LED backlight went black

Day 3 with my new 2.2 15"MBP.
I attempted to use Photo Booth just now, and immediately after the white screen flash - the screen went black. Backlight shut off completely. This was darker than the normal dimming that occurs when idle; but I could still (barely) make out the icons on the desktop. Everything seemed to be functioning normally, albeit in complete darkness.
I hit the power button and clicked Restart. The backlighting returned at the start of the reboot cycle. Everything seems normal, and photo that started this was OK. Took some more pics with no problem.
Im not sure what I should do about this. Is it a one-off or systemic? This is my first Mac. Any thoughts?
MBP 15" 2.2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Purchased 6/12/07

Same here, used it for a week and during a day of air travel he screen just went dark and never came back. Machine works perfectly but is unusable but with an exernal monitor. My retailer is exchanging it for a new one. Very unusual for Apple but as expected the service is no questions asked perfect.
cheers

  • Dv7-3165dx led backlight lcd not working.

So the other day my laptop screen went out. i read about the dreaded black screen of death. Did a whole bunch of research and learned about the gpu needing reflowing, AND how to reset you computer and the blink codes and all that Jazz. i did the external monitor thing and lo-and behold everyting was fine. All it was, is that the monitor is not turning on. So I proceed to open it up and check all the connections. Everything is connected and all the plugs are clean. Did a full clean on the whole computer. I even reseated all the connections, made sure i have all the proper drivers and everything is up to date. NO conflicts anywhere.
But still no monitor. Still I research again, some people say could be inverter board, but mine is led backlight. So there is no inverter board to change.  I reopen everything and check one more time. One cable looks a little off angle reseat it and try again. STILL no monitor. Shut it down and start it up the next day, BOOM it has lcd life!??!?!?!?!
Start playing everything as normal and test it by putting it into sleep mode. It starts right back up. I turn it off all the WAY. Restart and she is dead again.
This is where I am stuck. The Lcd right angle connector looks a little pinched but I don't know what is causing this. Can you help ME PLEASE!
Again everthign works on external monitor. Sound works, Camera works, just no screen, EXCEPT once until full cold reboot. Then she is dead again.
    Is it the cable?
    Or is it the GPU?
Or is it the LCD screen?
OR something I may not have identified?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi @Sarteret
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that your built in display is not working consistently. It does sound as if there is some stress on the cable, and it is possible that it is an intermittent connection.
Did you notice any difference with the display coming up or not when the built in display is moved? MOre specifically, if it is working and you move the display  a bit on its hinges does it stop working, or if it was not working does it seem like the screen may show some small signs of a connection?
Also you can look at these, although what you are experiencing does sound more like a problem more with hardware, either the cable, or the connectors on either end of the cable, sound like possibilities.

  • Tecra A11 - LED backlight issue

I have big pain in my eyes after day of work with Tecra A11 BIOS V1.7 = newest BIOS update. Wenn I bought it there was BIOS 1.4 the same problem with eyes, LED backlight killing my eyes, big pain after day of work. V1.5 and 1.6 are much better (no pain) but new BIOS 1.7 is the same eye-killer as 1.4.
Who is going to help me? Users of this forum?
I want Toshiba people to help me, they sell 1/2 ready product, absolutely bad work! No contacts to Toshiba just this user forum. Is Toshiba interested in my problem with his bad Tecra A11 notebook and stupid BIOS updates? I am really angry, never had such problems with so expensive notebook. So excuse my emoutions I start to hate Toshiba for the extremly bad experience with this Tecra A11. Why should some users of this forum help me? I paid a lot of money to Toshiba, so I want Toshiba people to tell me what they do in their BIOS updates, what stupidity kill my eyes with LCD backlight. How many BIOS updates will be needed to make Tecra A11 working properly for 800 EUR? I will never more buy something from Toshiba.

    Thanks Xardas,
One week and we have BIOS Update 1.9 !! = aproximately one update a week. On one side very nice to see that Toshiba takes care of the problems. On other hand why are so many updates needed? Was this Tecra A11 is sold as final product with 1/2 unfunctional BIOS? Wenn I bougt it I had BIOS 1.4 and I tell you there were mistakes even when you went through the menu, so if someone tested it in Toshiba he could see it. So I have really feeling that Toshiba didnot test BIOS properly. That is maybe why they need to update BIOS so oft. They use users as testers, what is for some rare problems OK, but not for common bugs!
Why does not Toshiba describe what exactly is updated in new BIOS version? Where can I find this information, e.g. what is changed between BIOS 1.6 and 1.7 and so on.? I need this information because I really do not know what is going to happen if I update to 1.9 now. I do not want to spend another day with playing with bios, and in worst case to kill my eyes with bug in LED Backlight. So where can I find what is new in BIOS 1.9 ?
My LED Backlighting problem is in BIOS 1.4 and 1.7. You cannot see that something is happening, but after day of work (8 hours) I cannot look at Tecra A11 monitor any more, because of pain iu my eyes. I thing this happens because LEDs in Backlight are too strong and maybe Toshiba uses some kind of pulse modulation to control LED brightnes. So you see brightnees is low (no strong), but in reality maybe you get a strong flasshing LED light into your eyes whitout brain sense for it. So you see normal backlight, but mayby you become very short time strong impulses of LED full intensity into your eyes what you do not notice, only as pain after many hours. This is my explanaition but I didnot measured it. Toshiba sold notebook with Bios 1.4 and immediately updated to 1.5 where this problem was solved. Thats why I was thinking that they know about this problem and they just solved it for ever. But in V1.7 problem ware back, and my eyes took 2 days to recover from pain. So it is really angry bug and I do not know if to stay by Bios 1.6 or to try update to 1.9. I want Toshiba to describe what is going on in BIOS updates.
Maybe this is problem of only my notebook so I will try to contact authoorized service provider, but I would be really positively suprised if they know what to do with it. We will see. But please if you know, answer me where is information what is new in BIOS Updates from Toshiba. Thanks

Just came back from the Genius Bar. Dead for good, repairs would be around the price for a new one. What a good way to spend a thousand bucks on an LCD that will die in about a year. I guess I won't buy any expensive LCD from Apple anymore.

