LED on 17' MBP???

I'm confuse weather the latest 17" MBP is LED or LCD display? I have ask few retailer about this question but there gave me different answer... Anyone can help me on this? Thank you in advane.
macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
my personal opinion is that Apple would have loved to introduce LED to 17" as well, but simply the Display Manufacturer isn't or wasn't capable in producing this in the needed quantity.
As soon as the production process output is high enough, 17" displays with LED will be in the market.

  • LED Backlight flicker within specification!

    Hi All,
I recently purchased a 2.2 GHz LED backlight Glossy MBP. After using the unit for a few days I noticed repeated eye strain and headaches.
I calibrated the LCD to no avail and can honestly say that I have never had such an issue with my glossy CCFL backlight MB or new 24" iMac.
After almost a week of use, I stumbled upon a background that exposed a clear flickering on the LCD. (Here is a copy: http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au/~lucas/background.html)
I called Apple and was told to take it in to an authorized repair center (Next Byte, Nedlands WA). Upon showing the unit to the technician, he stated that the flicker was evident and that he would let Apple know.
I called Apple a little later but they had still not heard back from the repair center, even though I had been called by Next Byte and told that Apple had been filled in. However to my surprise, the current technician proceeded to inform me that the flicker on my unit was standard across all LED backlight units and that it was "within specification"!
I was and still am very disappointed that a flicker on any LCD is acceptable and fail to see how such a disappointing "feature" can be palmed off as tolerable.
I am waiting to hear from Apple on Monday but so far I am so far disgusted with my experience. A 2,700 AUD machine should not exhibit an LCD flicker, least of all one that causes its user considerable discomfort.

  • Sleep leads to shutdown - MBP Retina

Lately, Sleep has led to my MBP Retina shutting down. Happens when lid is close or when Sleep is selected.
Tried some variations on type of hibernation without success. Tried Safe Boot, tried turning off wake for network access, tried letting hard drives sleep.
    Suggestions? Thx.
    MBP Retina Mid-2012 (MacBookPro10,1)
    OS 10.8.2

If it was doing it some time after going to sleep, I would suspect a power issue, probably battery.
Since you say even selecting "Sleep" shuts it down and you have to do a full boot, then something is preventing it from going to sleep. Have you modified settings? Any terminal commands that might have changed the behavior of sleep? Any power management programs you installed (Caffein, etc.)?

  • 24" Cinema Display Problem

I have a 24" Cinema Display which I plug in to my MBA. The MBA doesn't seem to detect the speakers in the display or the isight camera. I thought this might be a USB issue but the USB sockets on the rear of the screen work fine. Any ideas?

Brilliant idea to test with a different Mac!
Finding that the problem is the same with more than one Mac indicates that your problem is with the display.
If you tested ONLY the cables that came with your display, the problem might be cabling.

  • Color fidelity and the New MacBook Pro glossy display like iMac

I'm very concerned about the new MacBook Pro display which is glossy like the iMac. Can Apple guarantee precise Color fidelity and correct calibration for Pro users? Aren't glossy glass screens more saturated, deeper Blacks and higher contrasted. Aan Apple answer to this very important question that will draw or throw thousands of Professionals off the new Pro laptop.

