LED on power adapter doesn't always light?

I have two power adapters, on one the LED lights all the time and is either green when recharged, or orange when charging. Another has an intermittent behavior as far as the lighting is concerned, and won't light up when it is charged. The menubar shows that it is charged. Is this a problem and should I get that adapter replaced, if it otherwise appears to be working well and isn't overheating or frayed?

Hey there. Have you had any other issues with your battery, ie. not able to fully charge, or shutdowns before the OS tells you power is getting low?
The reason I ask (not to scare you) but this inability for the charger to turn green was the first symptom I saw when my MacBook Pro battery was in the process of dying. It happened about two weeks before things went south for this battery. As you may have read on this board, there was a run of batteries for these machines that have shown some serious problems. Ultimately what happened with mine was that it would get down to about 34% charge, and then the machine would just turn off. The battery also would often not charge all the way up to the green indicator, either.
I am unsure of what else you can try, other than maybe resetting PRAM. Just be on the watch for increased battery flakiness over the next couple of weeks. Not to worry, Apple will replace the battery for you free of charge.

  • MacBook Pro power adapter doesn't show green light when fully charged

I've had a quick search through the communities and there are a lot of posts about chargers and indicator lights, but I'm not sure I'm really satisfied about my own issue so I thought I'd ask anyway.
Basically, I bought a spare power adapter (genuine Apple 85W MagSafe2) for my new 15" Retina MacBook Pro in a store the other day, to save me lugging my main adapter to and from work all the time.
Using it for the first time made me realise that the adapter I got with my MBP behaves slightly differently re: the LED indicators. The new one from the store shows amber until the MBP is fully charged, then solid green once fully charged. This I believe is perfectly normal.
The charger I got with the MBP shows amber whilst charging, but only shows green very briefly when fully charged and then the indicator goes out completely. OSX (10.8.2) still indicates that it is connected to the power source though, and the battery doesn't drain or anything at this point - it definitely appears to be functioning as expected.
Aside from this, I can determine no real difference between the two adapters in terms of charging speed or general functionality, they both appear fine.
I just wondered if anyone else had ever seen this?
I did reset the MBP's SMC settings too, but it made no difference. I'm inclined to think there isn't an issue with the laptop itself since the new adapter's indicators work exactly as I'd expect, but then again the original adapter seems to function perfectly so I'm wondering if there's just some trivial issue with the green LEDs or something like that.

Really doesn't matter if anyone else has or has not seen something like what you have. Your original adapter is faulty in one way or another and you should take it in to Apple with your rMBP to show them what is happening and Ask Nicely for a new one that works correctly.

  • New Power Adapter Doesn't fit right

The power adapter for my iBook G3 started only working when it really felt like it, so I check the discussion boards about buying a new one. I saw the link about Shentech.com, which indicated their power cord was the same as the one bought from the Apple Store, though it cost about half as much. I bought this one, but when it arrived (it was delivered VERY quickly), I was concerned because I have to force it into the computer. It charges the battery just fine, but I am concerned about ultimately doing damage to the computer. It is a model A 1036. Has anyone else had this issue? Since I didn't buy it directly from Apple, can I still ask Apple about it, as it is an Apple Product?

Hi, Katie. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, I have the exact same issue with the 65-watt adapter I bought from Shentech:
    http://store.shentech.com/apge24v265ws.html
I thought perhaps it was because I bought the 65-watt instead of the 45-watt that originally came with the iBook. I always keep an extra on hand, and that super-tight one has been relegated to "extra" status. I am always VERY careful any time I plug it in.
If you are very worried about it, maybe you should call Shentech and ask for a replacement. They may be refurbishing them. Even though it says "new" on their website, mine is a bit scuffed, and does not LOOK new.
A call to Apple about it may shut Shentech down if they are selling refurbished Apple products as new, but maybe that would be the right thing to do?
I'm afraid this isn't much help, but it does let you know that you're not alone.

Have you attempted a restore again? Sometimes a correct second try could work.
If the icon doesn't go away (after the restore) for over a minute of being connected to the charger, try the resetting your iPod again.
Also, before trying a restore again, fully re-charge your iPod (3 hours should do it), then connect it to your computer to restore.
If you are getting any error messages, or the restore process seems to have had some kind of failure, please list them and when it occurs.

  • Magsafe adapter doesn't always work?

I've developed an interesting problem with my macbook pro. This happens in multiple places, at work, at home, and elsewhere. If the magsafe charger is plugged into a "Power Strip" it may or may not work. It's a 50/50 chance. If its plugged directly into a wall it always works. If I plug it into the power strip with just my printer on it, the one I usually use, I get a 50/50 chance. If I unplug the printer so that it is the only thing on that power strip it still only works 50% of the time.
Same thing at work and at other peoples house. No matter what kind of power strip, it doesn't work 100%. This problem seems to slowly getting worst also and it didn't happen when I first got the laptop.

If you can consitantly make it fail on any powerboard, i'd recommend you show someone at an apple store. If it's faulty then Apple will replace it.

  • Orange LED on power adapter won't turn green after 10.4.7 update?

    Hey guys,
this could be independent of the 10.4.7 update, but I've noticed that after the update, the LED does not turn green. The battery seems to charge fully, but the icon says, (Calculating...) and the LED stays orange. (left it like this for a whole night)
So far I've tried to reset the PMU and repaired permissions with no luck. Currently I'm calibrating the battery but I'm wondering whether anyone has had similar issues and whether anyone has a fix for it. Thanks in advance.

  • I downloaded the lion recovery update and new mac os and now my power adapter doesn't work

Any ideas how to fix this?  I have tried different adapters, different outlets, etc and nothing works.

