LED, Chime, Fan... and that's it!  Mini will not boot.

Greetings,
My Mini (stats below) will not boot. The LED lights, the chime sounds, and the fan turns on. However, the HD does not spin and it won't take a DVD.
I have reset PRAM/VRAM through the keyboard sequence and through Open Firmware. I have also reset the PMU. I have swapped RAM chips and tried a different monitor. Now the keyboard seems to be totally unresponsive to any commands. I can not boot to any mode. It just sits there. It is out of warranty.
This all started with a kernal panic. I then ran disk utility and repaired the HDD. Each further step after that seemed to do more harm than good.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dan

Fixed. After disassembling it again, I found the antenna wire disconnected. I had to reroute the antenna wire as it seems that each time I'd put the case back together, it would pull off.
Consider this case closed!

Hello, My mac mini will not boot. When I turn it on, I get the chime, then the white screen, then the apple symbol, then a file symbol with a question mark, then the white screen and then it stays like that.
Is this a bad hard drive?

Sounds like it.  Try booting from your OSX restore DVDs - startup and hold down "C".  This will take AGES! Then run Disk Utility from the menu.
The flashing ? means your system is corrupt, dead, not there, on a dying HD, etc...

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

I have other Macs and fire wire cables, cross over cables, regular eithernet cables. What can I do?

Connect it to another Mac with a FireWire cable and start it up with the T key held down.

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

  • Mini will not boot disks from combo drive

Mini was having "issues." Thought I would do a clean install to correct all problems. When I insert OSX install disk and hold "C" key the computer tries to boot from the disk. The grey screen and apple logo apear. But instead of then going to the little spinning grey bars and booting to the disk, the grey apple shifts to the right and a some trash appears to the right of the logo, the computer freezes.
I have run the computer in terminal mode and run disks on the optical drive just fine.
It simply will not boot off of a disk in the optical drive.

Try booting into safemode by holding down shift key. Sometimes it does take up to 5 minutes to boot into safemode but sometimes your atleast able to uses your computer as a temporary fix. If you can't boot into safemode it sound's like your hard drive has failed, in that case you would need to contact apple for a repair.

  • Windows 8 and Canvio Desk 3TB: System will not boot when external hdd is connected

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g/HP-PAVILION-A6109N-amp-windows-8-System-w...
    Hi,
just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N.  I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB.  What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***

Update:  The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS.  It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk.  I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing.

  • Mac-mini will not boot up.

After downloading the latest OSX version for my mac-mini model A1283, it attempted to automatically re-start and stopped with a graphic on the screen and no control of the cursor. It will not boot up. No screen at all. Keyboard SHIFT key light does not go on. The power button will start and stop, but no tones or screen. Has worked fine for 2 years after upgrading hard drive running both OSX and Windows 8. Is this a memory or logic board problem?

  • Mac Mini will not boot up at all

Mac Mini 1.5Ghz Intel Solo, will not boot up now. It first froze when playing a song in iTunes. I shut down "the hard way." Now it can't make it past the gray boot screen. It's not even responding to any keyboard commands on boot. I can't get into Safe Mode, Boot from Recovery Disc or Single user.
    HELP!!!!

If you have the original Apple Aluminum usb keyboard, the startup modifier keys won't work with your Mini. But just about any other wired usb keyboard should work.
If you use a PC usb keyboard, Alt maps to Option and the Win key maps to the CMD (Apple) key.
If you just want to boot from the install or recovery disk, then the Apple remote can be used: holding down the remote's Menu button at startup works the same as holding down the Option Key, namely, it gives you the choice of what disk/disc to boot from.

  • K9NGM and BFG 3D fusion 7600GS will not boot

I have recently upgraded my computer with new motherboard memory, processor and graphics card, see below
    K9NGM-L bios V3.1

    1Gb Geil DDR2 667 Mhz
    BFG 3D Fusion 7600GS PCI-E
    Windows XP SP2
    550W PSU
The problem I have is that this will run fine on the integrated 6100 graphics card however, if I install the graphics card the system will not boot, remove the card and everything is fine.
I have returned the graphics card to the supplier as faulty and it has been replaced but the problem still remains.
I have also contacted MSI tech support and have followed their suggestion of clearing the CMOS and loading the optimised defaults but no joy.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?

give us PSU details. (can be found into PSU sticker)
go into BIOS, "Load Optimized Defaults" config "Y" then "SAVE AND EXIT",
back to BIOS navigate to "PNP/PCI Configurations", setup "Primary Graphics Adapter" to PCI-Express.
navigate to "Advanced Chipset Features", setup "OnChip and PCIe VGA selection" to Auto. then "SAVE AND EXIT".
power down PC, remove power cord from PSU and install your external VGA use PCI-E x16 slot. attach/move monitor cable from onboard VGA to BFG and fireup PC.

