced toner & yellow light flashes

Hi! I have a HP Laserjet 1200 which printed with smudges and ghost text a few lines down. In an attempt to correct this, I installed a new toner cartridge. I had difficulty opening the toner door completely; it stuck about half-way opened. I opened the left and right panels to see if I could loosen the old cartridge, and something snapped (probably a plastic clip) when I forced the right panel open. Opening  the panels didn't help, and I closed them. Eventually, after applying some pressure, I opened the toner door all of the way and replaced the toner. Now the printer doesn't work. The yellow light just flashes. Replacing the old toner cartridge doesn't help. I still have the same blinking yellow light problem. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

I unplugged the electrical plug before (no off switch) but I guess for not long enough. Did it again and left it unplugged for awhile when I went to the store. Just plugged in and the memory has let go like you said. All's well now. Thanks.

  • Airport extreme time capsule yellow light - no Internet - cable modem does work

Is their a reset button on the time capsule or am I out of luck.
Yes I have turned on and off etc. the cable modem has been tested and is functioning ... Do jthese units go bad.
    Thanks friends

    Airport Extreme
    or
    Time Capsule
    These are two different devices?
You have a yellow light on both of them?
However, yes, you can reset either one of them.
A yellow light could mean there is just an update for each one of them.
But if yours isn't working there is another problem.
See this Apple doc about the blinking yellow light:

    Yes, that is correct.
Did you have the instructions that came with your Airport Extreme?  Are you sure you have it setup properly?  Here is the setup guide:

  • PowerMac G5 (quad) vs Intel Macs?

Hello what would be better? The PowerMac G5 (quad powerpc 2.5ghz) or Intel Mac mini or Intel iMac.
i don't have enough money for a Mac pro, so that's out of the question, but on ebay, the Powermac G5's (with quad processors) are about the same pice as mac mini's and a little cheaper than the iMac's. But would I be better off with an intel Mac or the G5 quad. I'm leaning towards the G5 because I can upgrade two hard drive slots and the RAM to 16gb.
Which is better for gaming, day to day stuff and animation software?

Thanks for the suggestions guys...I know I'm a few months late on the post and for that I apologize. Anyway I purchased a Quad-Core PowerMac G5 on Ebay last week for $600. Here are the specs:
    -2.5ghz Powerpc G5 quad-core
    -9gb RAM
    -1.5 tb HD (1 x 1tb & 1 x 500gb)
    -Built-in wifi & bluetooth
    -Geforce 6600 w/256 VRAM
I also purchased 12gb RAM on ebay for $124...they're all Kingston so that will be nice. I'm going to max out the RAM and I'm also thinking of Installing a small SSD for my boot/applications drive to speed it up a bit. Anyway I'll keep you posted. Thanks!

  • Flashing yellow light?

I've been reading other posts regarding the problems encountered by some after upgrading the Apple TV to 2.2. I believe my problem is related, but not sure. Others have found relieve by holding the "menu" and "-" keys on the remote to regain control, but mine just shows the apple icon on the screen and the yellow light continues to flash indefinitely (I guess). It's been flashing for several hours and nothing else appears to be happening. I've tried powering it off several times and as soon as I plug it back in, the light begins to flash yellow continously again. The Apple icon doesn't appear until I do the "menu" + "-" sequence again....but that's it.
Also...and unrelated to this problem...does anyone else's Apple TV stay very hot as long as it's plugged in?
    Thanks

The flashing yellow light combined with the failure to boot even after the power has been recycled would indicate a catastrophic failure. If it's totally unresponsive, there is nothing you will be able to do on your own to fix it. You should either call AppleCare or take it to an Apple store.
As for the heat, yes, it does get very hot. The top is reportedly designed to act as a heat sink, eliminating the need for a large, potentially noisy cooling fan.