Sorry, your comments only confirm the post above. Below is a copy of a comment from Charles Higgins posted to Maintouch. I copied it for posting here (I hope that is legal).
    Charles Higgins
To those who must work in bright, unshaded sunlight, Hoodman makes a pretty good reflection/glare 'hood' (sic) that does its job, except it's godawful ugly and bulky.
To everyone else (designers, photogs, and image editors), who must often work in less than ideal outdoor and indoor environments with their MBP's (including the dreaded airline seat), I feel your pain. I do ALL of these jobs, professionally, am an Adobe Beta Tester, have a Cisco CCNE and independently consult for folks like The University of Massachusetts (all campuses), Smith College, Middlebury College, to name a few, on everything from spec'ing Video, Graphics, and Photography labs to deployment, training, etc...
However - the MBP's screen, reflective though it may be, is my favorite laptop screen so far, and I've tried all brands for a long time. I've owned and professionally used, daily, Mac laptops/notebooks since Wall Street.
If it's a deal-breaker to have a glossy screen, you need to re-examine your techniques for use- how you work, where you work, light sources, etc.- because it's a really good indicator of how accurately you perceive color, brightness and tonality accurately... in other words, under conditions that I get unacceptable glare and reflections on my new MBP's glossy screen (CTO 2.8, 320GB 7200 RPM, new 24" on order, DP to DVI adapter out to 30" Cinema Display in home office), I would be getting unacceptable 'light pollution' onto my matte 30" Cinema Display, or any number of CRT monitors I used professionally in days past (Sony Artisans, Barco, etc.), and that's a good barometer, to me, of whether I have a 'pure' viewing environment for critical color work. Just because one can eke out a good or acceptable image view on a matte LCD MBP screen, doesn't mean you should do color critical, submit billing to client work in that already compromised situation. The matte screen often delivers a 'false sense of security' to those folks who work professionally in graphics, video and image editing. I find, or create, an environment that I can work well in with regard to screen viewing, and that's where, matte LCD screen or Glossy, I can get the best results. If I cannot get that environment, I curse my lack of resourcefulness and do work that isn't color-critical, just as I would with any matte screen Mac notebook LCD. In my long experience, and comparing them to even midlevel CRT monitor screens (Mitsu Diamond Pro 22", etc.) is absolutely no contest. Matte screens have an unacceptably low contrast and brightness, and a more primitive rendering of fine tonal gradations and shadows to blacks. My 30" Cinema Display has some of these same shortcomings, of course - but to a far lesser degree. Still, those shortcomings are there, and for the same reasons. The new, DP equipped 24" Cinema Display is a piece of pro equipment that I look forward to immediately calibrating and putting to work immediately!
The clients I've converted to MBP glossy screens because of the shortcomings of any laptop matte screen BTW, my new MBP has a noticeably better screen than the glossy one on my early 2008 MBP (LED backlit); I calibrated both with Gretag MacBeth calibration hardware. I have been able to hardware calibrate the newer MBP to a tighter tolerance.
Got glare? That's a symptom you're gonna probably get less than accurate results from any screen. Having used matte LCD screens in Mac notebooks for many years, I'll take the new LED backlit glossy MBP screens over anything available so far.

  • Why does my iSight camera keep taking pictures of me?

I installed mackeeper, which has an anti-theft device that takes pix of the thief should I report the unit stolen. I tested it out and it appears to work, although I didn't see any pix.

    To protect your Mac:
    (1)  NEVER install Norton on any OS X Mac.
Norton may(?) be useful for PCs,

    (2) Keep your Mac in your physical possession.
    (3) Do not give permission for others to use or connect to your Mac
on any network you may join.
    (4) Do not add any third-party (non-Apple) software
unless you KNOW that it is safe to use.
If you have doubts and do not have a trusted, knowledgeable source,
you can post here and ask for opinions.
    (5) If you do/can/will not comply with ALL of the above,
you may want to add software checks.
I have NEVER needed to add such software on ANY of my Macs,
and I have NEVER had a malware or virus problem.

  • Recording with iSight - Video Size option missing

Ok, I hope someone can help me. I record video directly into iMovie using the built in isight on my mac. On the import window using the camera I used to have the option on the bottom to select the video size (640x480 or 1024x576). For some reason this is missing (the bottom frame is blank except for the camera selection options).
I can't figure out how to get the higher resolution option back. Where did it go? Help!
    Thanks.

I now use iMovie9 and Lion 10.7.2.  The choice bar is gone for me, too!
To validate your experience, I started a new wide-screen project and imported from inbuilt iSight.  After dragging the new capture event into the new project, I clicked the "crop" button and found that all the resolution is still there!  I can  crop or re-frame by dragging the crop bars or area.  However, I cannot select the entire frame for inclusion in my project.
Based on this, it seems to me that full frame iSight recording has been sacrificed, probably so stabilization can use the edges.
Unless someone else knows a way, it seems to me that if we want the old choices bar back, we will need to retreat to an older version.

  • Mission:Rapair, rip-offs and woes

My MBP screen is broken (cracked). Apple would charge me $700 to repair it, which is scandalous enough since I have Apple Care, but the representative sent me to Mission:Repair (https://www.missionrepair.com/) assuring me they could do it for much less.
I decided to just get a screen repair kit and change it myself. I ordered a glossy screen, 15.4" LED. Price was about $280. Then I waited for a week and received nothing. Checked online, and realized they are in backorder, a fact not mentioned when I placed my order, nor did they send me an email about this either. On the phone, they told me they where waiting for a shipment, without any date when they would get any. The guy then proposed to send me a matte one. I canceled the order and decided to look elsewhere.
And there I find a reputable seller on eBay with new glossy 15.4" LED displays for MBP, and it costs only $149.00. Even with an overnight shipping of $30 it is still $100 cheapear than Mission:Repair, and they didn't make me wait for a week without any warning that the item was back ordered.
Avoid this place, even if apple reps recommend it to you.
On a brighter note, since I am a graphic designer and need a computer to work everyday, I bought the IMac quad-core 2.66 Mhz (i5) with 27" screen. Absolutely love it. The magic mouse, not so much. Looks nice in the store, but practically I prefer my RAZER mouse.