  • HT4061 my screen went black but it still makes sounds?

my phone out of no where the screen went black yet I still hear text notifications

    Hi there SofiVelez,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.

  • My 27in LED monitor goes black, pops then comes back on

Brand new 27in LED monitor goes black, popping sound comes from speakers (I think) then comes back on. Plugged into my brand new Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz i7. Unplugged every thing and it still does it. Has most recent firmware. Just started after five days of ownership. Do I need to take it back to the Apple Store?

Had a second-hand TV once (I am cheap -- sue me).  One day the screen went fritzy and the room smelled of ozone.
Ozone is a big clue with regards to electronic equipment.

  • Matte vs Glossy on LED backlight

Im about to buy one of these new MBP's, but Im torn on the screen.
Im used to matte and am very wary of the reflectiveness of the glossy screens. Would the matte screens visual performance in sunlit conditions also be increased by the LED backlight?
I would like to hear about peoples experiences and recommendations.

I went back and forth on matte or glossy a great deal before purchasing my new Santa Rosa 15" MBP. I hope my experience can help with your decision.
I use both laptop and desktop systems. I do a great deal of color work photographing product and producing catalogs and websites. I rely heavily on Aperture, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and InDesign. Attached to my G5 tower is a 23" Cinema Display. I do the majority of my photo editing and layout work on that display and it's wonderful, so long as I calibrate it regularly (this is a must).
I've owned virtually every laptop that Apple has produced in one generation or another since the Blackbird models. I upgraded to the Santa Rosa 2.4 from a first generation MacBook Pro (matte). No laptop I've used has a display that is acceptable for critical color work. Not one, not even close. I'm not knocking Apple's laptop displays specifically, as they've produced some good ones, but rather laptop displays in general. They are simply inadequate for mission critical color work.
I travel with my laptop and shoot products digitally direct to my laptop. The colors I see in the shoots, even with a color calibrated laptop, aren't close to what I get when I get back to my office and begin editing the photos. So, those of you who maintain that matte is the only way to go because it's much more accurate for color editing should really be espousing the use of an external display for those purposes. A laptop display won't cut it if color accuracy is paramount.
So, what do I use the laptop for besides spot work when I'm not at my desktop? I use it for mail, word processing, iPhoto for family stuff using my point and shoot, web browsing, watching dvds while I travel, watching downloaded movies and shows, showing off photos to friends and family, and the occasional bit of gaming, and just a touch of iMovie & iDVD editing. Having just bought my first, I can now say the glossy display blows the doors off the matte display for these purposes.
I took a leap of faith, bought the glossy, and I can tell you it's absolutely gorgeous. For the activities I listed, it's a much more impressive display to look at than the matte. Photos look much richer, colors are much more vivid, and even text is sharper and easier to read. And, despite using it in mixed environments (office with fluorescent lights, studio with hot lamps, home with lots of windows, airports & planes) glare has really not been the issue I had feared. I do not use my laptop outside, so I can't speak to that specifically.
So from now on it's glossy laptop displays for me. Will I do color critical work on it? Heck no, but then again I wouldn't do that on the matte version either. That remains the domain of my Cinema display. But for most everything else, the glossy display, to my surprise, looks much better.
    I hope that helps.

  • Ibook went black

    Hi,
    I'm trying to find Rhoda.
I'm new at this forum stuff.
I have an ibook who's screen just went black.
After reading all I can find on line, it's sounds
like it maybe the logic board. Because the computer
belongs to my school system and the Tech. guy doesn't
come in until the end of the week, I do not want to get
it worked on by Apple. However, I do want to
get my files off of it. Can I take it to the Apple store
to get it downloaded? Is there a simple something I
    can do at home???

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
What is the MHz rating of your iBook?
Does adjusting the angle of the display make a difference? Sometimes if the display goes black, it is the backlight cable being pinched in the hinge.
Have you tried resetting the PMU? Since the PMU (Power Management Unit) has control over backlighting, resetting it sometimes helps when the display has gone dark.
The symptoms of the typical logic board failure can be found on the FAQ page of the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program FAQ page.
If you have access to another Mac with FireWire, you may be able to access the hard drive of the iBook by using FireWire Target Disk Mode and back up your files to the other Mac's hard drive.
Let us know how things go.

    See Ogelthorpe's link:
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

I have a 30 inch monitor on my mac pro tower that just went black, how can I get it back on?

He's asking what are those things you are using, i.e., ...
What video card are you using?
What version of OSX are you using?
What model of mac pro are you using (e.g., 2010 Mac Pro is 5,1).
    And also,
    Try smc and pram reset.
And see if the monitor lites up if you boot in safe mode.
It is possible your monitor simply failed -- its power supply or something else.