Your best bet is to call the Vodafone technical support helpline. Since each manufacturer writes custom software for each OS. They might be working on new drivers...

  • Minor Problem with MagSafe Power Adapter

I got my MBP almost a year ago now (partially why I'm asking the question) and I've noticed that my power adapter doesn't always show the charge light. Sometimes it is not on at all, and sometimes it is less bright in color (both green and amber).
If I remove it and put it back it usually corrects itself.
It if fully functional; even if the light is completely out and plugged in it still shows as charging.
So, is this normal? I never remember having this sort of problem with my PB G4.

I would think the led light on my adapter cable was broken, but I discovered it works fine on a co-workers MBP. His adapter, which we know works, does NOT work (ie. the led does not come on) when attached to my computer. This indicate to me that the problem, whatever it is, can sometimes be with the computer and not the adapter.
I would be curious if others with apparently dead leds have tried their chargers on other MBPs.
Here's the long version of my story:
My 5W MagSafe completely fried after only 9 months.
The new adapter was fine for several days until this morning.
My "low battery" warning popped up, so so I plugged it in to recharge and immediately noticed the little led on the charger cord did not come on.
I found it hard to believe that I had another bad adapter, so before making the trip back to the store, I went into the studio where there are some other MBP users.
I plugged my adapter into another laptop and the led came on. It appeared to function completely normally. I tried MagSafe adapters from two other MBPs, but the led did not come on on either of them while attached to my computer.
This made me think there was some sort of problem with the connector on the computer itself. Just visually, it appears to be clean and corrosion free.
The next obvious step, it seemed, would have been to try swapping batteries with the other laptops, but mine is a 17" and everyone else here has 15"... and so we have different battery sizes.
One of the people here at the studio had a little utility called "Coconut Battery", that reports information about the battery health. When I ran it on my laptop, I got what I thought were rather surprising results.
It showed the usual things like current charge (21%), battery capacity and so on. But under "Additional Info" it said "Charger connected: Yes" and "Battery is charging: No".
I figured this narrowed it down to a problem with the battery. But as I was showing these results to my co-worker, the "Current Battery Charge" changed from 21 to 22%. Huh? We left it plugged in and it continued to show a steady climb in the charge, as if it is working normally. Except there is no led light, and the software still says it is not charging. Odd.
I then noticed that the built-in battery level indicator on the status bar was also showing the same increases. The led lights on the back of the battery are indicating an increase as well.
Just out of curiosity, I ran a second battery health analyzer program and again got these conflicting results. This one reported the same battery charge and capacity and so on as the previous one. It also recognized that the laptop was running off of AC power, that there was a battery, but it said "Not Chargeable."
So now I am going to let it continue until I have a full charge and then see if the computer will run as usual from the battery.
I don't think the store here is going to give me another adapter since this one appears to work just fine on the other computers.
Any thoughts on why the led would work on other laptops but not mine?
Why the battery health monitors report that the battery is being charged, but also that it is "not chargeable"?

  • Power Adapter Does Not Charge the Battery and Charge Light Is On?

Power Adapter Does Not Charge the Battery and Charge Light Is On?
My power adapter doesn't charge my computer anymore. however the charge light is on.
Please help my battery is draining fas

So, with your power adaptor connected not only does the battery not charge but the powerbook is not running on ac power. Then I guess the power adaptor is faulty. In as much as you've verified this with a known good one a new one is in order. Try yours in another powerbook to make sure.

  • My mac book air doesn't always charge

my mac book air doesn't always charge. The charger doesn't always light up. Please advise.

unlikely your charger is bad, rather it sounds as if your IO BOARD may be defective, perform a SMC reset and re-verify same.
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
If same contact Apple for full in shop diagnostic and possible parts replacement.

  • Powerbook G4 won't charge battery or run with power adapter plugged in.

My Titanium Powerbook G4 will not charge the battery or run with the power adapter plugged in. When plugged in the power adapter doesn't change to amber showing its charging. Instead it has a green light that flashes off and on. I thought it was a defective power adapter but when its plugged in to another powerbook its seems to be working properly. I reset the PMU but that didn't help. I have been unable to find anything that would tell me what a flashing green means.
    Powerbook Titanium G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, Marshall. With no power being supplied to the Mac for several months, not only has your main battery gone flat (and may never again be able to take a charge), but your internal backup battery has also gone flat. A Tibook with a dead backup battery generally will not start up at all, even with AC power connected.
Try this: remove the main battery and leave the AC power adapter connected overnight in an attempt to recharge the backup battery. If the Powerbook won't start in the morning under AC power, the backup battery is shot, has lost the ability to be charged, and must be replaced.
If the PB starts up in the morning on AC power, set the date and time correctly, shut the computer down, insert the main battery, and allow 48 hours with AC power connected in an attempt to charge the main battery. Then disconnect the AC adapter and try to start up under battery power. If that doesn't work, and no lights or only one flashing light appear when you press the power-indicator button on the battery, you'll have to replace the main battery.

  • Why my power adapter for 15" retina display is so hot?

Can someone explain and help that why the power adapter with extention always runs really really hot after charge for few minutes? is that normal???it's hot like you ecen cannot hold it.

Mine gets warm - never really untouchably hot. Take it back to the Apple Store and have them look at it. They may just need to exchange the adapter itself.

  • Charger doesn't always seem to connect to computer

    Hi,
I am having problems with my charger for my MBP. The green/orange light on the charger cord where it connects to the computer doesn't always light up when it is plugged in. This also means that it isn't charging sometimes. I have to take it in and out a few times or push with slight force on it for the light to turn on and for the computer to charge. I have a case on my computer but this isn't the problem because I have tried plugging the charger in both ways/directions and both ways have this problem. This computer is only a year old so I am worried.
    Thanks!