I hope you called back AppleCare to let them know of Mission:Repair experience, since AppleCare was the one that recommended it to you. There are other service places that do charge less than Apple, but Mission:Repair is not one I've heard of in the past. These ones have been highly recommended by others in the forum:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
I only have personal experience with the first one, and it was solid and saved me $800.
As for cracked screens, it is difficult to justify repairing it under warranty, since a warranty is not the same thing as insurance. Insurance allows for accidents. Warranty just means the design itself shouldn't allow problems to occur. And if you read the terms and conditions of the warranty, it does not cover user accidents or negligence. There is computer insurance that sometimes falls under homeowner insurance, as well as computer insurance you can buy from:
    http://www.safeware.com/
Thank you for posting your experience though. This is though a user to user forum, thus posting here may not necessarily get the word across to the AppleCare representatives who liked Mission:Repair.

  • How many Mp is the Mac Book Pro laptop camera?

Cause allot of my friends say the camera is not really Hd.
And i tell them yes it is HD and better then windows to...
But when i buy a Apple Mac Book Pro Is the Camera HD and does not lagg when people chat on Skype?
How many MP is the camera aka Mega Pixels ?

Different MacBook Pros have different resolution.
My mid-2009 13" is 0̸.3 MP (640x480 pixels). This does NOT qualify as "HD".
However, my early 2011 15" MBP is 1.2 MP (1398x874 pixels)
which DOES qualiffy it for the "HD" 720p standard.
Your retailer should be able to tell you the specifics for the particular MBP you are considering.
If you want to test a Mac for yourself, how I do the test is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread/2620732
Use as much light as possible and a fast internet connection for best possible Skype picture.  BTW, broadband speed matters at BOTH ends, so you use something like http://speedtest.net/ to test both ends of your video connections.

  • Noises-White Macbook

    Hi.
Alright so when I turn on my comp, occationally there is a loud noise that seems to be coming from the fan (under the 7/y keys about). It occurs more frequently when I open the comp from an uneven surface like a bed. Then i can get it to make less noise by picking it up form both sides of the machine. Its like it get bowed upwards, and when i pick it up it goes back to normal.
I'm at 4.5 years of having this computer and i've been traveling with it in my backpack for 2 years now. (so i'm wondering if being in a backpack has "warped" the system alittle bit. causing more friction for the fan?)
any suggestions? I'm thinking of bringing it in. I'd rather spend 50$ today and have this computer for another 5 years.

Based on your admitted use of your "comp from an uneven surface like a bed" and on the additional problem described in your other current topic :

I suggest you have your Mac checked out by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
The lack of ventilation from using your Mac on a soft surface may have caused heat damage to your hardware.
Be sure to backup all important files before taking your Mac for service.

  • Horizontal shifting bars on MBP 15 after disconnecting 24" LED cinema display and waking up from clamshell mode.

I use my MBP 15 (late 2011) with 24" Apple LED Cinema display in a clamshell mode. After disconnecting external display, and opening display, it shows horizontal shifted bars, so it becomes completely unusable. Have to hard reset laptop. Any hints on how to resolve this? Thanks.

Ok, more information for anyone that might care. The wake-up seems to be the familiar dark wake in order to go into hibernate mode. Except now, it's a death wake. Looking at the logs, I see that it happens exactly 70 minutes after sleeping, even though hibernatemode = 0 (which shouldn't hibernate at all!)
So my power settings look like this:
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    darkwakes            0
    gpuswitch            2
    disksleep            10
    sleep                10
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        0
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         2
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
standbymode is 70 minutes, what a coincidence. I'm going to try setting it to 0 and see what that does.

  • MBP 2.4Ghz Penryn Magsafe LED light randomly on/off w/ sporadic charging

I have one of the February 2008 MacBook Pro's with 2.4Ghz C2D. I have had this thing for only 5 days and have noticed that the charging behavior has been sporadic.
Sometimes i plug in my MBP and the amber light illuminates to indicate charging, and 10 minutes later, the light is off - no light, not even green is illuminated. But the MBP indicates that it is plugged in and charging on the menu bar, as well as flashing LEDs on the bottom of the MBP/battery pack.
I have also noticed that sometimes when I plug in the MBP and place the computer in sleep then return many hours later, the LED on the magsafe is not illuminated at all, and the battery is still drained around the same amount as before I plugged it in. This has happened three times so far. This is an intermittent problem and not reliably reproducible.
I have already tried resetting the SMC. I guess I will call AppleCare... Anyone else have this problem?