  • My Mac Mini Will Not Boot From Install Disc For Re-Installation

I've tried all (at least the ones I've found) workarounds to get my Snow Leopard Install Disc to boot, but it will not. When the computer boots normally (without the DVD), I can insert the DVD and access it from there. However, when I try to use the utilities on the disc, it requires a reboot that ends up telling me to turn off my computer. I have a Late 2010 Mac Mini and I have yet to try booting from a disc, so I don't know if this is a new problem or an old one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unplug everything from your computer except a wired keyboard/mouse and the monitor. If your Mini still won't boot from the install DVD try resetting the PRAM and SMC.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't fix the problem remove any RAM (if you upgraded) and replace with the Mini's original RAM.  There is also this document you might want to read, Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup.
If that all fails I would take the Mini to the Apple store. It should still be under warranty if you bought it late last year.

    Hello!
Don't think you have to flash the BIOS. Nor do I think there is a problem with the mobo.
Two main reasons for boot problems are:
PSU with not enough grunt - please say something about it.
Memory timings are too tight - don't have any special or ultra settings.
The power cable has not been attached to the graphics card - don't know really if it is needed but I think so.
Please note that a weak PSU might not reveal itself til the power cable is connected.
About flashing BIOS, if you use the LiveUpdate program that came on the MSI install CD, it is no more trouble than upgrading any driver. But please make sure you get the right BIOS, and that it solves the issue you got.

  • HELP Mac Mini will not boot after 10.5.1 update

After I tried installing 10.5.1 I received a warning message that the update will not be installed because of an error and I should contact the vendor. After that the Mini tries to reboot. It keeps repeating the process over and over. I have tried to do safe boot mode by manually turning off the computer and then restarting while holding shift, but nothing happens. Can anybody help?

I think the problem might be with the external HDD I am running with this machine. I am reinstalling everything now from my time machine backup. I just added this hard drive the other night and it is loud as all **** and I believe it is why my machine has crashed. Before I added the drive, my system was running pretty good. It is a Calvary 160gb drive. I think I am going to have to send this POS back to newegg and get myself another Lacie drive, because my other Lacie is running smoothly.
I'd go with the LaCie. I got two from Amazon, 320 and 500 and both are quiet, have 800MHz FW and I have had no problems with either of them. The new one also has a 3-position switch - Off/Auto/On which allows it to sleep when not being accessed when in Auto.
I suspect that your external HD was the problem all along.

  • IPad Mini will not boot after battery drained after IOS8.0.2 Update

I upgraded to IOS 8.0.2 having skipped 8.0.1 two days ago. I did not notice any unusual problems, but with hindsight a few apps did crash out on occasions, but not consistently.
Yesterday night I let the battery completely drain and I plugged it in to recharge overnight.
This morning I find that logo is still on screen and it doesn't look as if the iPad has recharged. I have tried re-booting a number of times, but it will not progress beyond the Apple Logo. I have tried connecting to iTunes on my Macbook Pro, but no device is recognised.
Having left the iPad sitting next to me while still connected to a charger, I have noticed on a couple of occasions a flash of blue screen followed by black and then the Apple Logo appearing again.
My iPad Mini Retina 128Gb appears very dead at the moment. Any suggestions on revival?

Try to put your iPad into DFU mode and do a full restore this way. To do so, follow the steps below:
    1. Open iTunes on your computer
    2. Connect your iPad via USB.
    3. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for about 10 seconds.
    4. Release the Sleep/Week button but keep pressing the Home button until iTunes shows that it has detected and iPad in DFU mode.
    5. Try restoring your iPad.
If this won't solve your problem, and you are not able to do a restore via iTunes at all, then take your iPad to an Apple Retail Store because then it is possibly a hardware failure. Here you can find the service options: https://getsupport.apple.com/ProductSelector.action