That sounds like a faulty power supply unit ...

  • MBP 15' 2011 Mini display port to LED monitor/TV resolution issue

    Hello,
I have just bought  a Mini Display - VGA adaptor which I am plugging to a Samsung 23' LED monitor via a VGA/DVI adaptor. I manage to get a clone view but unfortunately, the maximum resolution offered is 1650x1050 when my Samsung LED monitor has resolution of 1920x1080. Therefore, part of the screen remains black.
... also, when I plug the Mini display port to VGA to my Philips 47' VGA port, I got a message that there must be a problem with the connection and again, maximum resolution offered if 1440x10..  and therefore 20% of my TV screen space remains black.
At last, when I launch Windows7 via bootcamp, this is even wost : when I select the max resolution (1440x10..), the pictures remains freezed on my TV and I can't even move the mouse (while the mouse is moving on the MBP screen...). Only coming back to a very small resolution 800x600 or so will enable me to get control of the win7 desktop on my TV...
Thank you in advance for your help
    Greg

I have just bought  a Mini Display - VGA adaptor which I am plugging to a Samsung 23' LED monitor via a VGA/DVI adaptor. I manage to get a clone view but unfortunately, the maximum resolution offered is 1650x1050 when my Samsung LED monitor has resolution of 1920x1080. Therefore, part of the screen remains black.
If you are using the monitor in Mirrored mode, its resolution setting will always be exactly the same as that of the built-in display. I presume you have the high-res 15" MBP display, with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. If that's true, I suspect your monitor is indeed in Mirrored mode, and that's why you can't set the monitor to its native 1920 x 1080 resolution. If you press Command+F1 to toggle the mnitor into Extended Desktop mode, you'll be able to set its resolution independently of the built-in display. Or if you use only the external monitor, with the MBP display closed, you'll be able to set the monitor's resolution to whatever it supports.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
Stacking one video adapter on top of another is usually a recipe for trouble. It's always best to keep things as simple as possible. Use one adapter that gets you from mini-Displayport to whatever input you want to use on the TV or monitor.

  • MBP LED LCD Gradient Test - Software or Hardware issue?

    Hello!
I've noticed some of the discussions around the new MBP's LED displays, and some people having issues with not-so-smooth gradients in LCDTest 1.1 or 2.0.
My current, new, SR 15" MBP sports a darkish bar in the green area of the gradient, and a solid one in the red corner, when using the default color profile. That is, the gradient does not have all smooth transitions between colors. Switching to one of the (very blueish) sRGB-like profiles, the gradients display just fine and as smooth as they should. Weirdly, using the LCDTest 2.0's feature to display the gradient using Quartz, the gradient is completely smooth even with the default color profile.
As this issue also shows up in the color picker of applications such as Photoshop, where it is - in my opinion - prohibitive, and because I would much rather use a decently calibrated profile than simply a blueish-looking one, even considering that it is only a laptop LCD, my question, now, is:
Is this an actual hardware problem that can only be fixed by replacing the LCD itself, or is it possible that there will be a software/firmware upgrade published by Apple in the near future, to amend it?
(Note: I am not referring to the yellow-ish tinge mentioned by some users here, I am only talking about the issue concerning the smoothness of the gradient.)
    Any ideas or actual insights?
    MBP 2.4 15" Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'll say it differently: I doubt we can do anything about it, because it's obviously a problem with the LCD technology. I think we have no chance to push Apple into using 1440x900 15,4inch LCDs from some other manufacturer.
After all, the specs say "support for millions of colors" and not "actually viewing millions of colors".
If you need a color-perfect working environment, you actually have to use a calibrated external display. You can never fully rely on any notebook LCD.

  • Problem: Plugging an LED-display into my MBP 15"

    Hello!
I recently bought a BenQ G2222HDL 21.5" LED Monitor and I have encountered some problems when trying to connect it to my MBP via the Mini DisplayPort to DVI-adapter.
My MBP (spring 2010) won't find the display but when I try to connect the display to my brothers MB (spring 2009) it works immediatley and it finds the display in no time.
Is there any differences between the Mini DisplayPort on older an newer models of MB?
Have anyone out there encountered the same problem? Anyone got any suggestion on how i can make it work?
    Thanks!
